Dr. Joan Peace Babalanda is a Ugandan senior consultant surgeon[1] specializing in surgical oncology. She is known for her research in breast cancer, particularly her work on triple-negative breast cancer among women at Mulago National Referral Hospital. Dr. Babalanda has held several significant roles within the Ugandan health sector,[2] including her current position as Head of Surgery at Ministry of Health, Jinja Regional Referral Hospital.[1]
Babalanda studied both her Ordinary and Advanced Level (UCE & UACE) secondary school from Mt. St. Mary's Namagunga. She is a Ugandan medical professional, a specialist in the surgical oncology space. She holds a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB) and a Master of Medicine (M.Med) in General Surgery from Makerere University. Her work on the prevalence of triple-negative breast cancer has been cited in several academic publications, marking a significant contribution to the field of oncology in Uganda. The 2012 academic research done at Makerere titled "Prevalence and clinico-histopathological characteristics of triple-negative breast cancer among women at Mulago National Referral Hospital",[3] under the supervision of Prof. Galukanda.[4]
Babalanda later pursued further specialization with a Master's degree in Surgical Oncology from Cairo University. Her thesis, titled "Evaluation of Intraoperative Pectoral Nerve Block by Surgeon during Modified Radical Mastectomy[5]," was supervised by Assoc. Prof. Maher Hassan Ibraheem, Dr. Ashraf Mahmoud Aly, and Dr. Tamer Ahmed Mahmoud Kotb.
In addition to her medical qualifications, Babalanda earned a Master of Public Health (MPH) from Makerere University, where she researched surgery waiting time and its associated factors among patients with early-stage breast cancer at Mulago Hospital. This work was supervised by Associate Professor Fredrick Makumbi.[6]
Career
editBabalanda has held several significant roles in the Ugandan health sector. She is currently a Senior Consultant Surgeon at Jinja Regional Referral Hospital, Ministry of Health, Uganda. Since February 2020, she has been a leading figure in surgical oncology in Uganda, particularly known for her work on breast cancer.
Before her current role, she served as a Medical Consultant at the Ministry of Health, Uganda with Hoima RRH having also formerly served at Mulago National Referral Hospital & Butabika; and as a General Surgeon with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP)[7] & Intergovernmental Authority for Development (IGAD)[8] in the sahel region from January 2012 to July 2015. Her extensive experience in both surgical[9] and public health domains[10] has contributed significantly to Uganda's healthcare system, particularly in the field of oncology. She also offers Health Systems Advisory[11] to projects at Inzozi.

editBabalanda's research has primarily focused on oncology, with an emphasis on breast cancer. Her work on the prevalence and clinico-histopathological characteristics of triple-negative breast cancer among women at Mulago National Referral Hospital has been influential in the field. Her subsequent research in Cairo on intraoperative pectoral nerve blocks during mastectomy procedures provided valuable insights into pain management and surgical outcomes. She also continues to teach and supervise Masters Medicine Surgery Students from several universities.
Her public health research on surgery waiting times and associated factors among breast cancer patients has also contributed to improving patient management strategies in Uganda.
