Cricket Switzerland, renamed from Swiss Cricket Association in 2014, is the premier governing body of the sport of cricket in Switzerland and recognised by Swiss Olympic as the body representing the sport in Switzerland.

About

edit

Cricket Switzerland, with its registered home in the Swiss capital of Berne, is the premier governing body of the sport of cricket in Switzerland, commanding a membership estimated at 1000+ cricketers and their families of all ages and a member of Swiss Olympic representing the sport in Switzerland.

Cricket Switzerland organises a domestic senior 40 over league, a senior Twenty20 competition, junior tournaments and a ladies team. Cricket Switzerland also selects senior & junior international squads and organises cricket coaching & training sessions, coaches & officials courses throughout Switzerland. Cricket Switzerland also has two spin-off associations: the Swiss Federation Of Cricket Umpires & Scorers (sFOCUS) and the Cricket Coaches Association of Switzerland (CCAS), comprising of over 60 coaches & 70 umpires.

Cricketers come from all over Switzerland, mainly from the Geneva, Bern, Basel and Zürich areas. They are typically bilingual, possess a good awareness of multiple cultures, enjoy an above average schooling and subsequently many enjoy an above average income.

Cricket is played on public sports fields and school grounds with an artificial pitch. Thanks to the support of local sports councils, Basel, C.E.R.N., Cossonay, Geneva & Winterthur have permanent NottsSport© surfaces. Cossonay (near Lausanne) is a purpose built cricket ONLY ground.

History

edit

In 1985, at the initiative of the Lyceum Alpinum, Zuoz, the SCA helped to organise the first Zuoz Cricket Festival. The Lyceum has a long tradition of cricket and other "British" sports (e.g. Eton Fives) dating from the 1920s when an English sports master was appointed. Four cricket matches can be played simultaneously on the grounds at Zuoz in an idyllic setting at an altitude of 1,700 metres (5,600 ft). Following a modest start (only four clubs participated in 1985), the festival is now well established with the regular participation of eight clubs.

A Swiss national side played in the inaugural Cricketer International Tournament in Guernsey in 1990, narrowly missing the semi-final by 0.1 runs/over. Tours have been made over the years to various countries by individual clubs and by the Association, and there have been welcome visits by touring teams to Switzerland.

In 1985 the association was granted affiliate status of the ICC. In 2012, Switzerland lost its ICC affiliate status [1] due to the creation of a second organisation (Schweizerischer Cricket Verband) with nine memberclubs claiming to oversee cricket in Switzerland.

On 1 March 2014 the association was rebranded as Cricket Switzerland. The current President of the Cricket Switzerland is Alexander Mackay. Elected in 2011, he became the Association's sixth President, succeeding John McKillop.

Cricket Switzerland Premier League

edit

The senior outdoor summer league runs from April through September. Sixteen teams from across the country, compete in the Cricket Switzerland Premier League, a 40 over cricket league format.

The qualification round consist of two geographically split divisions, playing one 40 over format cricket match against each team (winner=10pts; no result/draw/tie=5pts; loss=0pts; 1 bonus point=Youth/Woman).

If the number of points is equal, positions in the league are decided on Net Run Rate (NRR).

The first four teams from each division progress to a quarter-final stage and the winner is decided by a final 40 over format match to become Cricket Switzerland's 40 over cricket league champions with prize money for the champions and for the runners-up.

The Cricket Switzerland Premier League is run under the auspices of Cricket Switzerland and in accordance with Cricket Switzerland's 40 over competition rules & regulations.
