editExternal link currency
editIn the external links on this page List of Australian comics creators#External links, one of the links, Tabula Rasa, is quite old. I emailed the owner and he said it hasn't been updated since 2009 and he has no plans to continue it. It's still an OK resource - but is there a way (and is it necessary?) to indicate that it's quite out of date information? Clarinetina (talk) 00:20, 30 May 2014 (UTC)
- Probably just best to state that in plain text after the link. There are inline maintenance templates for outdated information, but using them on something that can't be fixed is pretty pointless. SpinningSpark 10:59, 30 May 2014 (UTC)
Infobox Image size
editHi. Newbie here..tbh I only registered so I could ask this question. Anyone noticed that images in the Infobox have shrunk? It's not all articles but most (Jennifer Lawrence for example). Anyone else notice this or is it a problem with my own computer? I was wondering if somebody such an an administrator was maybe changing the format of the Infobox and that altered how images appear much smaller in some articles...it's only occurred inside the last 24 hours as yesterday the images were fine. Curious to find out if it's just me that's seeing this. Thanks.RP.Jones.85 (talk) 01:17, 30 May 2014 (UTC)
- @RP.Jones.85: Hey RP.Jones.85. It's not just you. There's a discussion about this at Wikipedia:Village pump (technical)/Archive 127#Infobox Image. Best regards--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 00:56, 30 May 2014 (UTC)
How to RFC on existing discussion initiated by another editor
editI want to initiate an RFC on this discussion because I feel bad for the IP and think he/she has a more-or-less valid point. Is it appropriate to simply insert an RFC template at the top of the existing section? WP:RFC suggests that the section would be overly long, but I'm not sure if that's a problem when it comes to preexisting discussions. Thanks. Brycehughes (talk) 04:38, 30 May 2014 (UTC)
- Personally, I would put the RFC template at the bottom of the current discussion, possibly in a new section. The RFC needs to be followed by a clear, brief, neutral statement on what the RFC is asking for comment on, such as "Should information on the 49ers be included in this article?". To put that at the top of an already underway discussion would be misleading. It would not be clear who had responded to the AFC question and who had responded to something else, and in some cases could lead to comments being misconstrued as having a meaning that was not intended. Facebook sourcing Wikipedia
editI was Facebook-ing while I realised that my "Movies" box had a very awful image of "My Neighbor Totoro", so I came here to see if I could change it. However that image is not present here, maybe a FB problem. But in FB there is no way to edit it. How does this work?Yoshida Keiji (talk) 09:10, 30 May 2014 (UTC)
- Many Facebook pages use content from different sources without specifying which is from where. I don't know whether you can influence it but it sounds like a question for Facebook or Wikipedia:Reference desk/Computing. Say which page and image it is about. Unauthorized page
editDear Sir,
I wish to bring to your notice my strongest opposition and objection to this page at Mukul Rohatgi which has been created about myself. This page is wholly unauthorized and was created without my knowledge or consent.
There are several incorrect statements on this page, most importantly relating to my alleged “appointment” as Attorney-General of India. Neither have I been appointed as on date nor have I assumed the office of Attorney General. Another glaring omission is that my late Father has been mentioned as only an advocate whereas he was one of the most respected Judges of the Delhi High Court for many years.
Kindly remove this page or cause the same to be removed immediately else I will be constrained to take legal action under Indian as well as international laws.
Regards,
Mukul Rohatgi, Senior Advocate, Supreme Court of India 59 Sundar Nagar, New Delhi, India
- Do not bring legal threats to Wikipedia. Use the articles talk page to specify what is incorrect and needs to be changed. CTF83! 10:41, 30 May 2014 (UTC)
- I've removed the claim about the subject's appointment as Attorney-General, as there was a relevant source and the claim wasn't in it. I've left the family details for now, because the statement as given isn't disputed, and the stronger statement from the subject is potentially verifiable and could then be added.
- Mr Rohatgi, if you would like to help us improve your biography here, please go to Talk:Mukul Rohatgi and let us have links to some reliable sources which cover your career and (so far as is relevant) your father's. Other users will then be happy to amend the article to reflect these sources. Please be aware, though, that there is no concept of an 'authorised' biography here. The policy pages WP:OWN and WP:AUTO are relevant. I think you have an excellent claim here - but you will not be able to rely on getting only your preferred version incorporated into the article. AlexTiefling (talk) 10:55, 30 May 2014 (UTC)
- (edit conflict) First and foremost I should comment on the threat to undertake legal action. As mentioned above legal threats are not allowed and are grounds for an immediate block that will remain until the treat is retracted or the dispute is resolved.
- In regards to the article:
- I removed the statement stating your fathers profession. There was no reliable source that could be used to support either statement so par our biography of living persons i removed it altogether.
- There are multiple news websites and other reliable sources reporting that "Mukul Rohatgi" became Attorney-General of India. As i can apparantly validate this claim using reliable sources I have cited these in the article and retained the Attorney-General of India part.
- In regards to the article:
- If there are more factual errors in this page please mention them and we will look into it. If you intent to take legal action regardless i can only refer you to the Wikimedia Foundation's legal team. Excirial (Contact me,Contribs) 11:02, 30 May 2014 (UTC)
- Furthermore, you must either withdraw the legal threat or bring it to a conclusion before you are permitted to take any further part in community discussions. SpinningSpark 11:59, 30 May 2014 (UTC)
- I have made further edits to remove some unreferenced, overly promotional material and made some changes to the infobox.--ukexpat (talk) 16:25, 30 May 2014 (UTC)
Adding an article to Wikipedia
editHi there,
I'm trying to add an article to Wikipedia, but I have been told that the submission has been declined as there are no citation/ references. I couldn't add the references as they would not link, so how can I add the references please? And is there anyway I can have advice to help with this. Because the whole process isn't easy!
Thanks, Amy
- You added them with this edit. See WP:REF for how. Just put your references in the body of the article, not in the ==references== section, that's what {{reflist}} is for. CTF83! 10:36, 30 May 2014 (UTC)
- You may as well click "Edit" on any Wikipedia article and take a look at the source. The references are being included in "ref" tags. Dmatteng (talk) 16:01, 30 May 2014 (UTC)
Editing an image file
editHello. I want to edit a PNG file that is located on the Wikimedia Commons server, so that I can update it with new information. The file is a map of where the MERS virus has spread so far, and I want to add Iran to the list. I have downloaded and edited the file, but I don't know how I can upload it so that the original file remains in the "history" section of the file's details page, but any links to the file from different articles use my edited image instead.
I appreciate the help.
- At the bottom of the history on the Commons page for the file you will see a link for "Upload a new version of this file". SpinningSpark 11:54, 30 May 2014 (UTC)
Infoboxes!
editHello ! We have a wiki for our own club in handball! I have been trying to add infoboxes on a page to try see if i can get it to work but i dont... How do you add infoboxes? I was going to test make a blank team page where i put the info teamname, players (The amount) Biggest sucess, Trainer, assistant trainer, and a picture of the team! witch we will have on all our teampages in the end (Total 30-35) Best Regards Fredrik! — Preceding unsigned comment added by 213.112.226.165 (talk) 15:23, 30 May 2014 (UTC)
- The information you need is probably at Help:Infobox. But does your club have an article on Wikipedia, or its own separate wiki? If the latter, you will need to create infobox templates first. In that case, you might examine {{infobox}} to see how they're built. --NYKevin 16:20, 30 May 2014 (UTC)
Yes it's a own seperate wiki! Best Regards Fredrik!
- There are a couple things you need to consider then.
- Just because it's a wiki doesn't mean that it's run by the same software that runs Wikipedia. There are a few different types of wiki software.
- This help desk is for asking questions about how to edit Wikipedia. If you have computer questions (such as about other wiki software), the better place for those questions would be at the Computing Reference Desk.
- Dismas|(talk) 17:00, 30 May 2014 (UTC)
- To expand on the previous answer, if you are using the Mediawiki software, you need more than just the template {{infobox}}. All that does is invoke module:infobox which is written in Lua. The top level infobox templates—you probably want {{Infobox handball club}}, {{Infobox handball biography}}, and/or {{Infobox handball league}}—call the module through the infobox template. You will need all these elements if you want infoboxes to work on your wiki in the same was as they do on Wikipedia. For Lua, you need to have the Scribunto extension installed, Lua is included with this. You can then copy the Lua code for the module and the code for the templates from Wikipedia. Don't forget to attribute Wikipedia editors on your wiki for anything you copy from here. That is required by the licencing. SpinningSpark 17:10, 30 May 2014 (UTC)
Wikipedia On Facebook / About and Location
editI don't know if this data comes from Wikipedia, but I was trying to figure out how to edit the "About" name that appears on a Wikipedia Facebook page. For some reason, South Whitehall Township, Pennsylvania is displayed as "About South Whitehall" instead of "About South Whitehall, Pennsylvania" and the map location on the Facebook page shows South Whitehall, Michigan, though the latitude and longitude coordinates appear to be correct in Wikipedia.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/South_Whitehall https://www.facebook.com/pages/South-Whitehall/112153242135827
Any direction or guidance you can give would be appreciated.
