Welcome!

Hello, I am Jack. I am very much enjoying being a part of Wikipedia. It is a fantastic and valuable resource. I have made quite a few contributions to Wikipedia on subjects that (i like to think) I know a bit about...

I always enjoy lively and interesting debate, as I feel that I can learn a lot from it. So if you have any comments about any of my articles or edits then I would love to read your thoughts.

I have put some subject headers below, noting some of the edits and articles of mine that I think people may like to comment on. Feel free to comment as you like, but please do not delete my comments.

I believe that discussion is a key part of human life and a great way to learn and make ourselves richer and better as people. All of my views are important to me and I ask people to respect them, but I also respect the views of others. I love to hear other people's opinions and I am always open to the fact that I have much to learn from other people. Thank you.

Contributions to the Diego Maradona Article

edit

Article

I feel that the controversies surrounding this person, should be given more prominence in the article. He was a great talent, but also a massively contraversial figure. If you mention maradona to people, they will talk about his criminal acts, drug use, the hand of God goal etc, just as much as his talent.

I have added to the description of the 1986 world cup quarter final against England, the fact that, due to the Hand of God goal he is still a hated figure in England. I also added information about the 1988 invitational match at Wembley to celebrate the centenary of the English Football League (which really needs an article, by the way!!) during which he was consistently bood.

I also added some information about the controversy surrounding the 2000 player of the century award and the flawed interned poll which led to it. I have also put this information in the article about Pelé, who in my opinion was the greatest player to play the game and was a gentlemen and an ambassador for the sport throughout.

Compromises

I slightly revised some of this on June 30th. My edits regarding the invitational match at Wembley in 1988 and regarding the controversy surrounding the 2000 player of the century vote were removed. The person who removed them cited non-neutrality and non-referencing as a reason. I have reinststed them adding sources, where possible and trying to make them more neutral.

I feel that a great deal of the Diego Maradona article is not at all neutral.

Reagrding the critics to the Internet Poll, accusation of Argentine machines overloading the FIFA servers with votes sound just a lame excuse, since geolocation allows you to know were is the vote comming form. On the other hand, a more valid critic to the poll was that the younger internet users haven't seen Pele playing, and thus might have voted for the Argentinian not reflecting the view of the average person in the world. Anyhow, you need references for any of them. Mariano(t/c) 07:32, 19 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

Contributions to the AIDS Article

edit

Article

I have made a few edits on this page about the Catholic Church's role in the area. I believe that it is grossly unfair to lay the blaim for the spread of AIDS at the Church's door. There are a few points to note in this regard:

  • The Catholic Church has always pushed abstinence as a way of preventing AIDS. All experts agree that this is the very best way of preventing the spread of the disease.
  • The Catholic Church is not - as many people think - explicitly against the use of contraception within marriage, if the reason for doing so is to prevent the spread of disease. The principle of double effect applies here, which very few people seem to realise.
  • The Catholic Church cannot be held responsible for the lack of contraception use in the case of unmarried people: sex outside of marriage is a far far greater sin in the eyes of Catholics. Therefore it is unrealistic to expect that those Catholics are refusing to use contraception because of their faith, of they are so willing to commit a far bigger sin. It's like stealing a car and then worrying that you forgot to empty the ashtray!

I think that this is an important point to make and should be added to any articles about the Church's role in the spread of AIDS.
