History

edit

Zekurü Media has founded its own broadcast arm, initially known as Buttercup Broadcasting Network or BBN and set up its own TV station at abandoned house at Shrine Hills, Matina, Davao City, which place houses radio and TV stations of various networks, to launch its own TV channel dedicated to animation. On May 5, 2022, the TV station was inaugurated and opened for business for test broadcast, and the TV channel was launched on May 9, taking inspiration from Indonesia's RTV and Australia's ABC Me but with TV commercials, also as a response to ABS-CBN shutdown, Disney Channel Asia shutdown, and the continued rise of streaming television that caused traditional TV to decline.

On June 26, 2023, BBN switched to widescreen and started broadcasting in 720p HDTV. However for digital TV boxes like ABS-CBN TV Plus, it has been downscaled to 480i/480p SDTV, while it also remained letterboxed for analog feed.

On January 15, 2024, BBN was rebranded to BTVBS to avoid confusion with another TV network that uses the abbreviation "BBN".

On May 14, BTVBS sealed partnership with Metro Manila-based media companies BIT Media and Astra Media.

On May 24, BTVBS has moved from channel 33 to 41, a channel used to relay Disney Channel Asia on terrestrial TV until it went dark since 2009 to focus on pay TV. Channel 33 was vacated by BTVBS before being occupied by Hydra Network.

On August 3, 2024, BTVBS has ceased broadcasting in analog as part of PH2 digital television transition.

Controversies and incidents

Broadcast hijacking by Iranian government

edit

On October 10, 2023, in the context of the Israel-Hamas war, BBN was hijacked and replaced with Iranian propaganda animation about Mickey Mouse driving a main battle tank in Gaza, which is a parody of a first scene from Steamboat Willie, followed by a message "Iran supports for Palestinian cause". The broadcast hijacking concluded as BBN returned to normal programming but showing color bars with a text:

October 11, one day after this incident, NTC issued a 7-day broadcast suspension order against BBN on the request of MTRCB because of airing a propaganda 'intended to allegedly destabilize the Government of the Philippines in collusion with the foreign powers, for example: China and the Islamic State'. BBN filed a temporary restraining order against MTRCB and NTC, citing rumors are false, saying:

Also, BBN has filed a lawsuit against Iranian government. However, Iranian embassy in Manila has denied this baseless allegation as blasphemous and hateful, which Iranian embassy faced an alias lawsuit for defending this incident. During the 7-day broadcast suspension, BBN temporarily switched to livestream on Twitch. Suspension completed 7 days, allowing BBN to go back on-air. This triggered mixed reaction from Muslim community in Davao, but BBN viewers (particularly Christians and LGBTQ community) were outraged.

edit

On April 24, 2024, BTVBS' official YouTube channel received 1 of the 3 copyright strikes issued by Toei Company after taking down this station's aircheck video about Kamen Rider Saber. On June 20, another copyright strike issued by Recording Industry Association of Japan (which has a link to Toei), taking down its aircheck video about Choudenshi Bioman. This led to BTVBS making confrontation with Toei, followed by boycott against Japanese company itself, citing flaws about copyright system on YouTube and differences between fair use and Japanese copyright law. In response, BTVBS began to trim Toei-produced content out of its videos and privating Toei-filled videos on YouTube to avoid more than three copyright strikes that would result in its YouTube channel being terminated. Despite this, BTVBS continues to air Toei content.

GMA Network

edit

BTVBS ranted about GMA Network censoring each foreign content (e.g. anime) as an excuse to make more advertising space, cutting off TV openings and closing credits, replacing the each show's original opening theme with different one GMA made while also putting a title card before commercial break and the end of the program. BTVBS suggested that GMA Network should learn from the American, Japanese and South Korean broadcasting standards. No statement was made by GMA.
