Sir Joseph Loftus Wilkinson (1845 – 16 June 1903) was a British railway manager. He was General Manager of the Great Western Railway (GWR) from 1896 to 1903.[1]
Notes
edit1899 - ".. the biggest railway in every respect in the kingdom... we want to make our big undertaking the undertaking of the country."[2]
Apparently declined a knighthood (twice) - need to find reference no - it's Frank Potter.
Need to check Maggs - there is something on the South Wales/Fishguard lines[3]
Lieutenant-Colonel in the Engineer and Railway Volunteer Staff Corps (seems to be a rank that goes with General Manager = Lambert was this rank before retiring - see LG).[4] He was also a member of the Army Railway Council.[1]
Line improvements, dining cars, staff welfare, competition (ICE_Obit)[5]
Inglis and power of General Manager (page 43).[6]
Is GWR 3031 Class 3056 named after this Wilkinson?
GWR
editWilkinson joined the GWR in 1863 as a junior clerk. He remained with the GWR for almost all of his working life, but was Manager of the Buenos Aires and Pacific Railway from 1885 to 1887. He rejoined the GWR as Chief Goods Manager in 1888, and became General Manager in 1896 until his death in 1903. He was knighted in 1902.[7]
Note on Wikidata/Wikipedia checking
edit- The Wikidata bot (WD BOT) regularly monitors wikidata items used in the Wikipedia {{Infobox person/Wikidata}} template. A list of wikidata items could be generated from the What Links Here page, and a list of the interesting properties from the template definition.
- If any of the interesting properties of the item have changed since the time of the previous check, WD BOT generates a report detailing the changes in a log file somewhere on Wikidata.
- The Wikipedia bot (WP BOT) regularly checks the log file on Wikidata.
- If the log file has been updated with changes since the last check, WP BOT writes a report of the changes on the talk page of the appropriate Wikipedia page. The report will also include details of the reference information on Wikidata in a cite template such as {{Cite Book}}.
- Any Wikipedia user who has the page on their watchlist will see that the talk page has been updated (provided they haven't hidden bot edits).
- The Wikipedia user can then check whether the changes to the infobox are appropriate and referenced and if the information is from a reliable source. They can then make any appropriate changes to the article, including suppressing the infobox parameter, adding text to the article to show the new/changed data in the article, adding a citation to the text using an exisitng source, or creating a new reference using the information in the WP BOT report.
