Request for Assistance: Quentin Elias article

I require a semi-protect status for the article on artist Quentin Elias. It appears that someone close to the artist (manger?) is vandalizing the page and removing referenced material. It happens everyday! I have placed a request for third opinion to start a dispute resolution.--XLR8TION (talk) 18:20, 18 June 2009 (UTC)

Possibly need administrator assistance

I may need some admin action in the future on an incivil vandal: user:Doodoobear1856. I think the name gives away that he's not here to contribute constructively, and his response to my note about his vandalism was not encouraging. If he replies again in the same manner, I'll let you know so you can block him for a vandalism only account and incivility. bahamut0013wordsdeeds 06:50, 19 June 2009 (UTC)

OK, the second one was worse, despite the warnings. Go for it. bahamut0013wordsdeeds 15:32, 19 June 2009 (UTC)
Thank you sir. I imagine he might create a sock or continue as an anon, and if necessary, I will call on your services again. I find it such a shame that there are young Marines who desire to behave in such a juveneile way. God bless, Tony! bahamut0013wordsdeeds 04:47, 20 June 2009 (UTC)
That didn't take long: User:Doodoobear1857 got hit with a block for his username, but I think if you tagged it as a sock, it would make sure nobody unblocks him. If he makes another, we should open a sock investigation and get the IP blocked. Happy Father's Day, BTW, jefe. bahamut0013wordsdeeds 04:45, 23 June 2009 (UTC)

Removal of Ancestry

Tony, editor Threeafterthree has been removing the ancestry of many Puerto Rican and Dominicans from their articles. I find this a bit racist. Please see articles on Roger Sanchez, Lynda Baquero, and Micaela Nevarez. Can you help out here? --XLR8TION (talk) 18:05, 19 June 2009 (UTC)

Please stop with the racist comment, that doesn't help. Anyways, --Tom (talk) 18:17, 19 June 2009 (UTC)
    • If the shoe fits.... anyway until the editor I have asked for assistance replies, I would back off from any more edits. Editor is well verse on such articles and on site's policies. He has won numerous awards and honors for his work. I would give him the benefit of the doubt and wait for him to give his opinion. I won't argue with you anymore. Let him come with a compromise.--XLR8TION (talk) 18:20, 19 June 2009 (UTC)
Very funny :). When I mention about having this discussion a year or two ago, it might have been with this user, not sure. I try to have no memory when it come to editing and editors. Anyways, please accept that this is not personal or racist. I am happy to remove ethnicity from the lead of any group. Cheers! --Tom (talk) 18:25, 19 June 2009 (UTC)
  • No Tom, I don't think that we have interacted before, but who knows I could be wrong. The norm now in Wikipedia is that the person's nationality or citizenship (in accordance to where he/she was born; hence American, Puerto Rican, Dominican and so on) be mentioned in the subjects article introduction and not their ethnicity (African-American; Polish-American and so on).

1. In the cases of Roger Sanchez, Lynda Baquero, they were both born in the United States, therefore the proper thing would be to mention them as "Americans" of either Dominican or Puerto Rican descent in the intro. and mention that their parents were from so and so place within the article. This does not keep them from being added to the "Lists", of "Puerto Ricans" or "Dominicans" because the rules in regard to the "lists" indicate that people of so and so descent can be listed there.

2. In the case of Micaela Nevarez, she was born in Puerto Rico and therefore in the intro. she can be listed as a Puerto Rican since "Puerto Rican" is a nationality and not an ethnicity, recognized by the Supreme Court.

I know that we may not all agree to this, but those are the rules. Tony the Marine (talk) 19:08, 19 June 2009 (UTC)

    • Tom, what do you think? I feel that a subject's heritage should be incorporated into the biography if references can be provided. Hispanic-Americans are extremely happy of their roots, even if they were born in the USA. Same goes when it comes to such groups as Italian-Americans, German-Americans, etc.--XLR8TION (talk) 19:14, 19 June 2009 (UTC)
Absolutely include heritage in the article, just not in the lead sentence unless it is why they are notable. Most people, not just Hispanic-Americans, are proud of their roots, anyways, --Tom (talk) 19:17, 19 June 2009 (UTC)
(e/c) Ethnicity should not be included in the lead per WP:MOSBIO unless it has to do with their notability. So descent should not be in the lead unless it is why they are notable. Correct? I do agree that a person born in Puerto Rico should have that in their lead. Anyways--Tom (talk) 19:15, 19 June 2009 (UTC) ps, maybe we need more input? --Tom (talk) 19:19, 19 June 2009 (UTC)

Good! It is agreed that "ethnicity" will not be mentioned in the intro. even though it can be mentioned within the article. It is great when a discussion can be settled in a civil level-headed manner as you both have done. If any of you ever need my advice please do not hesitate to ask. Tony the Marine (talk) 19:26, 19 June 2009 (UTC)

Agreed. Also, if a person holds dual citizenship, that is fine in the lead as long as it is sourced. Going forward, if I make any edits to lead sentences of bios that you disagree with, please feel free to drop me a note so we can work it out amicably. Cheers again, --Tom (talk) 19:35, 19 June 2009 (UTC)

Congrats

Thanks, I got the Commandant of the Marine Corps also. The Sergeant Major of the Marine Corps is also up for review as is the MOH lists for African Americans and Jewish Americans. I Those should get voted on in the next couple weeks. Have a happy fathers day.--Kumioko (talk) 23:56, 20 June 2009 (UTC)

Hex Hector

Regarding hex, do I have to place the link in the list? I placed it in the article. I also spoke to him (he is a friend on Facebook) and I confirmed the facts. He is half Puerto Rican, half Cuban and most bios mention the PR ancestry only.Let me know and I will take care of it ASAP!--XLR8TION (talk) 06:01, 21 June 2009 (UTC)

Schatz

If Schatz is Thomas Rivera's maternal surname, isn't listing him under "Rivera Schatz, Thomas" more correct than "Schatz, Thomas Rivera"? Not that it really matters... Pr4ever (talk) 11:26, 23 June 2009 (UTC)

Hans Hertell

I need your feedback on an edit war regarding this article. The opposing party says that Puerto Rico can't sign agreements with other nations, which is not true as Fortuno just signed an economic/tourism agreement with the Dominican Republic. Hertell helped Sila Calderon signed a similar agreement with the DR regarding illegal migration. It appeared in a print edition of El Nuevo Dia that I no longer have. Can you help remedy this situation on the article discussion page?--XLR8TION (talk) 16:45, 25 June 2009 (UTC)

The June 4 agreement between President Fernández and Governor Fortuño was signed in Aguadilla in the presence of the United States Chargé D'Affaires Ad Interim in the Dominican Republic (the US "acting ambassador) after being consulted with the U.S. State Department, according to an interview on Radio Isla with Secretary of State MacClintock. Thus, it is not proof that PR is free to enter into international agreements freely. Pr4ever (talk) 00:57, 5 July 2009 (UTC)

Thanks

Thanks I'll take a look. Also, if your interested I just got the Commandant of the Marine Corps and the Sergeant Major of the Marine Corps articles to Featured list status. I will be submitting the Assistant Commandant of the Marine Corps and the Marine Corps Brevet Medal soon.--Kumioko (talk) 22:02, 1 July 2009 (UTC)

Medusa: Dare To Be Truthful

Is there anyway to put a protection on this article? An anonymous user keeps destroying it with entries that contain pointless info and bad grammar. His edits are highly unconstructive. Two other editors have reverted his edits but as an anoynmous editor who is apparently not too fluent in English nor Wikipedia's article style, he is causing the three of us to revert the article constantly--XLR8TION (talk) 22:45, 2 July 2009 (UTC)

Response

No, I'm in a lot of stress. I don't know if you are busy, but if possible, can you please take care on the nomination? A message was left in my talk page some time ago, but I have been gone for a while and really don't have time to do anything with it right now. I apologize if that sounds selfish. - Caribbean~H.Q. 00:18, 4 July 2009 (UTC)

I'm getting ready to get my first professional license, which is proving to be an annoyance due to the revalida. Anyways, I'm planning to move back home in a few months, probably September, to enroll at the Recinto de Ciencias Medicas of the UPR. In the meanwhile, I will try to keep a few articles updated and clean, but that will most likely be limited to the boxing pages. That's about it in a nutshell. Have the POV-pushers been behaving themselves in my absence? Regards, - Caribbean~H.Q. 02:02, 19 July 2009 (UTC)
It will be a long journey, in my field a baccalaureate takes five years to complete "the traditional way", I intend to challenge a few classes if possible. You have a terrific detective ability, you figured the whole flag issue before anyone else. By the way, I recently heard that some moron tried to open a country-wide issue by pushing the "dark variety" flag as the official version. Also, some guy with an evident conflict of interest keeps pasting a out-of-place gallery and redundant information to Tito Trinidad's page. I removed it and explained it in my edit summary since that is a good article, yet he already reverted me twice ignoring my explanation. He is hellbent and clearly associated to the boxer that he keeps promoting in Trinidad's article, it as simple as looking at his user page, but I'm not going to edit war. Thus, can you remove this nonsense for me? I prefer to conserve my third revert in case that he actually begins edit warring. - Caribbean~H.Q. 05:27, 19 July 2009 (UTC)

Possible move of Nazi plunder

I have started a discussion on possibly moving Nazi plunder. As you are currently a reasonably active editor, as well as a past contributor to the article, I hope you can find some time to make comments at renaming Nazi plunder. Unschool 17:46, 4 July 2009 (UTC)

That's life I guess. I was unaware that you were not part of the discussion process for the article being on the mainpage; I had spotted it and assumed you were the one who suggested the article for a July 4th appearance. Had I known that you did not know about this I would have endeavored to leave you a message of the decision. TomStar81 (Talk) 04:41, 5 July 2009 (UTC)
Congradulations Tony thats awesome. --Kumioko (talk) 04:43, 5 July 2009 (UTC)
One last thing: Thanks. For serving the nation. For allowing me and others like me to enjoy the songs and fireworks and other festivities of our Independence Day. Its due in no small part to men like yourself, who served the States to protect the freedom of those in the states. Its an important and often overlooked part of our national celebrations on Memorial Day, Independence Day, and Veterans Day. Even though this fact is paraded in our country daily I feel that it falls on deaf ears, and at times I feel like I am the only one to remember that these holidays are only possible because of the sacrifices men like yourself have made. So I pen this message to thanks for allowing me to enjoy a 4th of July celebration, and God will thanks for many more to come. TomStar81 (Talk) 05:49, 5 July 2009 (UTC)
  • Yes, I do remember all the problems we had, so I was particularly gratified to see it on the main page, and on July 4. A triumph! Regards, —Mattisse (Talk) 18:58, 5 July 2009 (UTC)

Assistant Commandant of the Marine Corps

I wanted to let you know that I submitted the Assistant Commandant of the Marine Corps article for FLC. If you happen to get some time please feel free to check it out and let me know if you have any comments. I admit the references are a little lean but hopefully it will do ok. Not much reference material out there for the Assisants. I know you don't really care about the whole Good or featured article thing but I wanted to let you know since they are USMC related. Also, I already got the Commandant of the Marine Corps and Sergeant Major of the Marine Corps (with help from others) as well as several of the Medal of Honor recipients lists to FL status. I am working on the List of Presidents, List of Vice Presidents, List of Secnavs and Marine Corps Brevet Medal recipients now so you should see them in FLC in the next few weeks also.--Kumioko (talk) 04:38, 5 July 2009 (UTC)

Ernesto Cordero

Hola Tony! I've added an article on classical composer/guitarist Ernesto Cordero. I had to write it under Cordero Ernesto because there is a Mexican politician with the same name. I don't know how to shift the name-last name order. I've also added him to the List of Famous Puerto Ricans. Ayuda! Saludos. Nonza (talk) 14:55, 8 July 2009 (UTC)

Editorial: How to prepare an A-Class Review

Perhaps the most important—and, indeed, most respected—aspect of the Military History project is our rigorous A-Class Review (ACR) system, which puts articles through the most robust review outside of WP:FAC. Although reviewing might seem daunting to newcomers, this article will give you an outline of three popular reviewing methods so you can actually start contributing yourself.

  1. General nit-pick - this is one of the easiest - and one of the most common - reviewing styles seen throughout Wikipedia. It is a similar approach to that you would see in proofreading and classroom marking. Basically, it is a general overview of the article, not getting too specific on aspects of the prose. The most common statements include This article could benefit from a light copyedit before going to FAC or You might want to check the endash and emdash placement in the article. It's a style that is incredibly easy to manage, and one that requires little-to-no experience in previous reviewing.
  2. Specialization - it often is the case that those who have been reviewing articles for a long time will move away from the general review towards more specific areas of articles. As an example, Tony usually stays within the realm of prose and copyediting while reviewing Featured Article Candidates, Tom used to focus almost entirely on external links and disambiguations, while others specialize their focus exclusively on copyediting, reference formatting, dashes, punctuation and flow, image licensing, and a host of other areas. This is a review method that is not nearly as time-consuming as other methods, as it allows you to quickly scan an article, spot the things that you work on, and how they need to be fixed.
  3. Sectional - My preferred style of reviewing, this is one of the most informative styles. Unfortunately, it is also one of the most time-consuming and exhaustive styles. Essentially, it involves going through the entire article, section by section, and pointing out every major (and often many of the minor) flaws present within each section. Everything from prose to reference formatting to content. It is a reviewing style that is exhausting, and often takes two or three goes through the article to get everything (sometimes even more), but it gives the article's main contributors two benefits. First, everything is well organized, mostly under section headers like this one, and it often makes finding individual sentences or refs much easier, as they are within that section. Secondly, it points out a lot of the problems from a lot of the areas.

Best of luck, and happy Reviewing! Cam (Chat)

RE:

Distinguido Señor, Historiador de la isla de Boriquen, ¿Como estas Tony? Thanks for dropping by, I been busy (You know, the always send the Puerto Rican away to fix things that the gringo broke). What new article you have for me? This week is the Sotomayor hearing. Think about it, the US Supreme Court has define the rights of Puerto Rico. The Supreme Court time and time again has told us that we are second class citizen, from Isabel Gonzalez case to recently denying the rights to isleños to vote to president, for the Supreme Court we are nada. Now enters Sotomayor, a puertorican from the Bronx, her father didn't even speak English, an immigrant force by Muñoz and his master plan of mass immigration of the poor.I just think Sotomayor story its amazing (maybe I'm making a big deal out of it). Talking about Muñoz, I'm still mad at him, he had el jibaro under his arm, he was the one that could have declare Puerto Rico independence, he could have made la independencia something of a household name, mainstream, but he was blown away by the American system, he was blown away by the american dream como un pendejo. I think el riquito hijo de Papa Procer could not handle the attacks of the 1950s.La revolucion no iba con el espiritu de bohemio o sus manos a la obras, quizas Muñoz era bipolar, o quizas una prostituta barata. But I stop, quien soy yo para criticar a Muñoz, el que llevo el progreso al fanguito?

My historian, keep doing your work and narrating the story about our great people. Maybe someday in the island of el vacilon los jovenes will read your articles, and maybe deep in the mountains of Las Marias o quizas Adjuntas, maybe someday we can hear echoes from the 1511, Lares and Utuado. Y Betances no estara triste.

Quedo de usted, --Jmundo 20:42, 14 July 2009 (UTC)

OH, Tony, dont write any more about Muñoz, I imagine him sad and melancolico in his last moments, please dont write the truth, dont tell me that the same Muñoz, the one that gave the speech about the flag and el ELA. "Rescatamos esta bandera para todos" was the one that wanted the nacionalista quiet and quieto. I was reading las Tribulaciones de Joana de Jose Luis Gonzalez, he said that Muñoz told him that the Puerto Rican in the US by the second genenation would not be Puerto Rican , but his was wrong, we Puerto Rican in exile we still Puerto Rican. i went to la isla del vacilon to see my grandmother die. Been in the hospital in the island, you are reminded that we are third world country, Puerto Rico is not mainstream America. Puerto Rico is latin American, culpa de los vagancia Española. Que viva la siesta! I walk into the emergency room in Santurce, Tony it was like a nightmare, people en camillas in the hallway, el aire acondicianodao no funcionaba, y las enfermeras estaban en break. But Puerto Rico es un vacilon y un tapon, people are happy an unemployed. Agueybana is far, far away, Betances is just mural en la UPR. La estadidad is not coming any time soon. Esta en lista de espera.

Dont worry, how may people have the article Juan Alejo de Arizmendi in their watchlist? Right now, Im not editing, Im still enjoying El Don Q bottles that I bought in the San Juan airport. Puerto Rico es un vacilon. this engineer from el Colegio de Mayaguez is drunk, because his grandmother died. Did you that 42270 gallons went to waste last week in the city and that the supervising engineer went missing, I for the first time didnt care. Officially taking a leave of absence for a month. Tony , I confess I am puerto rican living the american dream. but also dreaming about Agueybana, also running the streets of Jayuya and listening to Blanca Canales. Please write more, about Puerto Ricans fighting in World War II, Purto Rican working for NASA, puerto Ricans being the best, of the best. keep the spirit of Agueybana alive, he in the front of the line, easy target of el arquebuz, keep the spirtit alive, tell me something about Muñoz, tell me something about Albizu, but please dont be quiet, tell me anything that keep me believing in our island. --J.Mundo (talk) 18:49, 15 July 2009 (UTC) [http://images.google.com/hosted/life/l?q=luis+munoz+marin+washington&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dluis%2Bmunoz%2Bmarin%2Bwashington%26ndsp%3D18%26hl%3Den%26sa%3DN%26start%3D108%26um%3D1&imgurl=6edf4cafdf632cee

Weird page

Hey Tony, can you take a look at this page: President's Task Force on Puerto Rico's Status. I ran across it recently and wanted to do some work on it (which I have just begun). The weird thing about it, is that it doesn't seem to be able to be linked to- which is why I didn't bother to wikilink it just now. If you type it into the search field, you aren't taken directly to it, instead provided with the usual offer to create the page accompanied by a list of possible alternatives in case it exists. Right at the top of that list- the very same article with the very same wording and capitalization! I'm perplexed- I am hoping you can use your admin magic to fix it. By the way, has any link been established between Mattei's role in attracting the American invasion and the selection of Guánica Bay, a part of Mattei's Yauco at the time, for General Miles' disembarkment? Tony for the last three months unregistered users editing the article for singer Maxwell (musician) have been changing his ancestry. If that doesn't qualify, I'm at a loss (and wondering why those other names make the cut.) —Preceding unsigned comment added by Andrew Y. Mousley (talkcontribs) 11:00, 2 August 2009 (UTC)

A Corsican from Barrio Indio, I exchanged emails with him on Caribbean history several years ago it turns out he was USAF not marine now that I found a Wiki bio for him.

Cofresi

My interpretation of Cofresi is that the reason he revolted against the Spaniards is that he had purchased a cargo in Santo Domingo and the crown put import duties on it because in the interval of sailing the prior colony had become independent with the assistance of Colombia. Rather than accept having to pay a duty on goods that were Spanish when he bought them he felt that the Colombians might be able to support a similar independence of Puerto Rico. The Colombians were issuing letters of marque to privateers and in his opinion he was one.

Hila Levy

In this edit you say "moved Hila Levy to Hila Levy (Rhodes scholar): There are more then one Hila Levy's". Well, as it happens, it's over a year since you created the article, and she is still the only notable Hila Levy.
Also, being awarded a Rhodes Scholarship is not, in and of itself, sufficient to justify notability. (However "Hila Levy (First Puerto Rican awarded a Rhodes Scholarship)" is a bit of a mouthful!!)
And, of course, one would expect, (or at least I would), that in a decade or two she will be notable for more than being the first Puerto Rican to be awarded a Rhodes Scholarship ...
Your thoughts? Cheers, Pdfpdf (talk) 01:58, 4 August 2009 (UTC)

Hello Pdfpdf, thank you for mentioning your concern in my tlak page. Thanks to you I found out that soemone blanked and created a redirect page of Hila Levy which is intended to be a disambiguation page. I fixed it. The reason for the disambiguation is that there are two people with the exact same name even if one does not have an article. Hila Levy, made history when she became the first Puerto Rican to be awarded a Rhodes scholarship and has been featured in various newspaper articles as such. Being the first among her people does make her notable. Happy editing Tony the Marine (talk) 02:18, 4 August 2009 (UTC)
Hi Tony! Thanks for your quick reply, and I'm glad that something I did was useful/helpful, (even if that wasn't my primary intention!)
Sadly, as I often find to be the case with typed-over-the-internet-communication, I didn't successfully communicate my intent to you.
(I'm still a strong believer in face-to-face communication.)
You've explained the disambiguation page need quite well, and I agree.
Regarding notability, if you re-read my post, you'll see that I completely agree that Hila's achievement, and Hila, are "notable". That wasn't my point.
My point is, Hila is not notable because she is a Rhodes scholar. (She's notable because she is the first Puerto Rican ... ). So, I'm not altogether sure that "Hila Levy (Rhodes scholar)" is a good name for her page, and I AM fairly sure that it is NOT the BEST name for her page.
What I am not sure about is, what IS the best name for her page.
As I said, "Hila Levy (First Puerto Rican awarded a Rhodes Scholarship)" is a bit of a mouthful!!
Hence, my question "Your thoughts?" was about a better name for her page.
I hope that's a bit clearer. Best wishes, Pdfpdf (talk) 12:18, 6 August 2009 (UTC)

Betances

Tuyo, Betances

Interesante no? Todavia estoy en casi-wiki break, viajo a Puerto Rico pronto. Cuidese mi hermano, --J.Mundo (talk) 23:40, 5 August 2009 (UTC)

List of Puerto Ricans

Sorry, didn't know about that rule, I hadn't visited that article since way back. I decided to leave Santos P. Amadeo, since his role in legal history in Puerto Rico assures his notability, added a ref, hope that is sufficient to met the established criteria, let me know if it doesn't.

Also I removed Baudilio Vega Berríos and Charles Henry Juliá Barreras since those 2 articles are still in there infancy, I plan to expand them along the way. I added a reference to the Miguel A. García Méndez sentence about the post office. Anyway thanks for the heads up. Hope you are well.

editnotice

I think you missed my remark on Talk:List of notable United States Marines‎ about possibly using template:editnotice there. If you aren't aware, it required an admin to implement in articlespace. I think it may come in handy in a few different articles, specifically lists. bahamut0013wordsdeeds 08:10, 6 August 2009 (UTC)

See, I think I would have to tweak it several times before it was just right. I don't think our schedules match up all that well, and it could very well look half-assed for a period of time while we work out the kinks back and forth. I think I'll invite ERcheck, he's got a pretty good grasp of the coding and such, and I'm sure he can handle it. bahamut0013wordsdeeds 09:17, 6 August 2009 (UTC)
Take a look at User:ERcheck/Sandbox5, and if you don't have any changes to make, we can post it to the talk page for final comments. bahamut0013wordsdeeds 04:57, 10 August 2009 (UTC)

Flags...

"Flags of Puerto Rico", one single article- Pr4ever (talk) 04:42, 7 August 2009 (UTC)

"Flags of Puerto Rico", one single article, in fact this would also make it consistent with articles on flags of other nationalities. However I would also suggest some editing - a leading paragraph, a note on symbolism and a note on its design before entering into its history. Saludos.- Nonza (talk) 13:33, 7 August 2009 (UTC)

Flags of Puerto Rico

I would revert back to the original title as it covers various historical and municipal flags pertaining to the island. I would add a wikilink to any article on the official flag so that the reader can read more about that subject should they not want to focus on island flags.--XLR8TION (talk) 18:56, 7 August 2009 (UTC)

Chatter

This "Rob" user seems to like nitpicking a lot, breaking the article apart would be a crime, we should not disregard the work of others, our work, just because one user complaints about technicalities. On a different subject, It seems that while I was away Wikipedia developed a Beta for a new version, are you familiar with the changes that they are trying to push? - Caribbean~H.Q. 00:56, 8 August 2009 (UTC)
