Vandalism fighting tip

Sometimes more than one edit of vandalism is made consecutively, so make sure you revert ALL the vandalism, and not just one edit. Cheers —Floria L 08:20, 13 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

I usually do, but I script revert first as it removes all vandalism 99.5% ± 0.25 of the time. It might also help to revert after the vandal has been blocked (as you are likely to have some breathing space), which reduces the chance of the dreaded edit conflict. However it's OK if we have different strategies. MER-C 08:59, 13 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

Kira Jordan/Niki Leinso

Why are you deleting what im saying on the discussion page? Why is no-one lsitening to me here? All im asking anyone to do is to spend 30 seconds looking at a page that shows that 2 pages should be deleted!

Instead of dismissing what I put as mere vandalism, why dont you TAKE THIRTY SECONDS TO ACTUALLY READ WHAT HAS BEEN STATED! These artists have never released record in their lives, the whole things is a hoax!

LOOK: http://www.discogs.com/forums/topic?topic_id=112312

Why are you deleting what I put in the discussion pages for these individuals? I provide clear evidence that these pages should be removed and you dismiss it out of hand? The only person guilty of vandalism here is the person who wrote the original articles. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 172.159.189.57 (talkcontribs)

It's a discussion forum. Take what you read with a truckload of salt. And the article seems plausible. The only thing in question is notability, which I have addressed. MER-C 12:11, 13 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

With a truckload of salt???? Firstly, it concerns me that youve never heard of discogs.com - it is NOT merely a discussion forum, it is the internets premier music database site. Secondly he author of that post is a moderator on that site (as am I) who did a helluva a lot of research into what was going on up to and including travelling to the supposed place where the label was based. Trust me on this, is a elaborate hoax spread over a number of websites - to achieve what I dont know. But all you have to do is look at the google results - some information ABOUT these supposed release but nowhere to lsiten to them, nowhere to buy them and no third-party references to them except those created by the hoaxers themselves. 172.159.189.57 17:48, 13 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

AfD - Prizm Project

I just wanted to let you know at your AfD you make a reference to the number of Google hits. This is a violation of WP:GHITS, and is discriminatory towards whether the article should or should not stay on Wikipedia. Cool BlueLight my Fire! 12:24, 15 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

The google test here shows how difficult it is to find non-trivial sources for the article in question. Putting {{unref}} on the article won't solve the problem, as per above. It needs more wider input than that. The topic is not highly specialised and I'd expect an organisation who has done notable things to have a wider google presence. And of course, I am prejudiced against the existence of articles on non-notable subjects. MER-C 12:51, 15 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

Hey MER-C, you need to notify the author of an article such as Children's Brain Tumor Foundation that you tag (correctly) for speedy delete as a copyright vio, by using the templates given to you at the bottom of the pink speedy delete tag on the article itself. I have done it in this care, but please take care to do so in the future. Even if in some cases it wouldn't make any difference (as the author won't care) it shoul dbe done for those cases where the author will go back and re-write the article. user pages

I thought that Wiki user pages were the user's own personal space. Why would mine be deleted? —Preceding unsigned comment added by A*star actress (talkcontribs) 18:11, April 16, 2007 (UTC)

Your user page is not yours. Wikipedia is not myspace and/or a free web host, and we have ways to stop people using it as such. Deletion is one of them. MER-C 05:26, 17 April 2007 (UTC)Reply
Well, there's no denying that my user page contains information; it's just not in the standard article form. And MySpace is just a pathetic and desperate call for attention that no one wants to give. —Preceding unsigned comment added by A*star actress (talkcontribs)

Well, I red it, and I cannot find any reason why the things posted on my user page cannot be there. Spammers

I realise now why they're showing up less often - the captcha that appears whenever IP editors add external links is able to fool XRumer so far (even though it claims to be able to bypass captchas. Hehe.) But that means these nonsense pages might be harder to catch without using recent changes or special:newpages, since the don't have external links any more. Resurgent insurgent 2007-04-17 12:05Z

It will be a little bit easier for me to decide whether to block the spammer IP if you give the link to the spammed page in your user talk warnings. In other words, {{subst:spam4im|spam page name}}, not {{subst:spam4im}}. Thanks! Resurgent insurgent 2007-04-17 13:53Z

Your edits to Jim Dobson

In response to an OTRS ticket (#2007041710009994), I had a look at the history of Jim Dobson. After a back-and-forth with a few other registered users, an anon replaced the existing article (including text that was both unsourced and derogatory) with the word "Deleted" [1], but you reverted the anon's changes [2] and replaced the inappropriate text. Vanispamcruftisement

I agree with your recent prod of Guttersnipes, but it seems to me that listing the reason as Vanispamcruftisement would be a little intimidating to new-comers. I've been on here a few months and still had to look it up. Perhaps you could leave a message at the article's or creator's talk page explaining the prod. Sancho 06:17, 19 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

Wikipedia has nothing to lose by biting self-promoters and/or people who use it as a social networking site. I don't see any sufficient reason to waste the time, and neither does Wikipedia's former lawyer (see [3]). See also WT:BP#Blocks_for_Conflict_of_interest-only_accounts, where consensus is growing that vanispamcruftisers who do not contribute constructively may be blocked indefinitely. I had no intention of using Wikipedia for self-promotion, simply to contribute an article about the history of the band Guttersnipes. Hello There :) - From a Whim

Hello there :)

I noticed you prodded the article of "From a Whim", and after reading thoroughly through the "things you shouldn't do" I came to realize that I did trespass over one of those things, but I thought it would be O.K. to make the article because the band just got signed to a record label (Oh ya, I should mention this isn't the Lamoni in the band, he let me use his account due to the fact I don't have an email, I'm Ryan, nice to meet you :)). Anyways, if there's anything I need to improve on, could you please list it?

Thank You

Ryan C.

If your band is notable - see WP:MUSIC for what we deem to be notable - someone (not me) will eventually write an article compliant with our content policies on it. You shouldn't, because Wikipedia is not myspace and/or a forum for self-promotion and writing about yourself is strongly discouraged.
In the meantime, you can write about something else that interests you that's not on the Wikipedia:List of bad article ideas. Here are several lists of ideas. MER-C 06:24, 20 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

"Chicken filets Sadi Carnot – while it would be a bit unusual if the father of thermodynamics had a dish named after him, it is far more likely that chef Charles Ranhofer had Marie François Sadi Carnot (1837–1894) in mind, not his uncle, the physicist Nicolas Léonard Sadi Carnot (1796–1832). However, the nephew was named after the uncle, who was named after a medieval Persian philosopher. The younger Sadi-Carnot was a civil engineer, politician, and government minister who rose to become a popular French president (1887–1894) noted for his integrity. His only crisis in office was the de Lesseps Panama Canal scandal. He was assassinated by an Italian anarchist in 1894." If I was allowed to edit the article. The nature of Wikipedia means that you can't make a convincing argument based on what other articles do or don't exist; because there's nothing stopping anyone from creating any article. Plenty of articles exist that probably shouldn't, a lot of articles don't exist that probably should. So just pointing out that an article on a similar subject exists doesn't prove that the article in question should also exist. You should change your username at Wikipedia:Changing username. Usernames that contain a domain or imply a web address or that promote a company, are not allowed as usernames and eventually the account will be disabled. see Inappropriate usernames.--Hu12 23:02, 27 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

Rapleaf article

Hi. You put a Template:COI2 tag on Rapleaf, which I mostly wrote -- I turned it from a complete stub into a short article. I think you're pointing to another editor, not me, as having a POV issue.

If you have a chance, could you help me out on this? I'm a little unclear on the POV concept as it relates to business owners making factual corrections. But more than that I'd like to clean the article up to the point where there's no POV issue. What do I have to do? The guy's changes seem accurate so I don't want to just undo them.         alert("The page has already been deleted.");
        return;
      }

That way, if there is no revision (the only way I can think of is if there is no such page) an alert is fired and the page is not auto saved. What do you think about it? -- lucasbfr talk 11:21, 2 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

I'll try it tonight. MER-C 11:40, 2 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

nanoquest deletion

Hi, You gave me a warning for putting a spam link in the Nanoquest entry. Nanoquest is an Irish government funded resource for raising awarenesss of nanotechnology among children. IF there was an issue about the way in which i wrote the piece, please let me know and i'll make changes. Thanks Discover Science & Engineering 15:32, 2 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

The problem with the article was what I like to call vanispamcruftisement. Wikipedia is not an advertising service, nor is it for self-promotion. Iff the program is notable, someone will eventually write about it. You shouldn't. MER-C 11:37, 3 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

  Thanks for the userpage and talkpage revert. Appreciated :) – Riana 13:17, 3 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

Image:Munsell-system.svg‎

Hey there. You just put a speedy delete tag on my image Image:Munsell-system.svg‎ (which I had nominated on FPC), and then closed out the nomination. The reason given was that the image was corrupt. If that was the reason for closing out the nomination, could you please undo that, as the image is just fine, and renders perfectly well on its image page, the FPC page, and on the article page? (It's not my fault that Mediawiki's svg rasterizer is rather crappy, and flakes out intermittently) Also, it would be proper (i.e. not incredibly rude and inconsiderate) to instead of just putting up a speedy delete, you would actually notify the author of the image in question. Thanks. --jacobolus (t) 10:36, 4 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

Oh, and please respond at my talk page. If I don't get a response, I'm going to stick the image back on FPC, as there didn't seem to be any clear consensus (only 2-3 people even replied to the candidacy). --jacobolus (t) 10:39, 4 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

Okay, thanks for the response. That clears things up. :) --jacobolus (t) 11:08, 4 May 2007 (UTC)Reply
