Two questions about article grading

edit
  1. As I prepare to send an article to WP:GAN, is it acceptable to contact an editor (individually at their talk page) for their opinion of the article? If it is acceptable, which type of editors should I pick? If no, is there any alternatives to WP:Peer review that I can use?
  2. Is there a template that centralises requests for re-grading an article?

Thank you and please ping on reply. NotReallySoroka (talk) 05:11, 12 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@NotReallySoroka, you can probably ask somebody, but you have to make sure that you aren't burdening them. Why don't you want to use peer review?

Can't find Wikidata page of a person/article

edit

Hi. Why Toni Storm does not have a page on Wikidata? Would someone please create her page there?

Have you tried https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q27049393 MilborneOne (talk) 08:37, 12 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Mann Mann, that's d:Q27049393 for short. (So she has an entry. But if she hadn't, this would probably be because no human or bot had yet got around to creating one.) -- Hoary (talk) 08:41, 12 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@MilborneOne and Hoary: Her name is wrong there and that was the reason why I didn't find the entry. I will correct her data. Thanks for the help. --Mann Mann (talk) 08:44, 12 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
That's a bit surprising, Mann Mann. I'd never heard of her. I went to Wikidata, searched there for "Toni Storm", and was shown entry d:Q27049393. This ESPN story is evidence that her real-life name is Toni Rossall: do cite this when you revise the Wikidata entry. -- Hoary (talk) 09:56, 12 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Hoary: Because she is a professional wrestler, and professional wrestling has become a niche entertainment. Seems only wrestling fans and members of WikiProject Professional Wrestling visit, read, and edit PW articles. Cheers! --Mann Mann (talk) 10:08, 12 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Mann Mann: If an article is connected to Wikidata then it has a "Wikidata item" link under "Tools" in the left pane of the desktop site. PrimeHunter (talk) 11:20, 12 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@PrimeHunter: Ahhh... why I was so careless?! Very helpful, thank you. --Mann Mann (talk) 11:34, 12 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Revert vandalism

edit

please revert the vandalism regarding names and show descriptions on total wipeout immediately. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 81.178.75.46 (talk) 08:10, 12 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

The Oversighters can remove personal information from edits, if that's what you're talking about. If you'd like to request some personal info removed, go to the Requests for oversight page and try contacting one there. I don't quite know what you mean about the descriptions though. (If you're referring to short descriptions, they can be enabled on Desktop with some widgets.) Explodicator7331 (talk) 13:24, 12 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

i mean on revert vandalism on Total Wipeout. please do so immideatly regarding the above topics— Preceding unsigned comment added by 81.178.75.46 (talk)

Please sign your posts with four tildes (~~~~) so we know that you wrote them. There hasn't been any recent edits to that article, so you are going to need to be much more specific about the issue you see. 331dot (talk) 13:49, 12 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Looks like the vandalism was kindly reverted by X201. Thanks for reporting the issue! GoingBatty (talk) 14:52, 12 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Proper Format to Add Citations in the Inbox

edit

Hey y'all, I tried adding these three citations to the Persian language page in the infobox:

https://plc.sas.upenn.edu/persian

https://www.langcen.cam.ac.uk/resources/langp/persian.html

https://worldpopulationreview.com/country-rankings/what-countries-speak-farsi

Of course, I broke the page by accident. You can check out the format I used on the Persian language page which incidently broke it. Anyone know how I can add these to the "Native to" section in the infobox without completely ruining it?

Thanks. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Windafarna (talkcontribs) 18:15, 12 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Windafarna. You managed to get <ref> and the </ref> the wrong way round between your first and second addition. So instead of closing the first ref and starting a new one, you essentially put an empty ref in the middle of the-ref-that-contained-your-first-two-urls.
However, please do not use bare URLs for references: see WP:REFB for how to format them properly. ColinFine (talk) 20:38, 12 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for help! I've gone and put the citations there and thank god I didn't break the page this time, and the citations aren't bare either but are formatted. Appreciate your help and advice. Windafarna (talk) 22:53, 12 May 2022 (UTC)Windafarna[reply]

Recent Deaths

edit

Once again the English language Wikipedia has a bunch of who's that's on the RD section and has skipped NBA Great Bob Lanier's passing. A person noted for his humanitarian work. I request that his name be added ASAP so that the world may shed a tear or two along with his family. Please see to it that this is done quickly. RJCamp21. thank you

RJCamp21 Please sign your posts with four tildes(~~~~). Recent Deaths can only post what is nominated. Please make a nomination at WP:ITNC. 331dot (talk) 18:26, 12 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Rjcamp21: He was nominated and posted yesterday [1] at Wikipedia:In the news/Candidates#(Posted) RD: Bob Lanier. He was removed after 27 hours to give main page time for other recent deaths.[2] PrimeHunter (talk) 18:58, 12 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Rjcamp21, your tone is a little "brusque". The Help Desk is for editors to get help editing WP, although we do see a lot of requests (and demands) for the experienced editors here to do something, and often to do something right now. It looks like your request was handled. WP is not meant to be a breaking news source -- the world can mourn his passing even before the info is added here. Thanks. 73.127.147.187 (talk) 08:24, 13 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Also, not to pile on, but please understand that WP does not have anyone assigning areas to work on, or to make sure that certain things are not missed. All of the editors are volunteers, and each editor chooses what to work on. Maybe none of the editors who were active in the one or two days between his passing, and your request, were interested in basketball or noticed that he had passed. Perhaps they had other things they wanted to work on. Anyway, it's done now. Cheers. 73.127.147.187 (talk) 08:32, 13 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@RJCamp21- The help desk is not a forum for you to complain about the main page. Whether you consider that guy notable or not, you can't just make people do it here. This is not the place to nominate someone. This is, however, the place where editors get help with editing. As PrimeHunter said, he was already there.
Asparagusus (interaction) 13:35, 13 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Also, Bob Lanier is literally listed on the recent deaths right now (albeit he'll be the next one to roll off when someone else is added). They're ordered by date of posting (which is when the article is nominated at WP:ITNC and then good enough to be posted on front page), not by date of death or any sort of perceived importance. Joseph2302 (talk) 13:40, 13 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Also, it does look like Lanier was taken off and then re-added later on for some reason. Which is why it wasn't there at time of nomination, but is there now. Joseph2302 (talk) 13:46, 13 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

How do people have access to recent articles when they are not on the web?

edit

For example, here on Pierre Poilievre#40th Parliament it says in the second paragraph, "Poilievre became referred to as the Conservative Party's "attack dog"" with three citations, none of them linked. I can't even find them on the web so how do people cite them? Ak-eater06 (talk) 20:52, 12 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

The citations are to articles published in 2009-2011, they aren't 'recent'. As for how they were accessed, libraries often keep copies of publications. Wikipedia has no requirement that sources have to be accessible online. AndyTheGrump (talk) 21:06, 12 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
A quick search of the article title and publication name turned up links to 2 of the 3, so I've added those to the citations just to make everyone's life easier. But as was mentioned, WP:OFFLINE sources are acceptable. VernoWhitney (talk) 21:10, 12 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Kindle

edit

Amazon did an update to kindle. Now my Wikipedia won’t work. Why? They said it was your problem. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.121.162.69 (talk) 21:46, 12 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hello. The people who hang out here generally know about editing, not user interfaces or underlying software. I suggest asking at WP:VPT. ColinFine (talk) 22:32, 12 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
