Legal Case

Hello, someone made a Wikipedia edit for Juvederm on September 26th 2012 with a deliberately erroneous statement to support a legal case which they have filed against a practitioner. Is there any way that the lawyers of the practitioner can request the IP address for the edit to help prove that the entry was malicious and deliberate? Edit Title of draft page

Defaced public profile of a historic figure

In the profile of Maria Montessori someone inserted a sentence in the Life... Section that can't be changed: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maria_Montessori

Cluebot reverted the vandalism less than a minute after it was put into the article. That's probably why you didn't see it when you tried to remove it. You just happen to load the page in the fraction of a minute that the vandalism was present and then edit it when it was gone. Dismas|^(talk) 02:06, 7 September 2013 (UTC)

I don't see one at List of XML and HTML character entity references, but you could wrap the entire "word-dash-word" inside the {{nowrap}} template. -- John of Reading (talk) 06:57, 7 September 2013 (UTC)

Aligning templates?

redirect

Why is Harpo Studios redirecting to Oprah Winfrey instead of Harpo Productions? 204.111.20.10 (talk) 04:20, 7 September 2013 (UTC)

Because at one point Harpo Productions redirected to Oprah Winfrey, and a bot changed Harpo Studios to not be a double-redirect. It's been fixed now. RudolfRed (talk) 05:05, 7 September 2013 (UTC)

copyright confusion

I wrote an article that was deleted without the opportunity to comment. I noted reasons for deletion and corrected the references, links and article content to reflect the changes required for the article to be posted. The bot then picked up that it was a breach of copyright because the content was in a copy that had been binned. Both copies are copyrighted to me. So, if I understand this correctly, you wrote the information on the other web site. And then you copied most/all of it into an article here. Correct? If so, please see Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials to see what you can do about allowing it to be published here as well. In general, it's best if things are just re-written according to our guidelines in the first place.

That said, it looks like the system that you wrote about is not notable in the first place and I've put the article up for a discussion about its notability. Dismas|^(talk) 05:33, 7 September 2013 (UTC)

Actually, it looks like Issadoral wrote an article here, and that article was deleted. Shortly before the article was deleted, the content was copied to "Wikibin - The Recycle Bin of Wikipedia". The article was then recreated here with nearly identical content (but, apparently, better referencing), resulting in MadmanBot identifying the recreated article as a possible copyvio of the Wikibin page, which is itself just a copy of the original article. ʍw 19:54, 7 September 2013 (UTC)

matching page name drop down list has 'stopped'

HELP! the 'matching page name' drop down list function has stopped happening ... how do I get it back? To be clear, when I type anything in the search box, no drop down list appears with suggested pages matching what I am typing.

@Dai yappie: Sometimes such problems are caused by the way a browser extension interacts with Wikipedia. What browser (including version number) and operating system are you using? Technical question regarding IP user talk pages

I just posted this on an IP talk page. The user has been on Wikipedia for a long time, but only recently started editing under the current IP. I said in the comment, essentially, "it's your talk page, so technically you're free to delete my comments if you like". But actually chances are in a matter of weeks or months it won't be his/her talk page anymore. This is not a criticism (I don't mind my comments on other users' talk page being removed), but on a purely technical note, is it only registered users who own their own user talk pages, or does this apply to shifting/dynamic IPs as well? Per WP:BLANKING - "Policy does not prohibit users, whether registered or unregistered users, from removing comments from their own talk pages, although archiving is preferred." It goes on to list exceptions to this guideline, but none of those seem to apply to the case you've mentioned. 204.111.20.10 (talk) 11:10, 7 September 2013 (UTC)

It would, in my opinion, be a good idea to prevent IP users from deleting talk page comments, because deletion can make it more difficult to check whether there has been a history of vandalism from the address. United States Environmental Protection Agency

Hello my name is Andrée and I am a student in Sweden. I was actually writhing a essay about the EPA and I found a problem with the wiki page in the second paragraph.

"Members of the EPA are a bunch of pussies because they care about something as irrelevant as the environment. They refuse to accept the fact that the Earth's atmosphere is and has been fucked for years, and there's nothing we can do to stop it, so stop trying and stop being so butthurt because you know it's true"

Wikipedia has a very specific definition of Vandalism

"Vandalism is any addition, removal, or change of content in a deliberate attempt to compromise the integrity of Wikipedia. Examples of typical vandalism are adding irrelevant obscenities and crude humor to a page, illegitimately blanking pages, and inserting obvious nonsense into a page."

That does not meet our definition of vandalism. There is no need to report their edit anywhere. GB fan 11:46, 7 September 2013 (UTC)

publishing photographs

In all likelihood, this is non-free content. As such, because it isn't on the list of what is commonly acceptable, the answer would seem to be "no". What is certain is that you can't upload it, legally, to the Wikimedia Commons, because you don't own the copyright to the image. -- John Broughton (♫♫) 20:22, 7 September 2013 (UTC)

I think that government photos don't usually have copyright, but it depends on the jurisdiction. In any case, WP:BLP doesn't like migshots. See WP:MUG. RudolfRed (talk) 01:17, 8 September 2013 (UTC)

US Federal government photos are often public domain, but local government photos typically are not free. --SPhilbrick(Talk) 14:50, 8 September 2013 (UTC)

WP:BLP pertains, of course, to living people. I'm told by Zygotican, on my user talk page, that the mug shot in question is of a dead person. That appears to make it (at least potentially) acceptable under WP:NFC#Images (see allowed type #10). -- John Broughton (♫♫) 19:27, 8 September 2013 (UTC)

Change location of reference

I added the following paragraph to Quantum Annealing -> Implementations section: In May 2013 it was announced that a consortium of Google, NASA AMES and the non-profit Universities Space Research Association purchased an adiabatic quantum computer from D-Wave Systems with 512 qubits.</ref>

Then I added a reference for my addition.

The system erroneously added superscript 7 to the next paragraph in the Implementations section. I do not know how to delete the superscript 7 and change </ref> at the end of my addition to superscript 7. Will someone please do this?

Hi Rwarren123, let me see if I understand what you were trying to do. You wanted to have the reference you added go after the words "with 512 qubits"? If so, just remove the </ref> tag after that sentence, and cut and paste the reference you added from the end of the paragraph to where the stray </ref> tag was. Basically, the reference needs to go exactly where you want the superscript number to go. I hope this helps! Howicus (talk) 17:47, 7 September 2013 (UTC)

(e/c) Hey Rwarren. I've fixed it. What happened was that an unpaired </ref> was added after the text you inserted, and then the actual citation you intended was placed below the next paragraph. You can see how your edit actually came out here. I suspect this error is a result of using the very buggy new Visual Editor (currently invoked by clicking on "edit this page^beta"), rather than using regular Wikitext editing (currently invoked by clicking on the incredibly deceptive link for "edit source"). New Contributions / Submission of article "Lao Human Rights Council" on September 7, 2013

We tried to submit a new Contributions / Submission of entry/article entitled "Lao Human Rights Council" on September 7, 2013. We used the article wizard this time.

We tried several times to submit the article, but it just kept coming up in the "talk" section and gave us an message that the article was not submitted. We tried to resubit the text in the talk section and the project page, but we don't know what happened and if it was saved or submitted or not ?

We don't know what we did wrong ?

Lao Human Rights Council -- article submission (it says we did not submit for review, but we tried and over to do so)

We tried over and over to submit for review the article "Lao Human Rights Council", a new contribution we have written with the Article Wizard. It just says that our article was not submitted for review, so we keep trying with out any luck ?? Can you please help fix this , and let us know what we did wrong ???

We are mostly just trying to submit the article for review now that we have written a stub submission. Maybe something is wrong with our computer on our end/ or internet connection.

You were doing the right thing each time, but there was a slight problem further up the page - a missing </ref> - that stopped it working properly. What article do you want the changes made to? Please make any request on the article talk page, since you appear to have a conflict of interest. Also, do you own the copyright to the pictures, and are you willing to upload it with the proper copyleft? If the article is about a particular unit, then there might be notability issues about adding a picture and name of a particular family member. Robert McClenon (talk) 22:26, 7 September 2013 (UTC)

Scrolling change in Wikipedia pages?

Did something change -- or am I going crazy? My recollection is that when scrolling down, the left panel (navigation/search/toolbox) remained static while the main part of the article scrolled up or down. I am using the Modern skin in FireFox, and JavaScript is enabled. The norm is for the left sidebar (aka "quickbar") to vanish from view when scrolling down a page. That said, it's quite possible that you have done some customization so that the left sidebar is visible at all times, and that such customization has recently broken.

You might want to look at WP:EIW#Quickbar (specifically, the "Floating the quickbar" section) for ways to have the left sidebar behave as you want - either something new to implement (if your memory is wrong), or something you've already implemented (in which case, you might find a talk page to ask about why what you implemented has now broken; alternatively, you could post at WP:VPT if you can identify some specific JS/CSS code that has stopped working. -- John Broughton (♫♫) 21:06, 7 September 2013 (UTC)

Advice on disambiguation

A curious problem: at Grafton Galleries I added a source which named the painter Maris as someone whose pictures were shown there. However there were at that time three Maris brothers, Jacob Maris, Matthijs Maris and Willem Maris; to date, I've not been able to determine which one or which subset of the three was exhibited. The question: until and unless I manage to establish that, what is the best way to link Maris? DPL bot naturally does not want me to link to that disambiguation page; should I create a new page at, say, Maris brothers; link to Maris (surname); unlink completely; or none of the above? Hey JLS&N. The problem as I see it that if the reason for creating a dab page for the brothers or an article on them is to have a place to link, then this seems to me a tail wagging the dog situation. On the other hand, if an article can be sustained and would be a good entry, independent of this linking issue, this would just provide a good motivation spur for creation and, as a bonus, take care of the DAB issue. Neither a DAB page or an article is warranted solely because of this situation, since it's a one-off; how often will you have another situation where you know it's a Maris but not which one? One solution is to provide the indeterminacy and all three link in the text, e.g., "...one of the Maris brothers, (Jacob, Matthijs or Willem), and other artists." So if don't think writing an article on its merits is a good idea, and you don't like the in-text attribution solution, I think you should simply unlink. An unlink is better than pointing them at a Dab where the reader get no further information on which one. Best regards--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 05:18, 8 September 2013 (UTC)
