This article is speculative at best. Wikipedia is not a crystal ball and I'm not convinced this article is necessary as yet. I am going to delete the "upcoming national competitions" for all those without dates... but this article has major problems, needs sourcing, and is fairly dubious. PageantUpdater User Talk Review me! 21:38, 14 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

I don't think so Pageant Updater. This page is quite useful. Though the 2007 pageant is currently being held, but I think since there are already 4 national delegates elected, a page should be created.

names

edit

The Chinese Miss Universe is Wei, Ziya, written here as Ziya Wei. Zi Ya Wei is not the correct naming convention for Chinese names. Although her name in Chinese characters are probably not needed. Hanfresco 08:34, 31 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

27th August 2007

It has been reported on globalbeauties.com that Doan Thi Kim Hong, Chairwoman of CIAT Advertisement Company, Miss Universe Organisation’s Vietnamese partner, stated that she has recieved an official letter from the President of the Miss Unvierse Organization Paula Mary Shugart asking for Vietnam to be the host nation for the 2008 pageant. The invitation has been accepted and the pageant will take place in Nha Trang, the capital city of the Khanh Hoa district. This is however subject to the building of a 7,500 seater stadium in Nha Trang as well as the pledge of US$7million for Miss Universe copyrights required by the Miss Universe Organisation. It does seem however that these infastructures and necessities will be met on the confirmation of the Minister of Culture and Tourism Hoang Tuan Anh and the pledge for sponsorship and funding will be met by a number of Business' and Organizations.

Rioy Mori, Miss Unvierse 2007 is still campaigning for the Miss Unvierse organization to change it's mind and have the pageant be held in Japan, whilst Grenada, Spain has also placed an official bid.

Please see http://www.missosology.org/forum for full details. I think though that it is safe to change this information and list Nha Trang as the host city for Miss Universe 2008. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Latinapussycatdoll (talkcontribs) 18:47, August 27, 2007 (UTC)

Contestants???

edit

Why do you remove Ghana, Kenya, and Trinidad & Tobago in the Miss Universe 2008 list??? Does it mean that they lost their franchises towards the Miss Universe Org.??? When will some of the countries return to the pageant??? I don't think that Miss Universe is the best pageant ever in the world...because Miss World and Miss Earth have exceeded a number of delegates by 86.

Who does not compete as Miss Universe Pageant 2008

Many country do not complete as Miss Universe Pageant long years. They will return to the pageant?

The information of the union of franchises in Chile is old!

edit

In the section "no shows" someone is affirming that in Chile the franchises will join, for the choice of Miss Chile Universe 2009. This news is of February, 2008 and nowadays our franchise doesn't have owner, as reported the web www.chileancharm.com. What happens now is not clear yet. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Loudspeaker (talkcontribs) 16:25, 10 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

Because you can't put wikilinks or other links into hidden messages. I guess I could just put the url in... PageantUpdater talkcontribs 03:08, 29 May 2008 (UTC)Reply
Who decided that the example url I gave above fails SPS and RS? If it does fail, then doesn't that also apply to anything that comes from pageant organisers?Kaiwhakahaere (talk) 03:58, 29 May 2008 (UTC)Reply
I warn you to assume good faith and read the relevant policies. On the verge of assuming bad faith myself, I think there appeares to be a possible a conflict of interest issue here as well. Read the policy: "self-published books, newsletters, personal websites, open wikis, blogs, forum postings, and similar sources are largely not acceptable". Futhermore, I cannot find any evidence that work from this site has been published in reliable third party publications. Looks pretty cut and dried to me. Regardless, we can get a third party in to comment if you wish. PageantUpdater talkcontribs 04:14, 29 May 2008 (UTC)Reply
Don't be so insufferably arrogant. You warn me to assume good faith and then say you think there appears to be a COI here. I have never had any connection with any beauty pageant anywhere, at any time, in any fashion. What about you? And as for your quaint self publishing policy, a press release from one of your approved pageant organisers is dutifully published by the lazy media and instantly becomes a reliable source according to you, yet an accurate report on a reliable website is not accepted by you. Pathetic. Kaiwhakahaere (talk) 09:57, 31 May 2008 (UTC)Reply
For the record, I too have never had any connection with any beauty pageant at any time. As for the rest of your comments, I am referring this discussion and more specifically the issue of references in this article (in relation to your questions) to a third party. Cheers. PageantUpdater talkcontribs 10:12, 31 May 2008 (UTC)Reply
I am the person to whom this discussion was referred. Looking at the two sources named on my talk page (Global Beauties and MissContest, I note that MissContest is a blog, and therefore is not to be used as a source. As for Global Beauties, I don't see anything to indicate it is not a reliable source, but I still wouldn't advocate using it. seresin ( ¡? ) 03:44, 1 June 2008 (UTC)Reply
Global Beauties IS a reliable source, PageantUpdater is biased with their nonsense telling that it is innacurate, present proves then I'll believe you. Global Beauties had the complete list of contestants and nations to Miss Universe 2008 and they reported everything, people added the information to the article in Wikipedia and PageantUpdater removed it. Now the Miss Universe 2008 website opened and everything that Global Beauties reported was true and it proved that the website is reliable and can be used to verify information. I hope Pageant Updater stop his arrogance and nonsense bias against the website which had been online for the past 11 years and used as a source in many newspapers around the world. 67.224.159.172 (talk) 22:09, 10 June 2008 (UTC)Reply
Warnning -- please refrain from making personal attacks on other editors. GB has been wrong in the past and there was no reason to believe it was reliable this time around. Just because we realise now that it was in fact correct, there was no way to verify its accuracy until the official MUO website was updated. To ensure that the verifiability policy was adhered to, it was best to reference using only official websites and third-party news sources. PageantUpdater talkcontribs 07:32, 11 June 2008 (UTC)Reply
First of all, use a dictionary because it is "Warning" not "Warnning", and second you prove even more that you are biased against the website, find a source to prove that Global Beauties had been wrong in the past, CITATION PLEASE, then I'll believe you, and good luck with that because you won't find anything, on the contrary you can find third party sources using GB as a REFERENCE. See the history of the article and count the many times that users added information from GB, and that means that users trust the website and find it reliable, YOU are the only one that have a problem with it. In the meantime you are merely speculating, and better warn yourself because all information you entered and removed information to this article in Wikipedia turned out to be unreliable. 64.237.214.5 (talk) 14:59, 11 June 2008 (UTC)Reply
Please read Wikipedia's policies. WP:VERIFY states that the threshold for inclusion is verifiability not truth. As the information I added was verified by reliable sources, my edits were according to policy. Please assume good faith and be civil. If you decide to continue editing at Wikipedia, I suggest you read the policies relating to both content and relations with other editors. PageantUpdater talkcontribs 09:08, 12 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

Regarding references

edit
Clarifying the point where input is requested, here is the text of the RfC:
  • 3 questions -- Is the current hidden comment regarding references appropriate? Is the current standard of referencing (in regards to what constitutes reliable sources) appropriate? What is people's opinion of this discussion?
The section where you can add your comments is Talk:Miss Universe 2008#And why, also? EdJohnston (talk) 14:08, 7 June 2008 (UTC)Reply
Thanks, I couldn't get it to work, didn't know what I was doing wrong with the syntax and didn't get any replies when I asked for help at the talk page ;)... thanks for fixing for me :) PageantUpdater talkcontribs 20:34, 7 June 2008 (UTC)Reply
  • Most sources here seem to be self-published. Since this is an article on Miss Universe 2008, the web-site of the contest organizers, would be acceptable for non-controversial claims. Of course, newspapers or other sources with editorial review should be the first choice. If no such source is found, then try the official websites. And if the desired information isn't there either, then discuss it here on the talk page. If there is no real reason to dispute the information, solid looking pageant fan-sites and even blogs are certainly better than nothing at all. However, self-published sources is the last resort and should only be used for non-contentious information when that information can not be sourced to anything else. Thanks, Merzul (talk) 12:13, 15 June 2008 (UTC)Reply
  • Agree that felf-published is ok for non-controvertial things, although i think blogs are still too low on the trustworthiness scale. The extensive and long-term established sites are ok. If it is contested, a 3rd party RS is essential.
There is no hidden comment (?). Shouldn't disputed changes be stopped during the RfC? If i knew what it said, i would comment. If it just emphasises the sources policy, i see nothing wrong with that.
Ah, found it above. Stating certain sources are not reliable requires talk page consensus at least. Policy says "largely unacceptable", so it is in some cases allowed. Proposing editors should also state on the talk page why these self-published sites are ok in each caseYobmod (talk) 09:24, 30 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

Miss Vietnam

The representative from Vietnam, Nguyen Thuy Lam, is 1,72m/5'8 tall and 20 years old (Her birthday is 10/9/1987) according to the official Miss Universe Vietnam website: http://hoahauhoanvuvn.com/?tabid=45&ctl=2&itemid=2049 And not 1,70m/5'7 and 21 years old. Please change. Thank you. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 87.123.255.59 (talk) 18:54, 1 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

  • As a Vietnamese, I've read many Vietnamese press about this pageant and Nguyen Thuy Lam (her born name is Nguyen Thuy Trang) was sorry the people because her real height is only 1.69 and her measurements were also incorrect (breasts and hips are smaller and bigger waist)...And as I can see that mostly Vietnamese people dislike her and maybe she has bought the crown before.Angelo De La Paz (talk) 11:37, 12 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

Current event template

edit

Just to make it clear, since I think there is room for improvement in communication regarding this article, there is no need for a Current Event template on here as yet. Its use is not so much to show that an event is happening now, but to "warn the editor or reader about the great flux of edits and the fast-changing state of the article" (WP:CAFET). It may be necessary to put it up the day of the pageant, but for now there is no need for it. PageantUpdater talkcontribs 01:55, 18 June 2008 (UTC) It is true that the official measurements of Miss Vietnam are incorrect on this website. Miss Kosovo

The source from the official site of Miss Universe represents Miss Kosovo from Kosovo, not Kosovo-Serbia, I think we should avoid politics of host country to destroy the non-political beauty event. Check the source in here [1]--Digitalpaper (talk) 21:49, 13 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

It also says that Vietnam doesn't support Kosovo's independence and probably won't let Miss Kosovo compete, but--oh look--earlier in the article, it says that Miss Kosovo is competing. *headdesk* 4.225.234.155 (talk) 22:39, 13 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

"Controversy"

edit

I don't think this point qualifies as "controversy":

Miss Egypt Yara Naoum was accused of slapping the reigning Miss Universe Riyo Mori across her face in response to Riyo accidentally stepping on her dress in the backstage area at the preliminaries.

It does not strike me as relevant to the article about the Miss Universe pageant, nor does it have a reference. I will be removing it.
