Hello. I just wanted to say how much I enjoyed your response here. It was a pleasure to read such a well expressed summary. And thank you for introducing me to Jèrriais, a language I am ashamed to say I had never heard of before. JackofOz 08:45, 20 March 2006 (UTC)Reply

  The Adopt-a-User Barnstar
Sir, for offering a hand to an apparently delusional psycho who seems to think that he's Tarzan's kid brother or something, and offering your help to that individual when he requested it, you demonstrated a willingness to put yourself out on a limb to help others. It is my sincerest hope that you never come to regret that act. John Carter (talk) 15:34, 27 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

I regret to say that I haven't actually written much to date, what with the various other things I find popping up, but I intend to, if these distractions ever disappear. One of them right now is the nascent Wikipedia:Accessibility advocates page. It looks like if I'm to be of any use there, I will have to be at least theoretically eligible to adopt others, which means I have to withdraw from the adoptee program. Thank you again for showing a noob some kindness; I only hope that when the situation arises, I will prove up to the task myself. John Carter (talk) 15:34, 27 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

Thanks JK. I won't let these things deter me, as I truly believe in Wikipedia as a valuable resource. I'll just stay away from that article! - Noisejunky (talk) —Preceding undated comment was added at 16:13, 23 September 2008 (UTC).Reply

Information about Nortmannus

Boujou (the way we say here in Rouen and its region, still nowadays ) and thank you for your welcome. A-va-t-y tei ? I am not a teacher at the university, but graduated in History and German at Rouen University. I am a professional tourist guide: guide interprète anglais-allemand / guide conférencier, I am living in Rouen. I notice you're very knowledgeable. I share with you a passion for Old English, all the Germanic languages (I learnt Norwegian a little bit ), the Celtic one (I tried to learn Breton ). I was very surprised to read that in Jerriais people said "speak" as in Cauchois, but not as in Cotentinois...Euj pâle paquant itou, eun ptieu seulment. I am not a specialist of the Norman middle-ages, but I know quite well the architecture of this period. Allez, oco boujou cheux tei. Nortmannus (talk) 00:22, 23 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

Photograph of "Tapinoma sessile" queen

edit

You mentioned in at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Tapinoma_sessile that you may have a photograph of a Tapinoma sessile queen. Would you be so kind as to follow up on this? I have an infestation in my home, but in a stroke of inspiration, I though that if I could capture a queen, I could start a controlled farm for my amusement. In any case, pictures of this species of ant's queen seem to be near impossible to come by, so your photograph may be of great use. 65.185.33.147 (talk) 04:33, 28 April 2012 (UTC)Reply

Adopt-a-user

edit

Hi, Jade Knight, just to let you know, adopt-a-user is only semi-active and somewhat obsolete these days, so your best bet would be to just look over Category:Wikipedians seeking to be adopted in Adopt-a-user and directly reach out to whoever you think could benefit from your help. Alternatively, you could sign up to become a Teahouse host. The Teahouse is a more recent initiative, and it has supplanted AAU as the primary program to assist new users. Thank you for your offer to help new users! Swarm 22:50, 9 February 2018 (UTC)Reply

Hi, Jade Knight. I should have replied to you earlier, but I'm without email watchlist notifications at present, so missed your post. I'm glad Swarm replied immediately with some helpful suggestions. If you think you'd still like to support/adopt users, I personally believe there remains a use for the Adopt-A-User scheme, and it needs people like you. However, I don't think the deployment of templates for potential adopters and adoptees is very effective at present. With fora like the Teahouse, Helpdesk, IRC Channel plus the {{helpme}} template, I doubt there's nowadays as much need to give support to new editors via the adopt-a-user scheme as there once was. I'd really welcome your views on the following idea: I'm envisaging WP:AAU being modified so that it's more there for the more committed new editors who want to stick around and learn to edit better, supported by experienced editors with shared interests. So, for example, I've just taken on a 70+ yr old glaciologist who wants to share knowledge about the Antarctic, and his interests and mine coincide, and I'm keen to assist him. Whilst I could work through all the policies and guidelines in a structured manner, I think giving him a single point of contact, a watchful eye, and some mutual support ought perhaps to be more what the AAU scheme could nowadays best deliver. If we tweaked the way the project presents itself, and require newer editors to be more proactive in seeking out a like-minded adopter, I think the scheme could be revived with a new energy and purpose to support committed, enthusiastic new editors who are more likely to stay the course. Obviously, you've had past experience of being an adopter, so I would really be interested to know what you think to this proposal?
If you would like to continue to offer to adopt someone, it would be great if you would add some profile information about yourself to the the list of currently available Adopters. I would see this as the place new editors would eventually be sent to take the initiative and approach an experienced editor for support, rather than relying on the two templates to flag people to one another. Invitation to WikiProject Portals

edit

The Portals WikiProject has been rebooted.

There are sections on the WikiProject page dedicated to tasks (including WikiGnome tasks too), and areas on the talk page for discussing the improvement and automation of the various features of portals.

There's a watchlist, of all the pages in the portal namespace, for viewing Related changes.

And more.

You are invited to join, and participate in the effort to revitalize and improve the Portal system and all the portals in it.

We may even surprise ourselves and exceed all expectations. Who knows what we will be able to accomplish in what may become the biggest Wikicollaboration in years.

See ya at the WikiProject!

Sincerely,    — The Transhumanist   14:48, 24 April 2018 (UTC)Reply

Thank you very much

edit

The RfC discussion to eliminate portals was closed May 12, with the statement "There exists a strong consensus against deleting or even deprecating portals at this time." This was made possible because you and others came to the rescue. Thank you for speaking up.

By the way, the current issue of the Signpost features an article with interviews about the RfC and the Portals WikiProject.

I'd also like to let you know that the Portals WikiProject is working hard to make sure your support of portals was not in vain. Toward that end, we have been working diligently to innovate portals, while building, updating, upgrading, and maintaining them. The project has grown to 80 members so far, and has become a beehive of activity.

Our two main goals at this time are to automate portals (in terms of refreshing, rotating, and selecting content), and to develop a one-page model in order to make obsolete and eliminate most of the 150,000 subpages from the portal namespace by migrating their functions to the portal base pages, using technologies such as selective transclusion. Please feel free to join in on any of the many threads of development at the WikiProject's talk page, or just stop by to see how we are doing. If you have any questions about portals or portal development, that is the best place to ask them.

If you would like to keep abreast of developments on portals, keep in mind that the project's members receive updates on their talk pages. The updates are also posted here, for your convenience.

Again, we can't thank you enough for your support of portals, and we hope to make you proud of your decision. Sincerely,    — The Transhumanist   23:09, 25 May 2018 (UTC)Reply

P.S.: if you reply to this message, please {{ping}} me. Thank you. -TT
