WPCleaner 2.0
Hello Johnny Au.
I would like to inform you that a new version of WPCleaner is available replacing the old version (v1.43) dating back to almost a year. Unfortunately, going from version 1.43 to 2.0 automatically isn't possible and will require a new installation. It's necessary to install version 2.0 to take advantage of updates and bug fixes. Version 1.43 will have to be uninstalled manually, as there are no more updates for it.
The installation procedure is described at Wikipedia:WPCleaner/Installation.
Note: for usage in Bot mode, I strongly advise to check the modifications to be sure that the tasks run correctly

- It doesn't work for me. I have posted the problem in the WPCleaner talk page. Johnny Au (talk/contributions) 00:31, 6 September 2018 (UTC)
- It now works. It's just slow. Very slow. Slower than molasses during a bitter winter night. It was faster before. Johnny Au (talk/contributions) 00:24, 11 September 2018 (UTC)
- Strange. You're the only one reporting that it's slow: is there any specific part that is slow, or is it everything ? Maybe something to do with Mac... --NicoV (Talk on frwiki) 07:56, 12 September 2018 (UTC)
- It takes a very long time to analyze data and to submit changes. It takes a few minutes even on an average-length article. Johnny Au (talk/contributions) 12:40, 12 September 2018 (UTC)
- Strange... Do you have a file WPCleaner.log created somewhere when using 2.0 ? If so, can you delete it, and change the configuration in the options to check everything in the Debug tab. Then try working a bit and send me the WPCleaner.log file ? --NicoV (Talk on frwiki) 08:06, 18 September 2018 (UTC)
- It loads very quickly when it comes to very short articles, but for longer articles, it takes a very long time to analyze data and an even longer time to submit changes.

- @NicoV: I have calculated how long it loads for a medium-length article (approximately 30kB to 40kB): approximately two minutes for analyzing and approximately two minutes for submitting. Johnny Au (talk/contributions) 03:14, 8 October 2018 (UTC)
- @Johnny Au: I've made some performance improvements on AWB regular expressions, and also added a possibility to have more detailed logs for performance analysis, see Wikipedia talk:WPCleaner#Very slow on some pages. Do you see an improvement? Otherwise, can you try activating the detailed logs and post them so I can try to find out where it takes too much time. For medium-length articles, the problem can also be related to syntax highlighting: in the options, you can reduce the maximum size where WPCleaner will highlight the syntax (by default, it should be at 40kB, but a page between 30kB and 40kB can take a long time for syntax highlighting...). --NicoV (Talk on frwiki) 08:52, 8 January 2020 (UTC)

- @NicoV: It's much faster and smoother now. Thank you so much for making the improvements and have a great day. Johnny Au (talk/contributions) 02:08, 15 January 2020 (UTC)

Since the last newsletter, the Editing Team has wrapped up most of their work on the 2017 wikitext editor and the visual diff tool. The team has begun investigating the needs of editors who use mobile devices. Their workboard is available in Phabricator. Their current priorities are fixing bugs and improving mobile editing.
Recent changes
- The Editing Team has published an initial report about mobile editing.
- The Editing Team has begun a design study of visual editing on the mobile website. New editors have trouble doing basic tasks on a smartphone, such as adding links to Wikipedia articles. You can read the report.
- The Reading Team is working on a separate mobile-based contributions project.
- The 2006 wikitext editor is no longer supported. If you used that toolbar, then you will no longer see any toolbar. You may choose another editing tool in your editing preferences, local gadgets, or beta features.
- The Editing Team described the history and status of VisualEditor in this recorded public presentation (starting at the 29-minute, 30-second mark).
- The Language Team released a new version of Content Translation (CX2) last month on International Translation Day. It integrates the visual editor to support templates, tables, and images. It also produces better wikitext when the translated article is published.[1]
Let's work together
- The Editing Team wants to improve visual editing on the mobile website. Please read their ideas and tell the team what you think would help editors who use the mobile site.
- The Community Wishlist Survey begins next week.
- If you are not reading this in your preferred language, then please help us with translations! Subscribe to the Translators mailing list or contact us directly. We will notify you when the next issue is ready for translation. Thank you!
The article Toronto you nominated as a good article has failed ; see Talk:Toronto for reasons why the nomination failed. If or when these points have been taken care of, you may apply for a new nomination of the article. Catrìona (talk) 16:49, 31 December 2018 (UTC)
- I also have others review and edit the article, given its notability as the most populous city in a G7 country and one of the world's most important cities, important and significant enough to justify indefinite semi-protection, which has been proven during the two-week temporary unprotection in late November 2016 and was given indefinite semi-protection again in early December 2016. Johnny Au (talk/contributions) 03:20, 4 January 2019 (UTC)
Rapid transit in Canada
FYI: For a third time (as per older discussions), Mattximus wishes to include LRT in the article Rapid transit in Canada, thus redefining "rapid transit" to include LRT and perhaps BRT. Mattximus justifies putting Line 5 Eglinton into the article because Line 5 is partly underground and because it has been described as "rapid transit" on its official website. The discussion is at Talk:Rapid transit in Canada#Line 5 of the Toronto Subway is considered rapid transit. There are four supporting this change and three opposed. You had commented on one of the earlier discussions on the topic. TheTrolleyPole (talk) 12:39, 2 April 2019 (UTC)
- I replied there and even added portal links in the main article. That article is very short (but not short enough to be a stub), despite there being some upcoming rapid transit systems in various major Canadian municipalities. Johnny Au (talk/contributions) 12:57, 2 April 2019 (UTC)

To anyone reading my user talk page, please feel free to ask a question to me and I will answer it as promptly as possible. Thank you. Johnny Au (talk/contributions) 14:13, 1 June 2019 (UTC)
- The meetup was over and it was such a great experience. I even fixed a table in the Timeline of Toronto history article by merging two tables that should be a single table. At least I get to help others. Johnny Au (talk/contributions) 00:53, 2 June 2019 (UTC)

Did you know?
Welcome back to the Editing newsletter.
Since the last newsletter, the team has released two new features for the mobile visual editor and has started developing three more. All of this work is part of the team's goal to make editing on mobile web simpler.
Before talking about the team's recent releases, we have a question for you:
Are you willing to try a new way to add and change links?
If you are interested, we would value your input! You can try this new link tool in the mobile visual editor on a separate wiki.
Follow these instructions and share your experience:
Recent releases
The mobile visual editor is a simpler editing tool for smartphones, tablets and some smartwatches using the mobile site. The Editing team has recently launched two new features to improve the mobile visual editor:
- Section editing
- The purpose is to help contributors focus on their edits.
- The team studied this with an A/B test. This test showed that contributors who could use section editing were one percent more likely to publish the edits they started than people with only full-page editing.
- Loading overlay
- The purpose is to smooth the transition between reading and editing.
Section editing and the new loading overlay are now available to everyone using the mobile visual editor.
New and active projects
This is a list of our most active projects. Watch these pages to learn about project updates and to share your input on new designs, prototypes and research findings.
- Edit cards: This is a clearer way to add and edit links, citations, images, templates, etc. in articles. You can try this feature now. Go here to see how: 📲Try Edit Cards.
- Mobile toolbar refresh: This project will learn if contributors are more successful when the editing tools are easier to recognize.
- Mobile visual editor availability: This A/B test asks: Are newer contributors more successful if they use the mobile visual editor? We are collaborating with 20 Wikipedias to answer this question.
- Usability improvements: This project will make the mobile visual editor easier to use. The goal is to let contributors stay focused on editing and to feel more confident in the editing tools.
Looking ahead
- Wikimania: Several members of the Editing Team will be attending Wikimania in August 2019. They will lead a session about mobile editing in the Community Growth space. Talk to them about how editing can be improved.
- Talk Pages: In the coming months, the Editing Team will begin improving talk pages and communication on the wikis.
Learning more
The VisualEditor on mobile is a good place to learn more about the projects on which we are working. The team wants to talk with you about anything related to editing. If you want a discussion or an inquiry, please leave a message at Talk:VisualEditor on mobile.

Editing News #2 – Mobile editing and talk pages – October 2019
Read this in another language • Subscription list for this multilingual newsletter
Inside this newsletter, the Editing team talks about their work on the mobile visual editor, on the new talk pages project, and at Wikimania 2019.
Help
What talk page interactions do you remember? Is it a story about how someone helped you to learn something new? Is it a story about how someone helped you get involved in a group? Is it a story about how you convinced a vandal to be constructive? Something else? Whatever your story is, we want to hear it!
Please tell us a story about how you used a talk page. Please share a link to a memorable discussion or describe it on the talk page for this project. The team would value your examples. These examples will help everyone develop a shared understanding of what this project should support and encourage.
Talk Pages
The Talk Pages Consultation was a global consultation to define better tools for wiki communication. From February through June 2019, more than 500 volunteers on 20 wikis, across 15 languages and multiple projects, came together with members of the Foundation to create a product direction for a set of discussion tools. The Phase 2 Report of the Talk Page Consultation was published in August. It summarizes the product direction the team has started to work on, which you can read more about here: Talk Page Project project page.
The team needs and wants your help at this early stage. They are starting to develop the first idea. Please add your name to the "Getting involved" section of the project page, if you would like to hear about opportunities to participate.
Mobile visual editor
The Editing team is trying to make it simpler to edit on mobile devices. The team is changing the visual editor on mobile. If you have something to say about editing on a mobile device, please leave a message at Talk:VisualEditor on mobile.
- On 3 September, the Editing team released version 3 of Edit Cards. Anyone could use the new version in the mobile visual editor.
- There is an updated design on the Edit Card for adding and modifying links. There is also a new combined workflow for editing a link's display text and target.
- Feedback: You can try the new Edit Cards by opening the mobile visual editor on a smartphone or tablet computer, regardless of operating system. Please post your feedback on the Edit cards talk page.
- In September, the Editing team updated the mobile visual editor's editing toolbar. Anyone could see these changes in the mobile visual editor.
- One toolbar: All of the editing tools are located in one toolbar. Previously, the toolbar changed when you clicked on different things.
- New navigation: The buttons for moving forward and backwards in the edit flow have changed.
- Seamless switching: an improved workflow for switching between the visual and wikitext modes.
- Feedback: You can try the refreshed toolbar by opening the mobile VisualEditor on a smartphone or tablet computer, regardless of the operating system. Please post your feedback on the Toolbar feedback talk page.
Wikimania
The Editing Team attended Wikimania 2019 in Sweden. They led a session on the mobile visual editor and a session on the new talk pages project. They tested two new features in the mobile visual editor with contributors. You can read more about what the team did and learned in the team's report on Wikimania 2019.
Looking ahead
- Talk Pages Project: The team is thinking about the first set of proposed changes. The team will be working with a few communities to pilot those changes. The best way to stay informed is by adding your username to the list on the project page: Getting involved.
- Testing the mobile visual editor as the default: The Editing team plans to post results before the end of the calendar year. The best way to stay informed is by adding the project page to your watchlist: VisualEditor as mobile default project page.
- Measuring the impact of Edit Cards: The Editing team hopes to share results in November. This study asks whether the project helped editors add links and citations. The best way to stay informed is by adding the project page to your watchlist: Edit Cards project page.

I based my calculations from data dumps (taken from https://dumps.wikimedia.org/enwiki) a few years before the number of words statistics were included in Special:Statistics in December 2017. Thank you so much for letting me know. From now on, per WP:OR, my analysis stays with me, not on Wikipedia. Johnny Au (talk/contributions) 14:45, 24 November 2019 (UTC)
- I have ceased updating the Excel spreadsheet as it served its purpose as a stopgap and is now redundant and inaccurate. Johnny Au (talk/contributions) 01:50, 16 December 2020 (UTC)

The Editing team has been working on the talk pages project. The goal of the talk pages project is to help contributors communicate on wiki more easily. This project is the result of the Talk pages consultation 2019.
The team is building a new tool for replying to comments now. This early version can sign and indent comments automatically. Please test the new Reply tool.
- On 31 March 2020, the new reply tool was offered as a Beta Feature editors at four Wikipedias: Arabic, Dutch, French, and Hungarian. If your community also wants early access to the new tool, contact User:Whatamidoing (WMF).
- The team is planning some upcoming changes. Please review the proposed design and share your thoughts on the talk page. The team will test features such as:
- an easy way to mention another editor ("pinging"),
- a rich-text visual editing option, and
- other features identified through user testing or recommended by editors.
To hear more about Editing Team updates, please add your name to the "Get involved" section of the project page. You can also watch these pages: the main project page, Updates, Replying, and User testing.

504 King and 514 Cherry
I plan on eventually proposing a merge of these 2 articles because I think the 514 is effectively part of the 504's history. The history section of the 504 King article even mentions the opening of the 514. The routes of each line are very similar so most of the prose for the route section of 514 Cherry is already at 504 King. Due to these, as well as a combined prose size of 12,621 (The King Street Transit Priority Corridor is at 12,611), I think the 2 articles should be merged. I would like your opinion on this before I propose this merge.[n 1]

- ^ There may be other factors I forgot to consider
- @Username6892: Given how similar 514 Cherry is to 504 King, I support the merger. Johnny Au (talk/contributions) 00:37, 25 May 2020 (UTC)

This edition of the Editing newsletter includes information the Wikipedia:Talk pages project, an effort to help contributors communicate on wiki more easily. The central project page is on MediaWiki.org.
- Reply tool: This is available as a Beta Feature at the four partner wikis (Arabic, Dutch, French, and Hungarian Wikipedias). The Beta Feature will get new features soon. The new features include writing comments in a new visual editing mode and pinging other users by typing
@
as is done in newer social media platforms. You can test the new features on the Beta Cluster. Some other wikis will have a chance to try the Beta Feature in the coming months. - New requirements for user signatures: Soon, users will not be able to save invalid custom signatures in Special:Preferences. This will reduce signature spoofing, prevent page corruption, and make new talk page tools more reliable. Most editors will not be affected.
- New discussion tool: The Editing team is beginning work on a simpler process for starting new discussions. You can see the initial design on the project page.
- Research on the use of talk pages: The Editing team worked with the Wikimedia research team to study how talk pages help editors improve articles. We learned that new editors who use talk pages make more edits to the main namespace than new editors who don't use talk pages.
Editing news 2020 #3
Seven years ago this week, the Editing team made the visual editor available by default to all logged-in editors using the desktop site at the English Wikipedia. Here's what happened since its introduction:
- The 50 millionth edit using the visual editor on desktop was made this year. More than 10 million edits have been made here at the English Wikipedia.
- More than 2 million new articles have been created in the visual editor. More than 600,000 of these new articles were created during 2019.
- Almost 5 million edits on the mobile site have been made with the visual editor. Most of these edits have been made since the Editing team started improving the mobile visual editor in 2018.
- The proportion of all edits made using the visual editor has been increasing every year.
- Editors have made more than 7 million edits in the 2017 wikitext editor, including starting 600,000 new articles in it. The 2017 wikitext editor is VisualEditor's built-in wikitext mode. You can enable it in your preferences.
- On 17 November 2019, the first Wikipedia edit from outer space was made in the mobile visual editor.
- In 2019, 35 percent of the edits by newcomers, and half of their first edits, were made using the visual editor. This percentage has been increasing every year since the tool first became available.

Hi Johnny, the first one is the normal version, it's in F major, but the second one, it's my radio, the key is a bit different, I'm right? 138.229.19.202 (talk) 00:57, 28 July 2020 (UTC) I want to understand why the key is change on my radio, but when I'm listening this song in another radio, it's the original key. 138.229.19.202 (talk) 14:42, 28 July 2020 (UTC)

Not updating COVID-19 numbers in Ontario anymore?
Just a heads-up. Dr. Universe (talk) 22:54, 26 August 2020 (UTC)
- Just to let you know, CaffeinAddict mainly does the updating, not me. Johnny Au (talk/contributions) 00:36, 27 August 2020 (UTC)
I pretty much update the infobox every day unless someone gets to it first. Unless you mean the statistics? CaffeinAddict (talk) 02:02, 27 August 2020 (UTC)
- @Dr. Universe: Can you clarify? Johnny Au (talk/contributions) 13:53, 27 August 2020 (UTC)
The timeline graph only goes up to August 18th and the statistics histogram only goes up to August 23rd. It used to be updated every day! Dr. Universe (talk) 15:03, 27 August 2020 (UTC)
@CaffeinAddict: @Johnny Au: Do you see what I'm saying? Dr. Universe (talk) 03:07, 8 September 2020 (UTC)
- Somebody will do it or not. People are pretty sick of this COVID-19 s**t I doubt people are thrilled to be updating these pages. CaffeinAddict (talk) 05:35, 8 September 2020 (UTC)
- I hope so, especially with the second wave occurring very hard, breaking previous provincial records. Johnny Au (talk/contributions) 14:03, 8 September 2020 (UTC)
- It's being updated once more, albeit very slowly and intermittently, as well as unscheduled, as there are no deadlines to worry about, and the pandemic is far from over (this pandemic is not trivial though and must be heeded seriously). Johnny Au (talk/contributions) 00:57, 14 December 2020 (UTC)

Reply tool
The Reply tool has been available as a Beta Feature at the Arabic, Dutch, French and Hungarian Wikipedias since 31 March 2020. The first analysis showed positive results.
- More than 300 editors used the Reply tool at these four Wikipedias. They posted more than 7,400 replies during the study period.
- Of the people who posted a comment with the Reply tool, about 70 percent of them used the tool multiple times. About 60 percent of them used it on multiple days.
- Comments from Wikipedia editors are generally positive. One said in Arabic, ('aetaqid 'ana al'adat taqadam fayidat malhuzat; fahi takhtasir alwaqt litaqdim radi bdlana min altanaqul bialfarat 'iilaa waslat taedil alqism 'aw alsifhati, alty takun baeidatan ean altaeliq al'akhir fi alghalibi, wayasilu almusahim lisunduq altaedil bsret biastikhdam al'adati.) ("I think the tool has a significant impact; it saves time to reply while the classic way is to move with a mouse to the Edit link to edit the section or the page which is generally far away from the comment, and the user reaches to the edit box so quickly to use the Reply tool.")Source
The Editing team released the Reply tool as a Beta Feature at eight other Wikipedias in early August 2020. Those Wikipedias are in the Chinese (Mandarin), Czech, Georgian, Serbian, Sorani Kurdish, Swedish, Catalan, and Korean languages. If you would like to use the Reply tool at your preferred wiki, please contact Whatamidoing (WMF) here.
The Reply tool is still in active development. Per request from the Dutch Wikipedia and other editors, you will be able to customize the edit summary. (The default edit summary is "Reply".) A "ping" feature is available in the Reply tool's visual editing mode. This feature searches for usernames. Per request from the Arabic Wikipedia, each wiki will be able to set its own preferred symbol for pinging editors. Per request from editors at the Japanese and Hungarian Wikipedias, each wiki can define a preferred signature prefix in the page MediaWiki:Discussiontools-signature-prefix. For example, some languages omit spaces before signatures. Other communities want to add a dash or a non-breaking space.
New requirements for user signatures
- The new requirements for custom user signatures began on 6 July 2020. If you try to create a custom signature that does not meet the requirements, you will get an error message.
- Existing custom signatures that do not meet the new requirements will be unaffected temporarily. Eventually, all custom signatures will need to meet the new requirements. You can check your signature and see lists of active editors whose custom signatures need to be corrected. Volunteers have been contacting editors who need to change their custom signatures. If you need to change your custom signature, then please read the help page for guidelines.
Next: New discussion tool
Next, the team will be working on a tool for quickly and easily starting a new discussion section to a talk page. To follow the development of this new tool, please put the New Discussion Tool project page on your watchlist.

Reply tool
The Reply tool is available at most other Wikipedias.
- The Reply tool has been deployed as an opt-out preference to all editors at the Arabic, Czech, and Hungarian Wikipedias.
- It is also available as a Beta Feature at almost all Wikipedias except for the English, Russian, and German-language Wikipedias. If it is not available at your Wikipedia edition (excluding the English, Russian, or the German Wikipedias), you can request it by following these simple instructions.
Research notes:
- As of January 2021, more than 3,500 editors have used the Reply tool to post about 70,000 comments.
- There is preliminary data from the Arabic, Czech, and Hungarian Wikipedia on the Reply tool. Junior Contributors who use the Reply tool are more likely to publish the comments that they start writing than those who use full-page wikitext editing.[2]
- The Editing and Parsing teams have significantly reduced the number of edits that affect other parts of the page. About 0.3 percent of edits did this during the last month.[3] Some of the remaining changes are automatic corrections for Special:LintErrors.
- A large A/B test will start soon.[4] This is part of the process to offer the Reply tool to everyone. During this test, half of all editors at 24 Wikipedias (excluding the English Wikipedia) will have the Reply tool automatically enabled, and half will not. Editors at those Wikipedias can still turn it on or off for their own accounts in Special:Preferences.
New discussion tool
The new tool for starting new discussions (new sections) will join the Discussion tools in Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-betafeatures at the end of January. You can try the tool for yourself.[5] You can leave feedback in this thread or on the talk page.
Next: Notifications
During Talk pages consultation 2019, editors said that it should be easier to know about new activity in conversations they are interested in. The Notifications project is just beginning. What would help you become aware of new comments? What's working with the current system? Which pages at your wiki should the team look at? Please post your advice at mw:Talk:Talk pages project/Notifications.
COVID-19 pandemic in Ottawa
Hi Johnny, it looks like I need some help regarding the new article that is created. The new article is titled COVID-19 pandemic in Ottawa. The article is about the ongoing pandemic that is focused on Canada's capital city of Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. I know you did edit the article COVID-19 pandemic in Toronto. If you have time for some help go to the article titled COVID-19 pandemic in Ottawa and made some edits and the style of the article will be the same for Ottawa's sister article COVID-19 pandemic in Toronto. I hope you will make edits, I am currently making some edits on the Ottawa-related article. I hope you will too. Thanks, Johnny, talk to you soon. Steam5 (talk) 08:45, 13 March 2021 (UTC)
- You can also contact CaffeinAddict if he can help with the COVID-19 pandemic in Ottawa page. Johnny Au (talk/contributions) 17:19, 13 March 2021 (UTC)
- It definitely needs filling out. I never really thought it was necessary because cases have been relatively low, but it is our nation's capital after all. I was trying to do some research on notability when it comes to these things. Of course, there's no real precedent. CaffeinAddict (talk) 18:20, 13 March 2021 (UTC)
- Thanks and no doubt about that. Ottawa is also Ontario's second-most populous city and metropolitan region, though it has fewer people than Peel Region, which has its own pandemic article as well. Johnny Au (talk/contributions) 00:26, 17 March 2021 (UTC)
- It's looking great now. Thanks for the effort. We could create the COVID-19 pandemic in York Region article next. York Region is becoming another hotspot (and is among the most populous census divisions in Ontario, given that like Peel Region, York Region is a suburban regional municipality in the Greater Toronto Area) and I would like to see that article created. Johnny Au (talk/contributions) 00:15, 1 April 2021 (UTC)
- The COVID-19 in York Region article has been created, I made some edits to it, and I have the article linked in various navigation templates. Johnny Au (talk/contributions) 01:07, 23 January 2022 (UTC)

FAR for Toronto Raptors
I have nominated Toronto Raptors for a featured article review here. Please join the discussion on whether this article meets featured article criteria. Articles are typically reviewed for two weeks. If substantial concerns are not addressed during the review period, the article will be moved to the Featured Article Removal Candidates list for a further period, where editors may declare "Keep" or "Delist" the article's featured status. The instructions for the review process are here. Hog Farm Talk 05:21, 1 May 2021 (UTC)
- I will take a good look at that. Johnny Au (talk/contributions) 16:45, 1 May 2021 (UTC)
- I have pinged more of the regular contributors to the Toronto Raptors article for input as I am obviously not the only person working on the article nor am I the one who made the article featured in the first place. Wikipedia is the work of many contributors, not just one individual contributor. Johnny Au (talk/contributions) 00:14, 6 May 2021 (UTC)
- The article is being cleaned up by the regulars whom I pinged, mainly Leventio. Kudos to Leventio who has done an amazing job cleaning up and expanding the article. Johnny Au (talk/contributions) 00:52, 9 May 2021 (UTC)
- At least the article is being improved, albeit rather slowly, but well within schedule, which is a slight exception to WP:DEADLINE, as there's actually a deadline for FAR, being several months since being nominated for FAR. Johnny Au (talk/contributions) 00:48, 13 July 2021 (UTC)
- The article is now delisted, which makes it a former featured article and has been demoted to B class given numerous major updates (to the team itself and, subsequently, the article) and lack of maintenance that have caused the article to lose its status, including the Raptors winning their first NBA championship in 2019, which attracted many edits, despite it being semi-protected indefinitely due to frequent vandalism from both Raptors fans and fans of teams that play against the Raptors, especially the latter fandom for obvious reasons.
