Overview

Jamaica Reggae Industry Association (JaRIA) was established on February 3, 2009, as a non-governmental, non-profit umbrella organization within Jamaica’s entertainment industry to represent and advocate for music industry professionals. The organization seeks to raise standards and encourage growth and collaboration in the industry while promoting and preserving the spirit of Jamaica’s music and entertainment products. At its inception, the main goal was to position Jamaica at the center of an international reggae movement and culture.[1]

JaRIA Initiatives

JaRIA develops and sponsors activities, programs, and initiatives developed to support Jamaica’s musicians and promote reggae music and culture at the global level. Among these initiatives are regular monthly and yearly events.

Reggae Month Celebrations

During the designated Reggae Month of February every year, concerts, workshops, seminars, and other events highlight the rich and diverse nature of Jamaican music.[2] Reggae Wednesdays are held weekly during Reggae Month, and the One Drop of Harmony event in Montego Bay celebrates the best music in the area.

Reggae Hall of Fame was established to honor reggae music’s pioneers and legends. The individuals inducted into the Reggae Hall of Fame are honored for their contribution to the development and popularization of reggae music locally and on the world stage.

Music Education and Workshops are offered to foster the development of aspiring musicians and music industry professionals through training in music production, marketing, and rights management.

Reggae Wednesdays Jamz is held each month throughout the year to provide the public with exposure to top musical talent.

The annual Reggae CyaA Dunn concert introduces the top emerging talent and industry professionals in Ocho Rios, St. Ann Parish.

JaRIA TV YouTube Channel

Reggae Wednesdays can be accessed on the JaRIA TV YouTube channel, along with JaRIA’s Reggae Open University, a seminar/workshop series.

The JaRIA Awards Program

The JaRIA Awards were established to highlight the evolution of Jamaican music and those who contribute to it. The awards are presented at a gala event that recognizes iconic figures in the music industry who have significantly contributed to the impact of Jamaica’s music culture around the world. The gala celebrates their accomplishments in a concert format that provide performances by a variety of musicians together with the award presentations. The original awards program in 2009 presented 11 awards, but over the years, JaRIA has responded to changes in the industry by expanding its award categories. In 2011, two years after its launch, JaRIA added the Lifetime Achievement and Media awards. The Gregory Isaacs Foundation Award, which recognizes leaders in dance, fashion, graphic design, or as selectors, was established in 2019.

The Diamond Jubilee Commemorative Award was created to celebrate Jamaica’s 60th anniversary of independence by recognizing contributions made by individuals to advance Jamaica’s music, language, culture, and philosophy worldwide. Recipients of the award included Jamaica’s national hero, Marcus Mosiah Garvey, Robert Nesta Marley, and Louise Bennet Coverley.

The special Golden Jubilee Commemorative Award was established in 2023 in recognition of Jamaica’s 50th independence anniversary and awarded to the Jamaica Federation of Musicians and Affiliated Artistes (JFM) for its work as an advocate for the rights, protections, and interests of musicians, artistes, and affiliated professionals in the music industry.

In 2024, the JaRIA added the Ibo Cooper Icon Award to honor the musician, educator, and former member of Third World, the JaRIA Corporate Support Award, and the Friend of JaRIA Award. While most of the awards are selected by a JaRIA panel, awards for Album of the Year, Song of the Year, and Breakthrough Artist of the Year are chosen by popular vote.
