Civil rights template

Thank you very much for your additions of Belafonte, Levison, and William Anderson (who I had never heard of). Believe it or not, I went to the template to add Belafonte (the new film reminded me of him, and I realized he wasn't on the template) and there he was! I'd added the template to his page, and added it to Levison's and Anderson's. The last addition, the Deacons, seemed not to fit the template, which is about the movement itself, which was totally a nonviolent movement - a tactic and technique which assured its success. Can we talk about that addition, and do you feel strongly about it? And thanks for the change in the historians section, well done. I've been adding to and more or less guarding the template for a long time now, and am glad to have someone else add such obvious entries as Belafonte and Levison which I'd (not very wisely) missed. Wow, what a fantastic analysis and surely potential additions. I think Dexter Ave. Church is already on the template, and I hadn't realized wikipedia had a page on Clarence Jones - he surely needs to be on it. Most of the others can be added with fewer words. You organized and posted that very quickly and efficiently. Would you mind if I added in some of the material, or do you want to do much of it? John Doar and Burke Marshall, for sure. On a wider scope, as you said, to capture it all would require various templates, but how about keep the sections as they are now and maybe add links to other templates such as "Civil rights movement songs" (which I've thought of adding to the template), and "Court rulings", and, as you mention, reaction from governmental officials (Eisenhower, Kennedy, etc.). In that way the template would still contain the main people and organizations and events, but take some of the burdens to other links. It shouldn't be much larger. You've given a good deal to chew on, and it seems plausible while still keeping most of the direc-link data on the one template. Randy Kryn 03:41, 4 March 2013 (UTC)

Thanks for all the good research and now the book listings. The movement prior to 1955, when Claudette Colvin wouldn't get off the bus in Montgomery (and Rose Parks waited nine months to do the same thing - mother of the crm indeed! When I met Colvin I immediately called her the "Mother of the Civil Rights Movement - Myles Horton is the "father" if anyone deserves that title). So the real changes happened between 1960 and 1966, seven short years in which an age-old decision pattern was turned on its head. Of course things occurred before this, but the term "Movement" has, imnho, a specific meaning which picks up with the 1960 sit-ins, the '61 Freedom Rides, etc. People actually did the Gandhi thing of putting themselves nonviolently on the line so that other people could vent their anger and fear at them - the necessary healing points of a real movement. Jeez, I can talk of these things for hours. Your initial suggestions really expand the template, and if it's okay with you I'll try to fit them in with brief wording, and then, when everythings in place, the look-at dividing it up into specifics (although people who want to study the movement can just take a few days to read every article. If you are in a working mood, Dorothy Cotton's page is stublike, and she's too important to be a stub (though she probably doesn't mind). Randy Kryn 13:22, 6 March 2013 (UTC)

Civil rights template

Hi, and thanks for the suggestion of looking through the King archives. With all the new activity leading up to the 50th anniversary of the Selma marches there is a lot to catch up on. And just this week I realized that two of the very active people were not listed on the template, Marion Barry and Walter Fauntroy. If you'd like to add to an article I've just started a little bit on in my sandbox, on Frederick Reese, a pretty important activist in the Selma movement, feel free to bulk it up a little. The few sentences I have up now contain some inaccuracy, so I was just starting it. Awhile ago I combined some sections of the template, which made it a bit shorter. Good to "see" you again. Hi, and good entry at the Clinton template. I've moved it to a new Popular culture section, as the book section is for books Clinton himself wrote (or had ghost-written). There must be more films which feature the fellow. Have you had a look at the Civil Rights Movement template lately? @Randy Kryn: Thanks for the article. I wasn't aware of it. Considering that there are thousands of school districts (not including private schools), there are no doubt alot of federal and state legal cases that are isolated on Wikipedia or not in existence. I'll add this case and the others listed in Category:United States school desegregation case law to the School integration in the United States in Related court cases section.

On another topic, I'm trying to compile a list of sit-ins that occurred after the Greensboro sit-ins on February 1, 1960 until the end of 1961. If you come across any articles connected to this event, then please let me know.

Besides the successful Nashville sit-in the only 1960-61 listed on the sit-in page is the Friendship Nine in North Carolina. The Nashville group was already well organized and doing preliminary work when Greensboro occurred, so its pre-planning and expansion helped to achieve its goals. I like that 1868 school case, it really jumps out in the era and predates so much later law. Randy Kryn 13:21, 5 January 2017 (UTC)

Opposition to U.S. involvement in the Vietnam War

1. removed second occurrence of (African-American) 'Civil Rights Movement' in the same sentence (the first occurrence is an item in a list of movements, 'African-American Civil Rights Movement' is title case

1. changed 'Chicago' to 'Chicano'—the 'Chicano movement did participate in the movement, 'Chicago' was not a movement that participated, likely a typo—could have been from multiple revisions of the lede ( I think I made have had a go at rewriting the lede)
2. 'American Civil rights movement required a dab fix to African-American Civil Rights Movement, and to title case.

It's an important article—lots more fixes and additions needed. Most of all I liked your removal of the globalize template. I've tried to have it removed for three or so times for exactly the reason you gave. Yeah, I know there was an world wide movement against that war, but the movement within the superpower waging that war necessarily calls for an article and, as you say, this article is focused on opposition to participation in that war. And the global movement against U.S. participation requires an article. Question on Civil Rights Movement wikilink changes

I noticed that you've been going through Wikipedia changing hundreds of wikilinks which link directly to African-American Civil Rights Movement (1954–68) so that they now link instead to Civil Rights Movement. May I ask your reasoning for this? The issue is that Civil Rights Movement then redirects back to African-American Civil Rights Movement (1954–68), meaning you've changed direct linkage in articles to a redirect. If I missed a consensus on Wikipedia to make this change, or a good reason why you're doing it, do let me know. Thanks for responding. --SouthernNights (talk) 23:07, 31 March 2017 (UTC)

As a follow-up, one reason I'm asking about all this is because I'm familiar with the discussion around the requested move last year of African-American Civil Rights Movement (1954–68) → African-American Civil Rights Movement. However, consensus was not reached in that discussion. The edits you're making could be seen by some editors as a back-door way of making that change without consensus. @SouthernNights: The wikilinks are already redirects that were changed to a different variation of African-American Civil Rights Movement (1954–68). For example, the links you provided are redirects, not a direct link. There have been over a dozen of these variations created since the article was created by making minor changes with hyphens or changing the date range. It was most recently moved on 9 December 2016‎.

I'm making changes to the terms as part of a larger effort to improve the CRM topic throughout wikipedia. I'm a regular editor on CRM related articles. Virtually all of the articles connected to the CRM are in horrible shape. Major events are entirely missing from Wikipedia. Visit some of the articles connected to CRM and you'll see my edits. Visit my sandbox pages User:Mitchumch/sandbox, User:Mitchumch/Topical perspective, and User:Mitchumch/Movement templates#Civil Rights Movement as proof of my sincerity.

As far as back-door, all of my edit summaries state what I am doing, virtually all of the articles I performed changes to were redirects, and alot of the articles did not use the title "African-American Civil Rights Movement (1954–1968)" or "African-American Civil Rights Movement". Alot of them used American Civil Rights Movement and Civil Rights Movement as the preferred term. I've also used "civil rights movement", "American civil rights movement", and "American Civil Rights Movement". There are over a dozen different terms used to denote the CRM. First off, let me say I've known of your edits on Civil Rights articles for years and you do great work. It's important to have dedicated editors focused on this often neglected Wikipedia topic. As for the redirects, almost all of the articles you changed indeed used CRM as shorthand but directly linked to African-American Civil Rights Movement (1954–68). Yes, that article's name was changed to African-American Civil Rights Movement (1954–1968) but you aren't redirecting to the renamed article, you're changing the link to Civil Rights Movement, which then requires a redirect. Why not simply correct the links to African-American Civil Rights Movement (1954–1968) instead of introducing a redirect into the linkage?--SouthernNights (talk) 12:59, 1 April 2017 (UTC)

We're nearly averaging one move per year of these variations. If I change it to the current variation, then it is reasonable to assume that title variation will likely be changed again. Makes sense to me. I wasn't aware the title had changed that often, which speaks toward the need for a change to Civil Rights Movement for the title. Mitchumch, thank you for your civil note on my talk page; I think that your maintenance of the civil rights articles is great, and if you had left your edit to this one to just changing the wikilink, there would have been no reversion. It serves a legitimate purpose. In addition, removal of an image that is listed as having limitations on its use (a non-free image) is consistent with a stated policy. On the other hand, your change to the image (you think it's "too wide") appears to be a matter of your personal preference (i.e., it was "too wide") rather than that it violates policy. I'm not going to ask anyone on their talk page what their personal tastes are when it comes to visual presentation in an article, and I don't expect that you would ask me that question on my talk page either. Basically, where there are illustrations in the pages in this particular category (some haven't reached that point) there's a consistency to the way they are placed. I would prefer not to get into an editing war; if I change the display, I will see to it that your changes to wikilinks remain untouched. Mandsford 21:35, 7 June 2017 (UTC)

Barone is a leading writer on American politics and political history--his "Almanac" covers political history of every state. His comments deal not with what Grant did but how some 21st century writers are dealing with Grant's memory. It puts in context the authors Wiki editors are using. BPM template

I just saw the deletion decision of the Black Power template and think that its a loss to Wikipedia. That's a fine template, and shows the nature of some decisions here where editors who may have been in favor of keeping it, and have good points to make, don't learn of the discussion. Randy Kryn It was a "starter" template. I should've placed it in a sandbox instead of placing it in active space. I have a more expansive BPM template in my sandbox. ArbCom 2017 election voter message

Hello, Mitchumch. Voting in the 2017 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23.59 on Sunday, 10 December. All users who registered an account before Saturday, 28 October 2017, made at least 150 mainspace edits before Wednesday, 1 November 2017 and are not currently blocked are eligible to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

Ohio Wikimedians User Group: January 2018 newsletter

A happy new year to you! It's been a while since an update has been sent out to the Ohio Wikimedians User Group. Below you'll find a recap of what's been going on over the last few months, including annual reports and offline events.

General Updates

Information:

• Phase 1 of the Wikimedia Movement strategy has concluded, and so far over 80 organized group have given their endorsement. If interested, please take a look at our User Group's talk page for more information, and to lend your support or opposition to the Ohio Wikimedians User Group endorsing the strategic direction by January 20th.
• The Ohio Wikimedians User Group's Annual Report for July 2016 - July 2017 has been released, viewable here. The report provides a summary and list of events, with event pages providing more details respectively.
• Wikipedia Connection's annual report for the 2016-17 academic year has also been released, viewable here. The report provides an overall summary, stats, acknowledgements, list and details of events, and more.
• The #1Lib1Ref campaign is taking place from January 15 - February 3 this year! The goal of the campaign is to get librarians to add just one reference to Wikipedia. This is a great opportunity to outreach to local librarians you may know. See the event page for more information.

Recap:

• Back in July, Ohio hosted its 2017 Wiknic at the Ohio State University. Four Wikipedians from Columbus were in attendance.
• Back in October, Wikipedia Connection members Emery and Jon joined an edit-a-thon at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health labs in Cincinnati. It was a great success, with Wikipedians working with NIOSH scientists to improve Wikipedia's coverage of topics such as 3D Printing, Dustiness, and Nanotechnology. A shout-out to Emery and Jon from Wikipedia Connection for attending the event, and a special thanks to John Sadowski and everyone else at NIOSH who made this event possible.
• Wikimania 2017 took place August 9 to 13 in Montreal, Canada, with WikiConference North America 2017 taking place as a pre-conference to Wikimania. Kevin Payravi and Emery were in attendence, both representing the Ohio Wikimedians User Group, with Emery also representing Wikipedia Connection. During WikiConference North America, Kevin and Emery presented Wikipedia Organizations on Campus: Case Study and Guide.
• Wiki Loves Monuments 2017 in the United States has come to a close. Over 1,400 individuals uploaded more than 8,000 photos of historic sites to the Wikimedia Commons. Of these photos, over 150 of them were of historic sites in Ohio. You can browse the Ohio photos here. A thank you to all who participated and helped improve coverage of Ohio!

Ohio Wikimedians User Group: March 2018 newsletter

General Updates

• WikiConference North America 2018 is coming to Columbus, Ohio! Organized by the WikiConference North America user group and hosted by the Ohio State University Libraries, this conference will take place from October 18 - 21, and will feature exciting activities such as tech demos, a Culture Crawl, edit-a-thons, presentations, discussions, and more.

It would be fantastic to have Ohio Wikimedians User Group members help out with the conference as it nears. The conference is in the early planning stages as the conference works to secure grant funds and partnerships. Ohio Wikimedians User Group organizer SuperHamster (Kevin Payravi) is one of the organizers of the event; if you would like to help out with the conference, or have any ideas for the conference (partnerships, sponsorship opportunities, etc.), please feel free to reach out to him! As the event nears, the conference will need more hands as well as volunteers to help out at the event itself - stay tuned for more information on that.

• March is the month for Art+Feminism! There is currently one Art+Feminism event scheduled in Cincinnati, hosted by LOOK on Saturday, March 17. See more details and RSVP on the Facebook event page.

Ohio Wikimedians: Net Neutrality statement

A proposal has been made for the Ohio Wikimedians User Group to release a statement in support of net neutrality, amid similar statements of support from the Wikimedia Foundation and other U.S. affiliates. Ohio Wikimedians User Group: May 2018 newsletter

General Updates

• Based on our recent discussion, the Ohio Wikimedians User Group has its first resolution in support of Net Neutrality.
  • On a related note, a proposal on the Village Pump has been created about having a banner in support of Net Neutrality displayed for Wikipedia users in the United States. If you have thoughts on this proposal, you may add your comments here.
• The Art+Feminism campaign took place in March and April, and Ohio saw two Art+Feminism edit-a-thons take place! A Cincinatti edit-a-thon was hosted by LOOK, and a Columbus edit-a-thon was hosted by Wikipedia Connection at the Ohio State University. Great job to all attendees and organizers!
• Stay tuned for volunteer opportunities for WikiConference North America 2018, which is coming up in October in Columbus, Ohio! Stay up to date on the conference by joining the mailing list, liking the Facebook page, and following the Twitter handle.
• The 50,000 Challenge is currently 5.74% complete, with the goal of writing 50,000 articles on U.S. topics. If you're interested in writing Ohio-related articles, consider contributing as part of this event and recording your articles under Ohio!

WikiConference NA - Submissions + scholarship apps due

Hi there - apologies for the late notice, but I wanted to make sure Ohio Wikimedians are aware. Proposal submissions and scholarship applications for WikiConference North America 2018 (Oct 18-21 in Columbus) are due today (August 15). If you have any projects or ideas to share through a presentation, roundtable, etc., I encourage you to make a submission. If you would be traveling from out of Columbus to attend the conference and need funding for a hotel + transportation, $500 scholarships are being offered (apply here).

We have also started an accommodations and transportation guide for visitors here - if you have information and recommendations to add, I encourage you to edit the page.

I know some folks have expressed interest in helping out with the event. We'll have public information very soon for opportunities to help with logistics and sponsorship, as well as a sign-up form for volunteering to help out at the conference itself. List of African American United States Representatives

@Mitchumch, I'm not sure if you've noticed, but during the past few weeks an often-banned editor, using three different sock accounts (two of them IP addresses), has made wholesale changes to the above-referenced article. I informed the pertinent authorities of the first two sockpuppets that the editor used, and both were banned, but he now is using a third sock (which I've already reported). His most recent series of edits is ending the "fourth generation" of black congressmen in 2001 and starting a "fifth generation" at such time.

I don't know how you wish to go about rolling back unsourced and unnecessary changes to the article, so I haven't undone anything so far. AuH2ORepublican (talk) 23:30, 3 September 2018 (UTC)

WCNA 2018 - Registration Open!

Hello! Kevin from the Ohio Wikimedians and WikiConference North America here. As a quick reminder, WikiConference NA is happening Oct 18-21 at the Ohio State University Libraries. The schedule has been posted (more to come), and registration is open as well. If you'd like to attend, I encourage you to register as soon as possible - especially if you're interested in the pre-conference events, as they're filling up rather quickly. If you're on Facebook, we also have an attendees group for folks to coordinate travel, logistics, and ask questions. We also have a new volunteer coordinator, who is working on creating the on-boarding process for volunteers to help out at the event - you'll hear from me again when that's ready, if volunteering interests you. ArbCom 2018 election voter message

Hello, Mitchumch. Voting in the 2018 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23.59 on Sunday, 3 December. All users who registered an account before Sunday, 28 October 2018, made at least 150 mainspace edits before Thursday, 1 November 2018 and are not currently blocked are eligible to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

Hi, I'm RonBot, a script that checks new non-free file uploads. I have found that the subject image that you recently uploaded was more than 5% in excess of the Non-free content guideline size of 100,000 pixels. I have tagged the image for a standard reduction, which (for jpg/gif/png/svg files) normally happens within a day. Please check the reduced image, and make sure that the image is not excessively corrupted. Other files will be added to Category:Wikipedia non-free file size reduction requests for manual processing. There is a full seven-day period before the original oversized image will be hidden; during that time you might want to consider editing the original image yourself (perhaps an initial crop to allow a smaller reduction or none at all). A formula for the calculation of the desired size can be found at WP:Image resolution, along with instructions on how to tag the image in the rare cases that it requires an oversized image (typically about 0.2% of non-free uploads are tagged as necessarily oversized).
