Hemisphere differentiation and Wikipedia

Thank you for helping out with State Fair (novel). I appreciate your efforts to fix up Wikipedia!

To better assist with that, I need to talk about hemisphere differentiation. I do this because many readers come from the southern hemisphere: Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, and non-English speaking countries there. Because of that, they may think of "summer" as being in December. I use "northern hemisphere" to make it crystal clear to a worldwide audience which summer it's talking about.

Also, about this, I understand that repetition is something to be avoided, but I also try to be careful to avoid changing what the source material says. I do not know the fictional town's distance to Des Moines. If the town is in the opposite end of the state a case could be made that they are not a "local" to the area around Des Moines.

If this was set in Texas I would have certainly reverted that edit unless I knew that the fictional town was in close distance to the big city, because there would have been the possibility the family would have been from another part of the state.

To be honest, if you feel that international readers cannot reason that an American writer, living in the United States, making a decision during a calendar year needs to have the qualification of Northern Hemisphere included, then go ahead. Frankly, its reads in a stilted manner. I find the convention one of the silly reasons why I don't contribute to Wikipedia any longer. I don't mean to be flip, and I don't mean to insult your reasoning, since it is inline with Wikipedias agreed upon conventions. To me it appears stilted. As for not tampering with source material, if it is so important that it remain as exact as the source had it, shouldn't it be in quotation marks? Just curious, have you read the book? I have found that the subject image that you recently uploaded was more than 5% in excess of the Non-free content guideline size of 100,000 pixels. I have tagged the image for a standard reduction, which (for jpg/gif/png/svg files) normally happens within a day. Please check the reduced image, and make sure that the image is not excessively corrupted. Other files will be added to Category:Wikipedia non-free file size reduction requests for manual processing. There is a full seven-day period before the original oversized image will be hidden; during that time you might want to consider editing the original image yourself (perhaps an initial crop to allow a smaller reduction or none at all). A formula for the calculation of the desired size can be found at WP:Image resolution, along with instructions on how to tag the image in the rare cases that it requires an oversized image (typically about 0.2% of non-free uploads are tagged as necessarily oversized).
