Replaceable fair use File:Lin Homer 1.jpg
editThanks for uploading File:Lin Homer 1.jpg. I noticed the description page specifies that this media item is being used under a claim of fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails the first non-free content criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed media item could be found or created that provides substantially the same information or which could be adequately covered with text alone. If you believe this media item is not replaceable, please:
- Go to the file description page and edit it to add
{{di-replaceable fair use disputed}}
, without deleting the original replaceable fair use template. - On the file discussion page, write the reason why this media item is not replaceable at all.
Alternatively, you can also choose to replace this non-free media item by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by creating new media yourself (for example, by taking your own photograph of the subject).
If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified how these media fully satisfy our non-free content criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, non-free media which could be replaced by freely licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification (7 days if uploaded before 13 July 2006), per the non-free content policy. If you have any questions, please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Fut.Perf. ☼ 12:17, 5 July 2013 (UTC)

A tag has been placed on your user page, User:Sladedesign/sandbox/sladedesign, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G11 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the page appears to be blatant advertising which only promotes or publicises a company, product, group or service, and which is a violation of our policies regarding acceptable use of user pages; user pages are intended for active editors of Wikipedia to communicate with one another as part of the process of creating encyclopedic content, and should not be mistaken for free webhosting resources. Please read the guidelines on spam, the guidelines on user pages, and, especially, our FAQ for Organizations.
If you can indicate why the page is not blatant advertising, contest the deletion by clicking on the button that looks like this: Click here to contest this speedy deletion which appears inside of the speedy deletion ({{db-...}}
) tag (if no such tag exists, the page is no longer a speedy deletion candidate). Doing so will take you to your user talk page where you will find a pre-formatted place for you to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. You can also edit this page directly to give your reasons, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the page that would help make it encyclopedic. Feel free to leave a note on my talk page if you have any questions about this. Roger (Dodger67) (talk) 11:43, 6 October 2015 (UTC)
Wikipedia and copyright
editHello Sladedesign, and welcome to Wikipedia. All or some of your addition(s) to St Neots have been removed, as they appear to have added copyrighted material without evidence of permission from the copyright holder. While we appreciate your contributions to Wikipedia, there are certain things you must keep in mind about using information from sources to avoid copyright and plagiarism issues here.
- You can only copy/translate a small amount of a source, and you must mark what you take as a direct quotation with double quotation marks (") and cite the source using an inline citation. You can read about this at Wikipedia:Non-free content in the sections on "text". See also Help:Referencing for beginners, for how to cite sources here.
- Aside from limited quotation, you must put all information in your own words and structure, in proper paraphrase. Following the source's words too closely can create copyright problems, so it is not permitted here; see Wikipedia:Close paraphrasing. (There is a college-level introduction to paraphrase, with examples, hosted by the Online Writing Lab of Purdue.) Even when using your own words, you are still, however, asked to cite your sources to verify the information and to demonstrate that the content is not original research.
- Our primary policy on using copyrighted content is Wikipedia:Copyrights. You may also want to review Wikipedia:Copy-paste.
- If you own the copyright to the source you want to copy or are a legally designated agent, you may be able to license that text so that we can publish it here. Understand, though, that unlike many other sites, where a person can license their content for use there and retain non-free ownership, that is not possible at Wikipedia. Rather, the release of content must be irrevocable, to the world, into the public domain (PD) or under a suitably-free and compatible copyright license. Such a release must be done in a verifiable manner, so that the authority of the person purporting to release the copyright is evidenced. See Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials.
- In very rare cases (that is, for sources that are PD or compatibly licensed) it may be possible to include greater portions of a source text. However, please seek help at Wikipedia:Media copyright questions, the help desk or the Teahouse before adding such content to the article. 99.9% of sources may not be added in this way, so it is necessary to seek confirmation first. If you do confirm that a source is public domain or compatibly licensed, you will still need to provide full attribution; see Wikipedia:Plagiarism for the steps you need to follow.
- Also note that Wikipedia articles may not be copied or translated without attribution. If you want to copy or translate from another Wikipedia project or article, you must follow the copyright attribution steps in Wikipedia:Translation#How to translate. See also Wikipedia:Copying within Wikipedia.
It's very important that contributors understand and follow these practices, as policy requires that people who persistently do not must be blocked from editing. If you have any questions about this, you are welcome to leave me a message on my talk page. Thank you. — Diannaa 🍁 (talk) 19:44, 18 January 2019 (UTC)
Speedy deletion nomination of Life Squared
editIf this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.
You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.
A tag has been placed on Life Squared, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G11 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the page seems to be unambiguous advertising which only promotes a company, group, product, service, person, or point of view and would need to be fundamentally rewritten in order to become encyclopedic. Please read the guidelines on spam and Wikipedia:FAQ/Organizations for more information.
If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator. ... discospinster talk 14:53, 9 December 2019 (UTC)

Hoary (talk) 09:28, 10 May 2021 (UTC)St Neots pages
editThanks for your kind words on my talk page.
I have never quite understood -- in this situation -- whether Wikipedia automatically tells you if I have replied to you on my page, so I thought this time I would reply here.
As you have seen I have recast the St Neots page quite a lot; there was a lot of stuff on it that would put the casual reader off. There is still some work to do; I think the section order towards the bottom isn't right yet, and some of the information still needs refining.
As you have seen, my drone-owning contact has done some good work. I am hoping he will do a panorama of St Neots, like the one for Eaton Socon. (I would like to get the panorama at Eaton Socon right at the top of the page, but I fear that some people would object to the infobox being moved down.) I hate infoboxes; they are visually unappealing. Do we really need to know that the Police area is Cambridgeshire?
Again thanks for your support, I am still on the case. Afterbrunel (talk) 05:54, 3 June 2021 (UTC)
- Nope alas no automatic notification but this works here. Agreed there was lots of unnecessary and irrelevant information about the town so great to see it cut. If you need another drone/land photographer I can recommend my friend, and local St Neots guy Maciek Platek. If you need any other contacts let me know.
- Just for reference, the local history section in Huntingdon library is also very good and if you need any historical stuff about the Eatons they will be held at the Bedfordshire records offices and libraries. Richard Slade 09:43, 3 June 2021 (UTC)
- Thanks Richard. Maciek was the second kind drone owner to reply. Please especially thank him for me, for his kind offer. I had a conference (well, a chat) with the first volunteer earlier today and he is going to some more. The articles are all ratehr picture-heavy now; I must get back to writing text. There is still a heck of a lot to do, and the History page is already biugger than "recommended". Still to do sanitation, education, street lighting, gas and elec. Not to mention correcting my typos. Then there is cross-checking against Gorham (groan) and the Escon pamphlets and the SN Local Hist Soc stuff. Then there is the Norris collection of old photos at St Ives (but a lot covering St Neots), the Museum collection ("You can come in on a Tuesday and look at the thumbnails in the computer, but we haven't got digital copies.")
- My home network is down at the moment and I am writing this now with the benefit of some cabling until that gets sorted out; it means that I can't really do very much today (or yesterday), and in fact all I am doing now apart from replying to you is uploading pics I took myself the other day. WHich then reminded me that I have started a section on the Workhouse Eaton Ford, that says "To be written". If I had done that on a railway article it would have been deleted by now. Afterbrunel (talk) 14:53, 3 June 2021 (UTC)
- Richard, I wonder if you could do something to help with this. I'd like to get AUTHORITATIVE population figures. St N, Eynesbury, Eaton Socon, Eaton Ford separately. Is that something you could work on? It's on the internet somewhere. Don't forget the boundary change when Eaton F and S joined St Neots; and the UDC change when Eynesbury Hardwicke split and the urban part of Eynesbury joined St Neots UDC and the Hardwicke bit stayed out; ditto Abbotsley.
- Mostly population data coincides with census years, and there is a porediction of the 2021 figure somewhere; maybe they have alrady done the computer run and it's an actual, not a preduiction.
- We don't need every census year, just pre-war (say) and then 1951 and if possible every ten years.
- I must empasise all of this needs to be able to be cited, back to authoritative information (so not for example a booklet issued by the Town Council unless it says "Figures derived from XYZ")
- I also emphasise that this is a tall order, and if you don't fancy it, then there are no hard feelings (but please let me know!). Afterbrunel (talk) 15:38, 3 June 2021 (UTC)
- Hey Nigel, I can take a look to see what I can find, although the Cambridgeshire Insight is generally the best place within this county to get that type of data. Leave it with me and I'll dig. Richard Slade 16:35, 4 June 2021 (UTC)
