Guideline and policy news
- Following consensus at the 2021 RfA review, the autopatrolled user right has been removed from the administrators user group; admins can grant themselves the autopatrolled permission if they wish to remain autopatrolled.
- Additionally, consensus for proposal 6C of the 2021 RfA review has led to the creation of an administrative action review process. The purpose of this process will be to review individual administrator actions and individual actions taken by users holding advanced permissions.
Arbitration
- Following the 2021 Arbitration Committee elections, the following editors have been appointed to the Arbitration Committee: Beeblebrox, Cabayi, Donald Albury, Enterprisey, Izno, Opabinia regalis, Worm That Turned, Wugapodes.
Miscellaneous
- The functionaries email list (functionaries-en
lists.wikimedia.org) will no longer accept incoming emails apart from those sent by list members and WMF staff. Private concerns, apart from those requiring oversight, should be directly sent to the Arbitration Committee.
photos of PBA players

- @Gayviewmahat: To put this in an easier way, images to be used for biographical articles should be free (not copyrighted). Images from news sites are copyrighted, so are images from social media sites (FB, IG, etc.) However, it is not necessary that the images are free. Some images have rights on them that allow for wikipedia use (they are not free because they have rights!) You could find this photos usually at [flickr.com Flickr]. Unfortunately, there aren't any active flickr users that upload these eligible images. One was the official Flickr of Air21 Express (the first Air21 that eventually became Barako Bull) that uploads images that can be used in wiki. Obviously, the account has stopped uploading since the team is now defunct.
- Those that I added recently (at Raymond Almazan, Bong Quinto, etc.) were, at first thought, free because the uploader was the Philippine News Agency and supposedly, works by government officials and organizations (like PNA) shouldn't be copyrighted. However, it turns out it is needed for a written consent from PNA to use these images, so those images that I added will eventually be removed.
- Unfortunately, there aren't anymore images that we can use for the Filipino basketball players' infoboxes. I have checked everything at Flickr but there aren't any more of these kind of images. The best source for now is for user-uploaded images (see Chris Banchero). We can use these images, assuming that the wiki user who uploaded the file gave us rights to use it at wiki. You could also add your own photos of the players, say you could watch a game live and take pictures of them. Engr. Smitty Werben 13:06, 6 January 2022 (UTC)

Recent changes
A oauth_consumervariable has been added to the AbuseFilter to enable identifying changes made by specific tools. [1]- Gadgets are now able to directly include JSON pages. This means some gadgets can now be configured by administrators without needing the interface administrator permission, such as with the Geonotice gadget. [2]
- Gadgets can now specify page actions on which they are available. For example,
|actions=edit,historywill load a gadget only while editing and on history pages. [3] - Gadgets can now be loaded on demand with the
withgadgetURL parameter. This can be used to replace an earlier snippet that typically looks likewithJSorwithCSS. [4] - At wikis where the Mentorship system is configured, you can now use the Action API to get a list of a mentor's mentees. [5]
- The heading on the main page can now be configured using MediaWiki:Mainpage-title-loggedin for logged-in users and MediaWiki:Mainpage-title for logged-out users. Any CSS that was previously used to hide the heading should be removed. [6] [7]
- Four special pages (and their API counterparts) now have a maximum database query execution time of 30 seconds. These special pages are: RecentChanges, Watchlist, Contributions, and Log. This change will help with site performance and stability. You can read more details about this change including some possible solutions if this affects your workflows. [8]
- The sticky header has been deployed for 50% of logged-in users on more than 10 wikis. This is part of the Desktop Improvements. See how to take part in the project.

Recent changes
- When using WikiEditor (also known as the 2010 wikitext editor), people will now see a warning if they link to disambiguation pages. If you click "Review link" in the warning, it will ask you to correct the link to a more specific term. You can read more information about this completed 2021 Community Wishlist item.
- You can automatically subscribe to all of the talk page discussions that you start or comment in using DiscussionTools. You will receive notifications when another editor replies. This is available at most wikis. Go to your Preferences and turn on "Automatically subscribe to topics". [9]
- When asked to create a new page or talk page section, input fields can be "preloaded" with some text. This feature is now limited to wikitext pages. This is so users can't be tricked into making malicious edits. There is a discussion about if this feature should be re-enabled for some content types.

- The Universal Code of Conduct enforcement guidelines have been published for consideration. Voting to ratify this guideline is planned to take place 7 March to 21 March. Comments can be made on the talk page.
Technical news
- The user group
oversightwill be renamedsuppressin around 3 weeks. This will not affect the name shown to users and is simply a change in the technical name of the user group. The change is being made for technical reasons. You can comment in Phabricator if you have objections. - The Reply Tool feature, which is a part of Discussion Tools, will be opt-out for everyone logged in or logged out starting 7 February 2022. Editors wishing to comment on this can do so in the relevant Village Pump discussion.

- Community input is requested on several motions aimed at addressing discretionary sanctions that are no longer needed or overly broad.
- The Arbitration Committee has published a generalised comment regarding successful appeals of sanctions that it can review (such as checkuser blocks).
- A motion related to the Antisemitism in Poland case was passed following a declined case request.
Miscellaneous
- Voting in the 2022 Steward elections will begin on 07 February 2022, 14:00 (UTC) and end on 26 February 2022, 13:59 (UTC). The confirmation process of current stewards is being held in parallel. You can automatically check your eligibility to vote.
- Voting in the 2022 Community Wishlist Survey is open until 11 February 2022.

- English Wikipedia recently set up a gadget for dark mode. You can enable it there, or request help from an interface administrator to set it up on your wiki (instructions and screenshot).
- Category counts are sometimes wrong. They will now be completely recounted at the beginning of every month. [12]
Problems
- A code-change last week to fix a bug with Live Preview may have caused problems with some local gadgets and user-scripts. Any code with skin-specific behaviour for
vectorshould be updated to also check forvector-2022. A code-snippet, global search, and example are available.

Hello! I wanted to drop a quick note for all of our AFC participants; nothing huge and fancy like a newsletter, but a few points of interest.
- AFCH will now show live previews of the comment to be left on a decline.
- The template {{db-afc-move}} has been created - this template is similar to {{db-move}} when there is a redirect in the way of an acceptance, but specifically tells the patrolling admin to let you (the draft reviewer) take care of the actual move.
Short and sweet, but there's always more to discuss at WT:AFC. Stop on by, maybe review a draft on the way? Whether you're one of our top reviewers, or haven't reviewed in a while, I want to thank you for helping out in the past and in the future. Recent changes
- Special:Nuke will now provide the standard deletion reasons (editable at MediaWiki:Deletereason-dropdown) to use when mass-deleting pages. This was a request in the 2022 Community Wishlist Survey. [15]
- At Wikipedias, all new accounts now get the Growth features by default when creating an account. Communities are encouraged to update their help resources. Previously, only 80% of new accounts would get the Growth features. A few Wikipedias remain unaffected by this change. [16]
- You can now prevent specific images that are used in a page from appearing in other locations, such as within PagePreviews or Search results. This is done with the markup
class=notpageimage. For example,[[File:Example.png|class=notpageimage]]. [17] - There has been a change to the HTML of Special:Contributions, Special:MergeHistory, and History pages, to support the grouping of changes by date in the mobile skin. While unlikely, this may affect gadgets and user scripts. A list of all the HTML changes is on Phabricator.

Future changes
- The software to play videos and audio files on pages will change soon on all wikis. The old player will be removed. Some audio players will become wider after this change. The new player has been a beta feature for over four years. [18][19]
- Toolforge's underlying operating system is being updated. If you maintain any tools there, there are two options for migrating your tools into the new system. There are details, deadlines, and instructions on Wikitech. [20]
- Administrators will soon have the option to delete/undelete the associated "talk" page when they are deleting a given page. An API endpoint with this option will also be available. This was a request from the 2021 Wishlist Survey.

Recent changes
- When searching for edits by change tags, e.g. in page history or user contributions, there is now a dropdown list of possible tags. This was a request in the 2022 Community Wishlist Survey. [21]
- Mentors using the Growth Mentor dashboard will now see newcomers assigned to them who have made at least one edit, up to 200 edits. Previously, all newcomers assigned to the mentor were visible on the dashboard, even ones without any edit or ones who made hundred of edits. Mentors can still change these values using the filters on their dashboard. Also, the last choice of filters will now be saved. [22][23]
- The user group
oversightwas renamedsuppress. This is for technical reasons. You may need to update any local references to the old name, e.g. gadgets, links to Special:Listusers, or uses of NUMBERINGROUP.
Problems
- The recent change to the HTML of tracking changes pages caused some problems for screenreaders. This is being fixed. [24]

- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 1 March. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 2 March. It will be on all wikis from 3 March (calendar).
Future changes
- Working with templates will become easier. Several improvements are planned for March 9 on most wikis and on March 16 on English Wikipedia. The improvements include: Bracket matching, syntax highlighting colors, finding and inserting templates, and related visual editor features.
- If you are a template developer or an interface administrator, and you are intentionally overriding or using the default CSS styles of user feedback boxes (the classes:
successbox, messagebox, errorbox, warningbox), please note that these classes and associated CSS will soon be removed from MediaWiki core. This is to prevent problems when the same class-names are also used on a wiki. Please let us know by commenting at phab:T300314 if you think you might be affected.

- The deployment of the reply tool as an opt-out feature, as announced in last month's newsletter, has been delayed to 7 March. Feedback and comments are being welcomed at Wikipedia talk:Talk pages project. (T296645)
- Special:Nuke will now allow the selection of standard deletion reasons to be used when mass-deleting pages. This was a Community Wishlist Survey request from 2022. (T25020)
- The ability to undelete the talk page when undeleting a page using Special:Undelete or the API will be added soon. This change was requested in the 2021 Community Wishlist Survey. (T295389)
Arbitration
- Several unused discretionary sanctions and article probation remedies have been rescinded. This follows the community feedback from the 2021 Discretionary Sanctions review.
Miscellaneous
- The 2022 appointees for the Ombuds commission are Érico, Faendalimas, Galahad, Infinite0694, Mykola7, Olugold, Udehb and Zabe as regular members and Ameisenigel and JJMC89 as advisory members.
- Following the 2022 Steward Elections, the following editors have been appointed as stewards: AntiCompositeNumber, BRPever, Hasley, TheresNoTime, and Vermont.
- The 2022 Community Wishlist Survey results have been published alongside the ranking of prioritized proposals.

Recent changes
- In the Wikipedia Android app it is now possible to change the toolbar at the bottom so the tools you use more often are easier to click on. The app now also has a focused reading mode. [26][27]
Problems
- There was a problem with the collection of some page-view data from June 2021 to January 2022 on all wikis. This means the statistics are incomplete. To help calculate which projects and regions were most affected, relevant datasets are being retained for 30 extra days. You can read more on Meta-wiki.
- There was a problem with the databases on March 10. All wikis were unreachable for logged-in users for 12 minutes. Logged-out users could read pages but could not edit or access uncached content then. [28]

New code release schedule for this week

Moto3 rider notabilty
I interacted with you regarding the establishment of articles for deceased riders, where there was no press coverage prior to death - see Talk:Jason Dupasquier#Notability. This was one in a continuation sequence of death-articles, where there was no prior press coverage (examples - Paul Dobbs, Billy Redmayne).
I have noticed a number of Moto3 articles being established without adequate references, and including some rejected/draftified, which led me to re-examine your argument that only participation in a series of national interest was needed - your quote: "Competed in a series or race of worldwide or national interest
. I think it is agreed that Moto3 is of worldwide interest, thus there is no need for the notability tag.".
The inference from your argument is that ALL participants could have an article as of right. This is no longer the case, as the wording has been removed. There is some reference to Moto2 and GP2, but no mention of Moto3; considering that many of these 250cc series-racing competitors are school-age from CIV and CEV, I think it is wise not to include them. I realise the age criteria will change from 2023 due to the deaths of young participants.
I haven't looked closely at the other changes in notability requirements due to time constraints, but thought I should better address it now on-Wiki, rather than make a note up at a cloud, as I usually do. Thank you.--Rocknrollmancer (talk) 02:31, 24 March 2022 (UTC)

This site shows five automated high-level metrics where you can see the overall health and performance of our wikis' technical environment. - Message boxes produced by MediaWiki code will no longer have these CSS classes:
successbox,errorbox,warningbox. The styles for those classes andmessageboxwill be removed from MediaWiki core. This only affects wikis that use these classes in wikitext, or change their appearance within site-wide CSS. Please review any local usage and definitions for these classes you may have. This was previously announced in the 28 February issue of Tech News.

Is it important on Wikipedia or are there guidelines on Wikipedia to include a person’s political endorsement for a politician, on its own Wikipedia page, such as recent edits to Vice Ganda. Is it right to add to Vice Ganda's article, or to other BLP articles, their political endorsement, it’s not right isn’t it? —Princess Faye (my talk) 10:13, 25 April 2022 (UTC)
- @Princess Faye: There are no guidelines that say not to include political endorsements by a person of interest. In fact, I see numerours people's articles having information about which presidential candidate they are endorsing or supporting. As long as the information is verifiable by sources, there is no reason to not include this information on their articles.

Re: Actual status of riders who did not restart
Hi, yours is a difficult question and has always been a dilemma for me too; the main problem is that the scenario has been treated inconsistently in the official statistics themselves and Wikipedia editors had to change approach from time to time. Currently, it seems that MotoGP profiles is counting all the races where the rider was listed within the race report, even some where the rider never started and there were no red flags. The odd thing is that such races are not counted in the pdf stats: Tatay is given 35 starts (printed before today's race), while in his profile he is given 38 starts (37 plus today's race). The difference is due to a red flag non-restart at the 2019 Valencian Community motorcycle Grand Prix and a 'plain' non-start at the 2021 Styrian motorcycle Grand Prix. Should we follow the pdfs or the profiles?
Another scenario which sometimes has led to inconsistencies is that, when the first part of the race was null and void, non-restarters were treated as if they had never started and as if the first part never existed; when the first part had a proper result, non-restarters were considered as retired. –Gpmat (talk) 16:58, 24 April 2022 (UTC)
- Gpmat I think what you said in the second paragraph is just consistent with what is actually written in the regulations (which I actually had to read to get some clear answers lol).
The first part of the race was null and void...
this is when the first race only lasted less than three laps. What is said in the regulations isthe race will be null and void and a completely new race will be run.
Thus, I think this is when we should list those who did not restart as "DNS" since the first race is considered to have not happened at all. A hint for this scenario is when there is only one pdf for the race (example GPs are the 2019 SPA Moto2 GP and the aforementioned 2019 VAL Moto3 GP).When the first part had a proper result, non-restarters were considered as retired.
this is when the first race lasted more than three laps but less than the required number of laps that would provide full Championship points. What is said in the regulations isthe race will be restarted
: with that wording, we could say that the first race is considered to have taken place (not null and void), and thus, those who would not restart the second race should be considered as "Ret". A hint for this scenario is when there is are two pdfs for the race (example is the recently finished 2022 POR Moto2 GP where there are pdfs each for race part 1 and part 2).- Considering everything, I say that we should follow the pdfs since they seem to be consistent with the regulations (I also think that pdf stats are actually counted). My theory for the inconsistency is that stats in the profiles are not actually counted by hand but is only based from the results from a code's calculation within a specific rider's webpage. - Jerez done, see File:Circuito de Jerez v2.svg. I use Inkscape. As for the red flag question, I agree with you. It seems they use different algorithms to calculate starts, hence different stats. Alaska & Converge
Alaska Aces & Converge FiberXers are different franchises because Converge buys only the Alaska franchise in the PBA, not the whole company itself as well as it's products. Also Alaska Milk Corporation is in milk industry while Converge ICT is on Communications services. It really doesn't make sense why there are the same. Also you compare it to Kevin Durant when he's in the Sonics-Thunder. The difference is the Seattle Supersonics and the Oklahoma City Thunder are the same franchise, Seattle only relocated to Oklahoma City. Also I want to give you some examples. The Welcoat/Rain or Shine franchise buys the Shell franchise in 2006, The GlobalPort/NorthPort buys the Coca-Cola/Powerade franchise in 2012. The Welcoat/Rain or Shine and Shell franchises are different companies, as well as the GlobalPort/NorthPort and Coca-Cola/Powerade. - Gayviewmahat You do realize that the reason the Sonics moved to OKC is because the team was bought by a new owner (who was from OKC)? So with your reasoning, we can say that the Sonics and Thunder are different franchises. Even if they are different owners, the info showing Sonics then Thunder is still shown in one line (see Kevin Durant). If we show Alaska and Converge in two lines, readers who are unaware of Converge buying Alaska would get the interpretation that, for example, Jeron Teng, moved from Alaska to Converge because he was traded or signed with Converge through free agency, which I think would be the normal first interpretation. That is why we show these two teams in one line but two hyperlinks. If you want to discuss more about this, make a discussion at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Basketball. Problems
- Last week, there was a problem with Wikidata's search autocomplete. This has now been fixed. [56]
- Last week, all wikis had slow access or no access for 20 minutes, for logged-in users and non-cached pages. This was caused by a problem with a database change. [57]
Changes later this week
- There is no new MediaWiki version this week. [58]
- Incompatibility issues with Kartographer and the FlaggedRevs extension will be fixed: Deployment is planned for May 10 on all wikis. Kartographer will then be enabled on the five wikis which have not yet enabled the extension on May 24.
- The Vector (2022) skin will be set as the default on several more wikis, including Arabic and Catalan Wikipedias. Logged-in users will be able to switch back to the old Vector (2010). See the latest update about Vector (2022).

- The next open meeting with the Web team about Vector (2022) will take place on 17 May. The following meetings are currently planned for: 7 June, 21 June, 5 July, 19 July.

Guideline and policy news
- Following an RfC, a change has been made to the administrators inactivity policy. Under the new policy, if an administrator has not made at least 100 edits over a period of 5 years they may be desysopped for inactivity.
- Following a discussion on the bureaucrat's noticeboard, a change has been made to the bureaucrats inactivity policy.
Technical news
- The ability to undelete the associated talk page when undeleting a page has been added. This was the 11th wish of the 2021 Community Wishlist Survey.
- A public status system for WMF wikis has been created. It is located at https://www.wikimediastatus.net/ and is hosted separately to WMF wikis so in the case of an outage it will remain viewable.
Arbitration
- Remedy 2 of the St Christopher case has been rescinded following a motion. The remedy previously authorised administrators to place a ban on single-purpose accounts who were disruptively editing on the article St Christopher Iba Mar Diop College of Medicine or related pages from those pages.

Changes later this week
- Some wikis can soon use the add a link feature. This will start on Wednesday. The wikis are Catalan Wikipedia, Hebrew Wikipedia, Hindi Wikipedia, Korean Wikipedia, Norwegian Bokmål Wikipedia, Portuguese Wikipedia, Simple English Wikipedia, Swedish Wikipedia, Ukrainian Wikipedia. This is part of the progressive deployment of this tool to more Wikipedias. The communities can configure how this feature works locally. [59]
- The Wikimedia Hackathon 2022 will take place online on May 20–22. It will be in English. There are also local hackathon meetups in Germany, Ghana, Greece, India, Nigeria and the United States. Technically interested Wikimedians can work on software projects and learn new skills. You can also host a session or post a project you want to work on.
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 17 May. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 18 May. It will be on all wikis from 19 May (calendar).
Future changes
- You can soon edit translatable pages in the visual editor. Translatable pages exist on for examples Meta and Commons. [60]

New Page Patrol newsletter May 2022
Hello Dieter Lloyd Wexler,
At the time of the last newsletter (No.26, September 2021), the backlog was 'only' just over 6,000 articles. In the past six months, the backlog has reached nearly 16,000, a staggering level not seen in several years. A very small number of users had been doing the vast majority of the reviews. Due to "burn-out", we have recently lost most of this effort. Furthermore, several reviewers have been stripped of the user right for abuse of privilege and the articles they patrolled were put back in the queue.
Several discussions on the state of the process have taken place on the talk page, but there has been no action to make any changes. The project also lacks coordination since the "position" is vacant.
In the last 30 days, only 100 reviewers have made more than 8 patrols and only 50 have averaged one review a day. There are currently 804 New Page Reviewers, but about a third have not had any activity in the past month. All 852 administrators have this permission, but only about a dozen significantly contribute to NPP.
This means we have an active pool of about 450 to address the backlog. We cannot rely on a few to do most of the work as that inevitably leads to burnout. A fairly experienced reviewer can usually do a review in a few minutes. If every active reviewer would patrol just one article per day, the backlog would very quickly disappear.
If you have noticed a user with a good understanding of Wikipedia notability and deletion, do suggest they help the effort by placing {{subst:NPR invite}}
on their talk page.
If you are no longer very active on Wikipedia or you no longer wish to be part of the New Page Reviewer user group, please consider asking any admin to remove you from the list. This will enable NPP to have a better overview of its performance and what improvements need to be made to the process and its software.

Recent changes
- Administrators using the mobile web interface can now access Special:Block directly from user pages. [61]
- The www.wiktionary.org portal page now uses an automated update system. Other project portals will be updated over the next few months. [62]
Problems
- The Growth team maintains a mentorship program for newcomers. Previously, newcomers weren't able to opt out from the program. Starting May 19, 2022, newcomers are able to fully opt out from Growth mentorship, in case they do not wish to have any mentor at all. [63]
- Some editors cannot access the content translation tool if they load it by clicking from the contributions menu. This problem is being worked on. It should still work properly if accessed directly via Special:ContentTranslation. [64]

Recent changes
- In the AbuseFilter extension, an
ip_in_ranges()function has been introduced to check if an IP is in any of the ranges. Wikis are advised to combine multipleip_in_range()expressions joined by|into a single expression for better performance. You can use the search function on Special:AbuseFilter to locate its usage. [66] - The IP Info feature which helps abuse fighters access information about IPs, has been deployed to all wikis as a beta feature. This comes after weeks of beta testing on test.wikipedia.org.

- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 31 May. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 1 June. It will be on all wikis from 2 June (calendar).
- Some wikis will be in read-only for a few minutes because of a switch of their main database. It will be performed on 31 May at 07:00 UTC (targeted wikis).
- The New Topic Tool will be deployed for all editors at most wikis soon. You will be able to opt out from within the tool and in Preferences. [67][68]
- The list=usercontribs API will support fetching contributions from an IP range soon. API users can set the
uciprangeparameter to get contributions from any IP range within the limit. [69] - A new parser function will be introduced:
{{=}}. It will replace existing templates named "=". It will insert an equal sign. This can be used to escape the equal sign in the parameter values of templates. [70]

The New topic tool helps editors create new ==Sections== on discussion pages. New editors are more successful with this new tool. You can read the report. Soon, the Editing team will offer this to all editors at most WMF-hosted wikis. You can join the discussion about this tool for the English Wikipedia is at Wikipedia:Village pump (proposals)#Enabling the New Topic Tool by default. You will be able to turn it off in the tool or at Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-editing-discussion.
The Editing team plans to change the appearance of talk pages. These are separate from the changes made by the mw:Desktop improvements project and will appear in both Vector 2010 and Vector 2022. The goal is to add some information and make discussions look visibly different from encyclopedia articles. You can see some ideas at Wikipedia talk:Talk pages project#Prototype Ready for Feedback.

- Several areas of improvement collated from community member votes have been identified in the Universal Code of Conduct Enforcement guidelines. The areas of improvement have been sent back for review and you are invited to provide input on these areas.
Technical news
- Administrators using the mobile web interface can now access Special:Block directly from user pages. (T307341)
- The IP Info feature has been deployed to all wikis as a Beta Feature. Any autoconfirmed user may enable the feature using the "IP info" checkbox under Preferences → Beta features. Autoconfirmed users will be able to access basic information about an IP address that includes the country and connection method. Those with advanced privileges (admin, bureaucrat, checkuser) will have access to extra information that includes the Internet Service Provider and more specific location.
Arbitration
- Remedy 2 of the Rachel Marsden case has been rescinded following a motion. The remedy previously authorised administrators to delete or reduce to a stub, together with their talk pages, articles related to Rachel Marsden when they violate Wikipedia's biographies of living persons policy.
- An arbitration case regarding WikiProject Tropical Cyclones has been closed.

- Users of non-responsive skins (e.g. MonoBook or Vector) on mobile devices may notice a slight change in the default zoom level. This is intended to optimize zooming and ensure all interface elements are present on the page (for example the table of contents on Vector 2022). In the unlikely event this causes any problems with how you use the site, we'd love to understand better, please ping Jon (WMF) to any on-wiki conversations. [80]
Future changes
- The Beta Feature for DiscussionTools will be updated throughout July. Discussions will look different. You can see some of the proposed changes.
- Parsoid's HTML output will soon stop annotating file links with different
typeofattribute values, and instead usemw:Filefor all types. Tool authors should adjust any code that expects:mw:Image,mw:Audio, ormw:Video. [81]

New Page Patrol newsletter June 2022
Hello Dieter Lloyd Wexler,
- Backlog status
At the time of the last newsletter (No.27, May 2022), the backlog was approaching 16,000, having shot up rapidly from 6,000 over the prior two months. The attention the newsletter brought to the backlog sparked a flurry of activity. There was new discussion on process improvements, efforts to invite new editors to participate in NPP increased and more editors requested the NPP user right so they could help, and most importantly, the number of reviews picked up and the backlog decreased, dipping below 14,000[a] at the end of May.
Since then, the news has not been so good. The backlog is basically flat, hovering around 14,200. I wish I could report the number of reviews done and the number of new articles added to the queue. But the available statistics we have are woefully inadequate. The only real number we have is the net queue size.[b]
In the last 30 days, the top 100 reviewers have all made more than 16 patrols (up from 8 last month), and about 70 have averaged one review a day (up from 50 last month).
While there are more people doing more reviews, many of the ~730 with the NPP right are doing little. Most of the reviews are being done by the top 50 or 100 reviewers. They need your help. We appreciate every review done, but please aim to do one a day (on average, or 30 a month).
- Backlog drive
A backlog reduction drive, coordinated by buidhe and Zippybonzo, will be held from July 1 to July 31. Sign up here.

- TIP – New school articles
Many new articles on schools are being created by new users in developing and/or non-English-speaking countries. The authors are probably not even aware of Wikipedia's projects and policy pages. WP:WPSCH/AG has some excellent advice and resources specifically written for these users. Reviewers could consider providing such first-time article creators with a link to it while also mentioning that not all schools pass the GNG and that elementary schools are almost certainly not notable.

There is a new template available, {{NPP backlog}}, to show the current backlog. You can place it on your user or talk page as a reminder:

There has been significant discussion at WP:VPP recently on NPP-related matters (Draftification, Deletion, Notability, Verifiability, Burden). Proposals that would somewhat ease the burden on NPP aren't gaining much traction, although there are suggestions that the role of NPP be fundamentally changed to focus only on major CSD-type issues.

- Consider staying informed on project issues by putting the project discussion page on your watchlist.
