Ballantine Brewery

edit

I would like to add info to your Ballantine Brewery article. How do I go about doing it? Alex Partyka [details removed] — Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.179.78.161 (talk) 00:13, 19 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

If you think you can improve an article, you are welcome to edit the article. But please be aware that information in an article is supposed to be referenced to reliable sources: personal knowledge or original research are not acceptable; and that all articles should be written from a neutral point of view. Don't worry about making mistakes, but please don't get upset if other editors disagree with your changes and revert them. If you are not confident about editing the article yourself, you can start a discussion at its talk page (Talk:Ballantine Brewery). --ColinFine (talk) 00:20, 19 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Requesting changing of duration of a page protect?

edit

I want to request/discuss changing the protection duration on an article. Where is the best place to do so? - Purplewowies (talk) 04:47, 19 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Start at WP:RFPP RudolfRed (talk) 04:54, 19 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Can you give more specific instructions? I asked there, but it was declined as "already protected" even though that wasn't quite what I was asking. - Purplewowies (talk) 08:07, 19 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Try leaving a message at User talk:Gfoley4? -- John of Reading (talk) 08:15, 19 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
That's a good idea. You might also need to wait until the current protection expires and see if the problems that caused the protection in the first place start up again. RudolfRed (talk) 17:08, 19 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I just didn't think it would take an entire year for the events that caused the latest vandalism problem (a controversial Tumblr deletion that happened two days ago) to die down, and beyond the vandalism that happened in relation to the Tumblr issue, I really don't think there's enough vandalism of the article to warrant protection (which is why I was interested in discussing a reduction in the length of it). - Purplewowies (talk) 22:43, 19 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

User Talk page archive

edit

I've set up archives for my talk page manually, and have created 3 archives. I've used the {{archives}} tag and the archive files that I numbered 1 and 2 have appeared in the searchable archive box at the top of my talk page. However, the last archive file I created User talk:DeCausa/Archive 3 hasn't appeared, although it clearly exists. I've obviously done something quite basic wrong, but I can't see what. Could someone take a look at it. Thanks. DeCausa (talk) 13:20, 19 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Interwiki bots

edit

simple:The Statesman is an article about a newspaper (the same as our The Statesman article), but Wikipedias in many languages had interwiki links to it from their article on statesman. I removed the link from fr:Homme d'État some time back, but a bot came around and restored it. How to prevent this happening again? Yesterday I removed it from the "statesman" article on all of the Wikipedias I could find (af, cs, cy, de, en, es, fr, gd, hr, it, he, lt, mk, nl, nn, no, pl, pt, ro, ru, sl, su, fi, sv, th, tr, uk, war, and zh), but I'm not sure — will removing all of these links be enough to prevent the interwiki bots from restoring them? As the naming of Category:Visitor attractions in Wrocław is openly aiming at tourist attraction it is completely against Wikipedia basic rules. It should immediately be renamed - analogue to comparable cats - to Category:Cultur in Wrocław. I'd do it if there are no serious objections. -- Justus Nussbaum (talk) 14:06, 19 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I object to an immediate change, but am quite willing to see a formal reconsideration. There are a *massive* number of categories using that naming. See Category:Visitor attractions by city and its subcategories for what appear to be hundreds of examples of using that naming.Naraht (talk) 15:48, 19 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I don't believe there is a limit. But each one must follow the policies and guidelines of Wikipedia, or it will be liable to be deleted. In particular, each must have the multiple references to independent reliable sources which are required to establish that the subject is notable. --ColinFine (talk) 16:42, 19 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Article's content

edit

Hello support,

I've got the following question. Why some companies have the rights to post articles with commercial purposes (have a link leading to their websites)? Here is a short list of such articles:

Peteraa (talk) 15:51, 19 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

WP:EL says that one of the acceptable uses of external links is to link to the official website of the subject. So if a company meets the notability requirement there can be an article about that company, which may link to the company's official website. People associated with a company are strongly discouraged from editing an article about that company, as they have a conflict of interest, but somebody else may do so.
Three of the articles had links just to their official website; Economy Car Rentals had half a dozen links, to their different countries' websites: I have removed all but one. I also observe that Economy Car Rentals and Sixt have no independent references, and so do not establish notability and may get deleted. --ColinFine (talk) 16:52, 19 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hello ColinFine,

Thank you for the quick response!

Would you please define the meaning of: " if a company meets the notability requirement there can be an article about that company, which may link to the company's official website."? The following text says" "An organization is generally considered notable if it has been the subject of significant coverage in reliable, independent secondary sources. Trivial or incidental coverage of a subject by secondary sources is not sufficient to establish notability. All content must be verifiable. If no independent, third-party, reliable sources can be found on a topic, then Wikipedia should not have an article on it." My next question is: Is it possible a local company to post an article similar to the topic of Hertz Corporation for example? When an article from the biggest US auto rental magazine has been written about it: http://www.autorentalnews.com/News/Story/2012/04/Global-Snapshot-Bulgarian-Car-Rental-Company-Sees-Rapid-Growth.aspxand also lots of positive reviews from high PR websites has been written about its service too? You can find the company as a partner to Payless Car Rental http://www.paylesscar.com/locations/international/ (for Bulgaria).

Delete Michael Boatengs wiki profile

My name is Michael Boateng and i need my Wikipedia profile to be deleted permanently and my reason for this is that I don't want my personal and career information to be on Wikipedia for everyone to see as it is not the 100% truth. please can you respond to my request by deleting my account. If you have any problems please call me <redacted> this is very personal to me and would like action taken immediately. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.179.58.210 (talk) 16:32, 19 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Michael. I have removed your telephone number: nobody from Wikipedia will contact you directly, so inserting personal contact details simply publishes them to the whole world. (The phone number is still visible in earlier versions of this page: if you would like it removed from these, see WP:OVERSIGHT).
The page on you will not be deleted unless you or somebody else successfully argue that it meets one of Wikipedia's criteria for deletion: whether you want it there or not has little bearing. However, we are keen that Wikipedia contains correct and verifiable information. Any information in that article which is not referenced to a reliable source may be removed by anybody, and should be removed if it is any way negative about the subject. However, any information which does come from a reliable source should remain (if it is relevant to the article) even if you would rather it was not there - we are talking about information which has already been published somewhere.
If there are particular things that you would like to see removed or changed in the article, your best course is to explain on the talk page what changes you want. --ColinFine (talk) 17:01, 19 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

some internal tool. I have sent contacted Noopur28, but still insists. This article has the references and all the modifications are discussed in Talk sections. There were wikipedia adimns involved and this user consistently has been using this "Twinkle" tools to revert it to old state. There is no act of Vandalism. However, she seems to work with User "Adamstraw99" who has persistently tried to get Vandalism protection, while he himself was committing one. Please refer to his last edit in Nirmal Baba article.

Linking an article to a bio on wikipedia

We don't accept unpublished documents as links or sources for articles. Content added to Wikipedia must be verifiable, which means it must have been published in impartial reliable sources. And of course, if you are in fact "Janice Celedonia, Assistant to Paul O'Neill" as you claim, you should not be altering the article about O'Neill the way you have. --Orange Mike | Talk 19:57, 19 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The Ignorance of Blood - MadmanBot error

edit

Hi I just created a page for the novel The Ignorance of Blood - (The Ignorance of Blood). However, I received a message from MadmanBot stating copyright issues. I believe that MadmanBot is in error. The material copied directly from 'http://www.robert-wilson.eu/falcon/ignorance.html' is an official plot summary from the author's website. It is the most accurate depiction of the book 'The Ignorance of Blood'. Surely plot summaries fit into your Wikipedia guidelines?Rambo.XIV (talk) 19:23, 19 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The material on that page (like almost all webpages) is protected by copyright. You'll need to get it licenced in a way that Wikipedia can use it, or rewrite the summary in your own words. RudolfRed (talk) 19:50, 19 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I suspect, based on your question, that you found one of our over 6 million articles and thought we were affiliated in some way with that subject. Please note that you are at Wikipedia, the free online encyclopedia that anyone can edit, and this page is for asking questions related to using or contributing to Wikipedia itself. Thus, we have no special knowledge about the subject of your question. You can, however, search our vast catalogue of articles by typing a subject into the search field on the upper right side of your screen. Best of luck. --Orange Mike | Talk 19:59, 19 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Rupual's Drag Race Season 5 article.

edit

Hello, I created an article for the upcoming season of this reality television show. It was at first rejected for not having the correct type of reference cited. I fixed the reference with a much better source, and asked the moderator to approve it. They once again denied it, saying that the reference was not good enough - however, the moderator did not fully check the cited source, and made an assumption. After that, they kept deleting my comments in the user talk where I called them out on their behavior. Please allow my article to be created, as it's legitimate information, and cited correctly - despite what a moderator having a bad day may think. Thank you. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia_talk:Articles_for_creation/RuPaul%27s_Drag_Race_(season_5) — Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.92.169.2 (talk) 21:28, 19 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Looking at your comments on the user's talk page, I only saw them remove your comments when they were uncivil. Note that articles should be based on secondary reliable sources. "Straight from the horses mouth" is not as reliable in most cases because it is primary, and care must me taken when choosing a primary source as a source. In addition, the article shouldn't be primarily based on such sources. The site you used as a source reads like a gossip site, and it's the only source in the article. - Purplewowies (talk) 22:33, 19 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
The website is the official website for the television station, not a gossip website. I find that this sort of news is fine to report from the primary source. I wouldn't call pointing out the moderator's flawed view of my source as uncivil. I simply told them that my source is good, while they are not. I really don't know what everyone's problem is with creating the page. It's a TV show, the season is going to happen, why wouldn't you approve the page to be created? If I don't create it, someone else will, so whatever. They can't keep blocking the page from being created. 71.92.169.2 (talk) 23:53, 19 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
It's okay to use a primary source, but only if you also have other sources. See WP:PRIMARY. "Do not base an entire article on primary sources, and be cautious about basing large passages on them." RudolfRed (talk) 01:23, 20 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Loire page move has caused problems

edit

I recently had the following page moves done:

  1. Loire --> Loire (department)
  2. Loire (river) --> Loire

In other words, the Loire article is now about the river, not the department. More clarification at Talk:Loire (department).

However, a problem remains. A large number of articles have links to Loire that need updating to Loire (department). Unfortunately a number of articles have links to Loire where the river is obviously intended, which means those ones should not be updated (they were wrong before, but are now right, if that makes sense). I suppose this means we can't simply get a bot to update them, so does it have to be done manually (which is what I'm doing now, very slowly)? Or is there some other way of automating things?
