TheBedlam bell is the prize of the annual college sports match ups between the University of Oklahoma and Oklahoma State University as well to the winners of the individual games.[2]

History

edit

In 1917 Oklahoma State University and the University of Oklahoma met in Oklahoma City, and the "Aggies" upset the Sooners, 9-0. That night after learning of the win over the Sooners, students from Oklahoma State rang the bell in Old Central to announce the victory over the Sooners to Stillwater forming a relay to pull the bell rope throughout the night. When the fans who attended the game made it back to town, the students and townspeople had started a torch-light parade.[2]

During the Bedlam game of 1932 students from OU stole the clapper, however students still rang the bell using a sledge hammer to announce the victory over the Sooners. Later students from Oklahoma State stole the clapper back, however OU claimed that the clapper was still in the possession of the Sooners with the one that Oklahoma State stole coming from a locale church in Norman.[2]

A compromise was made in 1966 that the bell clapper would become a traveling trophy in the Bedlam Game the tradition of the Bedlam bell clapper was born. The tradition of the Bell Clapper continues to this day but in the form of a crystal bell given to the winning school of the Bedlam series.[2]

Bell clapper

edit

The Bell clapper was the original traveling trophy of Bedlam series awarded to the overall winner, it was replaced in ???? with a crystal bell. Its originates from the bell in Old Central. The clapper was stolen in 1932 by OU students wanting to put a stop to Oklahoma States tradition of ringing the bell after a victory over the Sooners. The clapper became the traveling trophy after a compromise was reached in 1966 between the two schools.[2]

Crystal bell

edit

The Bedlam Crystal bell replaced the Bell clapper in ???? and became the traveling trophy. Each year the trophy is awarded to the school with the most wins in the series as well as to the individual game winning schools.
