6-month block for IP

I'm not about to "badger" you for what you've posted at an RfA, but sometimes 6 month blocks are given to IP users, e.g. User_talk:63.138.40.98. Granted this one was more disruptive than the example in the RfA. VG 16:22, 1 October 2008 (UTC)

I think he's referring more to the "jump" from a week to 6 months. -- how do you turn this on 16:26, 1 October 2008 (UTC)
Yep, I'm aware, and have handed out some 6 month (and even 12 month) blocks myself, especially to school IPs, as in your above example. However, 6 months blocks usually only follow after a standard escalating 24h, 72h, 1 week, 1 month, 3 month cycle. A progressive escalation is typically how things are done. A 6 month block should rarely be handed to a dynamic IP (yes, cable modem IPs are "semi-permanent" in that most users leave their cable modems on all the time so they tend to keep the same IP for a long time - they are dynamic nonetheless and can be recycled at any time). hope this helps to explain. cheers –xeno (talk) 16:27, 1 October 2008 (UTC)
Good point. Thanks for the explanation. VG 16:43, 1 October 2008 (UTC)

Can you help me?

Can you help me with Salem Witch Trials information? (About people being crushed) Thanks, Gavin. --Sealim Man 19:46, 1 October 2008 (UTC)

Apparently 1 person was crushed to death because he refused to profess to being a witch. Perhaps try the reference desk? What is it that you need to know that isn't outlined in the article? –xeno (talk) 20:09, 1 October 2008 (UTC)

Hey, can you tell me why my talk page isn't archiving? Thanks!  Frank  |  talk  13:44, 2 October 2008 (UTC)

Miszabot's minthreads left paramater defaults to 5, it should probably archive at least one thread today... change it to 0 if you want your talk page to be completely harvested when the threads expire:
|minthreadsleft = 0
hope that helps. –xeno (talk) 13:46, 2 October 2008 (UTC)

Help please

Hi Xeno, hope you're well. I wanted to ask a quick question about the CURRENTTIME template. When I add it, yes it displays the right time. But it updates itself infrequently and frankly, that irritates me. Is there anything I can do about it? I have added it on my userpage, if you want to take a quick look at it. Eagerly awaiting your reply, Blooded Edge Sign/Talk 20:37, 3 October 2008 (UTC)

As far as I know the only way to do this would be to purge the cache of your page... First time or infrequent visitors to your page will usually be shown the correct time. For yourself, you could enable the clock gadget that will display the time in the top right and also when clicked on, purge the cache of the current page. –xeno (talk) 20:44, 3 October 2008 (UTC)

How exactly do I 'purge my cache'? Can you tell me where this button is located please? Blooded Edge Sign/Talk 20:56, 3 October 2008 (UTC)

See WP:Bypass your cache for browser-specific instructions. –xeno (talk) 21:03, 3 October 2008 (UTC)

Signature autoinclusion

Why did you do this? The signature function is now broken. Jennavecia (Talk) 02:55, 7 October 2008 (UTC)

Are you sure? Seems OK to me. J.delanoygabsadds 02:57, 7 October 2008 (UTC)

That's strange. As you'll notice here, it didn't work... unless it's an issue on my machine. :/ The same problem was occurring with Template:Welcome7, which I know isn't just me because others attempted to fix it before I figured out the problem.

anonwelcome

And with that, I just figured out the problem. Welcome7 redirects to Template:Welcomeg and anonwelcome redirects to Template:Welcome-anon. Anyone like me who has the old names in mind will end up with a broken template because, apparently, the sig function doesn't carry over redirect. That needs to be corrected. Jennavecia (Talk) 18:53, 9 October 2008 (UTC)
I believe it's because you're not substing the template... Which it really ought be... –xeno (talk) 18:56, 9 October 2008 (UTC)
*facepalm* You're right. I just figured it out when I was typing out a thing at VPT. I substed those, because I normally do, and it worked... so I was like wtf? Went back to the page I liked above to see what the difference was and I was like "Ahhhh, I forgot to subst it!" I am going to take a nap... I think I need more naps. Sigh. Thanks. Jennavecia (Talk) 19:06, 9 October 2008 (UTC)
We can all do with more naps, Jenna =) Sleep tight. –xeno (talk) 19:16, 9 October 2008 (UTC)

Transclusions of signatures

Hi Xenocidic. I've been working on subst: some transclusions into AfDs. See User:Suntag/AfD transclusions. I followed up a sock puppet account through User:Mr.Z-man/t1 to MfD:User subpages used to subvert Mediawiki limit on signatures. The sockpuppet's transcluded signature has been in the AfD since at least 10 February 2008. There also are other pages in which the sock's signature is transcluded. If transcluded signatures are forbidden, is there (shouldn't there be) a bot that adds subst: in front of signatures? -- Suntag 14:57, 6 October 2008 (UTC)

Hrm, if it's a major problem let me know and I can do a bot run, but for only a handful just subst and be on with it. –xenowiki (talk) 21:03, 12 October 2008 (UTC)

SO NOW, SO WoW - Fashion can be such a grind

So, being so inconveniently rich and everything, I decided to four new laptops in the hope that I could write them off my taxes, and possibly to see what would happen if I put them in the microwave. While putting a model together on the dell website, I couldn't help noticing the items on the "recommended accessories" page included a webcam, a USB hub, a pack of blank DVDs, and... World Of Warcraft. If I were less mentally stable I think I think I could be forgiven for thinking WoW was stalking me with a grudge. I spent three very unproductive months grinding my way through that grindtastic grindfest a while back, and its amazing how something so dementedly un-entertaining can draw you in. I see the damned game at every turn. World Of Warcraft free trial CDs are everywhere, fighting dogs, killing cats, biting babies in cradles...all you'd need to do is learn how to digest plastic and you'd never go hungry again. So, I set about emptying every CD rack I came across, thinking about creating a magnificent morning coat made out of WoW free trial CDs. I pictured myself on the streets of London making millions. Regrettably the project never got that far. After gathering all the free trial CDs into a pile, the sheer weight of concentrated grind in a single place created a grind vortex that reduced the furniture to sawdust in seconds. Only two CDs remained which I considered stringing together in a G-string arrangement, but I thought wearing that along the streets of London would give the wrong message so I set the microwave to full power and found that there really is a way to make World Of Warcraft entertaining after all. Talk About this on this talk or my talk. Thanks SupaRebel35 (talk) 00:24, 9 October 2008 (UTC)

It is like they are wasting their time over there like roaming around, killing others and riding on creatures. In my POV that game should disappear. I also think MMO is killing PC games. --SkyWalker (talk) 14:06, 9 October 2008 (UTC)

Skywalker- yes i still play WoW seeing as I have somehow avoided the temptation to fall of the grind boat. and i guess thats it. look for my next article called Get A Job. SupaRebel35 (talk) 00:10, 12 October 2008 (UTC)

GET A JOB - Apparently, Playing Fable 2 Will Qualify

Peter Molyneux is, by all accounts, a really nice man. people watch him walk down the street and say "there goes the really nice man", and then they'll maybe yell something about how Black and white 2 sucked a fat one, but peter forgives them because hes so nice. but fable 2, is some what the same. It is so time consuming it could be a full time job with no pay.(remind you of school, much?) but i had a few ideas for it: -a quicktime minigame event in which you try to aviod making conversation with the weird guy who works just across from you -a climatic showdown with a giant dragon that can be avoided by helping him fill out his tax return -an on screen indicator showing how much time you've played and a ticker listing more fulfilling ways you could of used the time. even so its not even out yet and i can already say "it sucked a fat one". AAU reminder notice

A friendly reminder from the Adopt-a-User project =)

Hey there Xenocidic! This is a friendly reminder to update your status at Wikipedia:Adopt-a-User/Adoptee's Area/Adopters whenever it is appropriate in order to provide new users with the most up-to-date information on available adopters. Also please note that we will be removing adopters who have not edited in 60 days. If you become active again (and we hope you do!) please feel free to re-add yourself. Cheers!
So what is this message all about. Doesn't make much sense to me. It refers to a page that doesn't need updating on a frequent basis, and I don't have time anyway. Why does the message say "become active again", I am active? Why does the message say "please feel free to re-add yourself", I'm still on it!? mystified. :: Kevinalewis : (Talk Page)/(Desk) 14:51, 8 October 2008 (UTC)
The "re-add yourself" is for those we've removed for 60 days of inactivity (the preceding sentence). If your status is the same, then great - no action is required. If you don't have time for adopting users, then remove yourself. if you would like to see the motivation for this message, see Wikipedia_talk:AAU#Update. cheers, –xeno (talk) 14:53, 8 October 2008 (UTC)
I got ths message too and I'm not inactive, I edited earlier today. There's no need for it to send this out unless the user is inactive- it just makes people go to the adopter's area thinking there's something they forgot to do and not finding anything, and think they're going to be signed off if they don't do whatever it is. It needlessly toys with people's minds.:) You could include a line saying "if nothing has changed, you are still active and wanting to adopt, please ignore this message.' As you can see, I was not the only one slightly confused by it.Sticky Parkin 16:34, 8 October 2008 (UTC)
Hrm, sorry about that, I'll keep that in mind if we send a similar message in the future. For what it's worth, we are having a handful of people update their status to more accurately reflect their current activity levels which was one of the goals of this blast. –xeno (talk) 16:47, 8 October 2008 (UTC)

Ho-Chunk mythology

I am the foremost expert in the world on Ho-Chunk mythology, at least outside this N. American Indian tribe. There was a stub on this subject that had a short re-written excerpt from my website, so it occurred to me that since there was essentially nothing there, I could perform a service by writing an overview of Ho-Chunk mythology. I had spent three days carefully writing the first three sections of this with an enormous number of footnotes, when some hobbledehoy put in a section extolling the garbage-like ideas of my bitterest academic enemies. Fortunately, only a very small fraction of what I was going to write was entered. I assumed that if this outsider wanted to intrude in the middle of my project, that it would be alright to remove my part of the contribution and give him free rein to do whatever it was that he wanted in pursuing his competing thesis. It makes no sense to me to have a highly scholarly article riddled with severe inconsistencies. That I can't remove my very own contribution is infuriating.

However, the good news is that my lawyer thinks that I have a good position on this. I took material out of my copyrighted website with the thought that at some point I could say, "reproduced by permission of the author". However, I hadn't yet gotten around to that when my article was destroyed by an ignoramus intruder. That means that almost all of it violates my own copyright. Therefore, under the present circumstances, I not only may withdraw it, but I must withdraw it according to your own rules. I resisted these attempts to force me to surrender my writing to the encyclopedia by every means that I could think of. Except one, of course: a lawsuit for copyright infringement.

I'll make you a deal. I'll accept banishment gladly if you will return to me my own writing out of this STUB (!).

Please contact me by my own email, as this site is pure chaos to me, and I don't think that I will be able to find your response otherwise.

Where are we with this editor? Part of the problem is that he doesn't understand our policy on OR, and is treating articles as though they were essays, and when people revert his OR he doesn't understand why and gets upset. Here of course he doesn't realise he's donated his work to Wikipedia. Somewhere yesterday I read of two other editors who were also trying to remove work that they had added to articles and hadn't understood the GFDL. Doug Weller (talk) 05:45, 12 October 2008 (UTC)
I think that he could be a valuable contributor, but he needs to be explained how things work: both the bit about NOR and also the fact that it's a collaborative project. As far as I can tell, he was originally miffed when someone added a section he didn't like to the Hochunk article linked above. As far as his contributions he wants to withdraw, I believe we left it in a reverted state but as far as MGodwin is concerned, the material can be re-used... (See the AN: Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/Archive172#Ho-Chunk mythology) –xeno (talk) 12:04, 12 October 2008 (UTC)
Thanks, I should have looked more carefully. Check your email. Doug Weller (talk) 12:20, 12 October 2008 (UTC)
He is still editing (with at least one footnote that is his own OR), but has deleted his web encyclopedia. He is not a happy bunny. Doug Weller (talk) 16:28, 14 October 2008 (UTC)
confused face... why would he do that? –xeno (talk) 17:05, 14 October 2008 (UTC)
I'm not sure. Allegedly to make it impossible to use as a source, but what is left on his website says "The Hochunks (Winnebago) have been opposed to this site from day one, and as to academics, my personal standing in the field can be set at zero.". He's just emailed me calling me names for removing some stuff he added by Radin, but all I did was remove the word Pawnee twice and some punctuation changes. I suggested he might have had an edit conflict and not noticed it, I've lost at least one edit that way. Doug Weller (talk) 17:46, 14 October 2008 (UTC)
Thanks for going and checking out the situation. I've personally been avoiding wiki for the last few days, things to do in the real world, plus I felt like I was getting too invested in a situation with Mr. Dieterle that I really had no stake in. Apart from his attitude, name calling, and refusal to have a dialogue here, I got snippy emails from him too. I'd been controlling my irritation fairly well up til then, but have decided to pull back for awhile and let more experienced and leveler heads deal with him. I hope y'all don't mind and feel like I've dumped him at your figurative doorsteps, I just don't know if I could keep being civil to the gentleman. Hope you have better luck with him than I did and thanks again! Heironymous Rowe (talk) 17:05, 16 October 2008 (UTC)

non-violent FPS

Hi Xeno, I'm still working on the article I mentioned to you, but I have a ways to go. Perhaps I'm being too ambitious. Anyway I'll probably work on this on and off for the next week as I'm very busy outside of wiki right now and I have almost no time this weekend, but if you're curious there's a very rough start to the article in my sandbox. Anyway, I also wanted to let you know that while I do disapprove of some of your arguments, and we do appear to be deadlocked in the various discussions, I firmly believe that you are acting in good faith and I respect your intentions. I hope there will be no hard feelings if I have to go to Arbcom with the dispute. -Thibbs (talk) 21:41, 8 October 2008 (UTC)

There would be no hard feelings but I do believe it would be rejected as premature: we haven't even really had many outside opinions from WPVG yet and there are other steps in dispute resolution that can be explored. best of luck with the article, I do think it's something that's needed. cheers, –xeno (talk) 21:59, 8 October 2008 (UTC)

Hey I never gave you permission to edit my sandbox! No, but it's fine. I certainly would have given you permission had you asked, and I approve of your changes anyway. I may ask you to take a swing at more changes in the future (when I put it into mainspace) because I've wasted far too much time on this whole thing and I need to get back to my normal life. Anyway, pity about the CfD (from my perspective), but considering the category has twice been created by unrelated editors, I'm sure this isn't the last we've heard on the subject. Also, I appreciated your efforts to compromise. Cheers, -Thibbs (talk) 13:57, 14 October 2008 (UTC)

heh, i figured in asking me to look at it you would also welcome changes... I haven't had a time to thoroughly read through it, I'll try and do that over the next few days and improve it where I can. after that we can split the history when it's moved into the mainspace to eliminate the stuff before you started the article. Near the end of the CFD your arguments swayed me towards the proposed compromise, but after Good Olfactory pointed out that line from WP:CLN, I can't say I disagree with his closure from a guideline perspective. –xeno (talk) 14:04, 14 October 2008 (UTC)

Just to let you know, I've moved "Nonviolent video game" out of my sandbox and into mainspace now. Feel free to make improvements as you see fit if you wish. I'll be too busy for the next few weeks to be of much help, but I'll keep it on my watch list and I'll check in periodically. Thanks in advance for whatever you can do. -Thibbs (talk) 19:02, 14 October 2008 (UTC)

Cool, will do. In future make sure that you actually move the article, rather than copying & pasting it into the mainspace - especially if others have made GFDL-significant contributions. Admins can help with splitting the history if there's other sandboxy stuff that wouldn't belong in the article history. I've gone ahead and done this for you. I'll do my best to help out with it over the next couple days. cheers, –xeno (talk) 19:28, 14 October 2008 (UTC)

Thank you

Thanks so much for the barnstar. I've never received one before though I've been here for years. I really appreciate it. The article was not pre-written, I just am not a big fan of the work I'm supposed to be doing off-wiki... So this was one giant act of procrastination. I almost wish I had more will-power to avoid the addiction that is Wikipedia. :) Anyway thanks again. -Thibbs (talk) 14:36, 16 October 2008 (UTC)

No problem. And, wow. That's a huge feat of writing in that case and the barnstar is well-deserved. Keep it up, and hope there are no hard feelings about our difference of opinions. best, –xeno (talk) 14:39, 16 October 2008 (UTC)
Oh no. No hard feelings at all. -Thibbs (talk) 16:26, 16 October 2008 (UTC)

Help with templates

I was told you could help me with this: "Is it possible for me to have template:a transclude tags into template:b, so that they are not included into template:b, but not the final article?" ~ 10nitro (talk) 20:08, 9 October 2008 (UTC)

Can you help me out with an example of what you're trying to accomplish? –xeno (talk) 20:13, 9 October 2008 (UTC)
I want to need to create many templates like:

<noinclude>
PAGENAME/doc</noinclude>

So, I want to create a template to make a simple template to use in those, that will be as easy as "" that I can put in all the others. ~ 10nitro (talk) 20:45, 9 October 2008 (UTC)
Sorry I'm really drawing a blank on this one I still don't understand, can you give me a precise example? I think what you want to do can be taken care of with switches but I'm not sure. –xeno (talk) 20:57, 9 October 2008 (UTC)
I want it so that if start editing "template:a" (just as an example), and type:

then afterwards the source of "template:a" will be:

<noinclude>
PAGENAME/doc</noinclude>

The tricky part of this is getting the "<noinclude>" tags to be generated in the final "template:a" ~ 10nitro (talk) 21:25, 9 October 2008 (UTC)
Now I get it... Try breaking up the noinclude tags as follows

<includeonly><no</includeonly><includeonly>include></includeonly>Blah blah<includeonly></no</includeonly><includeonly>include></includeonly>

That should work. The "Blah blah" bit is what will be wrapped in no include tags when substed. –xeno (talk) 22:17, 9 October 2008 (UTC)
Thanks!, I think I got it to work! ~ 10nitro (talk) 23:00, 9 October 2008 (UTC)
edit: no, wait, it works when I subst it, but not when I just transclude it... which needs to work (I made that unclear) ~ 10nitro (talk) 23:13, 9 October 2008 (UTC)
This might not be possible... I had a similar conundrum a few weeks back. I'm going to ask Thingg, he's really good with these stumpers. –xeno (talk) 00:12, 10 October 2008 (UTC)
I've only got a little time to edit right now (got to get to bed...). I've got two hours tomorrow free between classes. Do you mind if I work on it then? Thingg 03:34, 10 October 2008 (UTC)

I think I figured it out. Typing produces this (minus the level two header). I think that is the code you were looking for.

See also, User:J.delanoy/2 and User:J.delanoy/1. You need both of those as well, or it won't work. J.delanoygabsadds 04:09, 10 October 2008 (UTC)

Actually, I don't think you can do it without subst:ing it because MediaWiki parses the psuedo-html tags at the wrong time (ie: before it starts displaying the template's code on the page). This causes anything that is included in the "magic tags" to be treated as plain text when you simply transclude the template instead of subst:ing it (kind of the same way the "four tildes magic" works when you subst: the welcome templates, but it doesn't work when you merely transclude them). Unfortunately, I think this is another one of those cases where you can't get around it unless you make an extension to allow you to affect the way MediaWiki parses templates (and you can't do that here :( ). Sorry man. At least it still work when you subst: it... Thingg 15:31, 10 October 2008 (UTC)
That's what I suspected. cheers Thingg. –xeno (talk) 15:32, 10 October 2008 (UTC)

Hrm, apologies, but I'm not comfortable recreating this material either on-wiki or off. It contains potentially sensitive personal information and probably violates decency laws of some jurisdictions. –xeno (talk) 14:50, 10 October 2008 (UTC)

User:Be Black Hole Sun

FYI, whatever the compromised nature of this account, this might be of interest to you. Cheers. --Rodhullandemu 15:18, 10 October 2008 (UTC)

Hrm, yes,.. The only thing that leads me to believe it may be his brother is because he was chugging along happily, delivering newsletters, and there was no stressors (as far as I can see) and suddently he retires and wikicides? Confusing! Not to say one can be excused for having their account compromised, but... –xeno (talk) 15:29, 10 October 2008 (UTC)
I may believe that, but if the guy already operates sockpuppets we have no way of knowing whether the brother story is true either. I think your advice for him to email en#unblock is probably the right move here and if he can persuade an uninvolved admin that his account was compromised and he has now changed his password, that would be a start. The problem is that certainly Firefox caches passwords, so we may be no further forward. Meanwhile, I've blocked the socks with no access to talk page on the basis of the history, so email is now his only way out. --Rodhullandemu 15:35, 10 October 2008 (UTC)
Well I guess there's a question as to whether they're "socks" or "legitimate alt accounts", but yes, the list seems to be the best way to go about it pleading his case. –xeno (talk) 15:39, 10 October 2008 (UTC)

Yo Xeno. I've worked with BBHS on a number of articles and he has been a very valuable contributor to FL/GA and the like. He appears to be a non-Anglo teenager with behavioural problems, but has done a lot of good faith work. In the case that he wants to leave Wikipedia permanently, or wants to vandalise it, the userpage block will not help much - in the former case for obvious reasons, and in the latter case he will just use a sock account. There is a possibility that the account is compromised/it was a temporary temper tantrum, and in that case I think allowing him to edit his usertalk on his return would leave the situation open to reconciliation. BBHS has not the temperment to grovel on a mailing list, I think. The worst case scenario of allowing him to edit his usertalk is a stream of FUCKFUCKFUCK WIKIPEDIA ARGH. I ask that you consider it. Petty vandalism is a small price to pay for potentially restoring a valuable contributor. Mahalo, the skomorokh 16:58, 10 October 2008 (UTC)

After I uncovered the potential of the compromised account I thought of tweaking it back, and this confirms that, so,   Done. cheers, –xeno (talk) 17:18, 10 October 2008 (UTC)
I think that makes sense, but still leaves the sock/alternate accounts; it appears they are SUL accounts anyway, but both have been used for editing. If an unblock request is successful, there's no reason for these to stay blocked, as long as they are used legitimately. --Rodhullandemu 17:25, 10 October 2008 (UTC)
Right, from the thread you linked about they were seemingly used on accident, as long as there's no collusion between the accounts they could be unblocked. –xeno (talk) 17:27, 10 October 2008 (UTC)
[ec] Thanks very much for your consideration Xeno. I'm not vouching for BBHS, but it's possible this could work out. In any case I think a checkuser/some other IP investigation is certainly in order, if there is not one underway already. 17:28, 10 October 2008 (UTC)—Preceding unsigned comment added by Skomorokh (talkcontribs)
no problem. though, if the brother thing is true then checkuser would only reveal they're in the same household. =) it wouldn't be able to verify if it's actually the brother or the guy "going a little loopy" and doing some vandalism. –xeno (talk) 17:40, 10 October 2008 (UTC)
I am not a great subscriber to the brother theory; it seems from the same stable as "dog ate my homework". I was thinking more along these lines. If a former sockmaster goes on a vandal spree, there may be unblocked sock accounts lying around. BBHS, and all his brothers, should be restricted to User talk:BBHS, I think. the skomorokh 17:46, 10 October 2008 (UTC)
ah gotcha... well it seems he used up his 2nd chance? –xeno (talk) 17:51, 10 October 2008 (UTC)

Adopt a user status updates

Hi, I noticed you had a bot send out requests to update adopter status to editors on the adopt-a-user adopters list. I also happened to notice that it missed at least one adopter from the list. I don't know how the bot works exactly, but I'm guessing it skipped him because User:Diligent Terrier has a bunch of formatting around his name on that list. That is just speculation on my part though. Full disclosure: about a month ago I asked him to change his status on the adoption page. That's why I noticed when he didn't get your note. I don't know if others were missed too. best, axschme (talk) 22:29, 11 October 2008 (UTC)

Oh, No Problemo. I have asked Tanthalas 39. Btw do you write anymore articles or are you busy with admin backlogs?. --SkyWalker (talk) 18:24, 22 October 2008 (UTC)
Mostly just gnomish stuff these days... I'm rarely fast enough to start articles anymore, and I never really finished em either =) –xeno (talk) 18:24, 22 October 2008 (UTC)
Oh, It is sad that many good editor when to join has admin and all they do is admin tasks rarely any one writes articles. Wikipedia has a encyclopedia needs a lot of FA articles.--SkyWalker (talk) 18:30, 22 October 2008 (UTC) .
I was never really that great an article writer, to be honest =) I wiki while I'm at work and I can't concentrate very strongly on tasks. –xeno (talk) 18:31, 22 October 2008 (UTC)
Me too, Iam not good at writing article. I wish i could be. Mostly i do small task like removing dead link, adding tables, adding references and so. Btw i was about to get my first ban yesterday :P.--SkyWalker (talk) 10:34, 24 October 2008 (UTC)
IAR'd to unprotect the article and implement the change. –xeno (talk) 18:38, 22 October 2008 (UTC)
Thanks, What is IAR'd?.--SkyWalker (talk) 10:34, 24 October 2008 (UTC)
Ignored all rules =) –xeno (talk) 12:31, 24 October 2008 (UTC)

Can you do histmerge from The Lord of the Rings: The Battle for Middle-earth II: The Rise of the Witch King to The Lord of the Rings: The Battle for Middle-earth II: The Rise of the Witch-king. The latter is the correct name. --SkyWalker (talk) 06:23, 24 October 2008 (UTC)

Hrm, cheers. I typically advise my adoptees against simulating Mediawiki interfaces, or if they must, not making the message exactly the same as it would be in a "real" new messages situation. –xeno (talk) 12:22, 24 October 2008 (UTC)
Okey. No issues.I just wanted Renaulte to talk to BEdge before removing it himself a bit rudely. Many people wont find it otherwise amusing. -- Tinu Cherian - 14:21, 24 October 2008 (UTC)
Yea, a note on the talk page usually works best. –xeno (talk) 14:27, 24 October 2008 (UTC)
It is so RUDE?--E Renault Talk + 10:49, 26 October 2008 (UTC)
Renaulte,...It is not really but In general it is considered polite to avoid editing another's user page without their permission ( altough the user doesnt OWN their page) . Some users are fine with their user pages being edited, and may even have a note to that effect. Other users may object and ask you not to edit their user pages, and it is probably sensible to respect their requests. The best option is to draw their attention to the matter on their talk page and let them edit their user page themselves if they agree on a need to do so. In some cases a more experienced editor may make a non-trivial edit to your userpage, in which case that editor should leave a note on your talk page explaining why this was done. -- Tinu Cherian - 04:19, 27 October 2008 (UTC)

Deletion of Lateral Link article

request tidied here by the skomorokh 20:32, 24 October 2008 (UTC)

Hi, My wikipedia entry was recently deleted. Can you please give me a copy of my entry on Lateral Link? I would like to work on making it acceptable to all of the inclusion criteria.

Thank you, LegalB123 —Preceding unsigned comment added by LegalB123 (talkcontribs) 20:29, 24 October 2008 (UTC)

Hi, I found you through a list of users that can relocated deleted pages. Can you please provide me with a copy of my Lateral Link entry? I would like to continue working on it so that it fulfills the criteria for inclusion.

LegalB123 (talk) 20:30, 24 October 2008 (UTC)LegalB123

My reply here.

Thank you for responding to my questions regarding the location of my deleted article, Lateral Link. I will be working on it to make it neutral. I have read the inclusion criteria and would really appreciate your help in helping me make the entry satisfy the criteria.

I would like to get help on what specific aspects of the entry make it seem like an advertisement. I look forward to hearing from you soon.

In terms of the logo, it is GFDL as I have received permission to give wikipedia free access to the logo. Thanks for pointing that out and making sure I was following the rules regarding images.

Thank you so much for your help. LegalB123 (talk) 15:41, 27 October 2008 (UTC)LegalB123

Unfortunately I don't believe that this company satisfies our criteria for inclusion, see WP:COMPANY. Particularly the fact that it has not been the subject of significant coverage in reliable, independent secondary sources. If you do have some reliable sources to assert its notability with, please provide me the links and I will let you know if I feel that this article would survive. Also, chopping the company directory would be a good first step. Writing from a neutral point of view to attempt to eliminate any conflict of interests is another thing to keep in mind. –xeno (talk) 15:56, 27 October 2008 (UTC)

_______________________________________________________________ Thank you so much for your advice. I am a longtime fan of wikipedia and have only recently decided to write an article and am trying to learn how to structure an article properly. I will consult the inclusion criteria and the other links that you have provided to make the Lateral Link article better. I am currently making changes to the copy of the deleted article and will be sending you a link to the revised version soon. I am planning to completely delete some of the information as well as substantiate it with more reliable, independent secondary sources. I do have a question on how to add the sources though. One of the articles that I found I could only locate through looking at the company's website, yet it was an article in the Daily Journal. Should I just leave the link or should I just delete it?

Your help is much appreciated, LegalB123 (talk) 16:02, 2 November 2008 (UTC)LegalB123

If an article did occur in print media (newspaper) but you can't find it online it can still be used as a source as long as the title, page, date, author and publication name are given. See cite news for a citation template. –xeno (talk) 17:17, 2 November 2008 (UTC)

So Sue Me

But I need your help again. Hey, it's your fault you are the one who welcomed me. I can't move the article I just developed at User:DavidWS/Net Nanny to Net Nanny because it is currently a redirect page. Could you delete it for me so I could move the page to Net Nanny? Thanks, DavidWS (talk) 00:02, 28 October 2008 (UTC)

  Donexeno (talk) 00:33, 28 October 2008 (UTC)

Hmm

It appears Huggle essentially already has that functionality if you log into Huggle as a sysop. It doesn't constantly monitor AIV, but you can block users through it. Think it's still worth it? DavidWS (talk) 20:31, 28 October 2008 (UTC)

Well, the way huggle does the blocking is whilst patrolling vandalism... An AIV console would be better in that you don't have to patrol recent changes to block. Also huggle doesn't work for me at work =) –xeno (talk) 20:32, 28 October 2008 (UTC)
Okay, I'll use the Huggle block form and libraries to do it though, so I'm not really sure if it'll work for you. The other option (which could also work well) would be making a userscript partially based off of twinkle and morebits. I'll think about it. Cheers, DavidWS (talk) 20:38, 28 October 2008 (UTC)
huggle seems to die on login for me, so dunno. –xeno (talk) 20:41, 28 October 2008 (UTC)
My only other issue is that I am not a sysop, so I'd have to test it locally. I am unsure if a vanilla install of wikipedia will act the same as wikipedia. DavidWS (talk) 20:43, 28 October 2008 (UTC)
Woot! I had a "woohoo, I figured out how I'm going to program this f-ing thing" type moment. I'm going to make it cross-platform too. I completely forgot about the mediawiki API, this'll be really easy. I'll use PHP-GTK so it'll run on linux windows and mac. DavidWS (talk) 21:21, 28 October 2008 (UTC)
Just figured I'd let you know I've made a lot of progress. Decided to write it in VB to make it lightweight and so it'll run in wine easily (.NET won't do that). I didn't really want to do it in PHP because it'd be to complicated to install. I'll send it to you when I'm done. DavidWS (talk) 19:51, 30 October 2008 (UTC)
Awesome. I'm looking forward to it, I've really been slacking on my AIV patrol. –xeno (talk) 20:04, 30 October 2008 (UTC)
Also, one question. When you block a user, does a bot automatically remove it from the AIV page, or do you need to signal somehow to the bot that the user was block (EG writing a userblocked template or something) DavidWS (talk) 20:26, 30 October 2008 (UTC)
The bot removes it automagically... –xeno (talk) 20:27, 30 October 2008 (UTC)

I ought to be able to do that later, first I'm getting the main app done. DavidWS (talk) 21:05, 30 October 2008 (UTC)

For sure. Just thought I'd record my brilliant idea before it went away =) –xeno (talk) 21:08, 30 October 2008 (UTC)
Okay, so, theoretically it should work right now. However, I'm not sure if I implemented the block system quite right since I can't really test it (not a sysop, obviously). Want to give it a spin? DavidWS (talk) 21:40, 30 October 2008 (UTC)
Sure... you can email it to xenowiki at gmail dot com if you like. –xeno (talk) 21:55, 30 October 2008 (UTC)

Hi Xeno, can you move Scylla (Prison Break episode) to Scylla (Prison Break) which happens to be a redirect back to the first one as is the standard now. Thanks LegoKontribsTalkM 04:19, 29 October 2008 (UTC)

Another month, another newsletter

Hey Xeno, can you push out a WPNJ newsletter when you get a chance? The latest issue is at Wikipedia:WikiProject New Jersey/Newsletter/20081029 and the member list is at Wikipedia:WikiProject New Jersey/Newsletter/Signup. Please remember to add the |collapsed parameter to the subst. Thanks. Jim Miller See me | Touch me 12:18, 30 October 2008 (UTC)

Doing...... Don't forget to add this code to future newsletters, just to save me an edit =) (Being forgetful, I have to look it up every time to remember what to do ;>). –xeno (talk) 13:25, 30 October 2008 (UTC)
Oddly, that code is in the template I have been using but it seems to disappear during the subst to start a new issue. Any idea why that would happen? Really, I should figure out how to change the default so that I can expand it when needed (like on the project newsletter page), and leave it collapsed the rest of the time. Jim Miller See me | Touch me 13:37, 30 October 2008 (UTC)
It is in the subst'ing that the wrapping goes away, because the it parses it for a param... There's probably a way to fix it, but I finish my coffee and wake up first =) Same goes for helping you figure out that collapsing issue ;> Delivering is   Done, btw. –xeno (talk) 13:42, 30 October 2008 (UTC)

Hope you don't mind if I tag along on this thread. The October VG newsletter is hot off the presses and ready for delivery at your earliest convenience. (Guyinblack25 talk 15:51, 5 November 2008 (UTC))

Yo, stalkers

Can anyone direct me at a project dealing with elected officials, in view of Election Day (United States) coming up next week? We certainly have plenty of folks who are going to be newly elected or re-elected, and I'm wondering if there are guidelines for "representative-elect" or "senator-elect" and placing infoboxes, etc. I'm thinking of Marcia Fudge at the moment, but there are plenty of others, of course.  Frank  |  talk  00:43, 31 October 2008 (UTC)

script

Xeno, the script already makes dates consistent (that is, within the main text and tables, but of course can't deal with those dreadful citation templates). A script can come along after a bot, by the request of editors, to correct the global choice of date format or inconsistencies within it. I even have a request page for such.

I've never used a bot, because—irritatingly—AWB is made for Windows alone. Tony (talk) 02:07, 31 October 2008 (UTC)

If you want the monobook script that Tony uses, just add:
importScript('User:Lightmouse/monobook.js/script.js');
to the bottom of User:Xenocidic/monobook.js. Then clear your cache using the instructions (Ctrl-Shift-R in Firefox). When you are in edit mode, you will see 'Delink dates to dmy' and 'Delink dates to mdy' in blue text at the left of the page below 'What links here'. That will do what you want in just one click. Let us know how you get on. Lightmouse (talk) 11:26, 31 October 2008 (UTC)
Thanks, I will test this out when I get a chance. –xeno (talk) 14:27, 31 October 2008 (UTC)

You are welcome. Despite our robust debate elsewhere, I am happy to help you get this tool working. Lightmouse (talk) 16:39, 31 October 2008 (UTC)
