Harv template error

Roswell incident has some errors in the citation list that I don't know how to fix. I couldn't figure it out from Category:Harv and Sfn template errors. How do you go about fixing this sort of error? Note: I want to learn how to fix it, not have someone fix it for me. --Guy Macon (talk) 00:21, 29 April 2021 (UTC)

I'll attempt to give a more detailed explanation. There are three different multiple target errors, all of which are repeated multiple times.

1. This is complaining that there are two separate sources cited by Kendrick Frazier dated 2017 (ref 61 in the text, and the third entry of the sources list), so it doesn't know what to link to. You can resolve this by following the instructions StarryGrandma linked to above, or, if you want something simpler, just adding |ref=none to the numbered ref since the harvnb templates are all intended for the sources section.
2. This is the same problem, with the duplicate entries being ref 26 in the current text and the eleventh entry of the sources list. The fix is the same as above.
3. This is complaining that the source "Saler, Benson; Ziegler, Charles; Moore, Charles (1997). UFO Crash at Roswell: The Genesis of a Modern Myth. Smithsonian Institution Press. ISBN 978-1-56098-751-2." is listed in both the further reading and the sources sections. It should be removed from the further reading section.

I was having a lot of trouble doing the above, which was pretty much what I tried before from reading the help pages. Then I figured it out. The errors don't go way in preview. You have to publish the fix and hop it is correct. Once I did that everything was sorted.[1] Is this a bug which should be reported?

The article is Sky News Arabia. You are strongly advised against editing articles that you're affiliated with - this is a conflict of interest, and covered in this article which explains what you can - and shouldn't - edit when you have a connection to an article.

SIA SPA, use of Buzzword tag

I, I'm an employee of SIA.SPA, I'd like to ask why the tag "buzzword" has been used for the word "solution" in the page of my company: SIA S.p.A.

Solution is simply the "technical solution (implementation) of a business opportunity", so there is nothing obscure about it. "Solution architect" and "solution developer" are well known job titles in the ICT world.

If you click the Buzzword tag it will take to an explanation at WP:BUZZWORD. In a nutshell: "solution" is a vague word and leaves the reader to guess what the actual product and or service is. - X201 (talk) 07:55, 29 April 2021 (UTC)

Genealogy

• the use of the term Starry Heavens, or just Heavens, is from Hesiod. Sky refers to the Azure dome of the Sun not the indigo bowl of limitless stars which is Heaven

I have repeatedly edited the mistranslation of Uranos as Sky in the article Tethys. Yet it does not seem to be accepted. Can you tell me why? Karmstrong909, another user disagrees with your edit, so the next step should be to discuss the issue on the Tethys (mythology) article talk page or the other user's talk page and provide some recent references. Wikipedia is not a site for promotion: it accepts encyclopaedic articles on subjects which meet its criteria for notability: roughly, is there enough reliably published material about Knight, wholly independent of him, to base an article on? Wikipedia is not interested in what the subject of an article says or wants to say about themselves, or what their associates say about them. removing copyright alert boxes

On https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Javier_Esparza which I'm co-editing, an alert box popped up stating it infringes the copyrights of Berkeley, more precisely https://simons.berkeley.edu/people/javier-esparza. This latter page, however, is just the announcement of a visit by Esparza for which author information has been taken straight from his short biography which can be found at https://people.model.in.tum.de/~esparza/bio.html. All the same, we modified our text in order to circumvent this ambiguity.

How can I now contact an administrator to request removing the alert box?

@KeC-Wiki: An administrator will be automatically coming its way sooner or later due to the tag being there. The problem is that neither of the two websites given by you are licensed in any way compatible with Wikipedia, making it a copyright infringment. Thanks for the response. I may add that we have no objection to removing the revisions indicated by the copyvio tag, now that the article has been reworked. Incidentally, the range of revisions indicated by the tag is somewhat too large (1019956014 is where the material was inserted), but I do not mind removing the older editions that were sandbox edits on an unrelated article that arguably do not belong to this article in the first place. -- Rz98 (talk) 11:26, 29 April 2021 (UTC)

Change the username

Hello,

I would like to open up a Wikipedia page for the organization I'm interning for, their name is Legacy17.

However, there is already an existing username with that name, which makes it hard for me to create a page for the organization.

Is there a way I can bypass the already existing username and still create a Wikipedia page with the same name?

Hello Emmi, and Welcome to Wikipedia. First of all, your username doesn't need to be the same as the article, in fact, Usernames consisting soely of Group names and role accounts names are not allowed. Something like "Emmi at Legacy17" would be allowed, however, since you shouldn't use that username after your internship ends, it might be a good Idea to use something different. Second, since you are an intern, you are within the scopes of a WP:COI and WP:PAID-declaration. Third, creating a new article (Not just page; a page can be anything here, including this very thing you are on right now) is one of the hardest tasks on Wikipedia. The following steps should help you in creating one:

• First, review our guideline on notability, our policy on Verifiability, and our general notability guideline (GNG). Consider whether your subject clearly meets the standards listed there. Also, check if the topic is already covered, perhaps under a different spelling or in a section of an article about a wider topic. You will waste a lot of time, if you create a new article, and then find that the encyclopedia already has an article about that.
• Second, read how to create Your First Article and referencing for beginners and again consider if you want to go ahead.
• Third, If you have any connection or affiliation with the subject, disclose it in accordance with our guideline on Conflict of interest. If you have been or expect to be paid for making edits, or are making them as part of your job, disclose this according to the strict rules of the Paid-contribution disclosure. This is absolutely required; omitting it can result in you being blocked from further editing.
• Fourth, gather sources. You want independent, professionally published, reliable sources with each discussing the subject in some detail. If you can't find several such sources, stop; an article will not be created! Sources do NOT need to be online, or in English, although it is helpful if at least some are. The "independent" part is vital. Wikipedia does not consider as independent sources such as press releases, or news stories based on press releases, or anything published by the subject itself or an affiliate of the subject. Strictly local coverage is also not preferred. Regional or national newspapers or magazines, books published by mainstream publishers (not self-published), or scholarly journals are usually good. So are online equivalents of these. (Additional sources may verify particular statements but not discuss the subject in detail. But those significant detailed sources are needed first.)
• Fifth, use the article wizard to create a draft under the articles for creation project. This is always a good idea for an inexperienced editor, but in the case of an editor with a conflict of interest it is essential.
• Sixth, use the sources gathered before (and other sources you may find along the way) to write the article. Cite all significant statements to sources. Do not express opinions or judgements, unless they are explicitly attributed to named people or entities, preferably in a direct quotation, and cited to a source. Do not use puffery or marketing-speak. Provide page numbers, dates, authors and titles for sources to the extent these are available. A title is always needed. Submit the draft when you think it is ready for review. Be prepared to wait a while for a review (several weeks or more).
• Seventh, when (well perhaps if) your draft is declined, pay attention to the comments of the reviewer, and correct the draft and resubmit it. During this whole process, if you face any unresolvable editing hurdles, or cannot comprehend any editing issue, feel free to post a request at the Teahouse or the help desk and ask the regulars. Repeat this until the draft passes review.

Congratulations, you have now created a valid Wikipedia article.

Commander of the Air Force (Sri Lanka) page to be updated.

Dear Wikipedia, I am an official of the Directorate of Media at the Air Force Headquarters in Sri Lanka. I have an official responsibility to maintain information regarding the Commander of the Air Force (Sri Lanka). Further, the page related to the current Commander of the Air Force also needs to be updated. The page which I am referring to in Sudarshana Pathirana. I have tried on many occasion to edit the said pages. But after a priod of time they have reverted back what was there before my editing.

Is there a formal way for me to gain access to the below mentioned pages in order to keep the information on them up to date and accurate.

Day of the year pages now partitioned by relation to 20th century.

Hi there. I noticed just today that when selecting the article for April 29, the contents are now divided into: “Pre-20th Century”, “20th Century”, and “21st Century”. I’ve poked around looking for the Talk page or discussion around this change (none of this pre/post twentieth century heading business used to exist on the day of the year pages), but I’ve been unable to find one. I’d like to see the reasoning for introducing this change. Can someone help me find where such a discussion may have taken place?

Hello. It looks as if Ivogusa added those headings into April 28 about ten hours ago, and has done the same for a couple of other days over the past few days (though April 29 was edited by a user who wasn't logged in). Wierd userbox thing I don't understand.

Was looking at Wikipedia:Userboxes/Music/Albums/02, and if you check the bottom, something seriously screws up the formatting, and makes the page into this mess:

Template:Yy Template:Yyend

Music albums S through Z
Template:Yytab

Wikipedia:Userboxes/Interests/footer

I seriously don't understand why this is happening. I've narrowed down the problem to this UBX: User:UBX/User The Sufferer & the Witness. If I remove it from the page, the bottom renders fine. I checked the UBX and it seems completely normal and the same as the similar ones, so I totally don't understand what's going on. Thanks to any who can help! This is caused by the page exceeding the post-expand include size limit. The problem has nothing to do with that userbox in particular, but it is merely the straw that broke the camel's back. * Pppery * _{it has begun...} 19:33, 29 April 2021 (UTC)

@Pppery: Ohhhh I see. That means I broke it haha, because I just made a userbox and wanted to add it. What do you suggest I do? Just leave my userbox off?

Another solution, if you are up for it, would be to do some reorganizing, and move userboxes for albums starting with the letter "R" to Wikipedia:Userboxes/Music/Albums/03, and then move userboxes for albums starting with letters W-Z to Wikipedia:Userboxes/Music/Albums/04, thereby freeing up space for your userbox to be added. * Pppery * _{it has begun...} 19:48, 29 April 2021 (UTC)

How do I add spouse?

I'm seriously at a loss here. I am trying to add a spouse to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fefe_Dobson, and I am using her husband (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yelawolf) as a template, so I copy "| spouse={{marriage|[[Fefe Dobson]]|2019}}", and replace her name with his, then enter it in the background information box, then when I go to preview, I see this message: "Warning: Page using Template:Infobox musical artist with unknown parameter "background" (this message is shown only in preview)." — Preceding unsigned comment added by Dan33185 (talk • contribs) 20:20, 29 April 2021 (UTC)

Hi Dan33185, the issue is not with the parameter that you're adding, which should be fine. It's that the current infobox at Fefe Dobson has |background = solo_singer because "background" is not a supported parameter. You can go ahead and remove that "background" parameter. Even if you ignore it and go ahead and publish the page with your "spouse" parameter, the error will only show up in Preview mode. DanCherek (talk) 20:29, 29 April 2021 (UTC)

@Dan33185: No, the issue was that you needed to invoke Infobox Person as a child in Infobox Musical Artist. That's what happens in the Yelawolf article. I've fixed the issue now. Citation template for theatre programme

We don't appear to have a dedicated template for theatre programmes, so what would be the best one to use to cite information (such as the names of the performers) contained in such a programme? Neither {{Cite book}} nor {{Cite magazine}} seem ideal - do we fallback to {{Cite web}}, even though the information wasn't originally published on a website? Thanks - just to clarify, does the fact that a person's name appears in the cast list in a programme produced by the theatre at which a play was produced count as a reliable source for the fact that they appeared in that play? If not, my question is moot. Tevildo (talk) 18:30, 30 April 2021 (UTC)

Yes, Tevildo, it would; a notable theatre's program for its own work would be considered the equivalent of an SPS speaking wrt itself. If the theatre/production was non-notable, some might ask questions based on that, rather than the program itself. ——Serial 18:34, 30 April 2021 (UTC)

Trouble with templates

in Template:Tibet topics there are some links which I can't fix to point to the target. They are "Politics" (points to Politics of Tibet, should point to List of modern political leaders of Tibet), "Government" (points to Government of Tibet, should point to Tibet#Government), and "Culture" (points to Culture of Tibet, should point to Tibetan culture). They all do point to the target, via redirects so there really is no problem to fix. The template {{Country topics}} automatically creates links like "Politics of xxxx" and since there is no article Politics of Tibet, someone had created a redirect there to get to List of modern political leaders of Tibet. There is also a way to override this using |politics_link=, which I have done, and for "Government" as well. But this is not supported for "Culture", so that will need a template change, or just live with the redirect. MB 23:27, 29 April 2021 (UTC)

Per WP:NAVNOREDIRECT, it's preferred to avoid redirects in navboxes if they are transcluded on the target where a redirect will not make a bold self-link. But one redirect back to Tibetan culture isn't worth editing a template with 20,000 transclusions. PrimeHunter (talk) 00:11, 30 April 2021 (UTC)
