A Skookum Cat is a new breed of cat developed in the United States. It is a crossbreed that originated from the Munchkin and the La Perm cats. This cat breed was developed in the 1990s. Similar to a cat, (Felis catus) a skookum is a domestic species of a small carnivorous mammal. It is a breed of one of the many domesticated cats. Domesticated cats are valued for human companionship as well as their ability to kill rodents. This is an “experimental breed” that has not yet been considered its own breed by most registries.

Taxonomic Position

A Skookum Cat is a crossbreed of a Munchkin and LaPerm cat breeds. It furthermore is characterized by short legs and a wavy coat. This type of cat falls under the taxon of Felis domesticus, or domesticate cats, as well as many other breeds of cats.

Discovery and Naming

This cat breed was developed in the 1990s by Roy Galusha, who is an American breeder. The purpose of crossing the Munchkin and the LaPerm breed as to create a feline that would have a curly coat and short legs. Many breeders across the United States, Europe, Australia, and New Zealand have contributed to the production of this new cat breed. This breed is considered an “experimental breed”, meaning it was created experimentally and has not been considered its own breed by most registries.

The word “Skookum” is derived from a jargon in Chinook, which is a language spoken by Native Americans. This word translates to “powerful” or “mighty”.

Distribution and Habitat

Skookum cats, like other domesticated cats, primarily live in areas of human habitation and are constrained to those developing areas. In addition, many feral cat populations live within proximity to human settlements.
