Wikipedia British Library - Royal Manuscripts collaboration

As part of the main BL project, this focuses on the Royal Collection of manuscripts and the associated "Royal Manuscripts: The Genius of Illumination" exhibition in 2011-12.

Fifty "highlights" from the exhibition are being digitised, and will be made available online (the first group probably in June 2012); the most interesting of these are listed in the want list below. The BL have kindly donated a copy of the exhibition catalogue to WMUK for use as a source, currently held by Johnbod; please let him know if you want to use this. Also a useful resource: the exhibition blog and the detailed Catalogue of Illuminated Manuscripts (with some images).

2012 digitisations

First set being digitised (publication date TBD, but relatively soon). Not all of these are notable enough for articles on the manuscript as an artifact, but several - eg the Estoire del Saint Graal - may still represent notable works.

Tour on January 17, 2012

The tour was highly enjoyable; thanks again to Kathleen Doyle, who took us round in the end!

Prequel

There will be another GLAM-related event in London the same afternoon, at the Royal Society [1] on Carlton House Terrace. This will be at 3.30 pm, a visit to a small exhibition "Many Hands"[2] (of interest to the British Museum Ice Age people, in theory - there may only be two relevant exhibits). Some of us will be there, making our way to the British Library for 5ish, where we'll have something in cups and a chat. The exhibition is not drop-in, but by prearranged tour, so please sign up if you are coming.

Tour of the exhibition

Tuesday, January 17th, 6 p.m. We plan to have a tour of the exhibition for about an hour in two groups, guided by Joanna Fronska and Sarah Biggs, curators for the exhibition, followed by a brief session to discuss who can do what, before moving to a pub around 7.30. For a nice change, an event that working stiffs can also attend!

If interested, please sign below. All editors are welcome, but if we become over-subscribed (doesn't look likely at the moment), priority may be given to those with a record of participation in terms of writing articles or other things, but please express your interest anyway. Also please let me (Johnbod) know if you wish to borrow the catalogue to use as a source.
