Sean, I have written a new article, Chesterfield Railway. Could you look it over, categorize, and it it elsewhere as appropriate? Thanks. Vaoverland 09:44, 6 Dec 2004 (UTC)

Sean: All of this is posted on the Trains to/do talk page, I just don't know how to get your attention the best way, SBTC (Sorry 'bout that, chief). Hope you like my new work. I want it to fit in and be appropriate though. Mark Vaoverland 22:25, 7 Dec 2004 (UTC)

I have been doing a lot of research and some article work on things related to Virginia's railroads.

1. some older railroads don't seem to have AAR symbols and/or logos 2. project would benefit for a consistent way of indication of progression/succession to current major US railroads 3. individuals are becoming identified, some rather obscure

I want my work to fit in properly, and would appreciate some guidance, and help so I can concentrate my work on content. The following are suggestions/problems for the coordinator for Wikiproject Trains. I do not have a problem with eliminating some which may be considered inappropriate for the project or WP.

Thanks for any help! Vaoverland 22:01, 7 Dec 2004 (UTC)

NOTE: The following are NS predecessors. By 1890, the R&D System covered 3,300 miles of track in Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Tennessee, Alabama, Mississippi, Arkansas, and Texas. In 1892, the R&D and subsidiaries entered receivership. Reorganized by J.P. Morgan and his New York banking firm of Drexel, Morgan and Company, they emerged in 1894 as the Southern Railway CompanySouthern Railway Company]], which controlled over 4,000 miles of line at its inception. In 1980, Southern Railway Company changed its name to Norfolk Southern Railway, and became part of today's Norfolk Southern Corporation.

The Humungous Image Tagging Project

edit

Hi. You've helped with the Wikipedia:WikiProject Wiki Syntax, so I thought it worth alerting you to the latest and greatest of Wikipedia fixing project, User:Yann/Untagged Images, which is seeking to put copyright tags on all of the untagged images. There are probably, oh, thirty thousand or so to do (he said, reaching into the air for a large figure). But hey: they're images ... you'll get to see lots of random pretty pictures. That must be better than looking for at at and the the, non? You know you'll love it. best wishes --Tagishsimon (talk)

Moving pages

edit

Hi, when you move a page, you should do so using the "Move this page" link; please do not move things with cut-and-paste (which loses the history, which is left at the old location. Thanks! Noel (talk) 12:28, 12 Dec 2004 (UTC)

I'm a little at a loss for the reference you made on my talk page. I am aware of how to move a page, but I'm not sure which page you are referring to. The only data moving that I've done recently is from User:Slambo/Trains to User talk:Slambo and from User talk:Slambo to User talk:Slambo/Archive 0412. My contribution history shows that I haven't moved any pages recently. The great majority of my recent edits are creating new "<year> in rail transport" pages, and adding redirects as appropriate. So, I'm a little confused, what edits are you referring to? Thanks. slambo 16:28, Dec 12, 2004 (UTC)

Hi, I ran across you saying you'd done a cut-and-paste move in User_talk:SPUI; it was Talk:Wisconsin and Southern/to do and Talk:Wisconsin & Southern/to do, although looking at the actual histories something different may have happened (it's a little confusing). Anyway, even if someone else did a real move in this case, in general cut-and-paste moves are deprecated. Noel (talk) 19:23, 12 Dec 2004 (UTC)

Ah, I understand. Here's what happened... The other user did a move on the main page, but the todo subpage wasn't automatically moved with it. Since the todo page didn't migrate as a result of the move operation, the copy/paste was needed to copy the subpage's data. I think we ran into a feature in the software that the Move function didn't move the subpage with the main page. I haven't seen anything yet that this feature has been addressed. slambo 22:21, Dec 12, 2004 (UTC)

Right, I figured that out. You can use "Move page" on any page, though, including subpages, so you didn't have to do a cut-and-paste. There's no problem at all in this particular case, so "no problem", but I just wanted to give you a "heads-up" that in general cut-and-paste is never the right answer. CL&N

edit

Salve, Slambo!
I took a look at the two issues re the Cincinnati, Lebanon, and Northern Railroad you raised on the talk page. I moved the sentence re the Avondale road up a couple sentences so its in chronological order. And the first receivership was in 1879, not 1876 as I had. I don't know that I'm enough of a devotee to be called a train buff, but I do have a interest in those in my neck of the woods, like the CL&N and the Middletown and Cincinnati Railroad. If I can be of help in the future, let me know. Ave! PedanticallySpeaking 20:22, Dec 13, 2004 (UTC)

Followed the link and agree with your interpretation of the Smithsonian's policy. I also understand and agree that a pic of the current display is also desirable. EMD E2

edit

Eleven minutes after I created EMD E2, Hoary voted to delete it as non-notable. With his comment about "a ginormous set of such articles", he might be gunning for the whole project. Please vote as you see fit. Rmeier 07:53, 19 Dec 2004 (UTC)

"consist"

edit

Sometime if you or one of your rail buddies has time, it would be great if you could find a way to work in the noun definition of consist at the first usage in Autorack (and any other articles you've used it in, and preferably add it to Rail terminology). I have a larger vocabulary than most native English speakers, and I still had to look it up to find the definition in this context. I don't think I'm familiar enuf with this usage to do it myself. Thanks. Niteowlneils 04:17, 19 Dec 2004 (UTC)

Excellent observation! This use of the word seems to have developed in railway use as a way of abbreviated way to describe a listing of the individual rail vehicles in a train. I have added a short article consist and an entry on the railway terminology article. I have also added internal links in the Autorack, Auto Train, and Auto-Train Corporation articles.
