User-provided translations of foreign terms

edit

One of the current WP:DYK items caught my eye:

"Most Hyped Boxer" sounded like a very strange name for an award. In fact, the citation in the article is in Turkish, and "Most Hyped Boxer" is presumably tr-n / en-3 User:CeeGee's own translation of the Turkish term en dövüşken sporcu. Now of course these sorts of user-translated glosses appear frequently in Wikipedia, so that's presumably not a problem in and of itself. But, while I don't speak Turkish and thus can't comment on the accuracy, no one else seems to have translated it that way and to my ear (no offense intended!) it just doesn't sound like a tonally-appropriate English translation for an official award name.

So my question is - are there any guidelines on this? Are there any situations where a Wikipedian-provided translation ISN'T appropriate (I could imagine this being the sort of area where the Main Page might have a higher standard)? If you do come across one of these translations and think it seems "off," but can't actually confirm that or improve it yourself because you don't speak the relevant language, where and how would be good to bring it up? Thanks. -Elmer Clark (talk) 00:36, 27 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Elmer Clark: perhaps ask the right folks over at Wikipedia:Translators available. -Arch dude (talk) 01:05, 27 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Korean names

edit

Hello! Could someone tell me what the title should be for a draft on Seung Woo Back? And perhaps how to mention the family name in the article? The artist's web site also gives Seung Woo, Baek as his name. American museums say "Seung Woo Back": 1 and 2. Thank you. --- Possibly 02:42, 27 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Possibly: I'd go with WP:COMMONNAME, depending on what the majority of English reliable sources refer to him as. I personally prefer Baek Seung Woo, and if you want to go this route, {{family name hatnote}} can help you there. —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 03:26, 27 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I want to add the club logo to Delhi FC but I am not able to upload the logo in </ref>https://en.m.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Wikipedia:File_Upload_Wizard&withJS=MediaWiki:FileUploadWizard.js<ref> under upload a non free file. Can you guide me thanks Bharat0078 (talk)Bharat0078

@Bharat0078: Hi there! What happens when you try to upload the logo using the Wikipedia:File Upload Wizard? GoingBatty (talk) 03:23, 27 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

It just refresh the same page nothing else happens. :@GoingBatty:Bharat0078 (talk)

@Bharat0078: Another alternative is to try Wikipedia:Files for upload instead. GoingBatty (talk) 03:44, 27 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Duplicate articles

edit

Two articles were created today on the same subject: Isadora Rodrigues Pacheco and Isidora Pacheco. The common name in sources is the latter, but the former was created first. How do we tackle this? JTtheOG (talk) 04:37, 27 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Actually, according to the one and only source in the article, her surname is Rodrigues Pacheco, not Pacheco. --Orange Mike | Talk 04:51, 27 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

IP user quickly reverts bots

edit

I found [a peculiar IP user] who has in several instances, albeit spaced out by several months, reverted a few bot edits adding Internet Archive links. I [reverted one] on an article I have edited in the past and that needed Archive links (the new ones just redirect to a homepage). This IP hasn't been warned before, so I don't know that it's ready to be reported to WP:AIV yet, but if the IP is making changes to bots this fast I don't know if warnings are needed, or how to word a warning if so. How should I proceed? Thank you! Tonystewart14 (talk) 04:44, 27 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

The user is making matters worse for us by not using any edit summaries. I've reverted their last such edit and left a message on their Talk page. If it happens again and you are unable to discern any benefit from the edit, feel free to leave {{subst:uw-disruptive1}}.--Quisqualis (talk) 02:49, 28 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I want to display language selector on the personal toolbar like Commons and Meta

edit

Language Selector on Wikimedia Commons

Hello. I've seen a language selector on the left-hand side of my personal toolbar on Commons and Meta. So I want to display it in the same position, in the same function, and in the same view as these two wikis. But I couldn't find the code that makes it display(maybe the code is JavaScript code...?). Could you tell me about it? I used a machine translation so perhaps I didn't communicate it well, but please don't hesitate to ask me back if that's the case. Thank you. --TKsdik8900 (talk) 06:34, 27 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

It wouldn't work for much besides Meta and Commons, as all other projects have their languages separate from each other. —A little blue Bori v^_^v Jéské Couriano 06:56, 27 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Jéské Couriano: (Thank you for your reply.) This selector changes the language of the project's UI. You can change the language from English to any other languages at Special:Preferences > Internationalisation. --TKsdik8900 (talk) 07:25, 27 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@TKsdik8900: Commons and Meta have multiple languages in the same wiki, meaning both user interface and some of the content by editors is translated. Compare for example https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Clementines_(01014)s.jpg?uselang=de and https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Clementines_(01014)s.jpg?uselang=en. I don't know whether there is a way to get a language selector on every page in a single-language wiki like the English Wikipedia where it would only affect the user interface. Manually adding ?uselang= or &uselang= to the url is easier than changing preferences if you only want to see the current page with another interface language and you know the language code. PrimeHunter (talk) 10:53, 27 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
You may be interested in User:PrimeHunter/English interface.js. You could also make your own version with multiple selected languages. PrimeHunter (talk) 10:56, 27 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Monegasque / Monégasque

edit

There are some article titles with the spelling "Monégasque" (here) and some with the spelling "Monegasque" (without the diacritic) (here). All categories use the latter spelling (here). Both spellings are in general use, but the article on the Monégasque language consistently uses the diacritic. In such a case, is it desirable to make the spelling consistent across titles by moving pages, or would that cause more harm than good? I couldn't find any guidance on this at MOS:SPELLING because it deals only with national varieties of English, which isn't what this is. Joriki (talk) 09:49, 27 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Joriki: - I'm in favour of using diacritics. We have the technology nowadays so we should use it. I don't see how correcting Monegasque to Monégasque can be seen as unconstructive as long as its in the body of an article and not in a direct quote or reference. Might be worth posting at the talk page of the relevant WikiProject (WP:MICROSTATE) to see what the feeling is about moving articles from a non-diacritic title to one with a diacritic. Mjroots (talk) 12:42, 27 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Joriki: I would recommend a discussion as there are a lot of articles and categories and suggest WP:EUROPE as the WP:MICROSTATE talk page seems to be in active. Whichever is preferred, you could ask at Wikipedia talk:Categories for discussion if it is possible to tag the categories using WP:AWB. TSventon (talk) 12:58, 28 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Mjroots: @TSventon: Thanks for your replies. I've posted at WP:EUROPE. Joriki (talk) 06:16, 29 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Joriki:, a minor detail: you haven't searched for Monegasque / Monégasque when they are not at the beginning of the category name, e.g. subcategories of Category:Monégasque sport by decade and Category:Monégasque sport by year. TSventon (talk) 06:40, 29 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

A question about reliable sources

edit

Hello! I have a question about the article https://www.scholarship.edu.vn/trungquoc/wiki/en/Draft:RATESDOTCA. I would be very grateful if you could help me. The article was sent back for revision due to inappropriate links. Quote: "This submission's references do not show that the subject qualifies for a Wikipedia article-that is, they do not show significant coverage (not just passing mentions) about the subject in published, reliable, secondary sources that are independent of the subject."

I have read a lot of information, but please help me understand: 1) How can I tell if the site I'm referring to is appropriate? There are paid services to check the rating of sites - will this check be reliable in this case? Or is there some other way to tell if I can link to a certain site? 2) A question about the definition of "reliable source". It says here (https://www.scholarship.edu.vn/trungquoc/wiki/en/Wikipedia:Verifiability#Reliable_sources) states that this can be the material itself (an article or a book). But how exactly do I know that it is reliable?

Please help me to understand how to do everything according to the rules. I will be very grateful for your help. Have a nice day. — Preceding unsigned comment added by SvetlanaManuilova (talkcontribs) 13:17, 27 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@SvetlanaManuilova: It appears you have found a draft article on a Wikipedia mirror site, which duplicates the content of the English Wikipedia with advertising. You can choose to view the English Wikipedia there or here. I don't know what "paid services" you are referring to. Reliable sources have a reputation for fact-checking and accuracy - see Wikipedia:Reliable sources for more information. GoingBatty (talk) 13:37, 27 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
GoingBatty, it sounds like the user paid WikiCurators and BettytheBeth to create an article for them. Bkissin (talk) 13:44, 27 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Autobiography

edit

Good day, I have an account with wikipedia and would love to have my autobiography on wikipedia. What are the steps involved and how long would it take?— Preceding unsigned comment added by Fajembola (talkcontribs)

Not a good idea. Please read WP:AUTOBIOGRAPHY. -Arch dude (talk) 14:45, 27 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Fajembola Wikipedia is not a place for people to tell the world about themselves. A Wikipedia article about you would need to summarize what independent reliable sources with significant coverage have chosen on their own to say about you, showing how you meet Wikipedia's special definition of a notable person. Most people have great difficulty with doing that about themselves. It is strongly discouraged, though not forbidden. If you just want to tell the world about yourself, you should use social media or a personal website. 331dot (talk) 15:02, 27 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I will add that a Wikipedia article is not necessarily desirable. 331dot (talk) 15:03, 27 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Fajembola: Learning how to use Wikipedia, gathering reliable sources, writing a draft, and having your draft rejected multiple times before it gets approved can take many many months. The steps are at Help:Your first article. GoingBatty (talk) 19:06, 27 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Changing category names

edit

Hi there, I recently created the category "African American equestrians." However, I know realize it should be "African-American equestrians," with a hyphen. How do I change that? I don't see a "move" option. Thanks!

EponineBunnyKickQueen (talk) 19:23, 27 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hi EponineBunnyKickQueen. According to WP:MOVE, more specifically the "How to move a category" section, only editors with a special permission are allowed to move categories. It is recommended you use the Speedy Renaming policy to have the category "renamed" (this category falls under the C2C criteria). Isabelle 🔔 19:32, 27 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Deleted Page

edit

Hello, I was editing a page yesterday for LJ Klink, trying to return to the page today it was deleted. How can we get this back? What do we need to do? Hoping we didn't lose all of the content.

Thank you, Kellisa Kulm Kellisakulm (talk) 22:12, 27 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

What is your connexion to LJ Klink? —A little blue Bori v^_^v Jéské Couriano 22:14, 27 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Why do you say "we", Kellisakulm? (How many of you are there?) Incidentally, a quotation from the deleted article: He grew up with cooking in his veins from learning fractions with his Grandma Klink, to spending hours in the dish tank at the family restaurant Klink's on the Lake. -- Hoary (talk) 08:59, 28 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
To expand a bit on what Hoary said, Kelisakulm, a Wikipedia article (not just a "page" should be a neutral summary of what sources unconnected with the subject have published about them. Wikipedia is not interested in what the subject of an article says or wants to say about themselves, or what their associates say about them. Wikipedia is only interested in what people who have no connection with the subject, and who have not been prompted or fed information on behalf of the subject, have chosen to publish about the subject in reliable sources. THe sentence Hoary quoted doesn't belong in any encyclopaedia. Please read WP:42, WP:NBIO and, if you think that Klink meets Wikipedia's criteria for notability, WP:YFA. As Jéské Couriano says, if you have any connection with Klink you need to read about WP:COI and make an appropriate declaration. --ColinFine (talk) 10:34, 28 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

kaffir lime

edit

https://slate.com/culture/2014/07/kaffir-lime-racist-murky-origins-suggest-a-racial-slur-might-be-responsible-for-the-fruits-name.html

Please see the link above for an article on the use of the word 'kaffir' which to certain groups is a racial slur. Please see the Wikipedia page titled 'kaffir limes'. This editor added a link on the 'kaffir lime' page to the above article and one sentence stating that the word was a racial slur. It was promptly removed with the reason that the page was a "botanical page". For future reference, which racial slurs are allowed on botanical pages and which are not? Thanks in advance.— Preceding unsigned comment added by Quantumkinetics (talkcontribs) 22:52, 27 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Quantumkinetics. I've checked the article's history and the editor who reverted you left the following message: "I think this is excessive for the lead, this is a botanical article and there is a section that discusses the controversial name." Currently the page already has a subsection "Name" (not to be confused with the section "Names"!) that gives a short explanation of kaffir as a slur, as well as wikilinking it to a page with even more content. If you still think that the article's lede should contain some information about that, I recommend using the talk page or contacting the person who reverted you directly.
