Out over the tips of your skis?
You're threatening to take any admin who dares to reverse you to ArbCom if they don't have the exact same level of overwhelming consensus for an unblock that would be required to reverse a DS sanction. That is identical to demanding that all your blocks be considered de facto DS blocks. Please tell me this was an isolated incident of you getting out over the tips of your skis. Please strike out the ArbCom threat, which has an extreme chilling affect on any uninvolved admin who sees a "normal" consensus to reduce or unblock in that discussion, but doesn't want to go thru an ArbCom case. --Floquenbeam (talk) 17:10, 26 March 2021 (UTC)

- As disappointing as it was inevitable. A day and a half and thousands of words, arguing over the difference between a BLP violation and a personal attack, no recognition of the actual problem. Benefit to the project? Nil. Though not nearly as disappointing and inevitable as events elsewhere in project space. Time to get back to the mainspace before I drive myself insane. - Consider that it might have gone differently if you didn't block right away. Next time, maybe don't block right away. Let your colleagues discuss and decide instead. Levivich harass/hound 13:50, 27 March 2021 (UTC)
- If you imposed a block knowing an unblock was "inevitable", that sounds like a violation of WP:POINT. A huge amount of editor time was wasted on a block you now say you knew would be overturned. Huh.
- Failure of the community to recognize the "actual problems" you see might be due to your refusal to participate in the discussion beyond a big wide swipe with the tar brush [1].
- And speaking of the tar brush, I was particularly wounded (metaphorically speaking, of course) by your claim that I have
a pattern of going over [the line], getting blocked, then backtracking and saying he didn't really mean it or the silly admin took his remarks out of context or a brigade of humourless editors is determined to rob him of his fun.
As an admin you know thatAccusations about personal behavior that lack evidence
constitute a WP:Personal attack, and thatSerious accusations require serious evidence, usually in the form of diffs and links.
I would hate to see you run afoul of that policy, particularly in the context of a highly visible discussion on our most-watched noticeboard. But no doubt you have lots of diffs that demonstrate the pattern you refer to. Please ping me when you've had a chance to assemble a list. Thanks.

- EEng, I'm not sure what you hope to achieve by posting here, beyond beating a dead horse still further. But since you're here ... I made what I considered to be a routine admin action, and an entirely proportionate response to disruptive editing. If I could relive the experience, I probably wouldn't block you again. Not because it wasn't the right thing to do (it was) or because it was procedurally incorrect (it wasn't), but because my Wikipedia time is limited and this is my hobby and I ended up spending most of the time I'd planned to spend on article work arguing in projectspace, which is something I try to avoid these days. It was only after the ANI thread developed, with people beginning to post bolded votes to unblock and talking about reducing the duration to "time served" without even feeling the need to give a rationale (or with rationales that closely resembled those at WP:Unblockables, that I realised the inevitability of your being unblocked. Point by point:
- As disappointing as it was inevitable. A day and a half and thousands of words, arguing over the difference between a BLP violation and a personal attack, no recognition of the actual problem. Benefit to the project? Nil. Though not nearly as disappointing and inevitable as events elsewhere in project space. Time to get back to the mainspace before I drive myself insane. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 10:58, 27 March 2021 (UTC)
- I certainly was not trying to make a point, beyond the point that you should comply with policy and be more mindful of the effect your comments can have when commenting on the biography of a real, living person. I don't think we have history; if we do, it didn't impact on my decision—I'd have taken the same action regardless of the username on the other end, with the possible exception of adjusting the duration to take account of experience and previous blocks.
- I don't think I used the term "actual problems", though the problems seemed to be well recognised by the majority of commenters, even those advocating a reduction or removal of the block. And please do not presume to lecture me on "refusal to participate"; Wikipedia is not compulsory (that's policy, btw) and I have a family and a full-time job. You would see, if you weren't so keen to see that my editing tends to be in sporadic bursts beyond very simple actions easily done from a phone in a quiet moment. I did everything I could to be available to respond to comments and questions about my actions without badgering every commenter who disagreed with me, but ultimately my input or lack thereof would have made little difference to the discussion.
- Far from tarring you, I consider that an accurate summary of your block log, the incidents leading to the blocks, and the comments in the ANI thread.
- I would politely suggest that there is little utility in continuing to discuss the matter, but of course you are entitled to a right of reply. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 20:44, 31 March 2021 (UTC)
I would politely suggest that there is little utility in continuing to discuss the matter
– As noted in conjunction with your rush to close the discussion overturning your administrative action, no big surprise that you'd suggest that.but of course you are entitled to a right of reply
– So gracious.do not presume to lecture me on "refusal to participate"
– OK, sure, you blocked me and then stayed silent during the subsequent discussion, other than to make a personal attack on me which you now can't back up with diffs. Your right, Mr. Admin.I did everything I could to be available to respond to comments and questions about my actions
– You posted once and went silent for 36 hours.I don't think I used the term "actual problems"
– Uh, yeah you did, right here in this thread (singular actual problem, but the point remains).adjusting the duration to take account of experience and previous blocks
– You said you made a "review" of my "history" [2] but you must not have reviewed very carefully, because then you'd have seen that my superficially impressive block log is really full of blocks ending like this one and this one and this one. You can keep chanting the plaint of unblockability, but like the wise man said [3]In some cases "unblockable" has meant "behaves inappropriately but has too many supporters to keep blocked". But in some cases it may mean "repeatedly triggers others to behave with inappropriate authoritarianism and is unblocked when it becomes apparent that the authoritarianism was inappropriate"
.not sure what you hope to achieve by posting here
– I was hoping to find out if you're the type to take responsibility for his actions. I got my answer.
- Still waiting for diffs for my
pattern of going over [the line], getting blocked, then backtracking and saying he didn't really mean it or the silly admin took his remarks out of context or a brigade of humourless editors is determined to rob him of his fun

pattern of going over [the line], getting blocked, then backtracking
was just that -- bullshit that he can't back up. That kind of talk becomes an echo chamber, so it's useful to have the vacuity of it on the record for the future. EEng 14:49, 1 April 2021 (UTC)

- Parabolist has a point. Do you really think your conduct was appropriate? Or that doubling down on it when you were asked to stop (instead of asking for outside opinions or acknowledging that maybe you'd crossed a line) was sensible? I don't think you're a bad editor, but I think you sometimes cross the line from being funny or strident into being disruptive and this was definitely one of those times. I would strongly recommend that you rethink your approach next time somebody tells you you've crossed the line, otherwise you'll end up blocked again and there'll be another waste of everyone's time at ANI. - Do you hear yourself? "How about next time you do what some high-handed admin tells you to do, whether they've got the wrong end of the stick or not, 'cause otherwise someone like me who just shoots from the hip will waste more of everyone's time blocking you again." You thought I was disruptive; the community does not. You, in your magnificaent self-certainty, imposed your judgment before the community's discussion had even begun. Jesus, have you learned nothing from this? And no, I don't mean, "Yeah, I learned that EEng is unblockable", because I certainly am not. I just have a better understanding than you of the varieties of ways in which thoughtful grownups -- including Wikipedia editors -- interact.

– I understand and accept that I was more forceful than was helpful, especially in dealing with an IP. But like I said elsewhere [4],if GW had simply said, "To be clear, you're criticizing the idea of using tree in the article, not your fellow editors, right?", I'm sure I would have said, "Well, I did let myself vent a bit there, and I know I need to keep in mind that not everyone understands why we can't incorporate an avant-garde wording like tree into an article", and that would have been the end of it. But no, she had to go all ex-arbitrator authoritarian on me.
- As far as I'm concerned my job is done here. Up, up, and AWAY! EEng 14:49, 1 April 2021 (UTC)

Anomobryum
What's happening on the Anomobryum article? Is it or is it not supposed to be protected? I have been watching recent changes this past 15 minutes and can make no sense of what is happening there. I reverted Ashleyyoursmile who is not actually a vandal, and he reverted me back and asked me to explain myself while I (in tandem) told him not to keep adding PP. Sorry I am befuddled!! --Coldtrack (talk) 19:56, 1 April 2021 (UTC)
- @Coldtrack: The article has been the target of a serial sockpuppeteer recently, including two new accounts today, although the edit they were making (removing the protection template) was technically correct. I've made a null edit now to remove the rollback link from the sock's edit which will hopefully make clear that there should be no more reverting. If any more accounts come out of the woodwork, I'll semi-protect the article again. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 20:13, 1 April 2021 (UTC)
- OK thanks for clarifying. So the article for this past half hour and at present is not protected. So Ashleyyoursmile was wrong on both occasions to restore the template. I don't do much recent patrol activity. What is the purpose of the null edit? --Coldtrack (talk) 20:18, 1 April 2021 (UTC)
- Coldtrack, yes I was wrong to revert on both occasions and my edits were immediate consequences of reverting the sock. Apologies. Ashleyyoursmile! 20:21, 1 April 2021 (UTC)
- Ashleyyoursmile, have no worries. It's all getting into focus now! --Coldtrack (talk) 20:23, 1 April 2021 (UTC)
- Coldtrack, the null edit made by Harry is to ensure that the last revision is not the one made by the sock, so the if more accounts arrive, they won't be able to undo earlier versions. Ashleyyoursmile! 20:28, 1 April 2021 (UTC)

Question
Since this was several years ago, I have to ask you about: "conditional unblock: ARBPIA topic ban remains in effect" [5], the topic ban is still in effect? --Supreme Deliciousness (talk) 12:03, 2 April 2021 (UTC)
- I haven't been as active at AE as I once was for some years but looking at the logs it appears I imposed the topic ban in 2014. While that was indeed a long time ago, I can't find evidence of any appeal. I was entirely inactive for a year but I don't recall being notified. Loose Women - Kaye Adams
Hi HJ Mitchell,
Would you consider Kaye Adams as a regular presenter on Loose Women again? She has presented 6 Episodes within the last 3 weeks.

Invitation to participate in DS Consultation
Hi HJ Mitchell. I'm not sure if you're aware of the current community consultation around Discretionary Sanctions but as someone who has participated in DS related activities recently I'd like to invite you to participate. You have the opportunity to participate at whatever level you wish; there are questions that are higher level (theoreticaly) in scope as well as opportunities to give feedback about specific areas of DS. The consultation will run through April 25th and I hope you'll participate. Best, Barkeep49 (talk) 15:22, 14 April 2021 (UTC)
- Barkeep49, I was vaguely aware of it but it had dropped off my radar. Thanks for jogging my memory. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 15:28, 14 April 2021 (UTC)

On disruptive editing and blocks
Hi. Ekaditya, the editor I reported at WP:ANV is disruptively editing, edit warring against an established consensus past a fourth-level warning. Where do I have to report them in order for them to be temporarily blocked and stop the disruption? I can't stop it on my own, or I'll end up violating the 3-RR. Or can you just block them but not for vandalizing but for disruptively editing? —El Millo (talk) 07:58, 21 April 2021 (UTC)
- Facu-el Millo, as a very general rule of thumb, if it takes more than a sentence or two to explain or a couple of minutes to look into, it doesn't belong at AIV. AIV is very much a summary process for obvious cases to free up the other noticeboards. WP:ANI is the best place to get more eyes on difficult or complicated situations. TFA
Thank you today for Death of Mark Saunders, introduced: "Another in my occasional series of articles on British police shootings. This one is interesting because (unlike most such incidents), the person shot was not a career criminal or an armed robber pointing a gun at somebody's head, but an upper-middle-class lawyer with a drink problem and a legally owned shotgun. This incident didn't attract as much academic attention as some of the others, but The Guardian covered the investigation and the inquest in detail from start to finish. I think these are important stories to tell, and I'd like to think this article tells this one fairly."! --Gerda Arendt (talk) 06:29, 6 May 2021 (UTC)

Sinn Féin
Hello HJ! My name is Ben, and I am a somewhat new editor to Wikipedia. Been editing for I'd say a year and a half now! But anyways, I am here to ask, if you would be so kind, for permanent pending changes protection for the article Sinn Féin. It is a political party that has a troubled past after being the political wing of various paramilitaries during a conflict known as The Troubles, and since recently is a hot topic once again as they won an election in 2020 for the first time since 1919. This article is extremely controversial due to its troubled past and as a result, is often a very high target for vandalism and sometimes even sockpuppetry. However meaningful and sourced additions from unregistered users should have the ability to add on to it. So I am hereby requesting the least strict form of protection, in permanent pending changes protection. If you could do this for the article, that would be highly appreciated by me and many more hardcore contributors to this specific topic. Thanks for your consideration! B. M. L. Peters (talk) 20:19, 11 May 2021 (UTC)
- Note, this request was made previously to WP:RPP on the 12th March and it was declined as not enough recent disruption on the article and plenty of eyes. Canterbury Tail talk 21:09, 11 May 2021 (UTC)
- Additionally they have also directly asked User:Mjroots, User:El C, so at this point B. M. L. Peters is admin shopping to get a protection on a page that isn't needed. Canterbury Tail talk 21:14, 11 May 2021 (UTC)

A Request
Hello, I am User:SRV2021. I was wanting to request that https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Imperial_Coat_of_Arms_of_the_Mughal_dynasty.png be deleted and any pages on-line with it be removed of it. Also, I mistakenly edited while being signed out so my IP shows, so if that can be removed as well I would appreciate it. As for the file link, if you check the description I have commented on its false nature. It was submitted to Wikipedia in bad faith or by mistake. I will delete my user account soon. My last request is that this comment on your talk page be deleted when you have finished with the rest of my request. Thank you so much for your help HJ, all the best!

Template:Infobox outbreak is currently template-editor protected. At just 555 transclusions this seems excessive. Module:Medical cases chart is only extended-confirmed protected which I think would be more appropriate. The talk page is quite active with suggested changes so I think it would be helpful to widen the pool of people who can edit it. As you protected it would you consider a downgrade? - Consensus was reached to deprecate Wikipedia:Editor assistance.
- Following a Request for Comment the Book namespace was deprecated.
- Wikimedia previously used the IRC network Freenode. However, due to changes over who controlled the network with reports of a forceful takeover by several ex-staff members, the Wikimedia IRC Group Contacts decided to move to the new Libera Chat network. It has been reported that Wikimedia related channels on Freenode have been forcibly taken over if they pointed members to Libera. There is a migration guide and Wikimedia discussions about this.
- After a Clarification request, the Arbitration Committee modified Remedy 5 of the Antisemitism in Poland case. This means sourcing expectations are a discretionary sanction instead of being present on all articles. It also details using the talk page or the Reliable Sources Noticeboard to discuss disputed sources.

User talk:Jimbo Wales
Please consider unprotecting User talk:Jimbo Wales. Indefinite protection makes a mockery of Jimbo's "open door policy" (the unprotected subpage is a joke, I'm pretty sure he's forgotten about it), and the level of disruption hasn't changed much compared to the months before the protection was applied. - Consensus has been reached to delete all books in the book namespace. There was rough consensus that the deleted books should still be available on request at WP:REFUND even after the namespace is removed.
- An RfC is open to discuss the next steps following a trial which automatically applied pending changes to TFAs.
- IP addresses of unregistered users are to be hidden from everyone. There is a rough draft of how IP addresses may be shown to users who need to see them. This currently details allowing administrators, checkusers, stewards and those with a new usergroup to view the full IP address of unregistered users. Editors with at least 500 edits and an account over a year old will be able to see all but the end of the IP address in the proposal. The ability to see the IP addresses hidden behind the mask would be dependent on agreeing to not share the parts of the IP address they can see with those who do not have access to the same information. Accessing part of or the full IP address of a masked editor would also be logged. Comments on the draft are being welcomed at the talk page.
- The community authorised COVID-19 general sanctions have been superseded by the COVID-19 discretionary sanctions following a motion at a case request. Alerts given and sanctions placed under the community authorised general sanctions are now considered alerts for and sanctions under the new discretionary sanctions.
Chandler's Ford shooting scheduled for TFA
This is to let you know that the above article has been scheduled as today's featured article for 24 August, 2021. Please check that the article needs no amendments. A coordinator will draft a blurb - based on your draft if the TFA came via TFA requests, or from an existing blurb on the FAC talk page if one has been posted. Feel free to comment on this. We suggest that you watchlist Wikipedia:Main Page/Errors from the day before this appears on Main Page. Thanks and congratulations on your work. Gog the Mild (talk) 15:42, 5 July 2021 (UTC)

- An RfC is open to add a delay of one week from nomination to deletion for G13 speedy deletions.
- Last week all wikis were very slow or not accessible for 30 minutes. This was due to server lag caused by regenerating dynamic lists on the Russian Wikinews after a large bulk import. (T287380)

TFA
Thank you today for Chandler's Ford shooting, introduced: "This is a slightly thinner article, on a slightly more recent subject, than I normally bring here but I've had little luck in attracting feedback (though I'm grateful to SchroCat for casting an eye and helping to dig up some more sources). It's part of my back-burner project on British police shootings. This one wasn't especially controversial in that the people shot were pointing a loaded handgun at a security guard, but police shootings in Britain are few and far between so they always attract plenty of attention and they're the subject of some academic study. This one raised some interesting questions about police tactics, being a pre-planned operation with the stated aim of apprehending the robbers. Also of note is that the whole event was caught on video by the police, and (somewhat sensationally) the video of the shooting was later played in court at the trial of the surviving gang members."! --Gerda Arendt (talk) 06:33, 24 August 2021 (UTC)

Portsmouth War Memorial scheduled for TFA
This is to let you know that the Portsmouth War Memorial article has been scheduled as today's featured article for October 23, 2021. Please check the article needs no amendments. If you're interested in editing the main page text, you're welcome to do so at Wikipedia:Today's featured article/October 23, 2021, but note that a coordinator will trim the lead to around 1000 characters anyway, so you aren't obliged to do so.

2 years, 270 days, 12 hours, 21 minutes and 36 seconds??
Regarding this: [6] ... I must know. --Floquenbeam (talk) 19:14, 30 September 2021 (UTC)
- Floquenbeam, It's 1001 days but it doesn't display properly because of a change to MediaWiki a few years ago! :) In other words, an arbitrarily long duration that's more than a year and less than forever because we're not supposed to indef IPs. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 19:22, 30 September 2021 (UTC)
- LOL. So 1001.000 days from now, once it goes thru the MediaWiki sausage grinder, comes out with a leftover fraction of days. That's funny. I can guess why, but still funny. OK, that makes sense (well, no, but that explains it). While I'm here, don't think I've said "hi" in a while. So Hi. Hope you and yours are well. --Floquenbeam (talk) 19:32, 30 September 2021 (UTC)
- Floquenbeam, it used to display as "1001 days" and it makes me a little bit sad that it doesn't any more, but the slightly garbled duration is still amusing I suppose. I'm good, thanks. I try to stick to writing articles and blocking vandals on the wiki these days and leave the politics to others. I got a promotion at work a few months ago so I've not had the time to be on-wiki as much as I'd like. I've got a few days off and the mrs is working so I'm trying to finish off a back-burner project and procrastinating by clearing out AIV! Hope things are okay with you? - Hello, Harry. I just dropped by to say how just like old times it has been over the last day or so, seeing your messages at AIV, which I haven't seen for years, but which remind me of far off days, when you practically lived at AIV. What an interesting coincidence that when I got here I found this conversation about your 1001 night blocks, because they are the thing which has most stuck in my memory about you from all those years ago. (Well, apart from hats, which I won't mention, because I promised you I wouldn't.) Floquenbeam, I remember when Harry's blocks stopped showing up as 1001 days, and switched to the bizarre kind of thing you noticed, about ten years or so back. I assumed it was an accidental side effect of some software change, but I met one of the developers at a meetup, and he told me it was quite deliberate. He also explained why it had been done, but I'm afraid at the end of it I could only think of what Byron once wrote about Coleridge: "I wish he would explain his explanation." JBW (talk) 12:54, 1 October 2021 (UTC)
- Good to see you're still around, James! I pop in when I can but I don't have the time that I used to, and I prefer to spend it in the mainspace but I still get a kick out of blocking vandals. We'll have to have a pint one day now that it's possible again, and I promise we won't discuss hats! ;) HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 13:03, 1 October 2021 (UTC)
- Goodness, "James". I am so unused to people calling me that now that it comes as a bit of a shock. JBW (talk) 13:18, 1 October 2021 (UTC)
- I suppose it will have to remain one of life's mysteries; It's unlikely I would understand an explanation either. And yes, I agree it was good to see Harry's name pop up on my watchlist. --Floquenbeam (talk) 14:51, 1 October 2021 (UTC)

Administrators' newsletter – October 2021
News and updates for administrators from the past month (September 2021).
- Following an RfC, extended confirmed protection may be used preemptively on certain high-risk templates.
- Following a discussion at the Village Pump, there is consensus to treat discord logs the same as IRC logs. This means that discord logs will be oversighted if posted onwiki.
- DiscussionTools has superseded Enterprisey's reply-link script. Editors may switch using the "Discussion tools" checkbox under Preferences → Beta features.
- A motion has standardised the 500/30 (extended confirmed) restrictions placed by the Arbitration Committee. The standardised restriction is now listed in the Arbitration Committee's procedures.
- Following the closure of the Iranian politics case, standard discretionary sanctions are authorized for all edits about, and all pages related to, post-1978 Iranian politics, broadly construed.
- The Arbitration Committee encourages uninvolved administrators to use the discretionary sanctions procedure in topic areas where it is authorised to facilitate consensus in RfCs. This includes, but is not limited to, enforcing sectioned comments, word/diff limits and moratoriums on a particular topic from being brought in an RfC for up to a year.
- Editors have approved expanding the trial of Growth Features from 2% of new accounts to 25%, and the share of newcomers getting mentorship from 2% to 5%. Experienced editors are invited to add themselves to the mentor list.
- The community consultation phase of the 2021 CheckUser and Oversight appointments process is open for editors to provide comments and ask questions to candidates.
Defining vandalism
If an editor, after being indefinitely blocked on Commons for vandalism, goes on to Wikipedia and places {{Sex}}, {{Pornography}} and {{Porn-stub}} templates on a random editor's Talk page, and you refuse to call it vandalism, then how do you call such behaviour? — kashmīrī TALK 17:26, 1 October 2021 (UTC)

- @SQL and GeneralNotability: Thank you for bringing this to my attention. Without context, I assumed it was a troll account. This is exactly the sort of scenario the red message is for, so thank you. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 08:03, 12 October 2021 (UTC)
- Well hey, speaking of red things, you let that bright-red userbox on my userpage come true, if only for a while. Plus I got answers to a few things I'd been wondering about Android push notifications when blocked. My only regret with this is that I'll have to edit the bit on my disclosures page that says "I have never been blocked on any account/IP other than my main one."
