Using pipes within conditional expression parameters

edit

Is it possible to use pipes (|) within a parameter of a conditional expression like {{#if:}} or {{#switch:}}? For instance, within a template (using parentheses to make the intended grouping clear):

...{{#switch: {{{1}}}
|caret=^
|hash=#
|(pipe=|)
}}...

Frungi (talk) 07:45, 1 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Try using Template:! instead, a template which emits a pipe.
...{{#switch: {{{1}}}
|caret=^
|hash=#
|pipe={{!}}
}}...
-- John of Reading (talk) 08:46, 1 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. How does that work, though? The template’s source consists of: |. How is it not treated as such when transcluded? —Frungi (talk) 09:09, 1 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
The parser works out the structure of the switch statement before transcluding any of the templates it mentions. Only if the parameter is "pipe" will it then turn its attention to the markup following "pipe=". -- John of Reading (talk) 09:15, 1 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

What's wrong with this page? It always appears in Category:Pages with missing references list. Thanks --Frze (talk) 08:38, 1 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

It's a side-effect of this nonsense edit, which has now been fixed. Pages using Template:SI units of length may turn up in the error category until the job queue gets round to them; or you can force the software to rebuild the page thoroughly by doing a null edit. -- John of Reading (talk) 08:51, 1 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
If you create User:Frze/common.js with these two lines...
importScript('User:Anomie/util.js');
importScript('User:Anomie/previewtemplatelastmod.js'); // Linkback: [[User:Anomie/previewtemplatelastmod.js]]
...then when you edit a page, the "View templates on this page" section at the bottom gives you much more information about the templates, including the date, time and edit summary of the most recent edit. So if a page has been damaged by a template edit, you can quickly see which template it was; and if a page is in an error category, you can quickly see if a related template has been damaged and then restored. -- John of Reading (talk) 08:58, 1 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

/* Infobox- bilateral relations */

edit

I wanted to create an infobox for Bhutan-Slovenia relations, for which I am creating now, but unsure how to do so. I need a infobox highlighting a world map with Bhutan and Slovenia in red. I found the 'File:BlankMap-World.png', but how do I colour it in? Thank You. --KuchenZimjah (talk) 13:18, 1 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

A separate image will have to be created. The volunteers at the Wikipedia:Graphics Lab/Map workshop would be able to do this for you. Alternatively there's some advice at Wikipedia:Graphics Lab/Resources/Tutorials that may help you create the modified image yourself. -- John of Reading (talk) 13:36, 1 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you very much. --KuchenZimjah (talk) 15:26, 1 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

User/page statistics tool on toolserver.org/"tparis" is broken

edit

The statistics for a user returned by http://toolserver.org/~tparis/ is broken ("Page not found (404)"). Sample URL that worked until a few days ago:

http://toolserver.org/~tparis/pcount/index.php?name=Mortense&lang=en&wiki=wikipedia

I presume this is due to that user having been deleted. Is there a replacement? --Mortense (talk) 09:36, 1 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

See Wikipedia:Village pump (technical)/Archive 120#Toolserver issues. --  Gadget850 talk 10:51, 1 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
According to that we have to wait a few weeks before it works again...
There is also a reference to it at TParis' talk page --Mortense (talk) 11:18, 1 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Replacement here--SPhilbrick(Talk) 14:31, 2 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

issued firearms of PDEA Agents

edit

In your definition of Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency(PDEA), the anti-narcotics lead agency of philippine Government you advertently stated that they were issued a COLT 1911 .45 pistol after completion of their Drug enforcement Basic Course (DEOBC) at the PDEA Academy, PDEA Agents service pistol were issued a NORINCO .45 pistol after their DEOBC training.

Thank you and more power. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 112.208.77.110 (talk) 12:26, 1 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Edit the article, supporting your changes with citations to reliable sources, or discuss on the article's talk page. - Karenjc 15:12, 1 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Norinco made/makes a version of the M-1911A1 which is commonly called a Colt .45 for its original maker. Rmhermen (talk) 21:16, 1 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Uploading an additional photo to an existing article

edit

How do I do the above? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Sapientiae Magnae (talkcontribs) 14:24, 1 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

It is better to upload at commons so all languages can use it. See:http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:First_steps --Canoe1967 (talk) 14:33, 1 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Check out Wikipedia:Uploading images. It will help you decide whether the image can be uploaded under an acceptable licence (Wikipedia and Commons are extremely strict about copyright), and where is the best place to upload it. Once you've got it uploaded and licensed correctly, Wikipedia:Picture tutorial will help you add it to the article. - Karenjc 15:09, 1 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Notable Persons List on Paguna, Philippines Wikipedia Page

edit

I would like to inquire who provided the latest version of Notable Persons on the Laguna Philippines wikipedia page as it emulates personalities who have ONLY show business contributions and NOT the history and development of this once premier province in the country Philippines. The list of names shown is hardly representative of the heroes and good citizens of the province.

thank you, rmaharlika — Preceding unsigned comment added by Rmaharlika (talkcontribs) 16:13, 1 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

The reason why is because you haven't fixed the problem. Wikipedia only ever gets better because people who care make it better. Since you care, you need to make it better. If you don't, you really have no one to blame for the substandard condition but yourself. --Jayron32 16:31, 1 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
The list near the end of the Laguna (province) page ought to be a list of all people from Laguna who have Wikipedia articles about them; I see that a few others were wrongly added to the list, I have removed them. It starts with the famous José Rizal; and the next few members of the list were politicians and soldiers. If you know of anyone else from Laguna who is the subject of a Wikipedia article, please add them to the list, or mention them here so that we can add them. Sandbox: How to unpublish

edit

What is the best way to unpublish a sandbox that is appearing live on the web? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Bdelench (talkcontribs) 18:50, 1 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

The contents of a sandbox is accessible to anyone using a browser: in that sense it is "live on the web". If you don't want it to be, you can delete all the contents. It will still be "live on the web" in that it will still be there in the edit history of the sandbox, but it is less likely that people will find it, or that Google will index it. Maproom (talk) 19:04, 1 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
{{NOINDEX}} might help you out, put it at the very top of the page. However, user sandboxes shouldn't appear anyway. See here Thanks, jcc (tea and biscuits) 20:06, 1 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Keep in mind that you can always temporarily delete the contents of page. When you want to work again with them, you can go into the page history and either undo your deletion, or open up a prior (undeleted) version of the page and save that. -- John Broughton (♫♫) 20:18, 1 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

File:Writing Magnifying.PNG

Something wrong. --Frze (talk) 19:39, 1 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Can't see anything wrong with the actual picture in an article when I tried it out in the WP:Sandbox. The file description page had an article? about Mohamed abdul ismail copied in pasted into it and all other information removed and so I cleared that up, and restored the old information if that was what you'd meant. jcc (tea and biscuits) 20:23, 1 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Looks like you fixed it. -- John Broughton (♫♫) 20:16, 1 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  Resolved

It would appear that I managed to fix it. jcc (tea and biscuits) 20:29, 1 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Help with translation

edit

I am editing a Wiki page that needs expansion and I'm getting lots of information from the Spanish Wikipedia because the page there is very extensive. Is there a way to put the spanish wiki in the references? Charlie the Pig (talk) 19:41, 1 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, but I don't think that's allowed (feel free to correct me). Instead I would recommend suitably translating the text and then also copy the references that the Spanish Wiki has for the section that you're translating. Thanks, jcc (tea and biscuits) 20:05, 1 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Jcc is correct - see WP:CIRCULAR. -- John Broughton (♫♫) 20:14, 1 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
It is required to put a link to the Spanish Wiki article you are translating from (derivative copyright issues). That is done by using the Template:Translation/Ref. Rmhermen (talk) 21:11, 1 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

wikipedia question

edit

Hi,

I created Wikipedia talk:Articles for creation/Robbie MacNeill.

this article was rejected by Sionk, with the comment: "If he is, or was, widely known (or his music was successful) you'll need to provide proof."

In turn, I fleshed out the article. I noted this to Sionk, and there was no reply. (it's been months).

Have a look at "list of Canadian musicians", there are many examples of artists of equal renown

(are you taking these down too?) — Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.52.238.100 (talk) 20:34, 1 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

That article is not currently submitted for review. If you'd like to submit it to be reviewed again, put {{subst:submit}} at the top of it. --Demiurge1000 (talk) 20:44, 1 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Or, in the pink box at the top of the page, click the "click here" link.--ukexpat (talk) 13:12, 3 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Inconsistency tag

edit

I have discovered that two articles contain inconsistent dates for the death of a person. I recall that there is a tag that can be applied to both articles stating the conflict, and that it should not be removed until the conflict is resolved. What is the tag for the purpose? Robert McClenon (talk) 22:20, 1 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

See Template:Contradict-other. You may want to bookmark Wikipedia:Template messages/Cleanup, which lists like, all of them. --Jayron32 22:33, 1 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you. I have tagged today's featured article and another article. How do I "bookmark" an article? Robert McClenon (talk) 22:47, 1 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Depends on your browser. In Internet Explorer, go to the favorites menu and select add favorite. In Firefox it's booksmarks->add bookmark. Other browswers are similar. RudolfRed (talk) 22:50, 1 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I just leave a wikilink on my own userpage. I have a section titled "Stuff I use alot" on my own userpage, and I just dump wikilinks to stuff I find useful, but that I might forget about. --Jayron32 23:17, 1 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you. So there isn't a special technique. It is either using conventional Wiki techniques or conventional web browser techniques. Robert McClenon (talk) 00:12, 2 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
