Maintenance

As part of routine maintenance, can an administrator please delete all the temporary monthly clean-up categories that have been emptied at User:Pkbwcgs/Wikipedia maintenance/Monthly cleanup categories for deletion. To make the admin's life easier, I have gone and found all the empty categories with automatic tagging for deletion. Help from an admin would be very much appreciated and all the empty temporary monthly clean-up categories I have compiled is at User:Pkbwcgs/Wikipedia maintenance/Monthly cleanup categories for deletion. Thanks. Pkbwcgs (talk) 20:33, 21 August 2018 (UTC)

@Ronhjones: I have added three more empty categories for deletion at User:Pkbwcgs/Wikipedia maintenance/Monthly cleanup categories for deletion. Can you please delete those three. Thanks. Pkbwcgs (talk) 08:52, 23 August 2018 (UTC)

PDFs

I agree with you that a PDF which is a crude scan of a twelve page act of parliament should be deleted. However, I found recently that a PDF consisting of just one image can actually be used in an article as in this example. So I suggest keeping such PDFs. On the other hand if the image has a massive border as with file:Subduation model for the spreading of the South China Sea.pdf, it is almost useless and perhaps should be deleted. — RHaworth (talk · contribs) 08:56, 24 August 2018 (UTC)

@RHaworth: I agree. I am going through this whole list of PDFs which date back to 2006 and older and tagging them. However, the use of File:Subduation model for the spreading of the South China Sea.pdf doesn't look good in Geological history of Borneo and as it is a duplicate of File:Continental rift model for the spreading of the South China Sea.png, I will tag File:Subduation model for the spreading of the South China Sea.pdf for deletion. Thanks. Pkbwcgs (talk) 09:01, 24 August 2018 (UTC)
Actually, it isn't a duplicate. However, the use of the file in Geological history of Borneo doesn't look good. Pkbwcgs (talk) 09:03, 24 August 2018 (UTC)
Actually, I will crop it myself to get rid of the massive border. Pkbwcgs (talk) 09:11, 24 August 2018 (UTC)
It is a PDF so I can't crop it and I can't upload it as a new file. Pkbwcgs (talk) 09:14, 24 August 2018 (UTC)
@RHaworth: Thanks for deleting the files. I am going to look carefully next time as to what meets the criteria. Pkbwcgs (talk) 09:36, 24 August 2018 (UTC)
File:SRS energy levels scheme.pdf has the potential to be used somewhere so I won't tag it for deletion. Pkbwcgs (talk) 10:03, 24 August 2018 (UTC)

PDFs can be converted to proper images and then cropped. Compare and contrast File:Continental rift model for the spreading of the South China Sea.pdf with File:Continental rift model for the spreading of the South China Sea.png. I thought I was going mad today because I could not replicate the way in which I had done the conversion. Eventually in my version of Adobe Reader I noticed an anonymous pull down list with options including "Paste", "Find" and "Advanced search". Among these is "Take Snapshot". Turn that on and you can use your mouse to select the required area of the image. Copy it and paste into your image edit program. The magnification in your PDF viewer does affect the result but using 100% is probably OK. — RHaworth (talk · contribs) 20:17, 24 August 2018 (UTC)
