Initiative 3 was an unsuccessful Idaho ballot initiative concerning nuclear waste that appeared on the ballot for the November 1996 elections. It sought to require legislative and voter approval of agreements for the receipt of additional radioactive waste and nullify any existing prior agreements.
Background
editIn 1995, Governor Phil Batt had made an agreement with the federal government to permit more nuclear waste shipments to Idaho. In exchange, there was to be waste cleanup and promises of waste removal within 40 years.

editAlthough a poll taken shortly before the election showed 52% in favor, and 29% against, the measure failed to pass, with 62.53% voting no.[1]
