CCI help request

(I posted this while you away, but it seems to have been archived before you saw it)

Despite having used the Internet archive extensively as part of CCI review I've had a couple stumbles recently. Little under the weather and maybe not thinking clearly, hoping I'm missing something simple but maybe you can point it out.

Here's the diff

A straightforward addition of a plot

When I put the diff ID into the Internet archive

I get a lot of overlap, but the overlap seems to have nothing to do with the specific diff. What am I missing?--S Philbrick(Talk) 15:15, 2 January 2021 (UTC)

Sphilbrick, Sorry, I saw that but I did nothing because I thought you and Hongqilim had figured it out. Looking at the articles history, there were a few copyvios from different users and different sources at the time; that edit appears to have come from http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2014-09-18/seiken-tsukai-no-world-break-anime-premieres-in-january/.78906 , according to this earwig report. It was removed as a copyvio here, and most of the other text in the article was later removed as a violation; see my revdel for context. I'm guessing the blogpost in a mirror of us and other websites. Moneytrees🏝️Talk🌴Help out at CCI! 00:02, 3 January 2021 (UTC)
Moneytrees, OK thanks. I have been happy with Hongqilim's cooperation, but this wasn't one I had worked with them on. S Philbrick(Talk) 00:50, 3 January 2021 (UTC)

Copyvios

Hello Moneytrees, I see you have blocked User:Idreeshussain123 for copyright violations. I have been examining their edits because of revision deletion requests for several articles such as 1992 Tajikistan protests, 2005 Togo protests and riots, 2010–2011 Togolese protests and 2018-19 Bosnian protests, and have come to the conclusion that these have not been copyvios of other sites but have copied text from other articles originating on Wikipedia, such as for example Protests against Faure Gnassingbé. So this editor's "offence" is failing to provide the correct attribution rather than actual copyright violation. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 09:56, 6 January 2021 (UTC)

Cwmhiraeth, I actually didn't make the block based off of the articles you cited, I based it on the 3 speedy delete notices they had received for 2007-2009 Yemen protests, 2018-19 Mongolia protests, and 2012-13 Togolese protests, which appeared to not be mirrors, and a violation I had just found on 2018-2019 Mongolian protests. Looking further through those articles though, 2012-13 Togolese protests was actually an unattributed copy of Protests against Faure Gnassingbé and not a violation, which is in line with this appearing to be a misunderstanding of CC licenses (the other articles were violations of a nc/nd article and a cc by sa 4 article). Since Idreeshussain123 is clearly here in good faith and the issues were just with tricky CC licenses I'll decrease the length of the block and try to help them understand how to attribute copies between pages and what licensed articles to avoid. Thank you for bringing this to my attention. Moneytrees🏝️Talk🌴Help out at CCI! 18:09, 6 January 2021 (UTC)

Lost Islamic History: Reclaiming Muslim Civilisation from the Past

Hi Moneytrees! I'm Incognipedia, Recently you deleted an article which I submitted as a draft named "Lost Islamic History: Reclaiming Muslim Civilisation from the Past". The article was about a book. You removed the article because it contained exact words from that book publisher's website which came under Wikipedia's Copyright Violation. I'm very new to Wikipedia and I did not know that it was a violation to add exact words from a website. Now i know that i should explain in my words. In my user's sanbox I have removed those words which i previously copied from that book publisher's website.

Now,

I want to resubmit that article. Can you please have a look at the article and tell me what should be my next appropriate step to submit that article as a draft. Thanks in Advance! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Incognipedia (talkcontribs) 11:44, 7 January 2021 (UTC)

(talk page watcher) Hi, Incognipedia, I'm BlackcurrantTea. I took a look at your sandbox. It sounds like an interesting book, but the draft isn't ready for submission yet. First, you need references to several reliable sources. Were there articles about the book, maybe in Dawn, The Guardian, or on the BBC's or Al-Jazeera's website? These reliable sources will show that the book is "notable" as Wikipedia uses the word. Any subject of a Wikipedia article should meet that standard.

Whilst you're looking for sources, remember that it's important that the article be written from a neutral point of view. If some critics thought the book was the best thing they'd read all year, and others weren't at all impressed with it, the article should mention both views (with references to those reliable sources, of course, in case our readers want to see the reviews for themselves).

All this may sound like quite a challenge, but once you get started, you'll find it soon gets easier (and it's fun!). If you have questions about editing, or any of those policies and guidelines I linked to, the Teahouse, our help forum for new editors, is always open. When you post on any talk page, whether it's here, the Teahouse, or an article's talk page, be sure to sign your posts with four tildes, like ~~~~. Happy editing! BlackcurrantTea (talk) 12:52, 7 January 2021 (UTC)

Hi BlackcurrantTea! Thank you for guiding me. I know that the article's very short as of now but i will be working on it to expand it. The reason i want it to be submitted for draft is because i recently learned that it takes months for an article to be reviewed. I was told by another user to submit the article for draft and in the meantime work on expanding and improving the article. That's why i wanted to submit it. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Incognipedia (talkcontribs) 13:17, 7 January 2021 (UTC)

Hi Moneytrees, I see that you had occasion to block the above for copyvio and non-attribution, I think there may be a CIR problem as they now seem to be creating article by translating other language wikipedia articles without any form of credit being given to those wikipedias. I have asked them through page curation twice in the last two days to attribute with no response (see their talk page 2018 Columbia article and 2020 Brazil article which appear to be copies from Spanish Wikipedia Article and Portuguese Wikipedia Article - Do you think anything more needs to be done? Joseywales1961, I wrote something out but on their talk page, it appears those weren't actually tls, they just used those as a general framework and the associated references. Moneytrees🏝️Talk🌴Help out at CCI! 00:39, 18 January 2021 (UTC)

Copyright/paraphrase issue

Hi Moneytrees, it has been suggested that you may be a good person to discuss possible copying of text issues with. Lê Thánh Tông has been nominated for FAC. A brief review led me to oppose. During this I checked two bits of text against the sources offered. One was a straight lift and the other had minimal paraphrasing. See Wikipedia:Featured article candidates/Lê Thánh Tông/archive1 for details. One cannot help but suspect that if one were to check further one may discover more of the same. I am sure there is some sort of procedure for this sort of issue, but I don't know what; and I tend to find even allegedly straight forward Wiki-systems bafflingly opaque. I would welcome advice or thoughts on what, if anything, I might do now. Thanks. Gog the Mild (talk) 16:56, 18 January 2021 (UTC)

Gog the Mild, This kind of academic/book copying is harder to detect, so if any examples are found a further investigation should be done, thank you for coming here. I don't think there's any official procedure, but coming to me (or someone else well versed in copyright) is the best course of action when there's only one violation found so far and more are suspected. If there's a case where you find more examples, like copying on 2+ articles, a good idea would be filing a case at contributor copyright investigations. Beyond Lê Thánh Tông, I found further instances of copying:

I couldn't access some sources but I don't doubt there's more. I'll probably open a CCI (if this ends up being a sock (as suspected at Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/NhatMinh1701 I'll have to add the other accounts edits as well), and I'll take dealing with these edits and whether or not to block from here. Requesting your Assistance on Block

Hello, My Account was Blocked due to my actions including Copyright Infringement, edit warring. I had uploaded various images from third-party sites without knowing the usage license. Now I am aware of the same and understand that using copyrighted images are seriously prohibited. Please help me get back my account as i feel the block is no longer necessary as I will abide by the rules of Wikipedia. Can you please assist me with the same . Eldhorajan92, You were also blocked for your non-image text copyright violations. In order to be unblocked, you will need to prove how you understand not to copy either images or text from sources. Simply copying text from some other wikipedia article and using it as your unblock request like last time won't work, you'll need indicate understanding of copyright in your own words. Proposal

I have a proposal.

I've been working on the Hongqilim CCI for Hongqilim.

It's my understanding that the editor is currently partially blocked until the CCI is resolved (they are permitted to contribute to the CCI). Most of the entries have been reviewed, many by you and quite a few by me.

There are a handful left which I think all fall into one category — the editor mistakenly but understandably copied some text from either promotional material deliberately written to promote the event or from media guides, which were designed to give information to the media for their use. While these technically qualify as copyright violations, I think it is fair to say that many people would presume that media guides and promotional material are free to use, so while incorrect it's not a case of an editor cavalierly ignoring copyright.

I'll also note that the editor has been extremely helpful in identifying information about edits for items that have not yet been reviewed.

In theory, the next step is to look at those articles where promotional/media guide information was incorporated, and either blow away those sections, or rewrite them. Our readers are best served with the second option, but that's more work. My proposal is to suggest that the editor has violated some of the rules but shows evidence that they understand the rules, so rather than wait until someone cleans up the handful of items remaining, I propose that the editor be unblocked with the provision that all or a substantial portion of their editing in the next few weeks be dedicated to rewriting those sections that were copied from promotional or media guide sources. I think this editor shows signs of being a great contributor in an area that could use more editors, if they fully understand the need to respect copyright, and we would be all better off if the editor or to agree to clean up the remaining items.

I'm deliberately not pinging in the editor at this time so you can share your thoughts openly, but I'll be happy to contact them if this proposal is worth considering.--S Philbrick(Talk) 20:44, 28 January 2021 (UTC)

Sphilbrick, I don't even really think any unblock conditions were necessary, I've also been impressed with Hongqilim contributions to the CCI and was open to unblocking them earlier but didn't because I didn't get an answer to my question to them about how to attribute in wiki copys, (See it at the bottom of this section) which I think Hongqilim just missed. But I think Hongqilim understands that and won't do it again and I agree they're better off editing mainspace so I'm personally fine with an unblock. Hongqilim CCI

I believe we are done with Wikipedia:Contributor copyright investigations/Hongqilim. every section has now been reviewed and closed. While I've worked on a number of CCI's, I'm not familiar with the final steps to close it out so I'm hoping that you can help here. While we have discussed this, I do want to acknowledge the generous help of Hongqilim. Protection for Clinton-Lewinsky scandal

Hello, i'm 36.68.184.231. I have question for you, because you as admin has protected Clinton-Lewinsky scandal. Why you make the article indefinite semi-protected but by pending-changes protected for 3 months, instead elsewhere invoking indefinite pending changes and 3 month semi-protection. I believe the protection is resonable to prevent vandalism but i see it was mistake to have indef semi but with PC for 3 months. 36.68.184.231 (talk) 01:41, 2 February 2021 (UTC)

Yeah, I forgot set the time when protecting, I just meant to apply it for a few hours to stop immediate vandalism before pending changes would take over. I re-set it to expire in 3 hours. Moneytrees🏝️Talk/CCI help 01:48, 2 February 2021 (UTC)

Sorry, I do not know what your problem is? Any info that is not otherwise easily available to the public from private sources is referenced to the Encyclopaedia. All my research is always fully referenced. Look up where I included a large number of sources on Article History: [1]

The entry has been this way for over four and a half years in this form and passed by all other editors. It is within the applicable Berne Copyright Convention.

I do not have time to deal with this. I am 83 and just recovering from Covid-19 and Long Covid.

Thank you all the same for taking an interest but if you research the article history you will see how the article developed and the research did not rely on the ABD.

Yours sincerely,William Macadam (talk) 18:21, 4 February 2021 (UTC)

William Macadam, there are a few similar paragraphs that need rephrasing (overlap can be seen here), given your current circumstances you shouldn't have to worry about it, I can fix it within a few days. Moneytrees🏝️Talk/CCI help 19:05, 4 February 2021 (UTC)
