I believe that the redirect at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beam_reach is too specific, but I'm a new gnome... I accidentally blanked the redirect and just managed to replace it, but I think the redirect page should be deleted... What do you recommend? Can you delete the page?
I just read http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Redirect#When_should_we_delete_a_redirect.3F , but am not sure what "unreasonably difficult" means. I got into this because I noticed that typing "Beam Reach" into the Wikipedia side bar search box and hitting "Go" or the carriage return led directly to a point of sail definition, when the phrase could be mentioned in many other articles, including ones about an ongoing real estate development outside of London, England, or (full disclosure) my organization -- a non-profit marine science school in Seattle, WA, USA -- that has been contributing content related to killer whales, bioacoustics, and hydrophones.
I understand now that if I click on the "Search" button instead, I get "reasonable" behavior. So, perhaps this is warranted since the common meaning of "Beam Reach" is certainly a point of sail. I'm open to your editorial guidance on the issue. Please let me know if I should make such requests (for deletion) elsewhere. I'm a bit bewildered by the array of editorial options and procedures today...
- Welcome to Wikipedia. In general, when there is a redirect in existence that could refer to multiple articles, it's best to edit that redirect and turn it into a disambiguation page. Alternatively, you could create Beam reach (disambiguation) and add a link to that page in the Beam reach section of Points of sail using the template {{Otheruses}}:
- Usually we don't delete pages unless they're really unencyclopedic, or meet the Criteria for Speedy Deletion. It's always preferred to find an alternative to deletion in any circumstance, so I'd recommend trying to work with the page(s) for now rather than delete it. Hope this helps!
