Category:American curators vs. Category:American art curators

What is the criteria for whether I should assign a United States-based art curator to Category:American curators or to Category:American art curators? I'm not understanding the rationale for these two separate categories.

(It does not appear that "Category:American art curators" is meant to be for curators of "American art".)

Is "Category:American curators" simply meant to be broader, to include curators in other fields besides art? In which case, an art curator from the US could go into either category? thanks for the help. Wikipersistence (talk) 03:48, 30 June 2020 (UTC)

In general, an article should be placed in the more specific category (unless the more general category is tagged as non-diffusing, in which case it should go into both). Yes, it seems that Category:American curators is for non-art curators, e.g. John D. Anderson, Curator of Aerodynamics at the National Air and Space Museum. Thank you so much for the help Clarityfiend, and for clarifying the purpose of these two category pages. I'm going to give this some more thought. I understand the principle that articles should be placed in the more specific category. In this case, though, I'm having some doubts/reservations about putting the art curators in a separate category, especially since so many art curators are already in the broader Curators category.
I'm wondering if it would be a good idea to have a discussion among editors who might be categorizing curators. Where would be the best place for me to start a discussion about how to assign pages in these two categories? Should I use Category talk:American curators?
Similarly, are there any other analogous Category scenarios that have been discussed already that you could point me to, so that I could learn more about how this has worked for other fields? I see no problem with the separation; art and non-art curators are probably entirely separate groups (though even an overachieving renegade or two wouldn't change that). So, unless you have some objection, I'll WP:be bold and transfer the misplaced entries to the art category. Clarityfiend (talk) 07:54, 1 July 2020 (UTC)

If you think that's the best course, I don't object to what you're proposing. Thanks for moving the art-specific curators into the art sub-category. I will then follow that precedent and add art curators whose pages I work on into the art sub-category, going forward.
There's also a question in Category talk:American art curators about renaming that category to be "US art curators", because there are other "American" countries south of the US. Do you have an opinion about that suggestion? I think it makes sense to rename the category to "United States art curators", but it also looks like the category name would then not follow the pattern established by other categories Category:Curators by nationality. So maybe it needs to stay as "American art curators"? Wikipersistence (talk) 16:17, 1 July 2020 (UTC)

You may be misunderstanding the purpose of Wikipedia. It is not an indiscriminate collection of biographies; rather, subjects are included if they satisfy the notability criteria, which require high-quality independent coverage. If you believe you satisfy these criteria, you can request an article here, but, in my experience, the vast majority of people who request biographies on themselves in the belief they merit an article are generally wrong. – Teratix ₵ 06:52, 30 June 2020 (UTC)

Further, there is a huge backlog of such requests at Wikipedia:Requested articles/Arts and entertainment/Film, radio and television#People. We're all volunteers here, and everyone works on what satisfies them. Writing an article from scratch entails a significant amount of work (hours), unlike a social media profile or database site entry. If you are notable, it's probably more likely that an article for you will be created when an editor sees one of your films, writes about it, notices there is no article for you, and decides to write one. Now, it can't hurt if you want to do some of the legwork of finding good sources (as noted above) and create an entry with them at the list to which I linked – I just wanted to clarify how it works. —[AlanM1 (talk)]— 09:42, 30 June 2020 (UTC)

"Invento Robotics" page tagged for speedy deletion.

Help to resolve the problem.

The company is one of the pioneers on Robotics in India and has been in the forefront of fighting Covid-19 in India by introducing UVC disinfectant robots and other Thermal scanning robots. I have cited plenty of references in the page for verification. Please let me know what is the problem so that I can try and fix it as I honestly believe the page merits a mention on wikipedia

Anuj 0601, please be aware that when the notability of a topic is judged, the references are assessed on quality, not quantity. The references that I have checked are not independent, being based on statements by the company's founder, and so do very little to help establish notability. Which four of the 31 references currently in Invento Robotics do you think do most to help establish the subject as notable? Maproom (talk) 10:33, 30 June 2020 (UTC)

Having said that, there are many references formIndian Express, THe Week. The Hindu and other notable articles which establishes the credibility of the content. There are hundereds of articles in various credible sites also. If you go to the links posted as reference you will find that the comnpany and its achievements merits a mention on the wikipedia page. It is not primaril;y up to other editors to go looking for sources to improve Invento Robotics, Anuj 0601 although they may choose to do so. If there are in fact many good sources, that I wopuld advise you to remove the low-quality, non-independent, primary sources, and replace them with a smaller number of high-quality, independent, secondary, reliable sou7rces each of which includes significant coverage of the company. Is it okay if i create logins with brand email Id and username?

There are additional benefits to having an account, see Wikipedia:Why create an account?, but your username cannot be a brand name or company name, that would violate the username policy. Your username must indicate that a specific individual is exclusively operating your account and gives no one else access to it. You do not need to use your real name(some would say that you shouldn't), you just need something unique to you. 331dot (talk) 09:21, 30 June 2020 (UTC)

You might want to re-read this discussion from last week: Wikipedia:Help desk/Archives/2020 June 22#Delete and recreate My Wikipedia page and the one immediately above it. There are no "extra benefits" to be had, and certainly not by anything having to do with promoting a business. That's not what users are here for. We are here to build an encyclopedia. If you're here to improve any of our 6 million encyclopedia articles, please create an account and help us. If you do not remember your password and did not add an email address to your account, there is no way to regain access to your account. You will need to create a new account and identify it as a successor to your old account ("I am User2, I previously used User1") 331dot (talk) 09:46, 30 June 2020 (UTC)

But there is no connection between a user account and an article. In most cases, any account, and any anonymous editor, may edit any article. The major exception is that if the article is about you (or your company, your employer, your relative, your band, your college, your invention, your novel, your album, your charity ....) then you should not edit the article directly, but should make edit requests concerning it. --ColinFine (talk) 10:17, 30 June 2020 (UTC)

Baking

@41.113.86.187: - while the baking article will give general information, we aren't a "how-to" site. There are both other online sources for specific instructions on how to do something, as well as plenty of books etc. In effect, it's beyond our scope. Nosebagbear (talk) 12:44, 30 June 2020 (UTC)

Problem publishing a translation

Good evening,

I have trouble publishing a translation from french to english. The translation is fully done but Wikipedia won't accept it since I'm not an official contributor (that's what I understood). Does someone has got the accreditation to translate any page and would accept to post a translation for me ?

According to your contributions log, this is your only Wikipedia edit ever. So I don't see where you tried to submit your translation and what reply you got. Can you be more specific? What is this translation of? How and where did you try to submit it? Who told you you are not an official contributor? Wikipedia has no concept of "official contributors" or "accreditation", instead anyone can edit Wikipedia. JIP | Talk 14:14, 30 June 2020 (UTC)

Hi Romaingct, the rules on English Wikipedia might be different to French Wikipedia. On English Wikipedia, only accounts that are auto-confirmed can create new articles- this means your account must be at least 4 days old, and you have at least 10 edits anywhere on English Wikipedia. As you've made 1 edit (the post above), you'll need to make 9 more edits anywhere on English Wikipedia before you can create new articles. Joseph2302 (talk) 14:36, 30 June 2020 (UTC)

No, Joseph2302. If you are editing on behalf of a company, then in English Wikipedia you must declare your status as a Paid editor, and you must also submit your draft for review to articles for creation. I suggest you create it as a draft, Draft:name of company, which you can do right away. Please be aware that the existence of an article in fr-wiki does not guarantee that it will be acceptable in en-wiki. Have you read translation? --ColinFine (talk) 15:11, 30 June 2020 (UTC)

Firstly, when you search for her page, the Wikipedia entry identifies her as "An American Drag Queen"! This could not be more offensive and wrong in my opinion! I would call her an American, LGBTQ+ Activist! Marsha was not a Drag Queen, though she may have identified herself as so at times for lack of a better term to use for people to understand her! Drag implies costume for performance purposes! I am unaware whether she actually participated in any Drag shows, but I do know that she dressed in feminine clothing, wore flower crowns, and identified herself as a woman! If you must include the descriptor, Transgender, then fine, but She MUST be recognized first and foremost as an LGBTQ+ Activist! You do not generally include a person's identified gender or sex on any cis person's information page!

Interstellarity, There are statistics from 2007 at WP:AFD100, generated by Dragons flight, which perhaps you are aware of (or not). Ikip compiled an 'average day' at User:Ikip/AfD on average day based on November 2008. Hut 8.5 compiled image deletion stats from 2008 at User:Hut 8.5/image deletion stats, but that isn't really nominations, it's deletion reasons. Extransit has a list of largest AFDs, last updated in 2011 (not related at all, just interesting). I'm not aware of any newer analysis, and I'm fairly tuned in to this sort of stuff. (I vaguely remember reading somewhere that it's too resource/time-intensive to compile statistics on all AFDs, but cannot remember where). With that said, I'd love to see somebody compile this sort of data (perhaps an updated 100 day analysis?), and I can help out with manual work, but I don't have the technical know-how to write scripts etc. Eddie891 ^Talk _Work 12:33, 1 July 2020 (UTC)

@Jas9777: "information" cannot be copyrighted. "Creative elements" can be copyrighted. If you incorporated "creative elements" from a prior work that was copyrighted (almost all are), then your work is a "derived work". You cannot upload a derived work unless the works from which it derives have licenses such as CC-BY-SA that are compatible with the license we require. If you incorporate such elements, then you are required by their licenses to attribute those elements: a note on the page you create by the upload process will suffice. If you are incorporating information (e.g., data) from other sources, then there is no copyright problem, but you must attribute the sources anyway, to document your image to adhere to our policies, not to their licenses. Wikipedia search results in Spanish (I prefer English)

For the past few months, whenever I perform a google search for something and Wikipedia comes up as the first search result, for some reason the page is always in Spanish. I DO NOT want this as my preferred language. But all my attempts to change the language that automatically comes up back to English have failed. I know some Spanish, but not enough to understand complex things, so please help me to fix this issue on my iPhone. If it is Google returning results in Spanish, then it is probably not a Wikipedia setting. Might be trying to Geolocate you based on internet address or perhaps there is some Google preference you can set. RudolfRed (talk) 23:54, 30 June 2020 (UTC)
