Please help 2 things - I have failed in my attempt to add a book as a general reference at the end of this page with the other 6 or so books/ documents. Please fix It is in the wrong place.

Also - shouldn't there be a heading "Further References" on top of these extra references?? Thanks in advance and sorry203.132.68.1 (talk) 00:50, 22 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

The ref tags are not necessary at that point. I believe this has been pointed out several times before. As the 'other books' do not have them, they should not have been added. An additional heading is not essential but you could add something like 'Footnotes' above the reflist template and possibly 'Sources' after it (above the list of books) if so desired. Anna Friel Series Mania Award

edit

Hello,

Could you please update Anna Friel's Page (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anna_Friel) with the following award:

Series Mania, Best Actress (for Broken): http://variety.com/2017/tv/festivals/sean-bean-performance-broken-jimmy-mcgovern-british-tv-1202393012/

Many thanks 80.87.27.34 (talk) 11:12, 22 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I have removed the misplaced {{request edit}} template from your question, as that template belongs on the talk page of the article concerned. --David Biddulph (talk) 12:41, 22 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Image pop-out?

edit

Sup peeps. Is there a way of having a close-up (or a zoom in perhaps?) on an image? Apologies for lack of clarity in expressing my question: I clearly have no idea what I'm talking about. But thanks in advance! Cheers, — fortunavelut lunaRarely receiving (many) pings. Bizarre. 12:13, 22 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

It isn't entirely clear what the OP was asking, but of course if a reader clicks on a thumbnail image in an article this will open the page for the image itself, and in many cases this wil have a range of different sizes available for display. --David Biddulph (talk) 14:21, 22 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you both; perhaps the nearest thing I can thhink of is how on our maps (London's in the IB is an example), one can view a focussed and a broader view of the "same" thing? — fortunavelut lunaRarely receiving (many) pings. Bizarre. 14:41, 22 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@Fortuna Imperatrix Mundi: I went down the rabbit hole: that behaviour is caused by the (wonderful and underused, IMO) Template:Location map (the London article includes {{infobox settlement}} which calls it via the pushpin_map key). That template itself calls the Lua module Module:Location_map whose source code is provided and (relatively) short.
I am not up to the task myself, but digging through the code for the part that makes an alternative display and making a template {{display alternative image|imageA|imageB}} that allows to switch the image in a similar fashion is probably fairly easy for a Lua programmer. Try your luck at WP:VPT, maybe? TigraanClick here to contact me 18:24, 22 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@Tigraan: Many thanks! Yes, I'll give that a go then- although- confession!- you kinda lost me after "rabbit hole"  ;) Thanks though for all your help with this. Have a good week! — fortunavelut lunaRarely receiving (many) pings. Bizarre. 18:31, 22 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Fortuna Imperatrix Mundi the switcher for the location maps is controlled by MediaWiki:Gadget-switcher.js, which is more generic. you can see examples (without location maps) in Template:Switcher/testcases. you can find a very simple example in User:Jackmcbarn/switcher as well. Change Title of Houthoff Buruma

edit

Dear reader,

A few weeks a go I requested a change of the Houthoff Buruma Wiki-page via Talk. Unfortunately no one has responded. The name of this Dutch law firm has changed to only Houthoff, I'm somehow unable to change the title and logo myself. Can somebody make these changes? It's one of Holland's biggest law firms so it's important the information is up to date.

Change of Title to: Houthoff and Change of Logo to new Houthoff Logo

Please change the Title from Houthoff Buruma to Houthoff. Source: Dutch chamber of commerce - https://www.kvk.nl/orderstraat/product-kiezen/?kvknummer=342161820000 and a statement on their website: https://www.houthoff.com/insights/News/Houthoff-Buruma-kiest-voor-aangescherpte-strategie-en-wordt-Houthoff

Is it also possible to change the URL to Houthoff too?

Many Thanks

Moved. --David Biddulph (talk) 12:44, 22 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Note that I can see no sign of any move request on the article's talk page, so that's presumably why nobody responded. --David Biddulph (talk) 12:47, 22 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
He requested on his own talk page. Ruslik_Zero 12:51, 22 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

SE Ranking

edit

I am a small business and trying to find out why my web site cannot be seen. I have joined and have read many articles about getting your site seen on the www. When I run a SE ranking Wikipedia come up as the top site under roofing, yet you are not a roofing company. What I read said you need to link to Wikipedia to get seen. I joined and still confused because this is an information type web site and not a business web site. I could write an article (not the best writer or can spell) about being a woman and owning a roofing company but who cares. So I am asking how is it possible to link my company to this site. Oh and I have never been on a roof, scared of heights. If you want to check out my site it is www.totalrestore1985.com. Thank you — Preceding unsigned comment added by Totalrestore1985 (talkcontribs) 12:48, 22 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@Totalrestore1985: Wikipedia is high in search engine results because we are the fifth most visited website and have millions of incoming links from other sites, and millions of articles including some about roofing. We are an encyclopedia and not a tool to help other websites get traffic. We add nofollow to external links to deter people from trying to use us to improve their search rankings, so I think you got wrong advice. The first five Google results for me on roofing is from the English Wikipedia. That does seem a bit extreme but we don't control Google. A Google search om totalrestore1985 shows they do know your site. It just doesn't place highly in general searches like roofing. Search engine optimization can be difficult and there are millions of websites mentioning the term. A search on SEO forum may find places you can ask for tips. If you consider contributing to Wikipedia then see Wikipedia:Paid-contribution disclosure, Wikipedia:Conflict of interest and Wikipedia:Notability (organizations and companies). I need some help create ing a page — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2405:204:7141:FA46:B7EC:4C4B:8A3C:6066 (talk) 15:13, 22 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

The starting point for such advice is at WP:Your first article. --David Biddulph (talk) 15:25, 22 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
To which I would add, IP user, that it is worth thinking about why you want to create an article (think of it as an article rather than a 'page'): it is to improve Wikipedia, or is it for some other person or group? If the latter, Wikipedia might not be an appropriate place to be working. --ColinFine (talk) 15:41, 22 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Jewish cemetery in Prague, Czech Republic

edit

When we visited this old cemetery in Prague in the late 1960's, we were told by a local guide that the reason there were so many graves in such a small space, was that, at some point during its development, the local government would not allow Jews to have any more land. Therefore, hundreds of graves and gravestones from then on are crammed into this small space. Also, he told us that the earliest grave was from the 12th century.

Hello, Carol. Do you have a question about editing Wikipedia? If you're wanting to suggest a change to a particular article, the Talk page for that article is the best place to make the suggestion. But "Somebody told me" (even if it was an official guide) is not sufficient: we would need a reliable published source for this information, otherwise Wikipedia becomes useless. --ColinFine (talk) 17:18, 22 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I need to change the logo on our page Biz Television - we changed our branding. I cannot figure out how to change it. HELPKkantz (talk) 17:49, 22 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

  • Hello Kkantz. Since it seems you are an employee of Biz Television, you need to read WP:PAID and make the mandatory disclaimer before editing any further, otherwise you will be forbidden from editing ("blocked").
Then, please read WP:LOGO which describes the conduct to follow when it comes to uploading copyrighted logos.
Finally, here's the canned answer to questions about image insertion; see in particular steps 3 and 4:

To use an image on Wikipedia, follow these steps:

  1. Ascertain carefully the copyright status of the image. If in doubt, ask. As a rule of thumb, images that you did not take yourself are almost always under copyright, and images that you took can be released under a free license.
  2. If the image is in the public domain, or under a free license compatible with Wikimedia Commons' license requirements, or if you hold the copyrights and are willing to release the image under such a license, upload it on Wikimedia Commons using the Upload Wizard.
  3. If the image is neither public domain nor available under a free license, check whether it satisfies all non-free content criteria. In particular, photographs of living people almost never qualify. If it does not, it cannot be used on Wikipedia; do not upload it. If it does, upload it on Wikipedia (not on Wikimedia Commons).
  4. Once the image has been uploaded to the Wikimedia Foundation's servers (either to Commons or Wikipedia), follow the steps in the picture tutorial to place the image in an article.

Can't save edits to my draft

edit

Hello, I am currently working on Draft:Romeo Langford (basketball) and have been unable to save edits. Each time i try to save, I enter the "confirmation code" typing in the letter combinations. However, each time I get re taken to the confirmation page with a different code, saying that I put in the wrong code. This just started, as I was able to edit the draft last night fine. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thank you. Ajdeluca4 (talk) 18:09, 22 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@Ajdeluca4: Users usually only have to enter a CAPTCHA when they add external links before their account is autoconfirmed, meaning it's four days old and has made ten edits. Your account will be autoconfirmed in 20 hours so if you have problems, you can just wait with external links until then. PrimeHunter (talk) 21:22, 22 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@PrimeHunter: Hello again, my account is now confirmed but I still get error messages when I try to save the draft after adding a link. I don't need to enter the CAPTCHA anymore, but it still says my edits are not saved. My edits save with no problem when I just add text, but don't work adding a reference. Do you have any suggestions or thoughts on why this is? Ajdeluca4 (talk) 23:45, 23 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@Ajdeluca4: There are different possibilities. I cannot say without knowing the error message or what exactly you try to save. Maybe there is a link to a blacklisted website but I'm just guessing. If you have changed your interface language away from the default "en - English" at Special:Preferences then you may get a more informative error message by changing back to "en - English". How can I get notified for replies to my posts?

edit

Hello.

How can I track replies that are being made to my posts?

The watch list also tracks all other changes outside of my topics. --Alxx32 (talk) 20:00, 22 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@Alxx32: You can't only watch part of a page. However, if folks are polite, they will "ping" you when they reply, as I have done here. RudolfRed (talk) 20:08, 22 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I see, @RudolfRed:. Thank you. --Alxx32 (talk) 20:16, 22 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Sandbox questions

edit

Hello, I am a new Wikipedian and am wondering about the sandbox, I created a sandbox and was seeing how templates and the editor worked on that sandbox. Anyways I was using the micronation country template and just filled it in with a country I just made up to see how the text would render and if I was doing everything right, and then BAM it gets deleted because people said it was a hoax and so they deleted it. I thought I was misusing the sandbox by accident but then I want to the Wikipedia:About the Sandbox page and I didn't see anything I violated, am I correct or not in thinking my sandbox shouldn't have been deleted? Thanks YuriGagrin12 (talk) 20:19, 22 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hey YuriGagrin12. Maybe User:Winged Blades of Godric or User:Shirt58 can offer more detailed feedback on why this may not have fallen under our usual exception for allowing users to experiment in their sandbox. GMGtalk 20:25, 22 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you, I ave left messages on their talk pages (they haven't responded) Is there any way I could link this page in a comment to them? YuriGagrin12 (talk) 21:07, 22 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hey YuriGagrin12. You can always copy and paste [[Wikipedia:Help desk#Sandbox questions]], but you probably don't need to since I pinged them in my comment the same way I pinged you with this comment. When you mention someone's username with link to their user page they get a notification. GMGtalk 21:13, 22 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
(edit conflict) @YuriGagrin12: Wikipedia:Criteria for speedy deletion#G3. Pure vandalism and blatant hoaxes applies to all pages including user sandboxes. G1 and G2 have exceptions for sandboxes but not G3. Wikipedia:User pages#User pages that look like articles says: "Pages that egregiously present false information may be tagged with {{db-hoax}}." Winged Blades of Godric and Shirt58 were notified of this discussion by GreenMeansGo by linking their user pages, like I linked your user page (via {{reply to}}) in this post. You could link to this section with [[Wikipedia:Help desk#Sandbox questions]]. Note that starting a line with spaces will cause special formatting. Don't do it to start a normal text paragraph. PrimeHunter (talk) 21:16, 22 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Woah, this is not vandalism or a blatant hoax! This is literally just me messing around with templates to see how they work. Ive never vandalized or even edited an actual article because of this stuff thats going on. I literally just got an account yesterday to see how templates and editing work. I understand wikipedia is not a blog service or free web hosting service, however I didn't violate that. Also you can't verify if this information is true or not because micro nations are very common. Based on what the about page has said and everyones comments my article shouldn't have been deleted. Also in the user page guidelines (This is copy and pasted)Experimentation (usually on subpages) Trial pages for templates, unfamiliar or specialist markup (including LaTeX), etc., as a kind of personal sandbox. Pages to test bots and scripts without doing harm.

User pages and user subpages can be transcluded and substituted, so they behave like templates, and can be tested as such.YuriGagrin12 (talk) 21:33, 22 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@YuriGagrin12: If Google finds nothing about an alleged micronation then it isn't even "real" by micronation standards. Your first post said "filled it in with a country I just made up", so you admit you made it up. That's indistinguishable from a hoax. We are not going to say "Users are allowed to make hoaxes if they call them tests". All hoax writers could just claim to be making tests. Please accept that we have rules. I just pointed you to both a policy and a guideline supporting deletion of userspace hoaxes. You brought up Wikipedia:About the Sandbox but that says: "it must not be used for malicious purposes". The linked page Wikipedia:Misuse of the sandbox says: "it may be deleted at any time in accordance with Wikipedia's criteria for speedy deletion, particularly, the criterion governing pure vandalism and hoaxes." User sandboxes can be seen by everybody and there are limits to what we allow in them. I'm assuming good faith but for somebody not making a hoax, you are fighting pretty hard to keep your non-hoax. PrimeHunter (talk) 22:08, 22 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I am sorry for misusing the sandbox but I can assure you I was not attempting to make a hoax or spread false information in anyway. But I do apologize and am sorry. The reason I cam here was not to retrieve data but to see why my post was deleted and that has been answered. YuriGagrin12 (talk) 22:43, 22 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
