Welcome
editHello MunsterFan2011 and welcome to Wikipedia! I'm AndrewvdBK, one of the many editors of this great website. I've posted this just to give you some useful advice and help you to settle in. You'll find that Wikipedia is much more than just articles and that there are many areas in which you can help out.
If you want to create an article, I would suggest using the Article Wizard. It will guide you through what you should do to write a great first article. To learn more about editing articles, this page will tell you all you need to know. |
To learn more about the fundamental principles by which Wikipedia operates, read about the 5 Pillars of Wikipedia. They should help you to understand exactly what the website stands for. |
You may not want to jump straight into editing and writing articles, which is perfectly understandable. The Sandbox is available for anyone to experiment in. You can even create your own sandbox if you wish. |
If you want, you can upload images to Wikipedia. However, you will have to know about the image use policy if you are going to upload images. This is largely due to copyright issues, which Wikipedia takes very seriously. |
It is important to be civil at all times and to respect the views of other users. Etiquette is a fundamental part of Wikipedia. Remember, the success of Wikipedia is down to teamwork and cooperation. |
I hope you enjoy your time on Wikipedia - it can seem very confusing at times, but you'll find that most people are more than willing to help you if you need it. The longer you spend on Wikipedia, the more you'll learn about how it works. If you do need help, you can contact me by leaving a note on my talk page and I'll get back to you as soon as I can. Alternatively, you can add the code {{helpme}}
to your user page and someone will come along to offer you assistance.
One last thing - remember to sign all your posts by typing 4 tildes (~~~~). This automatically inserts your username and the time and date of the post.

The article Troy Smith (rugby player) has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:
- Has not played for Munster, is on the A-team; development roster. Fails WP:NSPORTS.
While all contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.
You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}}
notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.
Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}}
will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Ravendrop 00:55, 4 October 2011 (UTC)

Deletion of Munster squad additions
editHi MumsterFan2011.
I'm wondering why you deleted the (referenced) addition of Christy Condon to the Munster Squad? I also added where John Ryan had joined the Squad from, again this was deleted, why?
Cfs198 (talk) 23:22, 21 January 2012 (UTC)
Hi Cfs198,
I deleted the addition of Christy Condon because he was added to the Heineken Cup squad, not the main senior squad. According to the Munster official website, he is not in the main squad and, as of present, is not in the academy squad either. I don't recall deleting where John Ryan joined the Munster squad from, but if I did then it was a mistake and I apologise.
MunsterFan2011
Hi MunsterFan2011,
I accept C Condon might not feature much this season for Munster but the fact remains he is a member of the squad. He may not appear on the player profiles on the official Munster site but that is often not an accurate source. E.g. Will Chambers is still listed as a player, and his replacement Tokula isn't. There have been many errors there over the years before they get around to updating them.
It is not accepted practice on wikipedia as I see it to remove referenced additions, no matter how you disagree with them. Find a superior, or at least a contradicting source before you remove such information.
With regard to the removal of in/out players that section evolves every year, and especially at this time of year as signings are announced. I retained all recent changes and removed those from the start of the season - over 6 months ago. Again this is the practice on rugby club pages.
Cfs198 (talk) 23:44, 14 March 2012 (UTC)
Hello again,
I'm afraid I still disagree with you over the Christy Condon issue. There is a difference with the senior Munster squad (the squad on the page) and the Heineken Cup squad. Condon has only been added to the HC squad. As far as I am aware, he had not signed a contract with Munster, eg Development, and has not been recruited into the Munster Academy, as there would have been some sort of notification had this happened. Playing for Munster A, which is all Condon has done so far, does not always mean the player is 'contracted' as such, as many AIL players are called-up to A teams as a trial-type arrangement. I appreciate that the Munster site is notoriously slow, but I am certain on this particular issue, not through the use of references or sources, but through knowledge of the contracting system used at Munster, and the basis on which a player ' joins' Munster.
In regards to your point about removing referenced additions, I believe you're refering to the deletion of the John Ryan reference. As I mentioned before, this was entirely accidental, 'user error' as they say, Please feel free to add the reference again. If you were refering to another matter in your point, please let me know.
I appreciate that it may be common practice to remove squad additions and exits as the season progresses on many rugby club pages, but in the time I've edited the Munster page that has not been the practice. All the in's and outs stay for the duration of the season, and are removed at the immediate conclusion of the season, allowing in's/outs for the incoming season to take preference. Given that there is little under two months remaining of the current season, it seems like a waste to remove them now. As far as I am aware, there are no regulations that enfore the removal of additions and exits after a certian amount of time, but please let me know if I am incorrect.
Regards,
MF11

Rugby Union Caps
editApologies for the mix-up regarding Buckley and Tuitupou, turns out the profiles I'd based my caps classification on were incorrect. Gonna be a hell of a job to re-organise all the stats now, do you know of any decent stats websites which include cup competition caps? — Preceding unsigned comment added by TheBlueFergie (talk • contribs) 00:48, 15 April 2012 (UTC)
Don't worry about it Sir! Worse things have happened, let me know if you want a hand with any. I've never come across a site that provides accurate, up-to-date figures for all comps, so I use espnscrum.com for the Aviva prem figures, and ercrugby.com for European figures. The only way I've ever found of obtaining figures for the Anglo-Welsh Cup is to individually go through the games the club has played. Some clubs do have very good stats on their player profiles on the official club websites, but, as far as I know, Sale Sharks don't.
Munster 200 Club
editMunsterFan2011, as I commented on Talk:Munster Rugby#200 Club, Munster Rugby#The '200' Club shows O'Gara on 232 appearences. This should be 234 given that he had his record 234th appearance on Saturday 5th January according to the official site Do you know how many other members of the 200 Club _may_ have the wrong total? I also note that the infobox now shows 233. Hamish59 (talk) 18:35, 6 January 2013 (UTC)
Hi Hamish59,
The figure of 233 for O'Gara's Munster caps is correct - one more cap than Peter Stringer. I know some media articles gave a figure of 234, but 233 is the right number of caps. I have updated the 200 club to display this - forgot to do it last time. Unfortunately, the munsterrugby.ie site is not accurate with all its details, but I have kept track of stats for some seasons now, so the numbers displayed on the pages are accurate.
MunsterFan2011
- Thank you for the clarification, MunsterFan2011. I will leave this in your very capable hands. Hamish59 (talk) 16:16, 12 January 2013 (UTC)
Well done
editHi there, just wanted to say well done for your work on various rugby pages have you joined the rugby union wiki project yet? Tomh903 (talk) 11:03, 11 February 2013 (UTC)
Hi, thanks very much, well done on your work too. I only really do the Munster and Ireland pages, is it worthwhile joining the ru wiki project?
Your welcome and yes it is worthwhile as you can help out editing and improving rugby union pages because there is a bit of backlog at the moment.Tomh903 (talk) 17:36, 15 February 2013 (UTC)
Improving Munster player's articles
editHello again,I just wanted to talk to you about my effort to get a few Munsters players articles upgraded to B quality on the rugby union wiki project.I know you are not part of the project but you and me are the only real dedicated editor's to Munster articles and this greatly adds to the prestige of the page.At the moment I don't think there is a Munster players article over a C quality which is pretty bad to be honest.I think we could easily get at least three articles up to B quality with a bit of work.Im thinking maybe O'Gara which only needs a few more bits of info as I have put in four images and a good bit more information recently.I also think Paul O'Connell and possibly even Donnacha O'Callaghan could be upgraded with substantial work.Any help at all would be appreciated.Thank you.Tomh903 (talk) 18:53, 10 March 2013 (UTC)
Hi, sounds like a good plan, just let me know what pages you want to do. I did A LOT of work on the ROG page last year, in fact I think most of what you see now I did in the end, so I'd definitely like to get his page up a bit. I've wanted to work on the POC and DOC pages for a while, so I'm in on those two. I've got a week off next month, so I'll get as much as possible done.
Thanks for the reply I think all we need to do on the ROG page is to add more information about the early 2000's but as I said the POC and DOC need a lot of work so you should probably concentrate on them.Tomh903 (talk) 21:50, 18 March 2013 (UTC)
Just thinking maybe we should separate ROG's international career into two sub sections, like maybe a 2000-2007 section and then a 2007-present section.Let me know what you think. Tomh903 (talk) 18:37, 28 March 2013 (UTC)
Maybe we could use the world cups as markers, start with his Ireland A cap in 1999 and then go through to the 03 wc, and then do 04-07 wc, 08-11 wc, 12-present? Also, if we do that for the internation section, probably need to do it for his Munster section as well.
Fine by me. I will let you do it since you have it thought out and by the way I managed to get the article upgraded from a Start to B class on the Ireland wiki project and the project member said that the only thing that's stopping it being a Good Article class is not enough citations so he will be putting in a few need citation tags in the next few days.Tomh903 (talk) 13:54, 2 April 2013 (UTC)
Congrats on getting the article up. I've noticed on the ROG page that there isn't anything for 2007 at Munster, so perhaps between us we can fix that. I've added the sub-sections that I previously mentioned - feel free to take a look and let me know what you think. I'm hoping to do some work on POC's page on Wednesday, I will let you know when I've finished.
Thanks, I will try and do a bit on 2007 soon but I was also thinking of adding a section listing all of ROG's international try's like on the Jonny Wilkinson article. The only problem is I don't have any source of information. Would you possibly know a website that lists all his international try's with the opposition, date etc...? Tomh903 (talk) 16:22, 9 April 2013 (UTC)
I know just the website, espnscrum.com. Just type in 'ronan o'gara' in the search box and it comes up with a link to his site profile at the top. On his page there is a link to his 'match list' - every international match he's played - you can filter it by tries or date and it has opposition, date and home or away, result, points scored - broken down into pens, cons, dg's and whether he started or came off the bench. It's a great site for international player/team stats and analysis.
Thanks again I just finished it but feel free to correct a few problems with the list like the site seems to be missing one of his try's or else I made a mistake making the list and forgot to add one.Tomh903 (talk) 20:11, 9 April 2013 (UTC)
I've done as much as I can for Paul O'Connell's page for now. I've also done a load of work on Donncha O'Callaghan's page, but need to do a bit more on it. I had a loook at the ROG try list - he scored two tries against Samoa in June 2003, corrected the table so all is good with it now I think.
Ok thanks for fixing that but on the ROG page there is a statement in either the Ireland or Munster section that I think would be more relevant at the top of the page. If you disagree with me moving the statement just revert the edit.Tomh903 (talk) 12:52, 17 April 2013 (UTC)
I'm going to nominate the O'Gara article for good status but the only problem is I don't know how. Do you have any idea where to ask for good article reviews?Tomh903 (talk) 18:05, 4 May 2013 (UTC)
No, sorry, not the slightest idea. Is there anyone in the rugby union project that can be of use to you?
The user from the Ireland wiki project, who reviewed the ROG article, is the one who suggested I put it up for good article review in the first place so I will ask him over on his talk page. By the way you might want to watch this user in the future: ChrisUppy. I think he's a vandal and he has already targeted the Munster page. I took down the material but I think he could try and vandalise players pages in the future. Tomh903 (talk) 08:30, 6 May 2013 (UTC)
Yeah, I saw, well spotted, I'll keep an eye out.
I think we should hold fire on ROG at the moment. I know the independent have 'confirmed' it, but there's nothing from Munster or the man himself. I'll undo the stuff, but feel free to add it again if it is properly confirmed.
Scrap that last, retirement has now been confirmed. I've updated ROG's page and the Munster page. I've made a retirement section on his page for any articles.
I've nominated the ROG page for good article status but unfortunately that could take well over a month for it to pass/fail. The recommendations say not to add anything substantial to the page while the review is underway so try not to make any changes unless it's with grammar or it's very important.Tomh903 (talk) 09:44, 3 June 2013 (UTC)
Ok, do you know what the chances are of it passing?
I would think it has a good chance of passing. If it doesn't all I will have to do is a few minor changes and it will probably pass the second assessment. There is a huge backlog though so it could take months for it to be assessed.Tomh903 (talk) 17:00, 3 June 2013 (UTC)
Remove Munster transfers for the 2012-13 season?
editShould one of us remove the transfer's for the 2012-13 season now that Munster's season is over? Tomh903 (talk) 09:00, 4 May 2013 (UTC)
Someone beat us to it.
Yes I see that now, a user by the name of Cfs198. Judging by his talk page he edits a lot of Irish rugby related topics and has been active since 2009 which is strange because I have never come across him before.Tomh903 (talk) 17:55, 4 May 2013 (UTC)
He usually only pops up when there's been a player transfer, he's very quick at editing the page to reflect it, and he has quite often removed previous seasons transfers (like yesterday) in the past. Other than that you won't really see him on the Munster page, probably because you and I have it covered.
Simon Zebo
editPlease can you advise why you reverted me without explanation? My edits were to bring the article better in line with policy and MOS, see WP:OPENPARA, WP:RS, WP:V, WP:BLP... GiantSnowman 16:33, 13 June 2013 (UTC)
Because his date of birth and birthplace should be at the top, like it is on all rugby pages, not in the Munster section which is just about his playing career with Munster. Also, you removed where he went to school, information someone might want to see, which would make the article worse.
- The place of birth should not be in the opening brackets, per WP:OPENPARA, and the information about his schools is unreferenced, and should not be in the lede per WP:LEDE as it is giving it undue weight. By all means feel free to re-add the school information to the new 'Early life' section I have added but only if you have reliable sources to back it up. Please also sign your talk page posts using four tildes - ~~~~ GiantSnowman 08:11, 14 June 2013 (UTC)

Help with the ROG page.
editThey have finally reviewed the ROG page and they have left a list of things to change before it can pass, as is with most pages. So that means everything I add/remove is being asked of me to do and I don't really have much of a choice. If you could help out with the list (You can find the link on the ROG talk page) then that would be great, but all the changes must be made in the next seven days or we fail.Tomh903 (talk) 07:22, 3 August 2013 (UTC)
Yeah sure, I'd be happy to help out, I'll do some tomorrow. To be honest, this whole reviewing process seems a bit silly to me, it seems like it's one persons opinion of what the page should be like, not an actual, official review. The changes the fella recommended are fine and all, but does it really change anything that much? I'm not sure he appreciates how difficult it is to find good rugby sources from the late 90s!
I've done a bit this morning, but I'm struggling to find sources for some of the issues. For example, I can find a source that proves that Rog is Ireland's highest points-scorer in World Cups, but not one that proves it was in the Russia game. Have you got a list of things you would like me to handle? I'm a bit pushed for time but I would like to help address the issues - I've put a lot of work into the O'Gara page over the years and when the guy talks about 'failing' the article, it annoys me a bit.
I've fixed about half of the problems the guy had with the references but I've tried for over an hour to find other sources with the information the guy is looking for and it's just not there. I'm going to go over to his talk page and ask him to cut a bit of slack seeing that most of the stuff he's looking for is not even on the internet.Tomh903 (talk) 11:22, 4 August 2013 (UTC)
Ok, I've finally got a source about his Munster debut so that is now fixed but he still want's the start of the article re-written. So could you please do that and I will try and get the other stuff done.

Date range formats
editPlease stop your disruptive editing by changing the date range formats to a different one than the format prescribed as per WP:DATERANGE. TheMightyPeanut (talk) 19:12, 8 February 2014 (UTC)
Wow, ok. I'll tell you what, truce, I'll propose a deal. Seeing as you stand by your wiki policy thingy and I stand my mine (clearly we aren't going to agree), I'll stop changing the dates on the super rugby players pages, as they would appear to be your area, and you leave my Munster players pages alone. From now on, I will only update caps, points etc. Deal? What I mean is, guys like GVDH, Laulala, Stander, any former, current or future Munster players who started in SR, I will leave the date format as the one you like and the other Mun players stay the way I like. Because, let's be serious here, this is just going to get silly. You'll continue to change them and I'll continue to change them back, in some pathetic tit for tat battle. The reasonable thing to do is compromise, neither of us have to be mad keen on it, but it means we can concentrate on more important work.
- I fully agree, it's silly. However, this is a Wikipedia policy. It really isn't a personal preference or anything. It's not a case of "the date format I like". It's a case of "the date format that should be used across Wikipedia". I'm simply trying to get more Wikipedia articles to comply with the prescribed format. Seriously, please read WP:DATERANGE. TheMightyPeanut (talk) 00:43, 9 February 2014 (UTC)
Hmmm, it's tacky and I don't like it, but you're right, it would appear that format should be used. Leave it with me, I will make all the changes myself tomorrow morning. I need to change some url's for reference as well, so I will change the date format along with that. Cheers for pointing that out.

Ways to improve 2016-17 Munster Rugby season
editHi, I'm MorbidEntree. MunsterFan2011, thanks for creating 2016-17 Munster Rugby season!
I've just tagged the page, using our page curation tools, as having some issues to fix. Notes about tables should go before the tables themselves.
The tags can be removed by you or another editor once the issues they mention are addressed. If you have questions, you can leave a comment on my talk page. Or, for more editing help, talk to the volunteers at the Teahouse. MorbidEntree (talk) 14:22, 20 May 2016 (UTC)

Hello, MunsterFan2011. I wanted to let you know that I’m proposing an article that you started, Bill Johnston (rugby union), for deletion because I don't think it meets our criteria for inclusion. If you don't want the article deleted:
- edit the page
- remove the text that looks like this:
{{proposed deletion/dated...}}
- save the page
Also, be sure to explain why you think the article should be kept in your edit summary or on the article's talk page. If you don't do so, it may be deleted later anyway.
You can leave a note on my talk page if you have questions.

New links...
editYou had a busy day! The following articles still link to old Munster profile pages, if you feel like completing the job:
- Mossy Lawler
- Christy Condon
- Patrick Howard (rugby union)
- Ben Cronin
- Jordan Coghlan
- Shane Monahan (rugby union)
- Mario Sagario
- Eoin Reddan
- John Andress
- Collie O'Shea
- Thomas du Toit
TheMightyPeanut (talk) 20:23, 8 March 2017 (UTC)
- Thanks for that, I've done all except Monahan, Andress, Sagario, O'Shea and du Toit, all of whom no longer appear to have profiles for some reason. Don't you just love it when a website changes all of its profile links? MunsterFan2011 (talk) 08:34, 9 March 2017 (UTC)
- Indeed, but that is why bare urls should be avoided, and used links should be archived. I found the following archived links for those:
- Shane Monahan (rugby union) – [1]
- Mario Sagario – [2]
- John Andress – [3]
- Collie O'Shea – [4]
- Thomas du Toit – [5]
TheMightyPeanut (talk) 09:12, 9 March 2017 (UTC)
Oh right, I didn't realise that was something that could be done, thank you for sorting out those last few. MunsterFan2011 (talk) 10:47, 9 March 2017 (UTC)
- It's a good habit to pick up. If you use a webpage as a reference, archive it off. That way, if the URL changes, it can still be retrieved. The way I usually do it is to simply go to the address bar in my browser and enter web.archive.org/save/ in front of the URL I'm trying to archive, e.g. web.archive.org/save/http://www.munsterrugby.ie/ will archive the Munster Rugby homepage. Once finished, it will give you the URL it's been archived to. If the URL changes, there are bots that will attempt to fix them up using these archive sites... TheMightyPeanut (talk) 12:33, 9 March 2017 (UTC)
- That does look like a good habit, thanks for the tip. Does it also work with references to match reports, squad updates etc, as I've noticed that a few of those have changed as well, and archiving would be much easier and faster than finding all the new urls? MunsterFan2011 (talk) 14:52, 9 March 2017 (UTC)
- Yes, it works with all (well, most) webpages. You can simply go to http://archive.org/web/ and search for an URL, it will show you all archived versions of that URL. TheMightyPeanut (talk) 15:15, 9 March 2017 (UTC)
- That's great, thank you very much. MunsterFan2011 (talk) 16:41, 9 March 2017 (UTC)
Recent updates
editHi there, in your most recent batch of updates re Ireland players, you claim they denied England a new world record of consecutive wins. That is incorrect. The current record is held by Cyprus with 24 wins, see here. Can you please fix this incorrect claim, or I will have to revert those edits? Thanks, TheMightyPeanut (talk) 07:48, 20 March 2017 (UTC)
- Oops, all done. MunsterFan2011 (talk) 10:24, 20 March 2017 (UTC)

Pro14 site
editHi there @MunsterFan2011:, just a quick query – how do you rate the official Pro14 website's reliability overall? I'm finding a number of errors on the site; is this usual, or just teething problems with the expansion? For example, comparing the Munster v Cheetahs match report on the the Pro14 website to the one on the SARU website:
- On the "Summary" tab, the Cheetahs points scorer name (Robbie Petzer) is missing.
- On the "Timeline" tab, it lists Jaco Taute as getting a yellow card in the 6th minute. I'm pretty sure that never happened (and it's not on the SARU match report).
- On the "Lineups" tab --> Cheetahs, it doesn't list Ali Mgijima coming on as a replacement. He came on in the 77th minute, according to the SARU match report, and according to the player profile on the Pro14 website.
- On the squad page, there are also issues, eg. it says Clayton Blommetjies scored 10 points (2 tries against Ulster according to his player profile), even though he scored only one try against Ulster; exactly the same for Mapimpi etc.
That seems like an unusual high amount of errors thus far. Would you know by any chance if these will be corrected eventually? TheMightyPeanut (talk) 02:11, 11 September 2017 (UTC)
- Hi @TheMightyPeanut:, overall, I rate it highly, but I've only ever approached it from a Munster perspective and, from just a cursory check of the information provided for both South African teams, it's apparent that the same level of reliability has not been given to the new teams, at least, not yet, which is concerning, as these reports are heavily used as sources throughout previous Pro14 seasons, as well as this ongoing season. Jaco Taute was definitely not given a yellow card at any point in the game, I'm not sure where whoever did the stats got that from! I agree that this is a high amount of errors, but my instinct is that it's a (usually) good site that is having some teething issues following the expansion. Of course, if these errors aren't corrected in good time, it would probably be safer to use the SARU reports for the South African teams, as the accuracy of the information given in the source is more important than which site the report comes from. Hope this helps. MunsterFan2011 (talk) 07:05, 11 September 2017 (UTC)
- Hi there, it does help, thanks. I'll keep an eye on it and see how it goes. It is the official site, so if it's not correct there, I don't know what we can rely on. I assume the IRFU get their info from the Pro14 site, because they also have a Taute yellow card here. TheMightyPeanut (talk) 09:58, 11 September 2017 (UTC)
- You're welcome. I think you're correct re the IRFU. This article from the Irish Independent has no mention of a yellow card and it has player substitutions, but it's from a newspaper rather than a dedicated rugby site. ESPNscrum's report here seems better. The commentary tab has player substitutions, but something to be aware of is their timekeeping - it's always one minute fast! MunsterFan2011 (talk) 11:50, 11 September 2017 (UTC)
- Excellent, thanks for that. I guess in the meantime, I'll keep an eye on all those sites. Thanks again! TheMightyPeanut (talk) 23:48, 11 September 2017 (UTC)

Red links
editHi there, I just noticed something – all the Munster Academy playing squad are red links. Red links should be used if the target pages should exist, but don't yet. However, most of these players in that section would not be notable, so they should not be linked at all. Just thought I'd point it out; I haven't gone through other teams' pages, but I'm pretty sure this issue isn't just confined to the Munster Rugby page... TheMightyPeanut (talk) 04:18, 12 January 2018 (UTC)
- Hi @TheMightyPeanut:, I didn't know that, thanks for pointing it it, I have removed the red links. I think you're right, it isn't limited to the Munster Page. MunsterFan2011 (talk) 07:03, 12 January 2018 (UTC)
Hiya... was wondering why James Cronin update was removed but just realised as you said; it was the wrong player! I added it because the team were obviously enjoying the big lad going over for one! Jack1986mkII
Hi User:MunsterFan2011 I realise that you have made some recent contributions to rugby union pages and thought I'd let you know that there are currently a number of discussion at WT:RU which might be of interest to you and could do with some more input. editRe: James Ratti
editHi Regarding your reverting of this edit: https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=List_of_2020%E2%80%9321_Pro14_transfers&oldid=prev&diff=938299232
- basically Ratti signed with the semi-pro Cardiff RFC for the 2019-20 season, as noted in the previous "List of Pro14 Transfers" page. He has been playing for both RFC and the Blues this seaons but his contract will be upgraded to a full Cardiff Blues contract from next season, so on that rationale I'd consider him a "new signing" (from Cardiff RFC) for the Blues for next season in the same way as the academy players are listed on these pages when they're upgraded to full contracts, sometimes several seasons after making their first appearance in a first team game. I agree that it's a gray area though and I'm happy to leave him off if you think it's better, though that does leave a gap in Ratti's history on the wiki. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Figaro-ahp (talk • contribs) 13:40, 13 February 2020 (UTC)
- Hi @Figaro-ahp:, I see your point, but when I read the source (https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/rugby-union/51228371), it sounds like Ratti has been immediately promoted to the Blues' senior squad. To be specific, this line encourages my opinion on this matter - "The 22-year-old has earned promotion to the Blues squad having joined Cardiff RFC in the summer of 2019.". Nowhere it the source, and correct me if I'm wrong, does it state that Ratti is being promoted next season, it implies that the promotion has taken place this season, hence why I reverted your edit. I'm more than happy to discuss this further, particularly if there are other sources that contradict what I'm saying, as the source above is the only one I have seen regarding this player. Kind regards, MunsterFan2011 (talk) 17:04, 13 February 2020 (UTC)
I'd say it's unclear when his contract was/will be upgraded. If he had already signed a contract with RFC for the year (which obviously included the option of representing the Senior blues team) though it wouldn't make sense to upgrade it mid season. But I agree it's not really possible to cite it one way or the other so perhaps best to leave it Figaro-ahp (talk) 13:18, 14 February 2020 (UTC)
- Hi @Figaro-ahp:, it's not uncommon for a players contract to be upgraded mid-season, it doesn't happen all the time I'll admit, but it has happened before. Perhaps you could bring this topic to Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Rugby union to get more of a consensus? Kind regards, MunsterFan2011 (talk) 20:11, 14 February 2020 (UTC)
Use of Initials on South African names
editHi @MunsterFan2011:, I notice you have moved the page for RG Snyman to R.G. Snyman and that CJ Stander was moved to C. J. Stander. Although these are obviously initials and the common consensus is to punctuate initials in names, MOS:Initials states that if a majority of sources use a specific variant it can be used. Have looked at google searches for both RG Snyman and R.G. Snyman there are more results for RG Snyman. Munster's official channels also use RG Snyman and the player himself on his social media uses RG Snyman. This also seems to be the case for CJ Stander. A large number of South African's don't seem to punctuate their initialed name, and so was wondering on your opinion on this, and whether or not it would be worth creating a request move for these players. If there has previously been a consensus on this that I haven't seen then apologies. Thanks. Rugbyfan22 (talk) 09:46, 11 July 2020 (UTC)
- Hello @Rugbyfan22:, I'm not aware of a consensus on this topic, but I'd be lying if I said I had searched for one. I had presumed that following the page move for CJ Stander by user PeeJay2k3, that was the right thing to do, hence why I moved RG Snyman to R. G. Snyman, but I didn't know until you pointed it out above that MOS:INITIALS allows for unpunctuated names. As for my opinion...I guess I can see the merits of both arguments. Grammatically, they are initials and should be punctuated, but as you say, the vast majority of sources and the players themselves do not observe this and Wiki allows for unpunctuated initials. In my mind, neither is wrong. I think the best course of action would be to start this topic on the Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Rugby union page and achieve a consensus there, as I'd imagine there will be a decent number of people who'd contribute to the discussion. MunsterFan2011 (talk) 09:32, 12 July 2020 (UTC)
- Hi @MunsterFan201:, have listed on Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Rugby union. I have found another player that was moved with no consensus, but there are a large number of professionals (mainly playing under Super Rugby level, and so less viewed players) who don't have the punctuation. I'll see what people's views are. Rugbyfan22 (talk) 10:34, 12 July 2020 (UTC)
- Hi @Rugbyfan22:, good stuff, I can see someone has already responded, so hopefully that will generate some debate and a way forward. MunsterFan2011 (talk) 17:16, 13 July 2020 (UTC)
- Hi MunsterFan2011, the three RM's have closed in favour of the move and I have edited to tidy up these moves. I have noticed that there are a couple of other players on the Munster page (J. J. Hanrahan and B. J. Botha) who might be in the same situation. If they are and you wish to move then, I believe there is consensus for the move due to the other three pages being moved. Regards. Rugbyfan22 (talk) 16:51, 1 August 2020 (UTC)
- Hi Rugbyfan22, I completely agree, I have moved B. J. Botha back to BJ Botha and I've also moved J. P. Ferreira back to JP Ferreira. I'll move J. J. Hanrahan to JJ Hanrahan tomorrow if it's all the same to you - I can't abide re-directs, so I've just gone through and corrected any re-directs for C. J. Stander, R. G. Snyman and B. J. Botha, and that's enough for one night! Congrats on achieving successful page moves. MunsterFan2011 (talk) 18:12, 1 August 2020 (UTC)
- Hi again @Rugbyfan22:, I've just tried to move J. J. Hanrahan to JJ Hanrahan, but it won't let, it says the page JJ Hanrahan already exists, which it does - as the re-direct page to J. J. Hanrahan. It suggested that a requested move would be necessary to move the page, would you agree that that's the option to be pursued in this case? MunsterFan2011 (talk) 09:42, 2 August 2020 (UTC)
- Hi MunsterFan2011, Having looked at the guide for deleting redirects, a request a move is necessary in this case. Having searched the player, I believe their is a strong case for it do be moved, and would support it if you were to request a move for it. The talk pages for CJ Stander and Talk:RG Snyman show the cases I made for those players if you want to use them as an example or a guide. Having looked at when the player was previously moved to J. J. Hanrahan, there have been many changes to MOS:INITIALS since then and so believe a request move would pass. Rugbyfan22 (talk) 20:08, 2 August 2020 (UTC)
- Have listed a request-a-move on J. J. Hanrahan. Regards. Rugbyfan22 (talk) 12:46, 3 August 2020 (UTC)
- Hi Rugbyfan22, thanks very much for doing that, much appreciated. I might have figured out how to do the request in the end, but then again, maybe not! I've added a comment in support of the move. MunsterFan2011 (talk) 15:27, 3 August 2020 (UTC)

Interested in working on these Munster Rugby articles?
editAs you can see from the previous note, some Irish rugby rivalry articles are up for deletion. The articles at AfD include three Munster rivalries:
- History of rugby union matches between Munster and Connacht
- History of rugby union matches between Leinster and Munster
- History of rugby union matches between Munster and Ulster
Any interest in working on these articles to improve them by adding text and citations re the rivalry? I've already made improvements to a couple of Irish rugby rivalry articles (eg, Munster-Leinster rivalry, and Leinster-Connacht rivalry), and would very much value your contribution if you're up for it. editI'm thinking there is rising interest in his methods and approaches, and it would make a sensible and value-adding paragraph for wiki to include such analysis in his entry. see e.g. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carwyn_James. . However I accept there is no such comment here https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clive_Woodward#Rugby_coaching_career or here https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Warren_Gatland#Coaching_career. editMaintenance tags
editHey man, not sure if you know this, but you don't need to update the dates on maintenance tags every month. In fact, it's actively discouraged since those templates are on thousands of pages, and updating them every month puts unnecessary load on the Wikimedia servers. Anyway, have a good one! – PeeJay 15:18, 9 August 2022 (UTC)
- Hi there, I didn't know that, I thought it was something that needed to be kept up-to-date, so thank you for letting me know, much appreciated. Have a good one too! MunsterFan2011 (talk) 09:28, 24 August 2022 (UTC)

Jean Kleyn
editHello @MunsterFan2011. Thank you for your edit https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Jean_Kleyn&oldid=1163811393. I am not sure why it has to be hidden? A thought experiment: what happens if Kleyn does not play on Saturday? Does this mean he was not officially selected? Ear-phone (talk) 15:55, 6 July 2023 (UTC)
- Hi there, I was recently advised that team's for who a player has not yet/never received a cap should not be displayed in the infobox i.e. we shouldn't be displaying teams for who the player has zero caps. Once Kleyn has started for South Africa on Saturday, the hidden entries can be restored, even if he was to only play, say, five minutes. I believe it's simply because Kleyn could, in theory, still miss the match through injury (were he to sustain one in the build-up to the match) and could, again in theory, end up never playing for South Africa.
