Eastern Front porject

edit

Hi Esdrasbarnevelt. I am undertaking a larger project of filling out the Eastern Front article. In the large part this involves most of the Soviet Operations, and will include the 72 strategic Operations and about 190 smaller operational Operations (either as part of the larger strategic Operations, or in their own right). I would be greatfull for cooperating with you on any of the operations since there is no particular order in which they can be prepared.
Currently I am trying to reconcile the existing articles (written mostly from Western/German perspective) and the Soviet Operations so the articles are not duplicated. I am also trying to fill out the German/Axis Operations which are incomplete in Wiki. The thinking is that for every German offensive there was a Soviet defensive, and visa versa, but the names do not match. Others are working on the Soviet Armies and divisions (and Corps?), so eventually the Operation articles will have unit links.
So what did you have in mind for the Bagration Offensive?
In Soviet sources it is known as the Belorussian Offensive or Belorussian Strategic Offensive operation. It is composed of several operational Offensives: Витебско-Оршанская наступательная

What I wanted to do is to have a 'mother' article for the planning and objectives of the Belorussian Offensive, then links to the separate articles on the above 'daughter' Offensives, and then a summary of the outcomes of the Belorussian Offensive as a whole on the 'mother' article.

Unit titles

edit

In case you may not have realised, the standard form of unit titles is now Xth division (Country name), and not Country name Xth division.--mrg3105 (comms) If you're not taking any flak, you're not over the target. 11:43, 18 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

Thanks - yes, I'm now updating these when I get the chance.Esdrasbarnevelt (talk) 12:17, 18 February 2008 (UTC)Reply
In that case I feel like awarding your something because I was dreading the need to do it myself. I really appreciate it. Thank you--mrg3105 (comms) If you're not taking any flak, you're not over the target. 13:30, 18 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

Operation Solstice

edit
On 4 March, 2008, Did you know? was updated with a fact from the article Operation Solstice, which you created or substantially expanded. If you know of another interesting fact from a recently created article, then please suggest it on the Did you know? talk page.

maps

edit

Have a look here http://maps.poehali.org/en/catalogue/ I will propose we use these with edited graphics as required. The advantage is that they are available in different scales, and once modified become non-copyright original works of the editor (I think).--mrg3105 (comms) ♠14:11, 7 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

Will you look for the NATO symbols and other graphics (lines, arrows, etc.)? --mrg3105 (comms) ♠00:36, 8 March 2008 (UTC)Reply
The maps you need from the site I sent you are from these ranges (I think)
N-34 Калинингр. обл, Литва, Польша
N-35 Литва, Белоруссия
N-36 Белоруссия, сред. Россия

Cheers --mrg3105 (comms) ♠12:08, 29 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

Vilnius

edit

Where did you source Vilnyus from? It seems to me that Vilnius is still the right name to use, if only because of Glantz and the use in the city article.--mrg3105 (comms) ♠00:36, 8 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

Memel Offensive Operation

edit

Nice job expanding the article; when you are done don't hesistate to nominate it at T:TDYK.--Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| talk 06:50, 13 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

Thank you! I'm hoping someone will come along and add a bit more on the Soviet role in the siege itself. There's not a whole lot written on these operations in English / translated into English, especially from the Soviet perspective. A photo or two might be helpful as well, though I haven't been able to find any as yet.
As with all the other operations I'm working on, I'm hoping to make a clear map in due courseEsdrasbarnevelt (talk) 09:25, 13 March 2008 (UTC)Reply
With reference to your comment in moving Battle of Memel to Memel Offensive Operation "In line with new Eastern Front structure and scope of added material" Please See talk Talk:Prague_Offensive#Prague_Strategic_Offensive_Operation
I have move the article back to its common English name see WP:NC and more specifically Wikipedia:WikiProject Military history/Style guide#Naming conventions. --Philip Baird Shearer (talk) 16:48, 25 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

Vilnus Offensive Operation

edit

Perhaps a redirect from Vilnus Offensive Operation may be in order, since we have articles on Operation Ostra Brama and Battle of Vilnius (1944). I have also redirected Lublin-Brest Offensive Operation to existing article on Lublin-Brest Offensive.--Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| talk 18:28, 13 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

Hi, I think my ideal solution for the article on the Vilnius Offensive Operation (the transliteration we've decided to go with) would be to write an article on the whole offensive, and then incorporate all the information in Battle of Vilnius (1944) into it as a section on the fight for the city itself. But a redirect might be a good temporary solution until the article's written.Esdrasbarnevelt (talk) 08:28, 14 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

Sources

Do you have any sources of Churchill asking Stalin to commence offensives in Germany (Visla-Oder and East-Prussian) in order to take the pressure off the Allies in the west due to the German offensive in the Ardennes?--mrg3105 (comms) ♠05:59, 5 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

I haven't seen any confirmation of this as yet. Hastings (in Armageddon) states that Stalin "professed to the Western Allies that he had advanced the timing of [the Vistula-Oder Offensive] in order to ease their difficulties in the Bulge battle. In reality, the essential schedule of the offensive had been determined back in November. Churchill expressed allied gratitude anyway" (p.279)
You may want to quote Hastings in the article to link Western European Theatre with the Eastern. I remembered this while reading your article, but could not think of which book in my library I can find this quickly, so thought I'd ask.--mrg3105 (comms) ♠11:59, 5 April 2008 (UTC)Reply
Found Bidermann, G.H., ... und litt an meiner Seite!. Krim—Kurland mit der 132. Infanterie-Division 1941-45. — Selbstverlag, 1995., so will have a read of that--mrg3105 (comms) ♠04:14, 16 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

Osovets

edit

I have looked and looked, and I have not been able to find much info. I have asked in two forums, abut not heard anything so far. Of note is that Osovets had a fortress, and apparently the notable thing about it is that the Germans had to surrender it to Soviet troops in 1939. However, I can;t find out if they made a fight for it. I do however have an OOB for Red Army for the city's liberation, and some other tidbits. Maybe enough for a stub...--mrg3105 (comms) ♠08:48, 15 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

Hi, have a look at Osovets Offensive Operation and see what I've been able to find so far. Not very much! A few online biographies of Soviet commanders mention the fight for the fortress and that they (or their units) distinguished themselves - so the German must have put up some kind of a fight. It seems to be that there was a heavy air bombardment as well.Esdrasbarnevelt (talk) 08:54, 15 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

Eastern Front & 33rd Army (Soviet Union)

edit

Hi Esdrasbarnevelt. Just wanted to say great work on the numerous E Front articles you've worked on. It ties in closely with my personal project, the Soviet formations on the Eastern Front. I'm currently trying to improve the quality of the 33rd Army article, which participated in several of the Op Bagration sub-offensives, so if there is any sourced text you could add to the material I've managed to round up so far, I would greatly appreciate it. Many thanks and kind regards Buckshot06 (talk) 12:10, 16 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

Hi Esdrasbarnevelt, as always, great work on the Sov operations. Are you aware Mrg's created a master list of all operations at Strategic operations of the Red Army in World War II? As you create the articles, please link them there - will aid coherent analysis of the whole picture. Cheers Buckshot06 (talk) 22:34, 18 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

Baltic Strategic Offensive Operation

--mrg3105 (comms) ♠09:42, 29 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

Tallinn is indeed my next, erm, 'tactical obective'. I'm just trying to work out how the offensive fits around the German withdrawal in Operation Aster. Once that's all in place I'll clean up the main Baltic article a bit :) Esdrasbarnevelt (talk) 09:46, 29 April 2008 (UTC)Reply
