The current guidance as expressed in WP:UBCR, is that it is best not to use userboxes to express political views. The logic for this seems to be that they could be polemical and create strife, and that userboxes should instead be about us as editor not us as people. This essay argues that, properly utilised, userboxes can and do help us better express who we are as editors and in an environment where we assume good faith and thus help us remain accountable to each other as we strive to maintain a neutral point of view.
