Still here

I know it's been a terribly long time on this issue, but I haven't forgotten about it. I've been hesitant over moving images that I didn't create or find on my own mostly out of copyright and licensing concerns; specifically, I still need to fully review the terms on these images or to review the processes for moving images that are not my own. Templates

Hi there, hope you don't mind me asking but I was wondering if you had some advice on WikiProject talk page templates. I've noticed that the {{TrainsWikiProject}} is very similar to one we have over at WikiProject Amusement Parks, {{AmusementParkProject}}. Similar to the trains template, this includes descendant WPs on the same message - eg. "This article is also part of WikiProject Roller Coasters", however by 'grouping' them onto one template, the class rating is only applicable to the main topic. Just wondering if you knew of a way to copy the rating across all related WPs without having to have more than one class field? Thanks in advance, and apologies if I've completely confused you! New York, Westchester and Boston Railway

I'm sorry that I hadn't checked to determine the convention used. I'm willing to manually cahnge all of the articles that link to "New York, Westchester and Boston" to the conventional name. I have three related questions before closing this matter. The formal name of the company appears to have been "New York, Westchester & Boston Railway Company".

• Am I correct that the convention would exclude "Company"?
• I consulted WP:MOS, which is neutral on a case like this one and decided to use "and" instead of "&". Does that accord with most common practice in the Railroad project?
• Is it in fully in editors' discretion as to how corporate history and "real" history are combined ? Is there some preference in the Project about this ?

Hi, enthusiasts who happen to arrive at Wikipedia may not be familiar with our policy that by clicking on a particular image they get all the relevant details, including, in those two cases, the exact type, numbering, dates etc. of the vehicles pictured—and that's what most of them want. help with undoing a page move

Hello, Your name was passed to me on Wikipedia talk:WikiProject UK Waterways#Lock, tunnel names, etc about being able to revert a page move that has turned out to be contentious and which was done without prior discussion. Your experience in dealing with similar problems to do with the names of railway stations was mentioned in this context. The problem page is at the moment called Little Bedwyn lock, which is was moved to eventually from the established (and in my view, correct) name of Little Bedwyn Lock. The page change went through an intermediate change (to Bedwyn little lock, which is totally incorrect) which has somehow prevented a simple reversion of the page move to take place. It was suggested that you may be able to perform this task, as well as removing the totally incorrect redirect page at Bedwyn little lock. (That is, move Little Bedwyn lock to Little Bedwyn Lock.) I hesitate to suggest that Little Bedwyn lock should also be removed, but doing that would leave many other redirect pages undeleted which use similar novel names for various locks. Morristown Station?

Way back in December 2005, you put in a request for an article on "Morristown Station" on the WikiProject Trains To-do list. This wouldn't happen to be Morristown, New Jersey, would it? I don't know of any other station in Morristown, NJ. The existing article includes the 1915 station house which was built by the Delaware, Lackawanna & Western Railroad. However, the address for the New Jersey Transit one is listed a 122 Morris Avenue, while the NRHP lists it as 132 Morris Street(http://www.nationalregisterofhistoricplaces.com/NJ/Morris/state.html). On track ballast...

I haven't heard a specific term, but that doesn't mean one doesn't exist. However, I just happen to be working on a clinic to present at my local NMRA division about modeling ballasted track and properly scenicking the right-of-way, so it may turn up in my research soon. Name for rapid transit

Why not rename it to Rail rapid transit or Rapid transit (rail transport)? Should i put this on the rapid transit page? I also think there should also be a page on the different types of rapid transit in general, whether bus, rail or otherwise. Simply south 16:39, 6 October 2007 (UTC)

2017 in rail transport

Not related to the AfD, but found as a result of browsing beyond...

These articles ("20xx in rail transport") are automatically categorised under Category:Future events, however, they are all bizarrely appearing in the 'P' section. Having had a quick look at the problem, I can see it must relate to the template usage (hence notifying the expert!), but I'm afraid I haven't spent any time debugging them.

Incidentally, another argument against the AfD is that the articles provide a means of navigating up and down the series. The series may be followed until 2014, but then there's a gap before later years (2017 and 2019, at least). I would argue that the missing pages should also be created, as redirects to an appropriate list page if necessary, so that complete navigation to the latest available year may be achieved.

extensive removal of links

Slambo, I have noticed that you have removed links to mic-ro.com/metro/ from almost every transit-related Wikipedia page, including links that have been there for a long time (e.g. Rio). I can only consider this as short-sighted and destructive. Maybe you didn't take a look at the pages the links you deleted pointed to. Metro Bits is a non-profit website containing theme-based pages and high-quality photo galleries about various subway cities. Links pointing to such pages add useful information to metro-related Wikipedia pages.

Not only me, but also many other Wikipedia authors have for a long time been adding Metro Bits links to Wikipedia pages, especially in other-languages versions of Wikipedia. Wikipedia authors have also used Metro Bits as a reference for some articles. You might also have noticed that I have contributed content to the English and German versions of Wikipedia (apart from the links you have deleted).

Around 4 October 2007 you have obviously noticed that I have added a number of Metro Bits links to Wikipedia pages. This was not a spam attack as you might have perceived it, the reason was simply that Metro Bits had been dead for several weeks (31 August to 1 October) due to a technical failure by the webspace provider. Now that the problem is fixed I wanted to restore links that might have been deleted in the meantime because Wikipedia users might have noticed the dead links. I didn't keep track of where links had been nor did I check the history of every page.

I suggest that you restore the links you have deleted because they add useful resources to Wikipedia and provide benefit for Wikipedia users.

List of historic rail accidents

I was sorry to see that the article on list of rail accidents of major historic significance was deleted - I had missed the discussion. The rason for having this was that the current list of accidents is impossibly long (even when broken into sections) and you can't see the wood for the trees. There is, I am sure, a distinction to be made between major disasters killing 50+ people, or which led to a major change in operating practices, and the hundreds and thousands of more minor accidents. I can't agree that most fatal accidents lead to major changes; usually the result is a small tweaking of the rules, or recommendations for a specific location. It's difficult to see what the best way round this is, but the present list is far too long and uncategorised to help someone new to the subject looking for key points. Any ideas for improvement? "1848 Australia first railway Sydney Railway Company (SRC), Australia's first, in 1848. Capitalised at £100,000, it aimed to build railways to connect the port and capital of Sydney with the colony's two main inland towns of Bathurst and Goulburn."

Although the SRC began work on the Sydney-Parramatta line in 1849, it did not open until 1855. The Melbourne-Sandridge line was Australia's first, opening in 1854. I refer you to [3].

Hi Slambo, an editor removed the example images used for the Pennsylvania Railroad. The reasoning is that the images were not PRR. While I can understand the reasoning, I felt that the images would help a reader understand the article section. Anywho, I just wanted to get your opinion. Wikipedia:Upload/Replace this image/Trains

I created Wikipedia:Upload/Replace this image/Trains and redirected Image:Project Trains no image.png to it, so that people don't assume they are supposed to replace the exact image. (What confusion that would cause!) I copied the Wikipedia:Upload/Replace_this_image page to do it, but wasn't sure how to word it properly for the project. To my understanding there are many avenues to contribute images provided they comply with the various rules and one does not exactly have to 'own' the image copyrights. I was hoping you could use your sysop know-how and better understanding of such rules to reword the page so that it better suits the project. (jumping in) I've been applying Image:Replace this imageb.svg, the Fromowner building placeholder, to articles on extant stations that lack images, and I think that should continue; as fixed structures, they should appear in a search for missing images of buildings. Rolling stock is the only other category of thing that might want a placeholder, and perhaps a better idea would be a generic "vehicle" template, for cars, planes, and boats as well as rolling stock, instead of a project-based placeholder. —CComMack (t–c) 19:59, 11 December 2007 (UTC)

Using an existing placeholder works for me too I just thought it would be nice to have a related image but never intended anyone to be expected to use it, if they choose to use it, it's there. Rail transport rolling stock placeholder would be nice too good idea! As for lumping everything into one 'vehicle' category that seems too large If every boat, bus, car, plane, truck and train were in one category. Besides keeping things in theme helps various projects seem somewhat uniform. At least in my opinion. Using a page the expresses (more like demands) "from owner" I fear will scare people away from contributing images. There are other avenues within the rules allowing editors to upload images they may not personally own, such as {{trainweb}} for one, or others such as fair use, Govt. archives, etc. that may also work within the rules. Not forgetting that allot of the images missing within the trains project may rely on these other avenues since many vehicles have been retired and scrapped so snapping a shot of one on the road just might not be possible, in this case image archives and pictures that 'others own' but are willing to share may be the only option. Which is why I would like a page that expresses this rather than turning people off by leading them to believe they must personally own the copyright. Modularizing a template

Do you know of an easy tutorial to make modularized templates? I've been trying to figure out how to do it with the loco-box. It's getting bigger, and bigger.. I'd like to take all of the auto-fields and put them each in their own module to shrink things down a bit. It would also make things easier for others to edit options in smaller modules.

Would you happen to have any info in your archives about the Catonsville and Ellicott City Electric railway? I put together an article Victor G Bloede, from what I have read he had a great deal to do with putting the railroad together. I'm not sure how much, or if he's qaulified to be part of the trains project. If you get a chance please take a look and let me know what you think. Betuweroute

Hi Slambo,

You rated the Betuweroute wiki in november, when it was an eyesore. I have nearly totally rewritten the limping thing. Athough much better now, there is still room for improvement, so reassessment could help to concentrate on high priority issues.

Being a newbee, I have not been eager to scrap work that is not mine, but do you think the list of municipalities should be scrapped? Converting it to a small table is the alternative option, but I would prefer the axe.

Madtown and trains

Hello there, Slambo. I found your userpage via the photo you took of the WORT studio. I write to you for three reasons:

1. I also live in Madison, and you're the first Wikipedian I've found in this area. Do you know of others? Would a gathering yield more than three people? Also, I've made a Madison userbox which perhaps you'd care to add to your 'page.
2. I wonder if there's any chance you knew my father. He was a big model railroader and railfan who was involved with the NMRA. His name was George Piotrowski and he lived in Gainesville, Florida until his death in 1992.
3. Your contributions to Wikipedia are remarkable. Kudos for your quality work, especially all those superb pictures.

CFDs

Hi Slambo -- I was going to notify you about the CFDs, but you've already found them & weighed in. The thinking is that it is usually much better to simply include award-winners in the article about the award. That way they can be cited, referenced, sorted, noted, and exclusions or inclusions can be policed. It also avoids problems with WP:OCAT#Award winners. Thanks for the bump reminder; I was out of town for the weekend. I very much appreciate your willingness to keep those who object informed and involved in a healthy discussion. I would still prefer the categories be kept, but my main concern that the information itself remains is addressed by keeping the list articles. I understand the reasoning behind the noms and cannot come up with anything that directly contradicts it, therefore I will not contest them further at this point (and I'm copying this sentiment there too so closing admins see that I was involved in the discussion again before closure). Comments on MKT page

I'm new here and just learning my way around. Today I was looking at page history and saw this from you

That isn't on the page anywhere, so I assume its some kind of comment. I don't know how this is done. I presume it is in response to my remark that numerous manufacturers make Katy locos and cars.

I have around 10 MKT locos in N, HO and O scales. These are made by Atlas, K-Line, Lionel, Walthers, and Mehano. I have somewhere around 50 Katy cars in the various scales made by those same manufacturers plus MTL, Intermountain, Roco, Trix, and one or two I can't recall.

I am very interested in revamping the list of named trains, as it has excellent information but I find it hard to use. I'd like to see it broken up into more, smaller pages. Does Wiki interface to an RDBMS? I have taught SQL for many years, and some institutions I have taught at have published my SQL book for my classes. I'd love to get that data into MySQL or Oracle.

Texas Special

The reason I said the Texas Special was popular is the volume of them available on ebay. People seem to be buying them. Of course you could argue that they are also unpopular because so many people are selling them.

What's interesting to me is that they are all in O Scale. I have only seen one N Scale Texas Special on ebay in the months that I have been watching. This was a Con-Cor limited edition from the 80s. I was fortunate enough to have the winning bid.

What surprises me is, with all the O Scale Texas Specials out there, I have never seen a steamer. If you ever come across one please let me know.

List of named passenger trains

I don't know if I mentioned, or if you noticed but I have created a Texas Special page and a Meteor (St. Louis-San Francisco Railway) page over the last couple of days.

In the course of doing this I noticed that the List of named passenger trains was very cumbersome to use.

I have taken the data from these pages and created a set of pages at User:Lownen/Named Trains which I would like to offer as replacements for the older pages.

I don't know what official submission process you have, and you are the only administrator I've had contact with. That's why I'm writing you about this.

The section on "The Ballad of Casey Jones" was moved (which is fine), but Andrews Palop put a rewrite tag on the article saying it sounded like a "dramatic novel," which I strongly disagree with and said so on the discussion page of the article. apostrophes for plurals

In some cases you do use apostrophes for plurals, depending on which style guide you follow - e.g., "Johnny got all A's except for one F on his report card" is correct Associated Press style - but you are correct about the incorrect plural in the Wilton Scenic Railroad article. - DavidWBrooks (talk) 20:32, 20 February 2008 (UTC)

Lake Forest (Metra) image correct?

You seem to have more contact with the Chicago arer railroad system than I do. Can you tell me if the image in the Lake Forest (Metra Union Pacific/North) is for the proper Lake Forest Metra station? Or does this belong in the Lake Forest (Metra Milwaukee District/North) station instead? Metra's website doesn't have images from all angles, so I don't know. I think I just found that I was right all along. A bicycle enthusiasts website for the Green Bay Bike Trail indicates that the image is for the correct Lake Forest station(http://www.about-bicycles.com/greenbay-mcclory-northshore/green-bay-trail-b004.jpg). BC Rail Electric Locomotives

Hi Slambo! I work at the Railway & Forestry Museum in Prince George, British Columbia and I happened upon your pictures of the BCOL series electrics being chopped up. You may not know, but our museum has the only remaining electric from the Tumbler sub, BCOL 6001. I would really like to get in touch with about those pictures and the electrics generally. Yes, the 6001 was spared the scrap pile, but only just barely. The reason I am looking for these pictures is because our Park Manager at PGRFM (also my boyfriend) passed on two weeks ago very suddenly. He was an engineer on the electrics for the entirety of their day. And he was responsible for finding a private investor for the 6001 hour, and retreiving her back for preservation at the Museum, where it still sits. Therefore he was also the last engineer to run the last electric. I am putting together information for Museum archives, and potentially a small writing about Tumbler and her electrics. If you would give me permission, I would love to use all of the pictures for this. The museum would be thrilled to have the pictures regardless. You can send them to me at wspearing@shaw.ca. I fixed the template for the sizes issue, but I'm now not so certain that was the correct fix. From the discussion on the Village Pump, previously the "px" could be either in the template or the article, or both. Now it cannot be in both, or it effectivelty defeats itself and it's as if it was in neither. But the question is, where should it be going forward? In the template, or in the articles? Removing it from the template was the quick solution for those articles where it was in the article, but now if any articles do not use the "px", *they* will be broken. So I'm wondering if it should be put back in the template, and removed from the articles. The Village Pump discussion appears to be setting up for major bot-clean-up runs, so if we get it right back in the template, we can hopefully catch one of these runs. Hi. Could you cast your eye over the {{transport}} template, please? It (mostly) prevents the inclusion of text to its left, which seriously screws the page layout. In most cases it has been relegated to the See also section, presumably to keep it out of the way. I tried moving it on rail transport, but the effect was still not right.
