Changing background color in a row of a table

edit

I would like to highlight a row in seats table of Opinion polling for the next Dutch general election. Actually, the last row (2017 election). currently it reads |- style="background:#E9E9E9". When I change that to e.g. |- style="background:#808080" nothing seems to change. --FantinoFalco (talk) 03:17, 26 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@FantinoFalco: I fixed the table in this edit to ensure the style command is on the same line as the data you want changed. Now if you change it to #808080, you'll see a change (which looks too dark to me). Happy editing!
Thanks a lot. (#808080 was just meant as example. Will play around)--FantinoFalco (talk) 04:10, 26 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@GoingBatty: Why is it only changing the background of one cell instead of the entire row? --FantinoFalco (talk) 04:27, 26 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@FantinoFalco: Oh, sorry! I thought you wanted different cells in the bottom row to be different colors. Looks like you originally had the code correct per Help:Table#Color; scope of parameters. Hopefully another editor can jump in and help. GoingBatty (talk) 04:37, 26 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@FantinoFalco: The table uses Help:Table#mw-datatable – row highlighting via cursor hover. White background. I don't know whether there is a way to override it in a row styling. PrimeHunter (talk) 09:06, 26 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Inappropriate Comment

edit

Re: https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Training_modules/Keeping_events_safe/Discussion_hub

In the section titled 'Board Member Behaviour' PatraKing has left a comment that is reflective of victim-blaming and rape-culture. This makes it unsafe for women and victims of sexual assault. What is the best way to deal with this? I am particularly concerned given this is connected to a training model about keeping people safe from harrassment. Thanks--DrMushEa (talk) 03:33, 26 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@DrMushEa: If you cannot resolve it with direct communication with the user, try meta:Meta:Requests for help from a sysop or bureaucrat. GoingBatty (talk) 04:26, 26 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Merging + re-creating original page?

edit

I would like to merge most of the contents of the page Sahar, Yemen into Sahar District, since they mostly are about the district, which is completely unrelated to the town (they're in separate governorates). I would then like to re-create a page for the town. The merge process itself is daunting enough, but I'm especially hesitant to create the merge target as a separate article again. Are any extra steps required to do so after merging a page?

Thanks,

3 kids in a trenchcoat (talk) 04:58, 26 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@3 kids in a trenchcoat: Nothing special that I know of. Just document what you are doing on both talk pages. I don't think you even need to do a technical merge (history merge, etc.) Just copy/paste the material to be moved from the town inot the district with the appropriate edit summary and then delete that material from the town article, and then continue to improve the town article. -Arch dude (talk) 06:11, 26 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Creating a Street map with marks for London Wall

edit

Hi! I have been looking through the different map options wiki has and I think the Street map with marks template would offer the best solution for the London Wall page as it would directly reflect on the data within Wikidata. The template, however, doesn't have an example I can understand to link directly to a dataset within Wikidata. It would be great if anyone could outline what needs to be written to create this, create an outline of the code on the page itself, or if a more detailed example outlining how to directly link to a data entry within Wikidata could be added to the template so I can follow it I would be extremely grateful! Jamzze (talk) 09:38, 26 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Jamzze:, There's an example of a medieval wall plotted onto a modern streetmap at Template:OSM Location map#Alternative marks, with a description of how to do it at User:J. Johnson/OSM overlay how-to. That doesn't do the "link to wikidata" thing you're asking about, but I thought I'd mention it in case you hadn't found it yourself. Somebody vandalize Grandhi Srinivas with thumb v vkzd vl, lf ; d. c c;lc vlkdmvsd /d . Please fix it. Rizosome (talk) 13:29, 26 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Rizosome, I have reverted this. In future you can do this yourself by clicking on the "view history" tab and clicking "undo" on the edit. PrincessPersnickety (talk) 13:42, 26 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Rizosome: Hello and thank you for pointing this out. As noted it has been 'fixed' by PrincessPersnickety but as they pointed out you could easily have done so yourself. You have been here for nearly three months now and have almost 400 edits but only 2 to mainspace. It is not necessarily a bad thing to ask lots of questions, but the help desk is here to tell you 'how' to do things, not really for editing requests. Getting experience by editing is probably the best way to learn. Do not worry too much about making mistakes; most of us did (and still do!) – as long as you remember what was 'wrong' for future reference. Cheers. Lew Krausse Jr.

Can you fix the error i made please About Lew Krause Jr. 68.102.42.216 (talk) 14:39, 26 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I fixed the broken cite template in 2021 in baseball (it was missing a title= before the title), and the broken link it contained. Hopefully that was the error you were talking about. In future, please wikilink to the page and describe the problem you need fixing. Chuntuk (talk) 15:03, 26 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I DONT HAVE A QUESTION BUT RATHER A STATEMENT OF FACT. THE EXODUS OF THE ISRAELITES OUT OF EYGPT IS NOT A "MYTH." — Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.255.192.25 (talk) 17:02, 26 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Please discuss on the article's talk page. TimTempleton (talk) (cont) 17:21, 26 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Please read our article on Myth to understand how that term is used in an academic context, as opposed to the lay understanding of "myth" as a story that is untrue. ~ ONUnicorn(Talk|Contribs)problem solving 17:47, 26 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Myth: "A traditional story which embodies a belief regarding some fact or phenomenon of experience, and in which often the forces of nature and of the soul are personified; a sacred narrative regarding a god, a hero, the origin of the world or of a people, etc." Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 17:49, 26 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
It is definitely a myth that they left "Eygpt", also "Epygt", "Egpyt" ... Clarityfiend (talk) 04:27, 27 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Is WikiSource a reliable source?

edit

An anonymous editor added material to the article Finland under Swedish rule, with this source from WikiSource. Is this allowed? Can WikiSource be used as a reliable source? JIP | Talk 22:50, 26 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Wikisource basically republishes public domain texts. It is not itself the source, the source would be Svea Rikes historia, the document Wikisource is hosting. I don't know if Svea Rikes historia meets reliable source guidelines or not, but I see nothing wrong with providing the Wikisource link to it as a convenience to the reader. However, it should be cited as Svea Rikes historia, not cited as Wikisource. ~ ONUnicorn(Talk|Contribs)problem solving 23:16, 26 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I've reformatted the reference, but someone more familiar with the language could probably add some missing fields, like the publisher. ~ ONUnicorn(Talk|Contribs)problem solving 23:22, 26 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
It's like, YouTube is not a source. It hosts videos from other sources. If CNN (a reliable source) posts a clip to YouTube, CNN is the source, not YouTube. You can include a link to the YouTube clip, but you cite CNN. ~ ONUnicorn(Talk|Contribs)problem solving 23:25, 26 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
JIP, it's a 18th century history-book. At best it can be used for "According to Olof von Dalin..." Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 09:44, 27 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Gråbergs Gråa Sång That's how it's being used in the article. ~ ONUnicorn(Talk|Contribs)problem solving 04:25, 1 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, I saw that (after making that comment). So far, so good. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 08:19, 1 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Struments against vandalism

edit

Hi. I hate vandalism and I would like figth him. I have not rollbacker rights but can I use the struments against the vandalism? Dr Salvus (talk) 23:38, 26 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hello again, Dr Salvus. I'm afraid that, since "struments" is not an English word, I don't know what you are referring to. Please clarify your question. --ColinFine (talk) 23:45, 26 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
ColinFine, I think Dr Salvus means using Wikipedia's tools for combatting vandalism. TSventon (talk) 00:38, 27 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@ColinFine: Hi. I'm not an English native speaker and therefore I made this kind of (stupid) errors 😅 Dr Salvus (talk) 00:56, 27 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@TSventon: Yes, i mean the "tools" word. Unfortunately I "love" doing

Pindaric flight Dr Salvus (talk) 01:03, 27 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Dr Salvus you could use Google translate to check your posts on talk pages. I have used it myself when visiting other Wikipedias. TSventon (talk) 01:18, 27 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@TSventon: thank you very much, but could you answer to my question? Dr Salvus (talk) 01:21, 27 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Dr Salvus I don't know much about fighting vandalism: I have a watchlist and I revert vandalism on pages I watch, without using any special tools. I can point you to Wikipedia:Vandalism, but you have hopefully found it already. It links to Wikipedia:Twinkle and Wikipedia:RedWarn, neither of which have I used. TSventon (talk) 01:34, 27 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Dr Salvus: Check out WP:CVA for training to fight vandalism. You can get paired with an experienced editor for training. RudolfRed (talk) 01:46, 27 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@RudolfRed: How can I take part to WP:CVA Dr Salvus (talk) 09:39, 27 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
See under "Participation". Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 10:21, 27 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

If you find a piece of vandalism through your watchlist or the history of the article and if it is the top entry for the article it is very easy to click "undo." Spinney Hill (talk) 10:13, 27 February 2021 (UTC) Spinney Hill (talk) 10:30, 27 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
