Plácido Domingo discography

I haven’t been editing at Wikipedia lately and just saw the message you left on my talk page. I would be happy to explain my changes from a year and half ago. In addition to adding a lot more recordings and information, I rearranged the organization of the page to make it significantly more similar to average discographies on Wikipedia, especially the starred featured ones. There is a project on singer discographies where you can view many typical Wiki discographies and find out more about what is the norm:

Some good examples of standard, well-written Wikipedia discographies are Simon & Garfunkel discography, Nirvana discography, Phil Collins discography, The Beatles discography, and in the classical realm, Lang Lang discography.

The way the article had been organized previously was very unusual for a Wikipedia discography. Where reasonable, I generally believe in standardization across Wikipedia, rather than unnecessary uniqueness. I don’t remember ever seeing a “Christmas section” in a Wiki discography before, although perhaps one could justify it if that were the main thing that Domingo sings and the genre for which he is most famous--and even then it would be questionable in my opinion. That, however, is not even the case. (Bing Crosby’s discography doesn’t even have a special Christmas section, and he’s much more specifically known for Christmas music.) One could come up with many different genre categories for Domingo (some of which are a great deal more associated with him than Christmas music, i.e. Latin, pop, etc.), but there isn’t really a good reason to do something that unusual/out-of-place just for Domingo’s discography on Wikipedia. Wikipedia discographies normally divide recordings up by type of recording, not by the genre of the recording.

Of course, Domingo is an opera singer, so it did make sense to keep his full-opera/role recordings separate, especially since they are so different in format and content from most music albums. This had already been done on the Andrea Bocelli discography (the only other complete singer’s discography that I could find on Wikipedia that included both full opera recordings and popular music albums). In my opinion, it is also important in an extremely long discography not to have any sections overwhelmingly lengthy (it’s not user friendly), so I also used the customary studio/live category divisions for his full-length roles (that’s especially important in opera where the difference in quality between studio and live can be huge).

The categories I chose for the page organization (except for the very rarely applicable category of full operas/roles) are entirely standard on Wikipedia for discographies. The previous ones were not. The old version gave the initial place of honor on the page to filmed performances (even though the article is listed as a discography rather than a filmography), while the norm is to feature studio recordings at the top of the article. It also made no distinction between live and studio and new and previously released/compiled material, even though those divisions are usual on Wikipedia and in most discographies in general (and re-released material is often considered less significant than new recordings and sometimes not listed at all—it shouldn’t be given equal footing with his important, often popular or influential recordings of newly recorded music). Instead of the typical categories, it also had the seemingly arbitrary divisions of “solo, duet, trio” and “group performances,” something I’d never seen before in a discography.

I did regret not bringing it even more in line with the rest of Wikipedia, but I am glad I was able to do what I could for the article at the time. It’s true that most discographies on Wikipedia have chart info, but Domingo’s albums didn’t chart all that often and when they did, they made it onto a wide variety of different charts (making it hard to know which charts to list in the discography). I also didn’t really have the time to research all his albums that did chart, although I did for his more popular singles. Certification stats are found on most high-quality discographies on this site, and I was at least able to add that for each of his best-selling recordings, along with awards information, something seemingly quite relevant for this particular artist. Infoboxes are also normal on Wikipedia discographies (the project encourages them), and I simply tried to use the standard discography infobox categories. I do hope at some point to come back to the article and to improve, standardize, and correct the article much more thoroughly.

You can read what the differences between studio albums, compilations albums, and singles are here on Wikipedia. I used them in their most typical, popularly understood sense and do not know why you would find them particularly confusing. Studio albums are, of course, recorded in music studios rather than live and often refer to recordings that consist of all or mostly new material. Compilation albums contain mixtures from different previously recorded albums (usually just selected from various already released recordings, but occasionally with some unreleased material included too), and singles are individual songs released as separate recordings usually taken from full albums. Almost every complete, well-done discography on Wikipedia contains these album categories (at least when the artist has released each of these types of recordings). Of course, some albums may accidentally be in the wrong category, but that’s a different issue.

Thank you very much for all the work you did on the article a decade ago (and I know it is hard work that you did!), but I felt it was necessary and a real step forward to bring the article more into compliance with the rest of Wikipedia while filling in a lot of missing information. Cut/paste In taberna – In taberna quando sumus

Hi, and thank you for your contributions to Wikipedia. It appears that you tried to give In taberna a different title by copying its content and pasting either the same content, or an edited version of it, into In taberna quando sumus. This is known as a "cut-and-paste move", and it is undesirable because it splits the page history, which is legally required for attribution. Instead, the software used by Wikipedia has a feature that allows pages to be moved to a new title together with their edit history.

In most cases, once your account is four days old and has ten edits, you should be able to move an article yourself using the "Move" tab at the top of the page (the tab may be hidden in a dropdown menu for you). This both preserves the page history intact and automatically creates a redirect from the old title to the new. If you cannot perform a particular page move yourself this way (e.g. because a page already exists at the target title), please follow the instructions at requested moves to have it moved by someone else. Also, if there are any other pages that you moved by copying and pasting, even if it was a long time ago, please list them at Wikipedia:Requests for history merge. Rigoletto discography cast lists

Hi there! I basically agree with your removing the minor characters from the cast lists on the Rigoletto discography page. Just one thing: I think Monterone should be included. His role is small but VERY significant and often sung by very notable singers, including: Plinio Clabassi, Fernando Corena, Georg Hann, Ingvar Wixell, Samuel Ramey, Kurt Moll, and even (in his youth) Matti Salminen.

Opera side navbox

I understand that the opera side navboxes were not deleted to not distort the display of historic versions, but I don't believe that they have to be in present articles, really a duplication of the navbox in the position were readers would expect a navbox, - at the bottom. - If you feel you want to restore them, please remove the italic title template, - we don't ned both. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 09:13, 15 December 2019 (UTC)

Repeated links in discographies
