WikiCup 2010 October newsletter

The 2010 WikiCup is over! It has been a long journey, but what has been achieved is impressive: combined, participants have produced over seventy featured articles, over five hundred good articles, over fifty featured lists, over one thousand one hundred "did you know" entries, in addition to various other pieces of recognised content. A full list (which has yet to be updated to reflect the scores in the final round) can be found here. Perhaps more importantly, we have our winner! The 2010 WikiCup champion is Sturmvogel_66 (submissions), with an unbelievable 4220 points in the final round. Second place goes to TonyTheTiger (submissions), with 2260, and third to Casliber (submissions), with 560. Congratulations to our other four finalists – White Shadows (submissions), William S. Saturn (submissions), Staxringold (submissions) and ThinkBlue (submissions). Also, congratulations to Sasata (submissions), who withdrew from the competition with an impressive 2685 points earlier in this round.

Prizes will also be going to those who claimed the most points for different types of content in a single round. It was decided that the prizes would be awarded for those with the highest in a round, rather than overall, so that the finalists did not have an unfair advantage. Winning the featured article prize is Casliber (submissions), for five featured articles in round 4. Winning the good article prize is Sturmvogel_66 (submissions), for eighty-one good articles in round 5. Winning the featured list prize is Staxringold (submissions), for six featured lists in round 1. Winning the picture and sound award is Jujutacular (submissions), for four featured pictures in round 3. Winning the topic award is Sturmvogel_66 (submissions), for forty-seven articles in various good topics in round 5. Winning the "did you know" award is TonyTheTiger (submissions), for over one hundred did you knows is round 5. Finally, winning the in the news award is Candlewicke (submissions), for nineteen articles in the news in round three.

The WikiCup has faced criticism in the last month – hopefully, we will take something positive from it and create a better contest for next year. Like Wikipedia itself, the Cup is a work in progress, and ideas for how it should work are more than welcome on the WikiCup talk page and on the scoring talk page. Also, people are more than welcome to sign up for next year's competition on the signup page. Well done and thank you to everyone involved – the Cup has been a pleasure to run, and we, as judges, have been proud to be a part of it. We hope that next year, however the Cup is working, and whoever is running it, it will be back, stronger and more popular than ever. Until then, goodbye and happy editing! Article of the month – 2008 Hungarian Grand Prix, currently undergoing WP:PR The 2008 Hungarian Grand Prix (formally the XXIII ING Magyar Nagydíj) was a Formula One motor race held on August 3, 2008, at Hungaroring in Mogyoród, near Budapest, Hungary. It was the 11th race of the 2008 Formula One season. Contested over 70 laps, the race was won by Heikki Kovalainen for the McLaren team, from a second position start. Timo Glock finished second in a Toyota car, with Kimi Räikkönen third in a Ferrari. It was Kovalainen's first Formula One victory, which made him the sport's 100th driver to win a World Championship race, and was Glock's first podium finish. The majority of the race was dominated by a duel between Lewis Hamilton and Felipe Massa, who drove for McLaren and Ferrari respectively. Hamilton started from pole position on the starting grid but was beaten at the first corner by Massa, who passed him around the outside. The two championship rivals began a battle for the lead that was resolved when Hamilton sustained a punctured tyre just over half-way through the race, giving Massa a comfortable lead. The Ferrari's engine, however, failed with three laps of the race remaining, allowing Kovalainen to win. (More...)

Listen to "Episode 26"

Flywheel, Shyster, and Flywheel is a situation comedy radio show starring two of the Marx Brothers, Groucho and Chico, and written primarily by Nat Perrin and Arthur Sheekman. It was broadcast in the United States on the Blue Network between November 28, 1932, and May 22, 1933. Episodes were initially broadcast live from NBC's WJZ station in New York City, then later from Radio Pictures in Los Angeles, California, before returning to WJZ for the final episodes. The series depicts the misadventures of a small law firm, with Groucho as attorney Waldorf T. Flywheel and Chico as Flywheel's assistant, Emmanuel Ravelli. Many of the episodes' plots were drawn from the Marx Brothers' films. The show garnered respectable ratings for its early-evening time-slot though it did not return for a second season. The episodes were thought not to have been recorded, as was usual at the time, although the scripts were stored in the Library of Congress. In 1988, 25 of the 26 scripts were rediscovered and published, and a complete recording of the final episode was later found. Adaptations of the recovered scripts were performed before modern audiences and broadcast in the United Kingdom on BBC Radio 4 in 1990. (more...)

Off-topic responses to FLRC/Rihanna discography

Hi, Matthew. I don't want to further pollute the page at WP:Featured list removal candidates/Rihanna discography/archive1, but I had a couple of things to say in response to your recent edit:

1. Thanks for the Toolserver link showing how I totally dominate the non-blocked editors on Rihanna discography. Man, that's depressing. I estimate that (until his block) at least 40% of my edits there and 70% of my time on that article were follow-ups, citation additions and completions, and just plain reversions of the user above me there. It's still my 3rd-most-frequently edited page, and it's behind two other Rihanna articles. You see, I'm not even a fan, I just got sucked in to article maintenance and crossed paths with Iluvrihanna24. Oh, I'm getting that nauseated feeling again.
2. Just FYI, there's nothing better or more correct about "SUI" compared with "SWI" for Switzerland. There is guidance (somewhere) on WP telling us to use an abbreviation of the usual English name, so "SWI" would actually be better. Where the column heading sizes have been cranked way down, though, "SWI" and the oft-nearby "SWE" can be impossible to differentiate. Correct for Swizerland is "CHE", from Confoederatio Helvetica, the Latin compromise for a country with four national languages. Unfortunately, I expect relatively few people outside of Europe know what "CHE" is, and even the Swiss generally use just "CH".

Spot-checking, I think the Dutch chart positions for the singles are not in line with the source. In particular, it lists some singles as having charted which aren't listed in the source. That also seems to be the case in the European chart column. Are you sure you'd rather have it go to FLRC? --JN466 22:42, 29 November 2010 (UTC)

Possibly. If the Dutch and European ones are wrong, it's likely others may be. Also, I noticed that all the music videos, DVDs and stuff have been incorrectly copy-pasta'ed to another page, Girls Aloud videography. Matthewedwards :  Chat  02:25, 30 November 2010 (UTC)
