Is there guidance on writing a draft for location that's currently a redirect

edit

I am preparing to write a draft article for a location that is currently a redirect to another article, but is, at least in my view, independently notable. Is there guidance for writing a draft that would require a technical move request to be moved to article space? TartarTorte 01:10, 12 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @TartarTorte, generally the {{Db-move|page to be moved|reason}} template under WP:G6 is used instead of a technical move request. Hope this helps! Justiyaya 01:40, 12 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks Justiyaya. Sounds like that's an easy enough way to do things. TartarTorte 12:34, 12 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@TartarTorte: I don't think it's any different from writing any other article: gather multiple independent reliable sources that have provided significant coverage of the subject, and determine whether it meets Wikipedia's notability criteria. If it does, then could follow the instructions at Help:Your first article. If the redirect used to be an article, you can look at the history to see the last version of the article. Hope this helps, and happy editing! GoingBatty (talk) 02:39, 12 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Hi, TartarTorte - I agree with GoingBatty. To clarify: when you submit your draft for review and a reviewer accepts it, they will sort out what the redirect. ColinFine (talk) 10:07, 12 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Protect Page Request

edit

To Whom It May Concern,

How can one make a request to protect a page due to vandalism? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 45.49.241.84 (talk) 03:13, 12 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

You can find instructions at Requests for Page Protection. Ks0stm (TCGE) 03:15, 12 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Edinburgh West (UK Parliament constituency)

edit

Hi,

On the page Edinburgh West (UK Parliament constituency), the name "Scotland" is missing from the map caption. It should read "Boundary of Edinburgh West in Scotland". Thanks. 145.15.244.231 (talk) 06:33, 12 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Want to add audio on a wikipedia

edit

Hii,

I want to add music audio on a wikipedia article. I've seen some articles where there are music audio provided with them along with their photos. However, I don't have any idea how to do that or where to bring and add that audio. Can someone plz help me? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Arorapriyansh333 (talkcontribs) 11:06, 12 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

It depends to some extent on whether the audio is copyrighted. If it is not copyrighted, you can make the clip as long as you like and upload it to Wikimedia Commons. If it is copyrighted (eg a clip from a pop song), it must have a fair use rationale and be kept to 30 seconds or less, otherwise it will get deleted. Audio clips uploaded to Wikipedia should usually be in Ogg Vorbis format, although FLAC and WAV will work. See Help:Creation_and_usage_of_media_files#Audio for more detail.--♦IanMacM♦ (talk to me) 12:36, 12 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Name

edit

I have legally changed my name and would like to put new name and old name so both show Doublebara13 (talk) 15:15, 12 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Doublebara13. I guess that this is about Barbara Kalik, where you made a change, and Theroadislong reverted it because it was unsourced.
First, please understand that Wikipedia requires published sources for all information, especially about living people. We have no way of knowing whether you are Barbara Kalik, or a random vandal. We need a published source for the name change in order for the article to reflect it.
Secondly, assuming you are Barbara Kalik, please be aware of our policies on editing with a conflict of interest. You should not edit that article directly, but instead should make edit requests (see that link for details) on the article's talk page. ColinFine (talk) 15:31, 12 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Unpublished first article

  Courtesy link: Draft:Strange Pill

Hi there,

Please could you guide me? I wrote my first contribution over eight months ago, "Strange Pill", I'm not sure why it hasn't been published. Please could you tell me if there are any problems? Are there any changes that need to be made? I'm sure it's not perfect but I think these guys are doing amazing things and believe they should be listed. There are no articles about them in the New York Times but they have been working with organisations like the New York Philharmonic, exhibited in international festival and have recently been given an award by the New BBC Radiophonic Workshop which I would understand gives them relevance.

Looking forward to hearing back.

Many thanks and best regards, ~~~~ Thebluetree (talk) 15:16, 12 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

You have not submitted it for review, I have added the template to enable you to do this. Theroadislong (talk) 15:30, 12 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
But I predict that if you do submit it in its present form, it will not be accepted. Unfortunately, you have done what many many new Wikipedia editors do, and plunge into the very difficult task of creating a new article before you have acquired enough experience to understand what is required.
On a quick scan, most of your citations are to their performances, or to venues or events where they performed. Not one of these contributes to establishing that they meet Wikipedia's criteria for notability, and it ends up looking as if you're hoping that dozens of zeros added together will add up to something. I'm not meaning to disparage them - they may be doing wonderful work. But Wikipedia is not interested in what the subject of an article says or wants to say about themselves, or what their associates say about them. Wikipedia is only interested in what people who have no connection with the subject, and who have not been prompted or fed information on behalf of the subject, have chosen to publish about the subject in reliable sources. Wikipedia App Display Page Format

edit

How do I turn off the “Table of Contents” on the left side when I am reading an article? It takes up too much real estate.

I am a “user” of Wikipedia. I wish there was a positive way to have another word than “user”. “User” feels somewhat demeaning.

Arielspryte (talk) 20:12, 12 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I don't see a table of contents in the Android app, unless I pick "Contents" from the bottom right. What app are you using? Are you looking at the desktop version? ColinFine (talk) 20:15, 12 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I use the Apple IOS app ‘Wikipedia’

Thank you for your comments.
I found the

at the bottom left in Apple app. I had tapped that several times earlier and it did not seem to work. Must have been ‘something’ unknowable in computer land.
Thank for your quick and courteous response. Arielspryte (talk) 20:44, 12 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Arielspryte, if you'd prefer a different term, there's always "reader" (for non-editors) and "editor" (for, well, editors - which is a group you technically now belong to, courtesy of this help desk post!). 199.208.172.35 (talk) 21:00, 12 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

e-mail address changed on old account

edit

I created a Wikipedia account 10 years ago and made a few edits at that time. I forgot my password and requested a reset, but I didn't receive a password reset e-mail. I believe I changed my e-mail address shortly after creating this account. Is there anyway I can rejoin the community with my original user name? Virtual Dynamo 2605:A601:AE18:4F00:825:70D4:C3FB:C5E4 (talk) 22:26, 12 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hello. This would only be possible if you can regain access to the old email account. If not, you can create a new account with a similar username, and note the connection on your new userpage. You only made three edits ten years ago with the previous account. Cullen328 (talk) 22:54, 12 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
But but virtualdynamo is considered too similar to Virtual Dynamo. 2605:A601:AE18:4F00:D85A:D136:5706:6173 (talk) 15:03, 13 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I would advise to create a different account (for instance, "Virtual Dynamo 2" should be accepted by the software), edit a bit, and later you can ask at Wikipedia:Changing username/Usurpations to "usurp" the old name. (Not really an "usurpation" if you’re usurping yourself, but hey, that’s the process - we have no way to know that you are the real Virtual Dynamo.) If you ask now, someone will point you to the third note (we prefer only to grant requests from reasonably well-established users.). college programs as a partner.

edit

Good afternoon,

I am from Elite Royal International Career College and I am looking to establish a public college-private partnership with Sheridan College. ERICC is a private career college that has received its DLI number and is trying to expand its operations by delivering college programs as a partner. Could you direct us towards/send us the application to become a partner with Sheridan College?

Best regards, ERICC

This is not a general help desk, this is for asking questions related to Wikipedia. I would suggest that you contact that institution directly. 331dot (talk) 22:54, 12 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@331dot Should that phone number (I assume) be redacted? 71.228.112.175 (talk) 07:15, 13 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Courtesy link for those interested: Sheridan College. (Unless the querent meant Sheridan College (Wyoming), but this seems less likely.)
In passing, I see no explanation given in its article for the name of this college. Perhaps someone can find a Reliable source and add it? {The poster formerly known as 87.81.230.195} 90.193.131.160 (talk) 04:29, 13 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
