Tempesta di Mare, The Philadelphia Baroque Orchestra and Chamber Orchestra, is a musical group that performs baroque music on baroque instruments.[1] It has a concert series in Philadelphia, tours and records for the British label Chandos.
Biography
editThe group is named for Vivaldi's concerto La Tempesta di Mare, meaning "the storm at sea," a name which reflects baroque composers' belief in the power of music to evoke drama.[1] Tempesta's mission is to increase interest in live classical music as an exciting, shared public experience, with particular focus on presenting rare and important work. Tempesta di Mare is led by music co-directors Gwyn Roberts and Richard Stone with concertmaster Emlyn Ngai.[1] The ensemble performs baroque repertoire ranging from staged opera to chamber music. It performs all orchestral repertoire without a conductor, as was the practice when this music was new. Tempesta di Mare creates a sense of discovery in its performances. The major component of this experience is programming non-canonical music: modern rediscoveries, important works by forgotten composers, overlooked works by famous composers, and even famous works by famous composers revealed in ways that the audience has never before experienced them. Its Philadelphia Concert Series, emphasizes the creation of a sense of discovery for artists and audience alike. Since its launch in 2002, the series has included an impressive record of more than seventy modern world premieres, with important contributions to the J. F. Fasch revival and works by John Blow, Johann Rosenmüller, G. F. Telemann, and repertoire of the Jewish Baroque, among many others. Its supporters include the Pew Charitable Trusts, William Penn Foundation, Presser Foundation, and National Endowment for the Arts.[2]

editThe ensemble’s live-recorded performances have been broadcast nationally on such programs as SymphonyCast, Performance Today, Sunday Baroque, and Harmonia. Concert recordings are distributed worldwide via the European Broadcasting Union, the world’s foremost alliance of public service media organisations, with members in fifty-six countries in Europe and beyond.[3]
Philadelphia Concert Series
editLaunched in 2002, the series has included 31 contemporary "world premieres" and innumerable examples of rare and under-performed repertoire.[4] Currently, the series includes orchestra and chamber performances and artist recitals.[2][5]

Reception
editFanfare magazine praised Tempesta di Mare for its "abundant energy, immaculate ensemble, impeccable intonation, and an undeniable sense of purpose."
The Philadelphia Inquirer noted Tempesta's Philadelphia Concert Series for its "off-the-grid chic factor," describing Tempesta as "an old-music group that acts like a new-music group, by pushing the cutting edge back rather than forward."[1]
A leader in the recent Johann Friedrich Fasch revival, Tempesta has received much praise for premier recordings that capture his riveting "variety of instrumental resources," as commented by Janelle Davis from Harmony Early Music. "Tempesta has always been good, and they have only gotten better as they dig more deeply into the orchestral music of [Fasch]," writes Davis.[7]
