Team Illumination is the senior-level synchronized skating team of the Dutch synchronized skating club Kids on Ice[1]. Throughout the years, kids on ice has had several teams competing in various categories, including: Pre-juvinale, juvinale, basic novice, advanced novice, junior basic, junior isu and senior isu. The club is based in Eindhoven, The Netherlands. This city is also the host to the Synchronized skating competition: The Lumière Cup.

Team Illumination has competed at the World Synchronized Skating Championships in the seasons: 2016-2017, 2017-2018 and 2018-2019[2]. Their heighest results at a world cup was 18th place in the season 2018-2019. They were also chosen to represent The Netherlands at the 2019-2020 and 2020-2021 world cups, but sadly, because of covid-19, the competitions were canceled.

History

edit

Before their club, Kids on ice, participated in synchro competitions, the club solely focused on shows and local performances. But, in 2012, they decided to switch to Synchronized skating and Team Illumination was birthed. [3] Their coach and choreographer Angelique Visser has been with them since the very start in 2012. She is the coach of all the synchro teams within Kids on Ice.

Their name is derived from "Illuminate" or the French "Illuminer". This is because their hometown Eindhoven, is known as "The city of light", because the company famous for selling light bulbs, Philips, was founded here.

The team has also been very active within One Team Movement (One TeamMVMT), which is an organisation focused on creating opportunities for synchronized skating teams and uniting and empowering the synchronized skating community, as one team. They assist the sport towards its olympic goals and organise development camps, community activities, and virtual mentorship to further unite the skaters[4]. The club has sent an ambassador to represent their country in the Global Ambassador Program[5] in 2021, a program organised by One Team Movement. The program focuses on promoting synchronized skating world wide and bridge the gap between developmental and elite levels within synchronized skating. The team has also assisted in creating the flash mob a few times, which is also an initiative organised by One Team Movement.
