A New World is a novel by Indian author Amit Chaudhuri. It was published by Alfred A. Knopf in 2000 and won the Sahitya Akademi Award in English category in the year 2002.
Plot
editJayojit Chatterjee is an economics professor in America. He gets divorced from his wife and their son Bonny's custody is given to his wife. Bonny and his mother move away to California. After a year when the couple gets divorced, Jayojit visits his family in Kolkata along with his 7-year-old son Vikram "Bonny" for two months long summer vacations. His mother is a housewife and his father is a retired Admiral and they live in a small flat in southern suburbs of Kolkata leaving away the lavish government bungalow after his father's retirement. Jayojit faces a few troubles after landing in India adopting back to his native culture. He finds himself stuck in memories of America and India. His parents have been married for a very long time and have developed a well synchronized lifestyle with each other. On the contrary, Jayojit ponders over his broken marriage of eleven years with Amala when she left him for her gynaecologist. He also deliberates on various lost opportunities and unfulfilled desires that he has.

editIn 2002, Chaudhuri won the Sahitya Akademi Award in English category.[3]
