"Danegeld":
A tax which was placed upon people around the time of the Vikings in order to raise money to give to Viking raiders. This was done to prevent a land or region or village being completely ravaged and trashed. Was traditionally known as a "gafol" or "gaol" until the 12th Century, when the term "Danegeld" came into use.
