Local government districts and 'downland'

Yes, I would say that Bournemouth and Poole, and other unitary authorities, are local government districts. This is because they are a type of district, and are represented as a whole in local government.

I read a few days ago on the Spanish Wikipedia that you wanted this defined, and I made a reply but it wouldn't save, then I forgot about it (clumsy me!).

I also was going to help with that word 'downland'. The word 'downland' is used in southern England to refer to low and shallow hills (probably less than 1000 m) that are part of the Chalk Formation. This definition is not related to the word 'down' in the normal sense, so it is not the same as 'lowland'. It is a bit confusing I know, but that is the way with languages sometimes!

A303

The A303 is at the far north of Dorset.

The A303 does, just about, go through Dorset (see map). It probably isn't mentioned because the road only runs into Dorset for a short distance in the very far north of the county, and doesn't join any roads while in the county. It connects to the A350 road which runs to Poole, but that is while it is in Hampshire. Ross^English 06:28, 11 April 2008 (UTC)
