Michael McDonald is Maurice Young Chair of Applied Ethics at the University of British Columbia's W. Maurice Young Centre for Applied Ethics. He was the founding Director of the Centre, a position which he held from 1990 to 2002. He received an Honours BA in Philosophy from the University of Toronto and an MA and PhD in Philosophy from the University of Pittsburgh. From 1969 to 1990, he taught in the Philosophy Department at the University of Waterloo.
McDonald was also co-chair of the Tri-Council Working Group which authored the "Code of Conduct for Research Involving Humans" (1997). That code was the precursor document to the eventual Tri-Council Policy Statement: Ethical Conduct for Research Involving Humans.[1]
In 2009, The Canadian Bioethics Society gave McDonald its Lifetime Achievement Award for his "outstanding contribution to the Healthcare Ethics in Canada."[2]
In 2006, the Certified General Accountants Association of Canada presented McDonald with the designation of Honorary Certified General Accountant, in honour of his contribution to professional ethics education through his work for the Association.
