Are people's image copyrightable

For eg can I use Archie Hamilton picture in his wiki page. Theoverseer1 (talk) 03:28, 5 February 2024 (UTC)

All images (well, read most) are copyrighted. You can't just use any image you find. We require one of two things. Either the image is free (for the purposes of Wikipedia, it's been released as free under CC-BY-SA), or that we can prove fair use. Usually for alive people, fair use isn't really doable. @Theoverseer1:If you take a picture of Archie Hamilton with your own camera, then the copyright belongs to you and you can upload it and release it under a CC-BY-SA license. If the picture was taken by someone else, then the copyright belongs to them, not you, and you cannot magically declare that it is now licensed under a CC-BY-SA license. Dealing with a content dispute

Hi, I came across Land of the Lost (film) while patrolling recent changes. An IP removed the majority of the lead stating that "Critical response does not belong to the lead-in section". Though they've retained the critical response portion after I pointed out that there's no policy supporting removal, they still removed most of the first paragraph of the lead to say that it's "aimed at adult lowbrow viewers" (a bold claim to make, and not supported by the source they used) which I also believe doesn't properly summarize the article. I've already reverted three times, and this is my first content dispute, so I was wondering how I should go forward from now. Thanks, ayakanaa ( t · c ) 05:40, 5 February 2024 (UTC)

If it's an IP and they're not regularly editing from the same address, I'd go to WP:RFPP. If it is regularly the same address, WP:3RN might be the best venue. FWIW I saw an unexplained deletion from that article as well and did warn the IP who'd made that edit at their Talk page. If you aren't leaving messages at their Talk page, you need to do so. EXPANSION of articles

I would like to start expanding some articles (new text), but I don't have a very good knowledge of English to write almost perfectly, what do you advise me to do? I take this opportunity to point out that there is an error in the "further reading" paragraph of the salumeria page, could someone correct it? (I didn't create it). JackkBrown, there are errors in a large percentage of the paragraphs of a large percentage of en:Wikipedia's articles. What you might do is look for an article that seems to be well written but that is under-referenced, attempt to find sources for what it says, and, if you find sources, then add references to those sources. -- Hoary (talk) 12:49, 5 February 2024 (UTC)

Lord Taylor of Warwick information

To whom this may concern, I work for Lord Taylor of Warwick and he has requested that information of his age, birthplace and family (children and parents) are removed from the internet. Most common form of finding information is from Wikipedia. I believe in the past his wife, Lady Taylor has removed this unwanted information in the past but it resurfaced. I have tried removing the information myself today but it has reappeared straight away. Any help you can give with this issue would be much appreciated. First, you will need to declare as a paid editor, see WP:PAID. This is a Terms of Use requirement.

I think it's going to be difficult to keep that information out of the article as it forms part of the reason for his notability(one of the youngest members of the House of Lords), but you should make a formal edit request(click for instructions) on Talk:John Taylor, Baron Taylor of Warwick. 331dot (talk) 10:54, 5 February 2024 (UTC)

Thank you for your advice, I am not getting any financial gain from this request. I am not wanting to remove the information about him being the youngest member of the House of Lords, we are just hoping to remove his birth date and current age. That should not affect his. notability. Further, his Birth place is an unnessecary peace of information. "I work for Lord Taylor of Warwick" - so you most certainly are getting financial gain to make this request. This is not "his page", this is an entry in a global encyclopedia about a public figure. Going by our policy at WP:BLPPRIVACY, I am going to remove the full date of birth and list the year only. The age is automatically calculated and it is in the public interest to have his year of birth and age.

As for family - going by our policy at WP:BLPNAME I see no reason to remove the fact that he has children nor that he has an ex-wife. His current wife is discussed in depth on Taylor's personal webpage so I see no reason to remove the name. Qcne (talk) 11:37, 5 February 2024 (UTC)

Correct the spelling of a name

Hi,

I work for Philadelphia Ballet. I am trying to edit the name of our artistic director, Angel Corella. Currently his page lists his name as Ángel Corella, but his name does not have an accent in it. How do I change this?

Hello. First, as you will have noticed from your user talk page, you must change your user name, as names which imply shared use, or use on behalf of an organisation, are not allowed. You must either change your user name, or abandon the account and create a new, personal account. (You do not have to use your real name - I do, but many users do not) - and it may have your affiliation eg "John at PB", but it must be personal to you.

Second, you must read the restrictions on paid editing and make the mandatory public declaration of that status.

Third, you should not directly edit articles about Philadelphia Ballet or people associated with it, but should make edit requests relating to them.

I see that the very first reference cited in Philadelphia Ballet (which is in Spanish) does use the form "Ángel" for his name, but I see that those in English that I have looked at do not, so I have raised a move request to get the article's title changed. stub template locations

Legal changes

I have been tidying up the entry for an individual, and removing some of the incorrect (and some libellous) comments there, yet I am being barred from doing so by someone who says the changes are not constructive!. Please advise Trovatore1 (talk) 17:38, 5 February 2024 (UTC)

You removed two passages of text cited to Reliable sources (the BBC, no less), and from my cursory look, both passages summarised their source accurately. If those Reliable sources are incorrect, you need either to convince their publisher to retract them, or to find equally reliable published sources that contradict them, in which case Wikipedia can present both and allow the readers to compare them.

"Tidying up" sounds constructive, but your edits could also be construed as "whitewashing", which is not. You should follow Wikipedia's standard procedure of WP:Bold, revert, discuss, discuss the matter with the reverter AntiDionysius (on the article's Talk page, yours, or theirs), and come to a mutually acceptable consensus.

May we ask what, if anything, is your connection to the subject David Burgess-Joyce? Help from better editors with picture placement.

I need some help formatting and placing pictures on a page. I am new and tried for ages but could not. Are any experienced editors willing to help?

@Wiki 1756: Let me start by saying that nobody is superior than anyone on Wikipedia. I don't use the Visual Editor that much, so this just applies to the Source Editor. Take a copy of the picture name (!Note: Every image begins with File: or Image:), then place two square brackets [[]] on either side of the image name. Put a vertical line | near the image name's end but before the second pair (closing pair) of square brackets, then write "thumb". Then, position that line again and write a caption. [[File:The statue of Liberty.jpg|thumb|View of the [[statue of Liberty]] in New York, US]] is how your image should appear. 20 upper (talk) 18:18, 5 February 2024 (UTC)

Diet water

In the late 80s and early 90s diet water was an advertisement to stay fit but was taken down after the FDA took it down because it had chemicals like nickel and radon in it and was causing cancer. if you want me to write a full page about diet water shoot me an email. Hello, Dietwater7. If you want to write an article about diet water and you can find the reliable, independent sources required to establish that it meets Wikipedia's criteria for notability, then you are welcome to do so. Bear in mind that such an article must be based on independent published sources: neither your personal knowledge, nor material written or published by people involved with the product, is relevant to writing an article.

Note also that if you have a connection with the product (as suggested by your username) - then you have a conflict of interest, and would be well-advised to declare that publicly and familiarize yourself with the pitfalls of writing with a COI.

Finally, note that writing a Wikipedia article is extremely challenging for an inexperienced Wikipedia editor, and people who try it before they have spent significant time learning how Wikipedia works commonly have a frustrating and disappointing time.

My advice, as usual to new editors, is to put aside that idea entirely for several months, and spend your time improving some of our six million existing articles and learning about Wikipedia, espeically about verifiability, reliable sources, neutral point of view and notability. Then read your first article and, if you want to pick your idea up again, start by looking for the sources. ColinFine (talk) 22:07, 5 February 2024 (UTC)

I notice that your only previous edit has been reverted, as you added a name without a reference to support it, and replace one word with a synonym which (in my opinion) read less well. There is nothing shameful about having your edit reverted, that's how Wikipedia works. But it does suggest that you are not yet equipped to try writing an article. Article differences between revisions no longer show the actual article.

So I've noticed that differences between revisions of articles, the actual article with the changes no longer shows.

Now I see the DIFFONLY parameter at the end, which is likely the culprit. So I tried a completely different page to rule out that it is a fluke.

It appears not to be a fluke.

Deleting the diffonly=1 and reloading the page has no effect, it just reinserts itself.

How can I revert the Diffonly change?

José Delbo dead

The Facebook page of comics artist José Delbo contains numerous posts from his colleagues that he has died today. But his Wikipedia page shows him as alive and a Google search for "José Delbo dead" did not produce any results about his death. If Facebook cannot be used as a reliable source, do we have to wait for some sort of official press release until we can update the article about him to show that he is dead?
