Proposed deletion of George M. Davis Elementary School

edit

A proposed deletion template has been added to the article George M. Davis Elementary School, suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process. All contributions are appreciated, but this article may not satisfy Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and the deletion notice should explain why (see also "What Wikipedia is not" and Wikipedia's deletion policy). You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}} notice, but please explain why you disagree with the proposed deletion in your edit summary or on its talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised because even though removing the deletion notice will prevent deletion through the proposed deletion process, the article may still be deleted if it matches any of the speedy deletion criteria or it can be sent to Articles for Deletion, where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached. - Realkyhick (Talk to me) 06:25, 28 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

School articles

edit

Hi. I note you're creating a series of articles about elementary schools. Before you spend too much time on this, I should let you know that, generally, kindergarten / elementary school articles are very rarely kept, unless they demonstrate some notability out of the ordinary. For instance, Daniel Webster Elementary School is notable as it was a Blue Ribbon award winner in 1993-94, however Columbus Elementary School isn't notable. Schools that aren't notable generally get redirected to the article about the local school district. This isn't a hard and fast policy, but the general precedent set over many, many decisions on articles - have a look here : WP:OUTCOMES#Education. Incidentally, if a school is a Blue Ribbon award winner, then make that clear int he article - you'd neglected to mention it in the Daniel Webster one, so I added it for you. This will help avoid it being deleted/redirected. Drop me a line on my talk page if you want to discuss this or need any help. CultureDrone (talk) 07:22, 28 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

The article was redirected to the school district's article because this elementary school is not notable enough on its own for a stand-alone article. The school has not attained any special status such as Blue Ribbon School, nor is its structure noteworthy for historical value or similar attributes. Wikipedia's notability standards generally specify that high schools are inherently notable, but middle and elementary schools are not unless they stand out from other such schools due to awards, history, or something similar. When an article about a non-notable school such as Davis is written, it is changed to become a redirect to the school system article (if such exists), where you may add a short section about the school. - Realkyhick (Talk to me) 07:24, 28 August 2008 (UTC)Reply
Re the somewhat apparently inconsistent approach... the current precendent (delete/redirect etc.) has been formed over time. Obviously, a lot of school articles were created before/during the creation of this precedent - since the vast majority of 'inspection' or articles takes place when they're added to Wikipedia, this is therefore likely to catch newly created articles, rather than pre-existing ones. Since redirecting the articles isn't something that can be automated, this is a manual task, and therefore highly time-consuming. As I (or other long-term editors) come across these articles, they'll be redirected, and the number of these articles should diminish over time. You should also be aware that the existence of a similar article does not mean that a new article is therefore notable - see WP:OTHERSTUFF. CultureDrone (talk) 07:43, 28 August 2008 (UTC)Reply
Yes, articles are continually being reviewed, but with over 2.5 million articles, and only so many editors, you can appreciate it takes time :-) CultureDrone (talk) 07:59, 28 August 2008 (UTC)Reply
CultureDrone said it as well as I could. "Other similar articles exist" is a common argument used by those who seek to retain an article. it is also automatically invalid by Wikipedia policy. The existence of similar articles simply means that we haven't gotten around to weeding them out — and it's a mighty big field to weed. - Realkyhick (Talk to me) 08:19, 28 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

See the article talk page for the reasons why I contend that the sources do not describe the artworks as "murals". --Orlady (talk) 20:04, 14 September 2008 (UTC)Reply
